Abstract:This paper reviews distributed discrimination of strain and temperature by use of an optical fiber based on fiber optic nerve systems. The preliminary method based on multiple resonance peaks of the Brillouin gain spectrum in a specially-designed fiber is firstly introduced. The complete discrimination of strain and temperature based on the Brillouin dynamic grating in a polarization maintaining fiber is extensively presented. The basic principle and two experimental schemes of distributed discrimination based on fiber optic nerve systems are demonstrated. The performance of the high discriminative accuracy (0.1 °C–0.3°C and 5 μɛ–12μɛ) and high spatial resolution (∼10 cm) with the effective measurement points of about 50 for a standard system configuration or about 1000 for a modified one will be highly expected in real industry applications.

Abstract:Temperature–strain cross-sensitivity and bending-induced optical loss are two major limitations that challenge the in-situ application of distributed optical fiber sensors. Researchers have attempted to solve these two issues but seldom can overcome both. This paper proposes a novel bending-loss-resistant distributed temperature and strain discriminative sensor that is based on a 98 mol% germania-doped few-mode fiber and a standard Brillouin optical time-domain analysis setup. In a proof-of-concept demonstration, distributed temperature and strain discriminative measurements were conducted under a bending radius of 0.6 cm, where the maximum temperature and strain deviation were 2.78 ℃ and 33.2 μϵ , respectively.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel method to discriminate strain and temperature by simultaneous measurements of birefringence and Brillouin frequency shift in a PANDA-type polarization-maintaining fiber. A high-accuracy discrimination of 3-4 mu epsilon and 0.02 similar to 0.03 degrees C is realized.

Abstract:A new single-mode optical fiber with two Brillouin gain peaks is designed and fabricated to increase the differences in the temperature and strain coefficients between the peaks. The gains of the two Brillouin peaks are at a similar level and the temperature coefficient difference is ~0.2 MHz/°C. The fiber is well suited for simultaneous temperature and strain measurement with reduced uncertainties in Brillouin distributed fiber sensing applications.

Abstract:We have experimentally investigated spatial-division multiplexed (SDM) Brillouin optical time-domain analysis in a heterogeneous multicore fiber whose central core and six outer cores are made from different preforms, showing a similar to 70 MHz Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) difference between them. It reveals that the heterogeneous central core and the outer cores have different temperature sensitivities, but their strain sensitivities are almost the same. By making use of the distinct temperature coefficients of these two kinds of cores, simultaneous and discriminative temperature and strain measurements are achieved. The bending-induced Brillouin gain spectrum (BGS) broadening issue in off-center cores has been clarified, and a solution has been proposed to eliminate the uncertainty caused by a bending-induced BFS shift, by averaging the BFS variations of two symmetrical outer cores. We show a new perspective for discriminative measurement in Brillouin distributed sensors based on SDM solutions. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

Abstract:A numerical analysis of a GeO2-doped single-mode optical fiber with a multi-step index core toward stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) based dual-parameter sensing applications is proposed. Adjusting the parameters in the fiber design, higher-order acoustic modes are sufficiently enhanced, making the fiber feasible for discriminative measurements of temperature and strain in the meantime. Numerical simulations indicate that the Brillouin frequency shifts and peak SBS efficiencies are strongly dependent on the doping concentration and the thickness of low-index ring in the proposed fiber. With appropriate structural and optical parameters, this fiber could support two distinct acoustic modes with comparable peak SBS efficiencies and well-spaced Brillouin frequency shifts. The sensing characteristics contributed by the dual-peak feature in the Brillouin gain spectrum are explored. Calculated accuracies of temperature and strain in simultaneous measurements can be up to 0.64 °C and 15.4 με, respectively. The proposed fiber might have potential applications for long-haul distributed dual-parameter simultaneous measurements.

