Abstract:In this paper, the robust stability and stabilization problem for a class of linear uncertain neutral systems with time-varying delays is considered. Based on an augmented Lyapunov functional, by employing linear matrix inequality (LMI) technique and free-weighting matrix approach, sufficient conditions for the design of state feedback controller is presented. The derived controller is applied for the robust stabilization of the linear neutral system in the presence of time-varying delays and parameter uncertainties. The results are established in the form of LMI, which can be easily solved by standard numerical software. Finally, numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the validity and less conservatism of the results.

Abstract:The problem of robust control for discrete time-delay systems with norm-bounded uncertainties was studied. A new sufficient condition of delay-dependent robust stabilizability was derived by introducing a zero formula and free weighting matrices. An explicit expression of the desired controller was also developed based on the solution of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Without any system transformation or inequalities to estimate the upper bound of the cross terms in the forward difference of Lyapunov functional, the corresponding conservatism on the stability condition is reduced. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of design procedure.

Abstract:A nonlinear stochastic optimal control strategy for minimizing the first-passage failure of quasi integrable Hamiltonian systems (multi-degree-of-freedom integrable Hamiltonian systems subject to light dampings and weakly random excitations) is proposed. The equations of motion for a controlled quasi integrable Hamiltonian system are reduced to a set of averaged Itô stochastic differential equations by using the stochastic averaging method. Then, the dynamical programming equations and their associated boundary and final time conditions for the control problems of maximization of reliability and mean first-passage time are formulated. The optimal control law is derived from the dynamical programming equations and the control constraints. The final dynamical programming equations for these control problems are determined and their relationships to the backward Kolmogorov equation governing the conditional reliability function and the Pontryagin equation governing the mean first-passage time are separately established. The conditional reliability function and the mean first-passage time of the controlled system are obtained by solving the final dynamical programming equations or their equivalent Kolmogorov and Pontryagin equations. An example is presented to illustrate the application and effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.

Abstract:Time-delay is unavoidable, encountered in many practical systems such as networked control systems, communication networks, manufacturing, and biology. On the one hand, it often represents a source of instability and oscillation. On the other hand, the appearance of delay can have a stabilizing effect, and delayed feedback control can be used to stabilize some unstable systems. Considering its theoretical and practical importance, increasing attention has been focused on the analysis and synthesis of time-delay systems, and various new approaches have been proposed to reduce their conservatism. The aim of reducing the conservatism of delay-dependent stability criteria is to establish new stability criteria to provide a maximal allowable delay as large as possible. Among different techniques, the reduced conservatism is mainly obtained by constructing an improved Lyapunov functional and employing a tighter bound on some weighted cross products. A great number of effective methods have been provided such as delay-partitioning method, convex combination method, Wirtinger-based inequality, and Bessel–Legendre inequality.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the problem of the delay-dependent robust stability of neutral systems with mixed delays and time-varying structured uncertainties. By considering the cross-terms with additional design parameters, a complete form of Lyapunov–Krasovskii functional is constructed. Then some free weighting matrices are introduced, and a sufficient stability condition is obtained in terms of linear matrix inequalities. The obtained criterion is dependent on the sizes of neutral delay and discrete delay and are less conservative than those produced by previous approaches. Numerical examples are given to illustrate both the improvement the proposed method provides over some existing ones and the relationship between the neutral- and discrete-delay.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the problem of stability analysis for neutral stochastic delay systems. Firstly, expectations of stochastic cross terms containing the Itô integral are investigated by the martingale theory. Based on this, an improved delay-dependent stability criterion is derived for neutral stochastic delay systems. In the derivation process, the mathematical development avoids bounding stochastic cross terms, and neither the model transformation method nor free-weighting-matrix method is used. Thus the method leads to a simple criterion and shows less conservatism. Finally, two examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness and reduced conservatism of the proposed conditions.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with ℋ∞ model reduction for continuous-time linear switched systems with time-varying delay. For a given stable switched system, our attention is focused on construction of a reduced-order model such that the error system is exponentially stable with a prescribed weighted ℋ∞ performance. By applying the average dwell time approach and the piecewise Lyapunov function technique, delay-dependent/deley-independent sufficient conditions are proposed in terms of linear matrix inequality (LMI) to guarantee the exponential stability and the weighted ℋ∞ performance for the error system. The model reduction problem is solved by using the projection approach, which casts the model reduction problem into a sequential minimization problem subject to LMI constraints by employing the cone complementary linearization algorithm. A numerical example is provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed theory.

