Abstract:In this paper, we discuss the multicast efficiency issue in the optical layer multicast. A 1-to-8 phase-preserved different phase-shifted keying (DPSK) wavelength multicast is experimentally demonstrated using four-wave mixing (FWM) in a piece of Bismuth highly nonlinear fiber (Bi-HNLF). DPSK signal is successfully delivered from one wavelength to up to eight different wavelengths using only three pumps. Compared with the existing schemes, the multicast efficiency is greatly improved by delivering the phase information to more destination wavelengths. (C) 2008 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We theoretically present and experimentally demonstrate all-optical wavelength multicasting based on cascaded four-wave mixing (FWM) in highly nonlinear fibers only using a single pump. The cascaded FWM effect is analyzed based on the sum amplitude method, which overcomes the limitation of the number of analyzed idlers, and the performance of the wavelength multicasting is evaluated. By using a continuous wave pump and a pulse train as the signal, multiple-order idlers are experimentally generated and the patterns of 6 multicasting channels are measured. Regardless of the dynamic region of the tunable filter, this method has the potential to realize more multicasting channels, especially when higher pump and signal powers are used.

Abstract:All-optical wavelength multicasting has been experimentally demonstrated for 36 Gbit/s 16-quadrature amplitude modulation signals based on four-wave mixing processes in a silicon waveguide with multiple pumps. In our experiment, dual pumps are injected together with the signal into the waveguide and nine idlers are generated, involving five wavelength multicasting channels. Coherent detection and advanced digital signal processing are employed, and the recovered constellation diagrams of the multicasting idlers show a root-mean-square error vector magnitude degradation as small as 2.74%. The bit error rate (BER) results are measured for these multicasting idlers, and the power penalties are all lower than 0.96 dB at the BER of 3.8 x 10(-3) (corresponding to the forward error correction threshold). Abstract:Multicasting is an important function of wavelength-routing optical communication networks. An all-optical multicasting is presented and experimentally demonstrated based on four-wave mixing (FWM) in highly nonlinear fibers. An input signal with data information together with a pump are injected into a highly nonlinear fiber and two idlers with new frequencies can be generated through two degenerate FWM processes, which carry the same data information as the input signal. The single input signal is copied to two channels and the pump can also be modulated by this data. The advantage of this scheme consists in the simple configuration, where only a single pump is needed and no other injected lights are required, the uniform powers and tunable wavelengths of the multicasting signals, and the capacity to further increase multicasting channel number.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate multichannel wavelength multicasting for two nonreturn-to-zero quadrature phase-shift keying(NRZ-QPSK) channels based on four-wave mixing(FWM) in semiconductor optical amplifier(SOA). Through the interaction with the two pumps in SOA, the input two 25 Gb/s NRZ-QPSK channels are successfully simultaneously multicast to five and two new wavelengths, respectively. All the multicast channels are with a power penalty less than 2.5 d B at a bit error rate(BER) of 10-3. A characterization of the system performance using conversion efficiency and BER as figures-of-merit in terms of pump and signal powers is also presented. The results indicate that the pump and signal powers can be optimized to eliminate the introduced deleterious nonlinear components. The wavelengths of the two NRZ-QPSK channels and the two pumps need to be specified to avoid the crosstalk induced by high-order FWM.

The eye diagrams and constellation diagrams of the converted and multicasting idlers are successfully observed. Moreover, the bit-error rates (BERs) of the generated idlers are measured and the power penalties are all less than 0.7 dB at a BER of 3×10(-3).

Abstract:We propose a dual-stage multi-pump FWM scheme for all-optical signal multicasting in HNLF. Based on the scheme, we experimentally demonstrate 25GHz-spaced l-to-49 multicasting of PDM OFDM signal using 6 pumps. All replicas exhibit performance above 7% FEC threshold with Q-factor margin of no less than 1dB. To the best our knowledge, this is the largest reported replica count in the context of all-optical multicasting of PDM OFDM signals.

Abstract:We propose a scheme for mitigating Rayleigh backscattering noise and demodulating differential phaseshift keying (DPSK) signals in wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical networks (WDM-PONs) with injection-locked Fabry-Perot laser diodes (FP-LDs).Signal demodulation and wavelength conversion are simultaneously realized on the basis of the frequency deviation and red shift of longitude modes in the FP-LDs.Experimental results demonstrate that the demodulation and wavelength conversion of 2.5-Gb/s DPSK signals are achieved.A power penalty of about 1.6 dB at a bit error rate of 10 -9 is measured after transmission over 25-km single mode fiber.

