Abstract:We investigate the transmission characteristics of a two-level optically labeled signal with amplitude-shift keying (ASK) and differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) modulation. Theoretical analysis suggests that a precompensation scheme has a better transmission performance for a 10-Gbit/s ASK payload and 2.5-Gbit/s DPSK label compared with postcompensation, which has been confirmed by our transmission experiment. The limitations resulting from the extinction ratio and the laser linewidth are also discussed.

Abstract:A scheme for compensation of dispersion-induced power fading is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The system transmits two modulated laser lights via a wavelength division multiplexer and a wavelength division demultiplexer. By optimizing the power ratio and the phase difference between the two modulated signals, the dispersion-induced power fading can be adequately compensated. A key significance of our approach is that no adjustments are required when the input radio frequency signal scans over a broad bandwidth of 1 to 12 GHz. We successfully demonstrate the compensation of the power fading for both 20- and 30-km fiber links. An improvement of spurious-free dynamic range is also achieved. Abstract:Dispersion Management is an effective technique to suppress the nonlinear impairment in fiber transmission systems, which includes tuning the amounts of precompensation, residual dispersion per span (RDPS), and net residual dispersion (NRD) of the systems. For self-phase modulation (SPM)-limited systems, optimizing the NRD is necessary because it can greatly improve the system performance. In this paper, an analytical method is presented to optimize NRD for SPM-limited dispersion-managed systems. The method is based on the correlation between the nonlinear impairment and the output pulse broadening of SPM-limited systems; therefore, dispersion-managed systems can be optimized through minimizing the output single-pulse broadening. A set of expressions is derived to calculate the output pulse broadening of the SPM-limited dispersion-managed system, from which the analytical result of optimal NRD is obtained. Furthermore, with the expressions of pulse broadening, how the nonlinear impairment, depends on the amounts of precompensation and RDPS can be revealed conveniently.

Abstract:We investigate power-dependent phase-matched four-wave mixing (FWM) in wavelength division multiplexing transmission lines, in which positive and negative dispersion fibers are alternately arranged to manage the dispersion and the dispersion slope. The FWM effect shows power-independent phase matching when the channel power is low. However, it is power dependent at high power. The maximum FWM conversion efficiency is shifted away from the zero channel space in the case of power-dependent phase matching. Optimization of the dispersion system for suppression of the FWM effect is determined.

Abstract:Three dispersion compensation schemes of an optical label switching transmission system were investigated,which employs 40 Gbit/s return zero differential phase-shift keying(RZ-DPSK) payload labeled with 2.5 Gbit/s on-off keying(OOK) signal based on the optical carrier suppression and separation(OCSS) technique.In the system,proposed are the receiver sensitivity of payload and label,achieving-32.4 dBm and-38.5 dBm,respectively.Using the optimal dispersion compensation scheme,after transmitted over 160 km and 320 km SMF respectively,the label can be recovered without power penalty,while the payload can be recovered with less than 2 dB and 5 dB penalty,respectively.

Abstract:We investigate the use of differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) with a reduced modulation depth (RMD) as the downstream modulation format to enhance the tolerance to both chromatic dispersion and remodulation timing misalignment. Despite the RMD, in each optical network unit the demodulated DPSK signal from the destructive port of the delay-interferometer still maintains a high extinction ratio (ER), whereas the signal from the constructive port has a very low ER and can be readily remodulated by the upstream signal. Error-free operation at 10 Gb/s was achieved in a 20-km-reach experiment without dispersion compensation and remodulation synchronization.

Abstract:We report an experimental investigation of transmission and transparent wavelength conversion properties of a two-level optically labeled signal using amplitude-shift-keying/differential-phase-shift-keying orthogonal modulation. Error-free transmission of a 10-Gb/s payload and 2.5-Gb/s label over 80-km nonzero dispersion-shifted fiber is achieved with less than 1-dB power penalty. Transparent wavelength label swapping based on four-wave mixing in a highly nonlinear fiber is also demonstrated, clearly validating this orthogonal modulation scheme as a potential solution for optical labeling.

Abstract:An essential feature of a long-haul Optical Communication System (OCS) is to transmit huge volumes of data over long distances. In OCS, fiber dispersion and Four-Wave Mixing (FWM) play negative roles in achieving this, as the propagation of the light signal, associated with the pulse, travels at varying speeds. Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) system is not spared from these identified limitations. In this work, a mathematical analysis for the dispersion and FWM was presented and validated through simulation software. The research was designed and implemented using an optical simulation software tool, OptiSystem 17.0. Transmission parameters of dispersion and Nonlinear (NL) effects due to refractive index, FWM, were considered. The research was carried out on a 125 km-long fiber link and was investigated under a 16-channel DWDM system. The effects of identified limitations on the performance of the DWDM system with channel arrangement of 100, 50, and 25 GHz were further explored. This work compared the DWDM system under these different channel arrangements. The transmission performance of the DWDM system was evaluated based on signal power, noise power, and eye pattern. The results obtained show that any increase in capacity causes significant decreases in the performance of the DWDM system. It was, however, noted that noise power is independent of an increase in bit rate. The results obtained further revealled that the launched power of the system must be reduced for better performance of the DWDM system and improved immunity against identified limitations.

