Abstract:We have performed both experimental and numerical analyses of interleaved bidirectional transmission of 16 times 10-Gb/s dense-wavelength-division-multiplexed (DWDM) signals using differential-phase-shift-keying (DPSK) modulation format and in-line semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs). The constant intensity of DPSK-modulated DWDM signals enabled us to mitigate the crosstalk effects in the bidirectional SOA. We have demonstrated error-free bidirectional transmission of 16 channels over an 80-km single-mode fiber (SMF) with matching dispersion-compensating fiber and in-line amplification provided by an SOA. SOAs can be used for bidirectional transmission if the facet reflections can be controlled. In order to understand further the effect of the SOA facet reflectivity on transmission results, we developed a simulation model for our system. Based on the good agreement between our simulation and experimental results, we have found out that the system reflections can be minimized by careful optimization of the bias current and reflectivity of the SOA

Abstract:Orthogonal time division multiplexing (OrthTDM) interleaves sinc-shaped pulses to form a high baud-rate signal, with a rectangular spectrum suitable for multiplexing into a Nyquist WDM (N-WDM)-like signal. The problem with generating sinc-shaped pulses is that they theoretically have infinite durations, and even if time bounded for practical implementation, they still require a filter with a long impulse response, hence a large physical size. Previously a method of creating chirped-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) pulses with a chirped arrayed waveguide (AWG) filter, then converting them into interleaved quasi-sinc pulses using dispersive fiber (DF), has been proposed. This produces a signal with a wider spectrum than the equivalent N-WDM signal. We show that a modification to the scheme enables the spectral extent to be reduced for the same data rate. We then analyse the key factors in designing an OrthTDM transmitter, and relate these to the performance of a N-WDM system. We show that the modified transmitter reduces the required guard band between the N-WDM channels. We also simulate a simpler scheme using an unchirped finite-impulse response filter of similar size, which directly creates truncated-sinc pulses without needing a DF. This gives better system performance than either chirped scheme.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a bidirectional radio-over-fiber (RoF) system based on a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA). In this system, phase-modulated 5.25-GHz radio frequency (RF) carrying 850 Mb/s is used for the downstream signal. Optical envelope detection of 10-GHz RF carrying 850 Mb/s is achieved in an RSOA. Both signals share a single fiber link and the same light source by exploiting optical carrier remodulaiton. Moreover, there is no need to employ RF down-conversion technology for RoF uplink. This makes the proposed system simpler and more cost-effective. The experimental results indicate that after simultaneous transmission of downstream and upstream signals over 25-km fiber, the receiver sensitivities are -22 and -14.5 dBm, respectively.

Abstract:Optical interconnect can achieve a substantial increase in the number of nodes and switching capability for data centers, by virtue of their low power consumption and high bandwidth. In this paper, we propose a single-wavelength switch architecture based on two-stage AWGR for data centers. Then the single-wavelength design is extended to support multi-wavelength, which has higher scalability but lower hardware complexity and power consumption. We prove that the single wavelength architecture is internal strictly non-blocking. When the incoming traffic is externally blocked, a buffer allocation algorithm is designed to allocate feedforward and feedback FDL for the blocked packets. Based on the simulation results, the proposed switch can provide higher throughput, lower average latency, and a 0 out-of-order ratio compared to existing solutions.

Abstract:A novel amplified modulating retro-reflector (AMRR) based on a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA) is proposed and a bidirectional free-space optical communication (FSO) system including both downstream and upstream links is experimentally demonstrated with only a single light source using this AMRR. The RSOA-based AMRR can provide a net gain more than 4dB and support the modulation bit rate up to 1.25Gbit/s. The bidirectional FSO transmission performance is evaluated by observing eye diagrams and measuring bit error rate (BER) results of both 10-Gbit/s DPSK downstream and 1.25-Gbit/s OOK upstream signals. The factors that limit the modulation bit rate and transmission quality are analyzed. The power penalties of both links are less than 0.69dB in the bidirectional FSO system at the BER of 1×10-3.