Abstract:In this paper, an interval estimation scheme is developed for delayed switched positive systems (DSPS) with mode-dependent average dwell time switching. A lossless zonotopic estimation approach is proposed for the delayed intersection zonotope with the positive generator matrix. First, considering the existence of asynchronism between the system mode and the correction matrix mode, the mismatched intersection zonotope is constructed for DSPS to verify the consistency between the system model and outputs. Then, by utilizing the introduced radius definitions, the ℓ∞ performance is addressed to optimize the size of delayed intersection zonotopes. Subsequently, we present a joint-design approach of switching signals and the mode-dependent correction matrix by constructing positive generator matrix-based delayed radius functions. Furthermore, guaranteed nonnegative state bounds are derived for the considered DSPS based on the proposed lossless zonotopic estimation criteria. Finally, detailed simulations are conducted to validate the feasibility and superiority of the developed methods.

Abstract:Delay system identification problem is studied in this paper. Converting to an optimization problem, a method using global optimization algorithms is proposed to identify concurrently all the parameters, including both continuous variables, such as the coefficients of the model, and discrete variable, time delay. Two global optimization methods, tabu search (TS) and simulated annealing (SA), are developed to deal with this problem. Simulation results show that both the TS and SA methods can identify the delay system successfully.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the problem of delay-dependent robust stability for uncertain discrete singular systems with time-varying delays. Without introducing the free-weighting matrices to deal with the cross terms, a new and improved delay-dependent condition is established for the nominal systems to be regular, causal, and stable via a new Lyapunov function employing the integrated lower and upper time-delay bounds. The condition is also extended to the uncertain case. A numerical example is given to illustrate that the proposed methods are effective and lead to less conservatism than the existing ones.
A Sensitivity Minimization Approach to the Distributed Average Tracking Problem

Abstract:This paper intends to present a novel sensitivity minimization perspective to the distributed average tracking (also called dynamic average consensus) problem, where the agents are expected to track the average of a set of reference signals. For the classic proportional-integral (PI) average tracking algorithm, we define a new network sensitivity function, which captures the evolution of the tracking error with respect to the reference signals. We show how to choose the parameters of the PI algorithm to minimize the H-infinity norm of the network sensitivity function, implying that the upper bound of the tracking error is minimized in the H-infinity norm sense for all reference signals of bounded power. Considering that the reference signals are generally of low frequency, we further study the weighted H-infinity optimization problem of the network sensitivity function and give conditions under which the PI algorithm will have a better tracking performance for low-frequency reference signals. Finally, simulation examples are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the results.
A New Delay-Dependent Stabilization Method for Networked Control Systems

Abstract:This paper revisits the state feedback stabilization problem for a class of discrete-time networked control systems (NCSs), where both time delays and packet losses are simultaneously considered. By constructing a proper Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional and by employing the free-weighting matrices technique, a new delay-dependent stability condition is presented for the resulting closed-loop system. Based on the obtained stability condition, the corresponding stabilizing controller design method is also proposed, where Cone complementarity linearization (CCL) approach is used and a feasible solution can be obtained by solving a minimization problem in terms of linear matrix inequalities. Finally, simulation results are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approaches.

Abstract:This paper provides an improved delay-range-dependent stability criterion for discrete-time systems with interval time-varying delay. Unlike some previous results, where the free-weighting matrix technique or the model transformation method is employed, we derive the criterion via introducing a finite sum inequality approach. It is shown that the proposed criterion is less conservative than some existing ones. Abstract:The problem of weighted H ∞ model reduction for continuous time-delay switched system is considered. The delay-dependent approaches are used to construct a reduced- order stable system such that the error system with respect to a given delay switched system is exponentially stable and has a prescribed weighted H ∞ performance. The average dwell time approach and the linear matrix inequality (LMI) technique are utilized to establish sufficient conditions that guarantee the exponential stability and the weighted H ∞ performance for the error system. A numerical algorithm is proposed to implement the model reduction. The usefulness of the proposed methodology is demonstrated by an illustrative example.