Abstract:Standard single mode fiber that normally used in Brillouin optical time domain analysis fiber sensors typically has only one Brillouin gain peak (BGP), and its central frequency [i.e., Brillouin frequency shift (BFS)] can he affected by both temperature and strain, which gives rise to temperature and strain cross sensitivity. In this paper, we propose a new method to realize temperature and strain discrimination, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, by using commercial single mode dispersion compensating fiber (DCF) that has two BGPs located around 9.536 and 10.052 GHz, respectively. The two peaks have different temperature coefficients but nearly the same strain coefficients, which permits simultaneous temperature and strain sensing by combing the BFSs obtained from the two BGPs. The biggest advantage of the DCF is that the frequency space between its two BGPs is >100 MHz wider than some other fibers, ensuring much wider temperature and strain sensing range. In a proof of concept experiment, temperature and strain are fully discriminated with a temperature resolution of similar to 2.6 degrees C and a strain resolution of similar to 64.6 mu epsilon at the end of a 1-km sensing fiber with 2-m spatial resolution.

Abstract:A simple fiber-optic sensor capable of discrimination between temperature and strain is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The sensor head is formed by cascading two sections of single-mode thin-core diameter fibers (TCFs) that act as two different inter-modal interferometers (IMIs). Due to the different sensitivity responses of the two IMIs to strain and temperature, it is possible to discriminate temperature and strain by monitoring the resonant wavelength shifts. The experimental results indicate that the measured strain and temperature resolutions are 37.41 mu epsilon and 0.732 degrees C within a strain range of 0-1333.3 mu epsilon and a temperature range from 26.9 degrees C to 61.7 degrees C. The sensing sensitivities of strain and temperature are -1.03 pm/mu epsilon and 30.74 pm/degrees C, respectively. The proposed sensor features the advantages of easy fabrication, low cost and high sensitivity, and it exhibits great potential in dual-parameter measurement. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America

Abstract:In this work, we present a discriminative optical fiber sensor for temperature and strain measurement. The sensor comprises of two cascaded thermal regenerated Fiber Bragg gratings (RFBGs) incorporated with two fused silica capillary tubes. The RFBG 2 is loosely enclosed in a fine fused silica tube and made solely sensitivity to temperature whereas the RFBG 1 sensor still retains its sensitivity to both strain and temperature. These properties have made the discriminative measurement accurate and directive. The experimental results indicate that temperature response is linear in the range of 100 – 1000°C with the sensitivity of ~15.7 pm/°C. Besides, it presents good repeatability in strain detection at high temperatures (300 °C – 900 °C). The incorporation of the two fine glass tubes has enhanced the modified RFBG’s strain sensitivity to as high as ~5.46 pm/ $\mu \varepsilon $ in the measurement range of $0~\mu \varepsilon $ to 120 $\mu \varepsilon $ at 600 °C, which is about five times higher than that of common RFBG strain sensors. The sensitivity can be further enhanced by manipulating the parameters of the sensor’s structure.

Abstract:A fiber optic sensor for simultaneous measurement of temperature and strain is demonstrated, based on a few-mode solid-core photonic crystal fiber. In the core of the few-mode fiber, the fundamental mode and the first higher order mode are co-excited, when coupling light from a collapsed end, through a single-mode fiber. Mach-Zehnder interferences between the two core modes and one possible cladding mode are observed. The interference characteristics vary accordingly, with the change of temperature and applied strain. This system gives a sensitivity of 9.85 pm/°C and 3.24 pm/με, respectively.

Abstract:We propose a fiber-optic sensor for simultaneous measurement of twist and temperature using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer by sandwiching a segment of seven-core fiber (SCF) between two sections of very short multimode fibers via fusion splicing technique. The cladding diameter and the pitch between adjacent cores of the SCF are measured to be 150 and 41.5 mu m, respectively, larger than those of conventional SCFs, which lead to a higher twist sensitivity. Within twist range from 4.758 to 40.439 radim and temperature range from 30 to 100 degrees C, this sensor shows a twist sensitivity of -400 pm/(raclim) and a temperature sensitivity of 123 pm/degrees C, respectively. The influence of strain is negligible since the strain sensitivity is much lower. The sensor configuration possesses other advantages such as ease of fabricate, high contrast, and low-cost, therefore it exhibits practical applications potentials in engineering machinery and building structural health monitoring. Abstract:Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in a high-delta fiber with F-doped depressed inner cladding is studied through considering the interaction of acoustic and optical modes in the fiber. It is found that the number of acoustic modes in the fiber is reduced and the frequency spacing between neighboring modes is enlarged because of the F doping. The dependences of SBS on strain and temperature are measured and compared for each acoustic mode to investigate the feasibility of discriminative sensing of strain and temperature by use of the fiber.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel scheme to generate and detect Brillouin dynamic grating in a polarization-maintaining optical fiber based on one laser source. Precise measurement of Brillouin dynamic grating spectrum is achieved benefiting from that the pump, probe and readout waves are coherently originated from the same laser source. Distributed discrimination of strain and temperature is also achieved with high accuracy.