Abstract:The use of SOAs as in-line amplifiers in WDM systems leads to crosstalk as a result of cross-gain modulation. Constant intensity modulation format such as differential phase-shift-keying is in principle immune to XGM-induced crosstalk in SOAs. We report the reduction of crosstalk in a bi-directional system and successfully realize 16 x 10Gb/s DWDM signals transmission over 80 km SMF-28 using DPSK modulation format for the first time. Abstract:For the purpose of revisiting the semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) ability for large-band amplification in the context of wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) coherent systems, we numerically investigate nonlinear impairments brought by SOA for polarization multiplexed quadrature phase-shift keying and polarization multiplexed 16-quadrature amplitude modulation terrestrial transmissions. In order to provide a deep understanding of these impairments, we perform a step-by-step approach by assessing the transmission performance of a sole SOA cascade and an SOA-amplified transmission system using linear and then nonlinear fiber. For the same purposes, we also study these impairments for a single-channel transmission even though the final goal is to design a WDM SOA-amplified system with a larger bandwidth than the EDFA-based systems. We show some interesting results on the span-after-span accumulation of SOA nonlinear impairments, as it has been done similarly for the fiber nonlinearities, in the context of dispersion managed or unmanaged coherent systems. Design guidelines of both SOAs for amplification purposes and SOA-amplified transmission systems are derived from this investigation. Finally, we point out promising results for SOA-based transmissions, for particular system configurations that follow these guidelines.

Abstract:Return loss, a key characteristic of the optical add/drop multiplexer (OADM), has become an urgent and challenging problem in the development of the integrated grating-assisted OADM. In this paper, a novel design approach to achieve low-return-loss integrated grating-assisted OADMs is proposed. The reflective spectrum is properly controlled to ensure the backreflection peaks can fall outside the wavelength channel, so that the return loss can be kept low. Meanwhile, it can also be found that the tolerance in fabrication process is enlarged. Simulation on the null-coupler OADM shows that, by employing the proposed method, the return loss at both input- and add-port can drop to lower than -53 dB from -38 and 0 dB, respectively, and be kept below -53 dB even with a tilt angle ranging from 3.2/spl deg/ to 3.5/spl deg/. The application of this method on the design of the symmetric-coupler OADM is also presented.

Abstract:The use of uncoated facets on the echelle grating in a monolithic InP WDM demux leads to a reflection loss of 5.65 dB for an index of refraction of approximately 3.18. This loss can be largely eliminated by coating the out of plane facet with gold, but it involves another processing step. An alternative is to use total internal reflecting (retro-reflecting) facets. We have fabricated a WDM demultiplexer in InP for use at 1550 nm using an echelle with retro-reflecting facets and have compared its performance to another demux on the same wafer using an echelle with flat facets.

Abstract:A scheme for mitigating patterning effects in wavelength conversion by using a concatenated semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and electroabsorption modulator (EAM) is proposed. The optimization of the parameters of the semiconductor devices and receiver electronics is theoretically investigated. The bit error ratio (BER) of the output signals in both the co-propagating and the counter-propagating configurations is quantitatively evaluated. The simulation results indicate that the patterning effect in wavelength conversion due to the slow recovery of the carrier density in the SOA can be well compensated by a concatenated EAM. The simulation results are confirmed by preliminary pump-probe experiment using a 10Gb/s clock pulse train. (C) 2008 Optical Society of America

Abstract:A novel method to suppress the waveform distortion and compress frequency chirp in SOAs as in-line amplifiers in WDM networks is proposed and experimented. The results show that the signal distortion and pattern effect are reduced significantly and over 5dB expansion of input dynamic range is achieved.

Abstract:We propose a novel dispersion-free interleaver using optical delay lines by accurately locating the zeros in the transfer function. It has been implemented with the design of interleaver pairs with the same amplitude responses but opposite phase responses for bidirectional dense wavelength-division multiplexed (DWDM) transmission systems. The measured results are consistent with device simulation. We have further modified the original three-port design using unidirectional amplification, and a four-port interleaver has been built and demonstrated to achieve bidirectional DWDM transmission. In this paper, we fully studied and verified the applications of our four-port interleavers in bidirectional transmission. We demonstrated a bidirectional strain-line system over 210 km and a recirculating loop transmission over a 500-km standard single-mode fiber using 10-Gb/s ON-OFF keying signals. Furthermore, we also demonstrated return-to-zero differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) and nonreturn-to-zero DPSK modulation formats for more than 230 km of transmission. For comparison, the different amplification functions, such as the erbium-doped fiber amplifier and the semiconductor optical amplifier, have also been probed in this paper. The experimental results have clearly illustrated the desirable functions of this novel bidirectional amplifier in this dispersion-free interleaver.