Abstract:In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate simultaneous multichannel wavelength multicasting (MWM) and exclusive-OR logic gate multicasting (XOR-LGM) for three 10Gbps non-return-to-zero differential phase-shift-keying (NRZ-DPSK) signals in quantum-dot semiconductor optical amplifier (QD-SOA) by exploiting the four-wave mixing (FWM) process. No additional pump is needed in the scheme. Through the interaction of the input three 10Gbps DPSK signal lights in QD-SOA, each channel is successfully multicasted to three wavelengths (1-to-3 for each), totally 3-to-9 MWM, and at the same time, three-output XOR-LGM is obtained at three different wavelengths. All the new generated channels are with a power penalty less than 1.2dB at a BER of 10(-9). Degenerate and non-degenerate FWM components are fully used in the experiment for data and logic multicasting.

Abstract:Due to its relative low baud rate as well as simple and cost-efficient implementation, dual-carrier polarization-division-multiplexing 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (PDM-16QAM) is a promising candidate for the next generation optical systems and networks at 400Gb/s per channel. The co-polarized dual-pump scheme, based on four-wave mixing (FWM) in a 1-km high nonlinear fiber (HNLF), can realize the all-optical wavelength conversion (AOWC) of the dual-carrier PDM-16QAM signal with spectral non-inversion and polarization insensitivity. We first experimentally demonstrated AOWC of the 544-Gbit/s dual-carrier PDM-16QAM signal based on the co-polarized dual-pump scheme. We investigated the conversion efficiency (CE) and optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) of the converted signal at different pump spacing and pump power. We measured that the OSNR penalty is 0.6 dB due to AOWC when the bit-error ratio (BER) and pump spacing is 2 x 10(-2) and 200 GHz, respectively. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We demonstrate a four-wave-mixing-based wavelength converter suitable for coherent optical transmission at 100 Gb/s/lambda and beyond that uses phase-diversity and nonconstant amplitude modulation formats. Our setup consists of 2 m of bismuth oxide-based nonlinear fiber and two copolarized external cavity pump lasers. We demonstrate wavelength conversion of 112-Gb/s polarization-multiplexed return-to-zero quadrature phase-shift keying and 144-Gb/s 16-ary quadrature-amplitude modulation signals. Less than 0.4-dB optical signal-to-noise ratio penalty at BER = 2 x 10(-3) due to wavelength conversion was measured.

Abstract:We propose an all-optical phase-interleaving technology based on dual-pump four-wave mixing (FWM) in highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF). The proposed all-optical phase-interleaving technology is applied in an all-optical phase-multiplexing scheme to successfully phase-multiplex 2times or 3 times 10-Gb/s DPSK-WDM signals to a 20- or 30-Gb/s DPSK in non-return-to-zero (NRZ) formats. The proposed all-optical phase multiplexing scheme is demonstrated using dual-pump FWM in highly nonlinear silica and bismuth fibers. In contrast with optical time-division multiplexing technology, the proposed all-optical phase-multiplexing technology does not require pulse-carving, thus offering a high spectral-efficiency. Differential precoder for each input tributary is operated independently, and no additional encoder or postcoder is required to recover the original data after demodulation on the receiver side.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate an all-optical phase multiplexing scheme using four-wave mixing in a highly nonlinear fiber. Two 10-Gb/s pi/2-shifted return-to-zero (RZ) differential phase-shift-keying (DPSK) wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) signals are successfully phase-multiplexed into a 20-Gb/s RZ differential quadrature phase-shift-keying signal with a negative 1.6-dB power penalty. With more input DPSK WDM signals, the proposed scheme can be applied to obtain a multilevel phase-shift-keying signal with increased capacity and enhanced spectral efficiency.

Abstract:Optical multicasting that supports point-to-multipoint traffic replication can be one of the necessary techniques in next-generation all-optical elastic networks. In this paper, we propose an optical multicasting approach for polarization-division-multiplexing (PDM) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals based on a novel polarization-interleaved multi-pump (PIMP) four-wave mixing (FWM) scheme in highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF). Besides format transparency and the support of PDM signals, the scheme further enables wide spectral tunability of generated replicas. The pump frequency arrangement for the scheme is presented, which successfully prevents the replicas from being superimposed by unwanted FWM components during tuning. We experimentally demonstrate multicasting operation of a 3-band 100-Gb/s PDM-OFDM signal. With different input positions, 1.4 and 1.6 Terahertz tuning ranges of four replicas are achieved with Q-factor performance better than the forward error correction threshold. Tunable replica spacing from 100-GHz to 250-GHz are also verified. In addition, the scalability of the scheme is demonstrated via 5-pump multicasting, successfully generating a total of 14 replicas.