Abstract:A variety of specialty fibers such as no-core fiber (NCF) have already been studied to reveal their sensing abilities. In this work, we investigate a specialty fiber, square-core fiber, for temperature and strain sensing. A simple single-mode–multimode–single-mode (SMS) fiber sensor was fabricated, consisting of a 30-cm-long square-core fiber. The experimental results indicate that the maximal wavelength-temperature and wavelength-strain sensitivities are −15.3 pm/∘C and −1.5 pm/με, respectively, while the maximal power-temperature and power-strain sensitivities are 0.0896 dBm/∘C and 0.0756 dBm/με. Analysis of the results suggests that the fiber sensor has the potential to be used as a high-sensitivity temperature sensor with a low strain sensitivity.

Abstract:A high-resolution strain/temperature sensing system based on a fiber Bragg grating-Fabry-Perot cavity (FBG-FPC) and a wavelength-swept single-longitudinal-mode laser diode (modulated by a sawtooth signal) is proposed. The high-finesse (~627) FBG-FPC formed by two uniform FBGs of high reflectivity (~99.5%) is used both as a strain/temperature sensor and a FPC with ultranarrow (~0.12 pm) transmission bands. Using a photodetector to detect the transmissive light of the laser diode through the FBG-FPC, wavelength demodulation is achieved by mapping wavelength measurement to time measurement. Both strain sensing and temperature sensing with a resolution of 0.11 muepsiv and 0.014degC, respectively, have been demonstrated.

Abstract:Distributed discrimination of strain and temperature is demonstrated by localizing both the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and the dynamic acoustic grating generated in the SBS process in a polarization-maintaining fiber with a correlation-domain continuous-wave technique. A 12- ¿¿ strain resolution and 0.3°C temperature resolution together with a 10-cm spatial resolution are experimentally validated.

Abstract:The dependences of Brillouin frequency shifts (BFSs) on strain and temperature in GeO 2 -doped optical fibers are investigated. Our study shows that the strain (temperature) coefficient of the BFS is linearly proportional to the decrease of the GeO 2 concentration in the fiber core with a relative rate of -1.48% (-1.61%) per unit mol percentage. The coefficients of 0 mol% GeO 2 -doped silica (i.e., pure silica) are extracted from the least squares fitted linear dependences of the coefficients on GeO 2 concentration; the results show good agreement with simulations taking into account the changes of the refractive index, the density, and the Young's modulus induced by the applied strain and the temperature change. Furthermore, when measurement upon three fibers drawn from the same preform, but under different draw tensions are done, this provides that there exists an optimized tension during fiber fabrication that maximizes the difference between strain and temperature coefficients.

Abstract:A distributed optical fiber sensor with the capability of simultaneously measuring temperature and strain is proposed using a large effective area non-zero dispersion shifted fiber (LEAF) with sub-meter spatial resolution. The Brillouin frequency shift is measured using Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) with differential pulse-width pair technique, while the spectrum shift of the Rayleigh backscatter is measured using optical frequency-domain reflectometry (OFDR). These shifts are the functions of both temperature and strain, and can be used as two independent parameters for the discrimination of temperature and strain. A 92 m measurable range with the spatial resolution of 50 cm is demonstrated experimentally, and accuracies of +/- 1.2 degrees C in temperature and +/- 15 mu epsilon in strain could be achieved.

Abstract:Based on the phenomenon of the frequency shift in Brillouin back-scattering light related to the strain of the optical fiber, a new strain sensing scheme was proposed. The linear relationship between the frequency shift of Brillouin back-scattering and the strain of the lower requirement for the bandwidth and line stability of the laser source was analyzed. The experimental setup and result were presented.