Abstract:In this paper, the delay margin problem of a linear system with multiple delays is investigated. Estimations for allowable delay bounds of the system are provided in the form of matrix measure. By means of the weighted matrix measure and optimization technologies, the conservatism of estimated delay bounds is reduced. Numerical examples show that the weighted matrix measure has better performance in estimating the delay margin of the system than usual matrix measures.

Abstract:Motivated by topics and issues critical to human health, the problem studied in this work derives from the modeling and stabilizing control of electrical cardiac activity in order to maximize the efficiency and safety of treatment for cardiac disease. In this paper we consider nonlinear minimax control problems constrained by an uncertain modified bidomain model of cardiac tissue electrophysiology system, in order to take into account the influence of noises in data and time-delays in signal transmission. The state system is a degenerate nonlinear coupled system of reaction-diffusion equations in the shape of a set of delay differential equations coupled with a set of delay partial differential equations with multiple time-varying delays. The concept of our minimax control approach consists in setting the problem in the worst-case disturbances which leads to the game theory in which the controls and disturbances play antagonistic roles. The proposed strategy consists in controlling these instabilities by acting on certain data to maintain the system in a desired state. First, the mathematical model is introduced and its well-posedness is studied. Second, the minimax control problem is formulated. Afterwards the Frechet differentiability of nonlinear solution map from the couple control-disturbance input to the solution of state system is assessed as well as stability of the derived sensitive system. The existence of an optimal solution is proved and first-order necessary optimality conditions are established by using sensitivity and adjoint calculus.

Abstract:This letter proposes a method for calculating the sensitivity of delay margin with respect to system parameters. According to the property that the delay margin is achieved when the rightmost eigenvalues of the close-loop system locate exactly on the imaginary axis, a characteristic equation with inclusion of the delay margin is established. By differentiating the characteristic equation and further introducing normalization condition for the eigenvector, the sensitivity of the delay margin with respect to any given parameters can be obtained by solving a set of sparse linear equations. Due to the general differential and algebraic equation used in the derivation, the proposed delay margin sensitivity analysis method applies to various power system models and control problems.

Abstract:In this article, a novel sensitivity minimization approach is proposed to optimize the performance of proportional-integral (PI) dynamic average consensus (DAC) algorithms subject to measurement noises and model uncertainties. Network sensitivity and complementary sensitivity functions are defined to characterize the effects of the reference signals and measurement noises on the tracking error, respectively. Minimization of the H-infinity norms of network sensitivity and complementary sensitivity functions, describing how large the PI DAC algorithm amplifies the reference and noise signals in the worst case, are conducted to optimize the tracking performance with respect to the reference signals and measurement noises without requiring prior knowledge. Further, by studying the weighted H-infinity optimization of the network sensitivity functions, necessary and sufficient conditions are provided for the PI DAC algorithm to have a good tracking performance for low-frequency reference signals and high-frequency measurement noises. The proposed sensitivity minimization approach is shown to be a robust approach, by considering the PI DAC algorithm in the presence of norm-bounded additive uncertainties. The robust weighted H-infinity performance specification is formulated and a sufficient condition is provided, relying on the network topology, the bound of the uncertainties, and the parameters of the DAC algorithms. A tradeoff relationship between the tracking performance and robustness is unveiled. The special case of proportional DAC algorithms is similarly discussed.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the problem of stability and stabilization of neutral time-delay systems. A new delay-dependent stability condition is derived in terms of linear matrix inequality by constructing a new Lyapunov functional and using some integral inequalities without introducing any free-weightingg matrices. On the basis of the obtained stability condition. a stabilizing method is also proposed. Using an iterative algorithm. the state feedback controller can be obtained.
