Abstract:For plasmas in an extremely high-density state, like stellar cores or compressed fuel in inertial fusion facilities, their behavior turns out to be quite different when compared with those plasmas in interstellar space or magnetic confinement devices. To figure out those differences and uncover the kinetic physics in electrostatic excitations, a quantum kinetic code solving Wigner-Poisson equations has been developed. Basic plasmon decay, Landau damping, and two-stream instability of extremely high-density plasmas are investigated by using our newly developed code. Numerical simulations show that in the linear region, the dispersion relations of intrinsic modes can be significantly affected by quantum effects, and such simulation results can be well described by the existing analytical theory. Especially in the nonlinear region, since the space-time scale of collective modes of plasmas is comparable to the electron de Broglie wavelength, their couplings produce some new physics: the energy exchange between the electron and the collective mode results in an abnormal oscillation that does not exist in classical plasmas.

Abstract:The exchange-correlation of electrons, as a fundamental effect in quantum mechanics, plays an important role in the collective motions of electrons in warm dense matter. We derive the quantum kinetic equations based on the time-dependent Kohn-Sham equation. By using a temperature-dependent functional for the exchange correlation, the excitations of electrostatic waves are analyzed under the adiabatic local density approximation (ALDA). We find that the influences of the exchange-correlation effect on the group velocity of electrostatic waves can be as high as 10% when both the density and temperature are low. Moreover, we also compare the results obtained by using ALDA-based kinetic theory, exchange kinetic theory, and quantum hydrodynamics, and discuss the differences among them.

Abstract:Unexpected two-quantum resonances are observed in potassium vapor using two-dimensional Fourier-transform spectroscopy. These transitions are an unambiguous indication of many-body interactions, which arise from the long-range interatomic coupling that is responsible for resonance self-broadening.

Abstract:We explore experimentally quantum non-demolition (QND) measurements of atomic spin in a hot potassium vapor in the presence of spin-exchange relaxation. We demonstrate a new technique for back-action evasion by stroboscopic modulation of the probe light. With this technique we study spin noise as a function of polarization for atoms with spin greater than 1/2 and obtain good agreement with a simple theoretical model. We point that in a system with fast spin-exchange, where the spin relaxation rate is changing with time, it is possible to improve the long-term sensitivity of atomic magnetometry by using QND measurements.

Abstract:Optical two-dimensional Fourier-transformed (2DFT) spectroscopy is used to study the coherent optical response of potassium vapor in a thin transmission cell. Rephasing and non-rephasing spectra of the D1 and D2 transitions are obtained and compared to numerical simulations. Calculations using the optical Bloch equations gives very good agreement with the experimental peak strengths and line shapes. Non-radiative Raman-like coherences are isolated using a different 2DFT projection. Density-dependent measurements show distortion of 2DFT spectra due to pulse propagation effects.

Abstract:We explore the dynamics of N coupled atomic two-level systems embedded within a generic bosonic reservoir under specific system symmetries. In the regime of many atoms identically coupled to a single reservoir, we identify remarkable effects, notably that the initial configuration of the atomic excited-state amplitudes strongly impacts the dynamics of the system and can even fully sever the system from its environment. Additionally, we find that steady-state amplitudes of the excited states become independent of the specific structure of the bosonic reservoirs considered. The framework introduced is deployed to model a structured photonic reservoir associated with a photonic crystal, where it recaptures previous theoretical and experimental results for the superradiance rates even within the single-excitation regime. For the photonic band-gap system, our formalism predicts the generation of pairwise entanglement between initially uncorrelated atomic systems. Furthermore, it suggests that—with respect to a non-Markovian metric—the non-Markovianity of the aggregated many-atom system is modulated by the total number of atoms. Doppler-assisted quantum resonances through swappable excitation pathways in Potassium vapor

Abstract:We report the observation of two additional sub-natural line width quantum interference in the $D_2$ manifold of $^{39}K$ vapor, in addition to the usual single Electromagnetically induced transparency peak. The other two features appear exclusively because $^{39}K$ ground hyperfine splitting is smaller than the Doppler broadened absorption profile. This allows probe and control beams to swap their transition pathways. The control beam detuning captures the nature of the coherence, therefore an unusual phenomenon of conversion from perfect transparency to enhanced absorption is observed and explained by utilizing adiabatic elimination of the excited state in the Master equation. Controlling such dark and bright resonances leads to new applications in quantum technologies viz. frequency offset laser stabilization and long-lived quantum memory.