Abstract:This study experimentally investigated the impact of dispersion-induced phase noise (DPN) on the transmission performance of a 100-GHz DD OFDM-RoF system. We sought to extend the transmission distance through the reduction of DPN using two digital phase noise suppression (PNS) schemes, based on the assumption that all subcarriers suffer from common DPN. The decision-aided PNS (DA-PNS) scheme treats the OFDM signal as feedback to aid in the calculation of DPN without incurring additional overhead. Pilot-aided PNS (PA-PNS) estimates the common DPN by inserting an additional optical pilot tone with guard band. Although both schemes are able to extend fiber transmission distance to beyond 150 km, the PA-PNS scheme tends to be outperformed by the DA-PNS scheme due to additional power required for the pilot tone. Nonetheless, in the DA-PNS scheme, the bandwidth of the estimated DPN must be truncated to avoid error propagation, which can result in the relatively faster increment in the transmission penalty. In contrast, the PA-PNS scheme maintains the variation in penalty to <1 dB, thereby achieving the performance that is insensitive to transmission distance.

Abstract:Digital signal processing (DSP) for high spectrum efficiency transmission system are investigated in both long-haul and short haul optical networks. For long-haul transmission, two different super-Nyquist WDM systems based on advanced post (receiver side) and pre (transmitter side) DSP are demonstrated and studied. A novel DSP scheme for this optical super-Nyquist filtering 9-QAM like signals based on multi-modulus equalization (MMEQ) without post filter are proposed and experimentally demonstrated, which directly recovers the Nyquist filtered QPSK to a 9-QAM like signal. This improved filtering tolerance and transmission performance are demonstrated in an 8-channel 112-Gb/s wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) experiment with a 25GHz-grid over 2640-km single-mode fiber (SMF). Alternatively, a novel digital super-Nyquist signal generation scheme is proposed to further suppress the Nyquist signal bandwidth and reduce the channel crosstalk without using optical pre-filtering and using. Only optical couplers are needed for super-Nyquist WDM multiplexing. Using this scheme, we successfully generate and transmit 10 channel 32-GBaud (128-Gb/s) PDM-9-QAM signals within 25-GHz grid over 2975-km at a net SE of 4 bit/s/Hz (after excluding the 20% soft-decision FEC overhead). We extend the DSP for short haul optical transmission networks by using high order QAMs. We propose and experimentally demonstrate a high speed CAP-64QAM system using direct modulation laser (DML) based on direct detection and digital equalizations. Decision-directed least mean squares (DD-LMS) are used to equalize the CAP-64QAM. Using this scheme, we successfully generate and transmit up to a record 60-Gb/s CAP-64QAM over 20-km stand single-mode fiber (SSMF) based on the DML and direct detection.

Abstract:In this letter, we report a novel amplitude shift keying/differential phase-shift keying (ASK/DPSK) optical packet encoding method that can significantly reduce the crosstalk between the ASK payload and the DPSK label through spectrum shaping. We demonstrate wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) transmission for 4 x 40 Gb/s labeled return-to-zero signals, including label swapping by Kerr switching of one of the channels, with an overall penalty of 3.3 dB for the payload and 0.3 dB for the label, clearly validating this orthogonal modulation scheme as a potential solution for future ultrahigh-speed Internet protocol-over-WDM networks..

Abstract:Wavelength reuse has been proposed as an effective solution to realize colorless optical network units (ONUs) for next-generation passive optical network with simplified maintenance and reduced cost. In this paper, we propose a wavelength reused mode-division-multiplexing (MDM) scheme for bidirectional short-reach optical access network with low mode-crosstalk multiplexer/demultiplexer (MUX/DEMUX) and few-mode fiber (FMF). In downstream (DS) transmission, one of the spatial modes in FMF is used to transmit optical carriers, while the others are used as DS signal channels. In upstream (US) transmission, the carrier is split to all the ONUs for US remodulation. By utilizing low mode-crosstalk mode MUX/DEMUX and FMF, the carrier and each signal channel can be effectively separated. Compared with other wavelength reused schemes in which the DS and US transmission are modulated in orthogonal dimension, the signal qualities on two transmission directions are independent in the proposed scheme, and symmetrical bidirectional transmission without residual remodulation crosstalk can be achieved. What is more, to reduce bidirectional Rayleigh backscattering noise, we propose to use different optical sidebands for DS and US transmission. With the proposed scheme, we experimentally demonstrate symmetrical bidirectional 2 × 12.5-Gb/s quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) orthogonal-frequency-division-multiplexing (OFDM) intensity-modulation and direct-detection transmission over 11.5-km four-mode FMF. With Rayleigh backscattering noise mitigation, a Q-factor improvement of 2 dB is achieved for the US signal at the DS signal-to-carrier power ratio of -27 dB.

