Abstract:A description is given of a delta-sigma ( Delta - Sigma ) modulation and fractional-N frequency division technique for performing indirect digital frequency synthesis using a phase-locked loop (PLL). The use of Delta - Sigma modulation concepts results in beneficial shaping of the phase noise (jitter) introduced by fractional-N division. Abstract:This paper presents the design considerations and implementation of a novel topology digital multistage-noise-shaping (MASH) delta-sigma modulator suitable for fractional-N phase-locked-loop (PLL) frequency synthesis. In an effort to reduce the complexity and dissipation,a pipeline technique has been used, and the proposed carry save tree (CST) algorithm optimizes the multi-input adder structure. The circuit has been verified through Matlab simulation, ASIC implementation, and FPGA experiment, which exhibits high performance and potential for a gigahertz range,low-power monolithic CMOS frequency synthesizer.

Abstract:This paper investigates the design of digital Sigma-Delta Modulator (SDM) for fractional-N frequency synthesizer. Characteristics of SDMs are compared through theory analysis and simulation. The curve of maximum-loop-bandwidth vs. maximum-phase-noise is suggested to be a new criterion to the performance of SDM, which greatly helps designers to select an appropriate SDM structure to meet their real application requirements and to reduce the cost as low as possible. A low-spur 3-order Multistage Noise Shaping (MASH)-1-1-1 SDM using three 2-bit first-order cascaded modulators is proposed, which balances the requirements of tone-free and maximum operation frequency.

Abstract:Fractional-N frequency synthesis based on /spl Delta//spl Sigma/ modulators offers wide bandwidth with narrow channel spacing and alleviates PLL design constraints for phase noise and reference spur. However, the synthesizer phase noise performance is significantly affected by the high-frequency out-of-band noise, which is difficult to suppress with the finite number of PLL loop filter poles. This work uses a 3b 3rd-order modulator that generates less high-frequency noise and makes the system less sensitive to the phase detector nonlinearity.

Abstract:An ultrahigh frequency (UHF) band fractional-N frequency synthesizer with phase noise optimization technique was proposed and implemented,with an operating frequency of 0.8-1.6 GHz.The dead-zone elimination technique was adopted to reduce the noise influence induced by the phase frequency detector and charge pump on the system.The distributed varactor structure and second-order harmonic filtering technique were adopted in the voltage-controlled oscillator to achieve lower phase noise.The new type of notch filtering technique was adopted in the △-∑ modulator to further mitigate the inband phase noise and system spurs.The synthesizer was fabricated and verified in TSMC 180 nm CMOS process.The test results show that the proposed synthesizer achieves a maximum phase noise of-95,-127 and-146 dBc/Hz at 0.01,1 and 10 MHz offset,with the spurious suppression less than-81 dBc and the power dissipation of only 20 mW.The chip area is 2.5 mm×1.1 mm.

Abstract:A CMOS fractional-N synthesizer with 3rd-order modulator and programmable prescaler with division factor from 64 to 127 is presented.The device was implemented in 0.35 μm CMOS process.Simulation results show that the synthesizer has a maximum input frequency of 1.6 GHz.a phase noise up to-104.09 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset,and an FM deviation of 22 Hz,with 30 mW of power dissipation.

Abstract:This paper describes the design of a 4th-order leapfrog [1] delta-sigma DAC.This topology is less sensitive to coefficient variation.In order to implement the modulator in a most efficient way,here also gives a method of minimizing the word-length of delta-sigma modulator.Further coefficients of the modulator are quantized to power-of-two,so multiplication operations are simplified to bit-shift operations.At the same time the performance is not reduced.Signal to noise ratio(SNR) is the criterion for word-length reduction.

Abstract:This paper analyzes the design methodology of ΣΔ modulator(SDM) used in fractional-N frequency synthesizer for wireless communication,and an efficient and uncomplicated single loop 3rd order 3-bit SDM is proposed.The circuit has been implemented in standard 0.18 μm CMOS process.By using 24 bits bus,the frequency resolution of the SDM is 8 Hz when it operates at 16 MHz.A detailed analysis of it shows the flat out-of-band noise,narrow output bit pattern,and its performance are better than multistage ΣΔ modulator with the same order.