Abstract:We report the observation of double-quantum coherence signals in a gas of potassium atoms at twice the frequency of the one-quantum coherences. Since a single atom does not have a state at the corresponding energy, this observation must be attributed to a collective resonance involving multiple atoms. These resonances are induced by weak interatomic dipole-dipole interactions, which means that the atoms cannot be treated in isolation, even at a low density of 10(12) cm(-3).

Abstract:We report the observation of two additional sub-natural line width quantum interferences in the manifold of vapor, in addition to the usual single Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) peak. In a typical three level -type system, only one EIT peak is observed. However, here we report observation of two additional line shapes riding on top of the absorption profile. The fact that the hyperfine splitting is smaller than the Doppler width in allows the probe and control beams to swap their transition pathways in different velocity groups of atoms even when their frequencies are kept constant. Our observations are in striking contrast to standard EIT measurements. These findings are in quantitative agreement with density matrix formalism taking into account velocity-selective two-photon resonances. Owing to the favorably low ground hyperfine splitting ( ) in , which allows a significantly large number of atoms with a Doppler shift greater than or equal to the , the strength of these additional resonances is strong compared to that of other alkali atoms such as , where these resonances can not be observed. The control photon detuning to atomic transition captures the nature of the coherence; therefore an unusual phenomenon of conversion from perfect transparency to enhanced absorption of the probe photon is observed and explained by utilizing the adiabatic elimination of the excited state in the Master equation. Controlling such dark and bright resonances leads to new applications in quantum technologies such as frequency-offset laser stabilization and long-lived quantum memory.

Modulation Transfer Spectroscopy of the D1 Transition of Potassium: Theory and Experiment

Abstract:We report on a study of modulation transfer spectroscopy of the $4\textrm{S}_{1/2}\rightarrow 4\textrm{P}_{1/2}$ ($D_{1}$) transition of naturally abundant potassium in a room-temperature vapour cell. This transition is critical for laser cooling and optical pumping of potassium and our study is therefore motivated by the need for robust laser frequency stabilisation. Despite the absence of a closed transition, the small ground-state hyperfine splitting in potassium results in strong crossover features in the $D_{1}$ modulation transfer spectrum. To emphasise this we compare the $D_{1}$ and $D_{2}$ spectra of potassium with those of rubidium. Further, we compare our experimental results with a detailed theoretical simulation, examining different pump-probe polarization configurations to identify the optimal signals for laser frequency stabilisation. We find good agreement between the experiment and the theory, especially for the $\textrm{lin} \parallel \textrm{lin}$ polarization configuration.

Abstract:We theoretically describe the phenomenon of non-adiabatic spin dynamics, which occurs in a gas cell filled by alkali vapor in the presence of a strong alternating magnetic field and pump light. Steep increase of the spin polarization occurs if the frequency of the magnetic field is equal to the certain value. The observable effect relies on the periodic field that consists of two perpendicular components defined by harmonics with the same amplitudes and different frequencies. The considered effect of the coherent spin motion cannot be explained by a resonance, because the Larmor precession is absent without a constant component of magnetic field. Moreover, there are some clearly visible peaks in the excitation spectrum of spin polarization, which are narrow in comparison to the relaxation rate. Detailed analysis according to proposed quantum model results in the reasoning of the effect via qualitative properties of non-adiabatic dynamics of atomic spin.

Abstract:One of the paradigms of a small quantum system in a dissipative environment is the decay of an excited atom undergoing spontaneous photon emission into the fluctuating quantum electrodynamic vacuum. Recent experiments have demonstrated that the gapped photon dispersion in periodic structures can give rise to novel spontaneous-decay behavior including the formation of dissipative bound states. So far, these effects have been restricted to the optical domain. Here, we experimentally demonstrate similar behavior in a system of artificial atoms in an optical lattice that decay by emitting matter-wave, rather than optical, radiation into free space. By controlling the vacuum coupling and excitation energy, we directly observe exponential and partly reversible, non-Markovian dynamics and detect a tunable bound state containing evanescent matter waves for emission at negative excitation energies. Our system provides a flexible platform for the emulation of open-system quantum electrodynamics and studies of dissipative many-body physics with ultracold atoms.

Abstract:The classical dynamics of a diatomic molecule modeled by a Morse oscillator interacting with a chirped infrared laser pulse is studied. When the chirping rate is small, the system can be described approximately in the moving frame by a time-independent Hamiltonian, which produces single-node separtrices (buckets) in phase space. Systems trapped in the buckets undergo convection to dissociation. This route to dissociation is different from the chaotic diffusion route for monochromatic excitation and requires a much lower threshold laser intensity to achieve dissociation.

