Abstract:Temperature-tunable directional laser emission from a dye-doped liquid-crystal-based planar random cavity laser is presented. The optically pumped nematic liquid crystal infiltrated planar random microcavity produces an ultranarrow linewidth (0.03 nm, corresponding to Q > 20,000), highly directional (1.4 degrees divergence angle) laser emission. By increasing the temperature from 27 degrees C to 34 degrees C, the wavelength of an emitted polarized laser can be tuned between 605.8 and 608.5 (ordinary light) and 631.3 and 624.9 nm (extraordinary light). A simulation result from the transfer matrix method that matches the experimental results well is also presented. (c) 2007 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:Electrically tunable random laser action has been demonstrated in a cavity-free structure. The scattering structure was shaped by the treatment of AC, and a polymer network structure is introduced to fix it. The fluorescence of the laser dye is scattered internally and selectively amplified at the band-edge of the photonic crystal, due to the concentrate of the photonic density of state. As the electric field increased, the deformation of the polymer network causes the cholesteric liquid crystal pitch to form a gradient distribution, resulting in the widening of the bandgap, and the random laser wavelength changes accordingly. This random laser with a broad tuning range (similar to 100 nm) opens new possibilities for the design of highly efficient incoherent light source in a large area with a thickness of micron level.

Abstract:Here we report electric-field-induced, wavelength-tunable random lasing action in a liquid-crystal infiltrated disordered planar microcavity. With the increasing of external voltage from 0 V to 30 V, the emission wavelength of the random laser was continuously tuned from 648 run to 597 nm. Abstract:We demonstrate directional output from a deformed disk laser of dimensions comparable to the emission wavelength. Unlike larger deformed cavity lasers, which exhibit universal output directionality determined by chaotic ray dynamics, the far-field patterns differ between lasing modes. The directional emission results from weak coupling of isotropic high-quality modes to anisotropic low-quality modes, combined with chiral symmetry breaking of clockwise and counterclockwise propagating waves. This mechanism makes it possible to control the output properties of wavelength-scale lasers.

Abstract:Envelope shaping and wavelength tuning for resonance modes of lasers have always been promising topics, especially, in extending the functionalities of microcavities which are popular platforms for light confinement and generation. In this paper, a scattering-assisted fiber microcavity laser is proposed with function of spectral shaping. The fiber microcavity supports a liquid crystal micropillar with flexibly controllable scattering, which plays an important role to enhance the laser emission and enable whispering-gallery-mode lasing with variable spectral envelope that is defined by controlling the state of liquid crystal molecules. Our results show that external fields can change refractive index and disorder of the liquid crystal, and the resonant wavelengths of the whispering-gallery-mode laser exhibit opposite tuning regularity under the action of voltage and temperature. Moreover, using a patterned voltage control, spectrally definable hybrid laser emission is realized, laying a solid foundation for the research of spectral programmable soft-materials based lasers.

Abstract:The introduction of liquid crystals into microcavities has garnered considerable attention for their exceptional tunability and high sensitivity to external perturbation factors within their distinct phase states. Here, a novel light source with both wavelength tunability and an exceptionally narrow linewidth is presented. This innovation is realized by strategically manipulating LC molecules, transitioning them from a well-aligned state to a disordered state with increasing temperature. The microcavity is tailored to support bound states in the continuum, a cutting-edge concept in photonic research that allows for light localization with minimal loss. In the pursuit of potential biocompatibility and to reduce cytotoxicity, indium phosphide colloid quantum dots are opted to serve as the emissive carriers within the system. An ultra-narrow linewidth light emission of 0.039 nm is observed, corresponding to a quality factor reaching 16668, along with a tunable range of 1.21 nm and a temperature sensitivity of 33.52 pm K-1. The invention's compact size and tunable character make it an ideal candidate for a variety of potential applications, such as eco-friendly sensors with minimal ecological impact, optical modulators with precise control over light, and adaptable photonic devices that can be integrated with a diverse array of materials and configurations. A tunable ultra-narrow linewidth light emission from a liquid-crystal-based photonic crystal cavity is experimentally demonstrated. The article thoroughly studies the design of cavities, ultra-narrow linewidth light sources based on InP quantum dot, and liquid crystal-assisted wavelength tuning. Abstract:Lasing was achieved in a new type of random laser: the planar random microcavity laser. The laser consists of a planar microcavity with a random gain layer. Optical confinement by the two-dimensional random cavity and the one-dimensional planar microcavity drastically reduces the number of resonant modes. As a result, the laser output is highly directional (the divergence angle is 1.68 degrees) with an extremely narrow-linewidth and ultralow threshold. All these phenomena are explained in terms of the coupling of random cavity modes and planar microcavity modes. The results demonstrate an important step towards applications of random lasers.