Abstract:A compact, low power and global-mismatch-tolerant 0.8-6 GHz fractional- N PLL is designed to cover IEEE 802.11abg, PCS/DCS and cellular bands. Two new techniques are proposed to cancel the in-band quantization noise and fractional spurs. Firstly, a second order binary-weighted digital/analog differentiator (DAD) is utilized to enable the second order mismatch shaping and reduce the quantization noise by 25 dB, along with advantages of compact circuit implementation with smaller routing area and less power consumption over those of dynamic element matching (DEM) based counterparts. Secondly, mechanisms causing fractional spurs are also identified and a third order offset-frequency delta-sigma (Δ-Σ) modulator is devised to decrease the in-band spurs by 20 dB in simulation and 8 dB in present single-ended circuit implementation.

Abstract:Oversampling modulators based on high-order sigma-delta modulation provide an effective means of achieving high resolution analog-to-digital conversion in a VLSI technology.This paper examines the design of a CMOS sigma-delta modulator for digital-audio A/D conversion that operates from a single 3V supply. A third-order cascaded architecture is introduced for its large full-scale input range and dynamic range.Time-domain behavioral simulation considering the mismatch effects in the cascaded architecture is explored based on MATLAB SIMULINK.The modulator is also validated by SPICE simulation,based on SMIC 0.18um process.By comparing the results from behavioral models and device models,we find a fast and accurate enough approach for the simulation of cascaded sigma-delta modulators.The experimental modulator achieves a dynamic range of 111dB at a Nyquist conversion rate of 44.1 kHz.
Practical Design Aspects in Fractional-N Frequency Synthesis

Abstract:The objective of this work is to present practical design consideration of fractional-N frequency synthesis focusing on different aspects from integer-N frequency synthesizer design. In this work, a DeltaSigma fractional-N frequency synthesis technique for high spectral purity is primarily considered. The DeltaSigma fractional-N synthesizer offers several advantages over integer-N synthesizers and conventional fractional-N synthesizers. However, superior performance of the DeltaSigma fractional-N synthesizer can be possibly limited by noise coupling, nonlinearity, and out-of-band phase noise performance. Design efforts and system perspectives both for the DeltaSigma modulator and the PLL are needed to overcome those issues. System and circuit design aspects in DeltaSigma fractional-N synthesizer design have been addressed followed by experimental hardware results.

Abstract:A new Sigma-delta modulator (SDM) for Radio frequency (RF) fractional-N frequency synthesizer is proposed with a new dither generating method and a dither feedback loop. In this structure, the output of the conventional Multi-stage noise shaping (MASH) structure is reshaped by low order filter to generate dither signal, and the dither signal is fed back into the MASH structure to smooth the output Power density spectrum (PDS). The new dither generating structure is simplified by reusing the self-generating signal of the eight-bit conventional MASH structure and the low order filter is easily realized with the three-bit first order accumulator. The validity of the elimination of idle tones for the proposed SDM is verified with full stable input range by both simulation and ASIC implementation. As the proposed 8-bit structure can generate tone free signal even better than the 14-bit MASH structure without feedback dither, it exhibits high potential for high frequency, low-power monolithic fractional-N frequency synthesizer.

Abstract:This paper gives an overview of fractional-N phase-locked loops (PLLs) with practical design perspectives focusing on a Delta Sigma modulation technique and a finite-impulse response (FIR) filtering method. Spur generation and nonlinearity issues in the Delta Sigma fractional-N PLLs are discussed with simulation and hardware results. High-order Delta Sigma modulation with FIR-embedded filtering is considered for low noise frequency generation. Also, various architectures of finite-modulo fractional-N PLLs are reviewed for alternative low cost design, and the FIR filtering technique is shown to be useful for spur reduction in the finite-modulo fractional-N PLL design.

Abstract:A 1.1-GHz fractional-N frequency synthesizer is implemented in 0.5-/spl mu/m CMOS employing a 3-b third-order /spl Delta//spl Sigma/ modulator. The in-band phase noise of -92 dBc/Hz at 10-kHz offset with a spur of less than -95 dBc is measured at 900.03 MHz with a phase detector frequency of 7.994 MHz and a loop bandwidth of 40 kHz. Having less than 1-Hz frequency resolution and agile switching speed, the proposed system meets the requirements of most RF applications including multislot GSM, AMPS, IS-95, and PDC.