Abstract:We report on the stochastic dynamics of a few sodium atoms immersed in a cold potassium cloud. The studies are realized in a dual-species magneto-optical trap by continuously monitoring the emitted fluorescence of the two atomic species. We investigate the time evolution of sodium and potassium atoms in a unified statistical language and study the detection limits. We resolve the sodium atom dynamics accurately, which provides a fit free analysis. This work paves the path towards precise statistical studies of the dynamical properties of few atoms immersed in complex quantum environments.

Abstract:According to the conventional approach neural ensembles are modeled with fixed ionic concentrations in the extracellular environment. However, in some cases the extracellular concentration of potassium ions cannot be regarded as constant. Such cases represent specific chemical pathway for neurons to interact and can influence strongly the behavior of single neurons and of large ensembles. The released chemical agent diffuses in the external medium and lowers thresholds of individual excitable units. We address this problem by studying simplified excitable units given by a modified FitzHugh-Nagumo dynamics. In our model the neurons interact only chemically via the released and diffusing potassium in the surrounding nonactive medium and are permanently affected by noise. First, we study the dynamics of a single excitable unit embedded in the extracellular matter. That leads to a number of noise-induced effects such as self-modulation of firing rate in an individual neuron. After the consideration of two coupled neurons we consider the spatially extended situation. By holding parameters of the neuron fixed, various patterns appear ranging from spirals and traveling waves to oscillons and inverted structures depending on the parameters of the medium.

Abstract:Photoexcitation by ultrashort laser pulses plays a crucial role in controlling reaction pathways, creating nonequilibrium material properties, and offering a microscopic view of complex dynamics at the molecular level. The photo response following a laser pulse is, in general, non-identical between multiple exposures due to spatiotemporal fluctuations in a material or the stochastic nature of dynamical pathways. However, most ultrafast experiments using a stroboscopic pump-probe scheme struggle to distinguish intrinsic sample fluctuations from extrinsic apparatus noise, often missing seemingly random deviations from the averaged shot-to-shot response. Leveraging the stability and high photon-flux of time-resolved X-ray micro-diffraction at a synchrotron, we developed a method to quantitatively characterize the shot-to-shot variation of the photoinduced dynamics in a solid-state electrolyte. By analyzing temporal evolutions of the lattice parameter of a single grain in a powder ensemble, we found that the sample responses after different shots contain random fluctuations that are, however, not independent. Instead, there is a correlation between the nonequilibrium lattice trajectories following adjacent laser shots with a characteristic "correlation length" of approximately 1,500 shots, which represents an energy barrier of 0.38~eV for switching the photoinduced pathway, a value interestingly commensurate with the activation energy of lithium ion diffusion. Not only does our nonequilibrium noise correlation spectroscopy provide a new strategy for studying fluctuations that are central to phase transitions in both condensed matter and molecular systems, it also paves the way for discovering hidden correlations and novel metastable states buried in oft-presumed random, uncorrelated fluctuating dynamics.

Non-Markovian Dynamics of Open Quantum Systems via Auxiliary Particles with Exact Operator Constraint

Abstract:We introduce an auxiliary-particle field theory to treat the non-Markovian dynamics of driven-dissipative quantum systems of the Jaynes-Cummings type. It assigns an individual quantum field to each reservoir state and provides an analytic, faithful representation of the coupled system-bath dynamics. We apply the method to a driven-dissipative photon Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) coupled to a reservoir of dye molecules with electronic and vibronic excitations. The complete phase diagram of this system exhibits a hidden, non-Hermitian phase transition separating temporally oscillating from biexponentially decaying photon density correlations within the BEC. On one hand, this provides a qualitative distinction of the thermal photon BEC from a laser. On the other hand, it shows that one may continuously tune from the BEC to the lasing phase by circumventing a critical point. This auxiliary-particle method is generally applicable to the dynamics of open, non-Markovian quantum systems.

Abstract:Strong field ionization injects a transient vacancy in the atom which is entangled to the outgoing photoelectron. When the electron is finally detached, the ion is populated at different excited states with part of coherence information lost. The preserved coherence of matter after interacting with intense short pulses has important consequences on the subsequent nonequilibrium evolution and energy relaxation. Here we employ attosecond transient absorption spectroscopy to measure the time-delay of resonant transitions of krypton vacancy during their creation. We have observed that the absorptions by the two spin-orbit split states are modulated at different paces when varying the time-delay between the near-infrared pumping pulse and the attosecond probing pulse. It is shown that the coupling of the ions with the remaining field leads to a suppression of ionic coherence. Comparison between theory and experiments uncovers that coherent Raman coupling induces time-delay between the resonant absorptions, which provides insight into laser-ion interactions enriching attosecond chronoscopy.