Abstract:Semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) is regarded as a promising candidate to amplify the optical signal in next-generation access network, especially for O-band signal transmission. However, the SOA-based system suffers from the pattern-dependent effect due to its gain saturation. Compared to digital signal processing (DSP) at receiver, DSP in the transmitter can reduce implementation complexity, which is attractive for the multi-user system. In this paper, we propose three methods to mitigate the pattern-dependent effect in SOA and compare their performance based on: 1) look-up-table (LUT) considering pattern-dependent effect, 2) pre-distortion without considering pattern-dependent effect, 3) probabilistic shaping (PS). The performance of three mitigation methods is investigated in an intensity modulation with direct detection (IM/DD) 4-ary pulse-amplitude-modulation (PAM-4) transmission system at O-band. Our research results show that all these schemes can improve the receiver dynamic range of PAM-4 signals at 50 Gbit/s and 100 Gbit/s. Moreover, PS and LUT can also improve the receiver dynamic range of 75-Gbit/s PAM-8 signals.

Abstract:Summary form only given.The semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) is a promising candidate for cascaded optical fibre systems because of the coverage of the entire fiber transmission window and the possibilities for integration and low cost. Bi-directional transmission can utilize efficiently the optical fiber transmission bandwidth and reduce the complexity and cost of optical transmission systems and networks. SOAs as optical switches or in-line amplifiers are very suitable for bidirectional transmission systems and networks since SOAs do not need any optical isolators as often used in case of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs). In this paper, we report error-free bidirectional transmission of 4/spl times/10 Gbit/s signals using an in-line SOA. In order to reduce the intermodal distortion and cross talk in SOAs, one can operate SOAs in the small signal region or implement gain control schemes such as damping the gain of SOAs.

Abstract:In this letter, we theoretically investigate the intercarrier interference (ICI) that is induced by carrier frequency offset (CFO) and sampling frequency offset (SFO) for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) radio-over-fiber (RoF) system. A window shaping technique in the time domain at the OFDM receiver is presented, which can improve the tolerance to the frequency offset and reduce ICI. Compared with the conventional demodulation scheme, the simulation shows that the utilization of the window shaping method can increase the resistance to residual CFO to about eight times at power penalty of 2 dB. It can also improve the tolerance to SFO. A 4.65 Gb/s 4QAM OFDM RoF system over 40 km fiber link and 60 GHz wireless link is demonstrated experimentally. The bit error rate (BER) performance of the scheme is measured, with and without the proposed window shaping method, respectively. About 0.9 dB improvement of the required receiver power at a BER of $10^{-3}$ shows the feasibility of the window shaping method for ICI reduction in OFDM RoF system.

Abstract:The increasing demand on the internet trafficking to meet the demands of video streaming and mobile communication has exerted too much pressure. Abstract:A DBR-laser-based SOA-assisted extended-reach EML (AXEL) was investigated in order to improve the optical feedback tolerance. The performance was tested in relative intensity noise measurement and fiber transmission experiment. A superior optical feedback tolerance was obtained in comparison with a conventional AXEL. The excess RIN induced by optical feedback is suppressed at 3-dB higher feedback power for the DBR-AXEL. 40 km fiber transmission of 10-Gbit/s signal with a feedback factor of −15 dB was achieved. The power budget was 41.3 dB. The feedback-induced power penalty was 0.52 dB.

Abstract:This paper theoretically investigates the signal degradation induced by intersubcarrier interference and frequency-selective fading in orthogonal frequency-division-multiplexing radio-over-fiber systems. Turbo codes and bit interleaver technologies are proposed to effectively mitigate unbalanced error distribution because of intersubcarrier interference and frequency-selective fading. Experimental results show that the receiver sensitivities are improved as far as 5 dB after 50-km SMF-28 transmission for 6.25-Gb/s wireless signals on optical generated 60-GHz carrier.