Abstract:This paper presents a highly digital technique that can significantly reduce the quantization noise of fractional- N phase-locked loops (PLLs) at all frequencies. This is achieved by using an array of dividers to realize spatial averaging. A fractional $\Delta \Sigma$ modulator (DSM) and a data-weighted averaging (DWA) module are used to generate the vector division ratio for the divider array. Based on this technique, a 2.4-GHz fractional- N frequency synthesizer is implemented in 40 nm CMOS process, in which spatial averaging is achieved with only one divider and phase selection to lower the power. Measurement results show that the phase noise at 1 MHz and 10 MHz frequency offsets are improved by 8 dB and 20 dB, respectively, compared to the conventional architecture. The output root-mean-square (rms) jitter is reduced from 10.4 ps to 3.1 ps, same as that at integer mode. The proposed synthesizer consumes only 4.9 mW in total, leading to a FoM of -223.3 dB.

Abstract:This paper describes a quantization noise reduction method in Delta Sigma fractional-N synthesizer design based on a semidigital approach. By employing a phase shifting technique, a low power hybrid finite impulse response (FIR) filtering is realized which is suitable for RF applications. A prototype fractional-N synthesizer is implemented in 180nm CMOS for WCDMA/HSDPA applications. Experimental results show that the proposed method can effectively suppress out-of-band phase noise to meet the phase noise mask requirements in various RF applications.

Abstract:A wide range fractional-N frequency synthesizer in 0.18 μm RF CMOS technology is implemented. A switched-capacitors bank LC-tank VCO and an adaptive frequency calibration technique are used to expand the frequency range. A 16-bit third-order sigma—delta modulator with dither is used to randomize the fractional spur. The active area is 0.6 mm2. The experimental results show the proposed frequency synthesizer consumes 4.3 mA from a single 1.8 V supply voltage except for buffers. The frequency range is 1.44–2.11 GHz and the frequency resolution is less than 0.4 kHz. The phase noise is −94 dBc/Hz @ 100 kHz and −121 dBc/Hz @ 1 MHz at the output of the prescaler with a loop bandwidth of approximately 120 kHz. The performance meets the requirements for the multi-band and multi-mode transceiver applications.

Abstract:A wideband -sigma fractional-N frequency synthesiser with novel -sigma quantisation noise folding suppression technique is presented in this article. A novel linearisation technique is proposed to suppress -sigma quantisation noise folding due to nonlinearity of the phase frequency detector/charge pump (PFD/CP). In order to cover a wide frequency band and process, voltage and temperature (PVT) variation, a switched capacitors LC tank voltage-controlled oscillator and closed-loop automatic frequency band selection method are adopted. The chip is fabricated in a HeJian 0.18 radio frequency (RF) CMOS process. The measured output frequency is from 1.75 to 2.25GHz with tuning range as wide as 500MHz. The measured phase noise performance is -81.97dBc/Hz and -112dBc/Hz at 10-KHz and 1-MHz offset frequency, respectively. The measured reference spur is -44.05dBc/Hz at 10-MHz offset frequency. The frequency synthesiser consumes 27.8mW from a 1.8V power supply.

Abstract:A 1 GHz monolithic high spectrum purity fractional-N frequency synthesizer with a 3-b third-order modulator is implemented. A combined tuning technique of analog tuning and digital tuning is used to improve the phase noise of the frequency synthesizer. The power supply configuration is optimized to reduce the supply noise coupling, to improve the linearity of PFD and to increase the tuning range of the VCO. The on-chip VCO with a small gain utilizes the tail current source filtering technique to achieve a low phase noise, but it still keeps 100 MHz tuning range due to the introduction of the on-chip digital controlled switched capacitor array. The frequency synthesizer has been integrated on one chip in 0.18 μm CMOS process, the simulated results show the frequency synthesizer has a 14 kHz loop bandwidth and a high spectrum purity, the maximum in-band phase noise is -106 dBc/Hz, the phase noise is lower than -120 dBc/Hz at 100 kHz offset, and the frequency synthesizer has a fast settling time which is about 160 μS.