Abstract:Electrically responsive photonic crystals represent one of the most promising intelligent material candidates for technological applications in optoelectronics. In this research, dye-doped polymer-stabilized cholesteric liquid crystals（PSCLCs） with negative dielectric anisotropy were fabricated, and mirrorless lasing with an electrically tunable wavelength was successfully achieved. Unlike conventional liquid-crystal lasers, the proposed laser aided in tuning the emission wavelength through controlling the reflection bandwidth based on gradient pitch distribution. The principal advantage of the electrically controlled dye-doped PSCLC laser is that the electric field is applied parallel to the helical axis, which changes the pitch gradient instead of rotating the helix axis, thus keeping the heliconical structure intact during lasing. The broad tuning range（～110 nm） of PSCLC lasers,coupled with their stable emission performance, continuous tunability, and easy fabrication, leads to its numerous potential applications in intelligent optoelectronic devices, such as sensing, medicine, and display.

Abstract:<p>Manipulation of laser emission offers promising opportunities for the generation of new spatial dimensions and applications, particularly in nanophotonics, super‐resolution imaging, and data transfer devices. However, the ability to control laser modes and wavelength in a microcavity remains challenging. Here, a novel approach is demonstrated to control laser modes by manipulating the 3D‐optical confinement, chirality, and orientations in a Fabry−Pérot microcavity with cholesteric liquid crystal droplets. Different configurations of intracavity micro‐/nanostructures generate versatile dimensions of laser modes, while the significantly reduced laser mode volume further leads to single‐mode lasing. Theoretical analysis is carried out to support this interesting discovery. Finally, switchable lasing wavelength with various surface anchoring forces and pH interactions is demonstrated. This novel concept not only provides a simple yet highly versatile method to manipulate laser emissions, but deepens insight into how molecules interact with and modulate laser light, laying the foundation for the development of tunable photonic devices at the molecular level. Promising applications include highly selective laser devices, laser‐emission imaging, and bioinspired sensing.</p>

Abstract:A band-gap-tailored random laser with a wide tunable range and low threshold through infrared radiation is demonstrated. When fluorescent dyes are doped into the liquid crystal and heavily doped chiral agent system,we demonstrate a wavelength tuning random laser instead of a side-band laser, which is caused by the combined effect of multi-scattering of liquid crystal（LC） and band-gap control. Through rotating the infrared absorbing material on the side of the LC cell, an adjustable range for random lasing of 80 nm by infrared light irradiation was observed.

Abstract:We present an experimental study of an electrically tunable laser based on liquid-crystal elements and analyse theoretically its main working principles. The laser structure includes two polymer-stabilised cholesteric-liquid-crystal slabs that act as polarisation-sensitive reflectors, and a dye-doped nematic layer sandwiched between them. The wavelength of lasing can be changed by modifying the optical retardation of the nematic layer by means of a low-amplitude square wave. For all wavelengths the laser light is circularly polarised with opposite handedness to that of the cholesteric mirrors. Good laser performance has been achieved, with low thresholds and quasi-continuous tuning ranges. The laser threshold varies with the wavelength, and was found to be highly dependent on the spatial location of the indium-tin-oxide (ITO) electrodes, inside or outside the laser resonator. A theoretical account for this effect is given using simulations based on the Berreman 4 × 4 matrix method.

Abstract:We present the principle, design, packaging and measurement results of widely tunable V-cavity lasers. By using a novel half-wave coupler, single-mode lasing with high side mode-suppression-ratio is achieved. Single-electrode controlled wide-band wavelength tuning with Vernier effect is realized. The full-band tuning of 50 channels with 100 GHz spacing is demonstrated by further employing temperature induced gain spectrum shift. The laser is packaged into a small-form-factor 9-pin TOSA, and the electronic driver has been developed for the wavelength tuning and direct modulation. The advantages of compactness, fabrication simplicity, and easy wavelength control offer great potential for the tunable laser to be used in low-cost access and data center networks, as well as in portable devices for spectroscopic analysis.

Abstract:A novel designed method for tunable wavelength microcavity organic electroluminescent diode (MOLED) based on the birefringence of liquid crystal was presented. By modulated the refractive index of liquid crystal, the device could radiate with different wavelength continuously. The simulated result showed that the tunable range could reach to 60 nm and the full width of half maximum is 5.5 nm. The device could be applied to wavelength converter and tunable light source.