Abstract:Chromatic dispersion and nonlinear impairments pose challenges in high-capacity optical transmission systems, leading to signal distortions, channel interference and diminished the transmission performances. This paper explores the utilization of dispersion compensating fibers (DCF) using different schemes to mitigate the dispersion that accumulates along the length of a fiber in a 16 × 10 Gbps high-capacity long haul WDM system over a range of 500 km. When different wavelengths of light pulses are transmitted through an optical fiber, they experience varying speeds due to the refractive index's wavelength dependency. As a result, the light pulses become temporally spread out as they travel through the fiber, and this dispersion persists throughout the fiber's length. Considering non-linear effects such as self-phase modulation (SPM) and cross-phase modulation (XPM), this paper analyze and compare the three compensation schemes of DCF in a 16 channel WDM system. Moreover the impact of non-linearities based on fiber length are also analyzed and compared. The results are evaluated by comparing metrics such as Q -factor, bit error rate (BER) and eye height. The analysis concludes that the symmetrical compensation scheme of DCF outperforms the pre- and post-compensation scheme. This finding suggests that the symmetrical compensation method offers a promising solution for high-capacity access networks, providing high spectral efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and improved flexibility.

Abstract:In a wide area WDM network with a huge capacity, dispersion limits the scope of the network. Among new ideas of dispersion compensation, dispersion compensation fiber(DCF) is the best. However, DCF can't balance the dispersion of all channels because of dispersion slope. There is surplus dispersion in some channels, so that further compensation of the surplus dispersion is needed after the using of DCF. The FP resonator is a dispersion-tunable device. The surplus dispersions of all the channels can be compensated after the using of FP resonator as a tunable receiver. The numerical results show that the radius of WDM network can be made three times as large as it would have been without this device.

Abstract:The impact of third-order dispersion (TOD) is investigated by numerical simulations in 160-Gb/s single-channel systems incorporated with dispersion mapping and optical phase conjugation (OPC). System performances using retrun-to-zero (RZ) or carrier-suppressed RZ (CSRZ) modulation format are evaluated on the optimized dispersion map. The results indicate that even though TOD has been fully compensated, the intra-channel nonlinearity induced by local TOD would degrade the system performance in nonlinear regime. The scheme with an optimized dispersion map provides a much higher performance and offers a larger tolerance on a variation of pre-compensation. CSRZ modulation format is more robust due to its tradeoff between tolerances on intra-channel nonlinearity and dispersion.

Abstract:The fundamental performance limits of coherent optical transmission systems can be observed by a simple optimization between the linear noise and the nonlinear noise generated within the system. Optical Phase Conjugation (OPC) is considered to be one of the promising techniques to compensate for optical fiber’s dispersion and nonlinearity that cause crosstalk between signals traveling through long-haul optical transmission systems, nonlinearity compensation can lead to significant information capacity and distance reach expansion of optical fiber transmission links. To get the full benefit from the deployment of OPC in optical transmission systems, a few considerations must be taken into account, such as: power profile symmetry, fiber’s dispersion slope and Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD). In this contribution, we will present our simplified theoretical predictions of optical fiber transmission systems performance that deploy mid-link OPC and multiOPC and we will show that the introduction of multi-OPC in an optical transmission system will minimize the impact of uncompensated/nondeterministic signal-signal nonlinear interactions due to fiber’s PMD and signal-noise interactions. We will show wide range of simulation and experimental results that validate the theoretical predictions of system’s performance for various types of links: dispersion managed, dispersion unmanaged, discretely amplified systems and distributed Raman amplified systems. Also, we will present an extensive experimental study shows that the deployment of mid-link OPC can provide a significant reach improvement in asymmetric lumped optical fiber links when optimizing the span length.
Advanced digital signal processing for short-haul and access network

Abstract:Digital signal processing (DSP) has been proved to be a successful technology recently in high speed and high spectrum-efficiency optical short-haul and access network, which enables high performances based on digital equalizations and compensations. In this paper, we investigate advanced DSP at the transmitter and receiver side for signal pre-equalization and post-equalization in an optical access network. A novel DSP-based digital and optical pre-equalization scheme has been proposed for bandwidth-limited high speed short-distance communication system, which is based on the feedback of receiver-side adaptive equalizers, such as least-mean-squares (LMS) algorithm and constant or multi-modulus algorithms (CMA, MMA). Based on this scheme, we experimentally demonstrate 400GE on a single optical carrier based on the highest ETDM 120-GBaud PDM-PAM-4 signal, using one external modulator and coherent detection. A line rate of 480-Gb/s is achieved, which enables 20% forward-error correction (FEC) overhead to keep the 400-Gb/s net information rate. The performance after fiber transmission shows large margin for both short range and metro/regional networks. We also extend the advanced DSP for short haul optical access networks by using high order QAMs. We propose and demonstrate a high speed multi-band CAP-WDM-PON system on intensity modulation, direct detection and digital equalizations. A hybrid modified cascaded MMA post-equalization schemes are used to equalize the multi-band CAP-mQAM signals. Using this scheme, we successfully demonstrates 550Gb/s high capacity WDM-PON system with 11 WDM channels, 55 sub-bands, and 10-Gb/s per user in the downstream over 40-km SMF.