Abstract:Liquid-crystal microcavity lasers have attracted considerable attention because of their extraordinary tunability and sensitive response to external stimuli, and they operate generally within a specific phase. Here, we demonstrate a liquid-crystal microcavity laser operated in the phase transition, in which the reorientation of liquid-crystal molecules occurs from aligned to disordered states. A significant wavelength shift of the microlaser is observed, resulting from the dramatic changes in the refractive index of liquid-crystal microdroplets during the phase transition. This phase-transition microcavity laser is then exploited for sensitive thermal sensing, enabling two-order-of-magnitude enhancement in sensitivity compared with the nematic-phase microlaser operated far from the transition point. Experimentally, we demonstrate an exceptional sensitivity of -40 nm/K and an ultrahigh resolution of 320 uK. The phase-transition microcavity laser features compactness, softness, and tunability, showing great potential for high-performance sensors, optical modulators, and soft matter photonics.

Abstract:By changing the doping concentration of the chiral agent to adjust the relative position of the reflection band of cholesteric liquid crystals and the fluorescence emission spectrum of the dye, photonic band-edge and random lasing were observed, respectively. The reflection band of the cholesteric phase liquid crystal can also be controlled by adjusting the temperature: the reflection band is blue-shifted with increasing temperature, and a reversible switch from photonic band-edge to random lasing is obtained. Furthermore, the laser line width can be thermally adjusted from 1.1 nm (at 27 degrees C) to 4.6 nm (at 32.1 degrees C). A thermally tunable polarization state of a random laser from dual cells was observed, broadening the field of application liquid crystal random lasers.

Abstract:In waveguided nematic liquid crystal random lasers (NLCRLs), we realize polarized random laser (RL) emission and discover that the waveguide effect reduces the transmission loss of the RL whose polarization is parallel to the liquid crystal molecules (LCMs). Compared with the traditional liquid crystal random lasers, the waveguide NLCRLs can achieve the regulation of RLs strength, polarization, and wavelength in the same structure. The electric field can drive the rotation of LCMs to control the RL polarization and intensity. The drop of horizontal polarization laser and the increase of vertical polarization laser prove the role of the waveguide effect. In addition, the disorder of the waveguided NLCRLs is highly sensitive to temperature, which makes it easy to control the wavelength and intensity of the RL. As the temperature rises, the waveguide effect is weakened, resulting in a weakening of the restriction along liquid crystal (LC) cell normal direction. The reduced laser intensity verifies the role of the waveguide effect.

Abstract:This letter reports a thermally tunable and electrically switchable three-layer 3D Bragg resonance cavity consisting of dye-doped cholesteric-liquid-crystal (DDCLC) microdroplet, polyglycerol-2 and hollow-glass-microsphere (HGM). The whispering-gallery-mode and photonic bandgap mode can be controlled by varying the CLC refractive indices in HGM. The effects of the temperature and electric field on the peaks wavelengths were studied. The study results present the prospect of thermally and electrically controlled the output mode of the microlaser and such solid shell tunable DDCLC microsphere lasers have an outstanding potential applications in integrated microlasers, tunable optical devices and highly sensitive sensor.

Abstract:With the rapid development of information technology, a wavelength-tunable vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) is urgently needed as an optical signal source in dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM). Liquid crystal tunable VCSEL realized by utilizing the birefringence characteristics of liquid crystal has the advantages of stable polarization, high reliability, continuous wavelength tuning. In this paper, a liquid crystal tunable VCSEL structure based on intracavity sub wavelength grating is designed, and the influence of liquid crystal layer and sub wavelength grating on the wavelength tuning characteristics of VCSEL are analyzed and studied in depth. The results show that the thickness of the liquid crystal layer in the tunable VCSEL structure not only affects the wavelength tuning range, but also determines the mode hopping in the tuning process. In addition, an effective refractive index antireflection layer is formed by designing the subwavelength grating structure, and the refractive index difference between the liquid crystal layer and the semiconductor layer is optimized to further improve the wavelength tuning range and tuning efficiency. When the center wavelength is 980 nm, the tuning range is increased by 42%, reaching 41 nm, and the wavelength tuning efficiency is increased by 41%. It provides a new method of designing the VCSEL laser with high beam quality and continuous wavelength tuning.

Abstract:A thermally tunable random laser in dye-doped liquid crystals (DDLCs) is reported. The gain medium of PM597 dye-doped E7 nematic LC is injected into a glass cell. The experimental results show that the random lasing is still obtained when the cell temperature becomes higher, even above the nematic-isotropic transition, and that its polarization changes at the same time. Temperature has little effect on the full width at half maxiumum of the random lasing. The center wavelength of the random lasing shifts from 575.69nm to 593.43nm when the temperature increases from 25.5 degrees C to 148 degrees C. Meanwhile, a random laser based on a solution of laser dye is first reported in this article. The reasons are possibly that nanoparticles consisting of dye molecules provide a new scattering mechanism in both solution and isotropic phase.
