Abstract:A serial all-optical header processing technique is presented that is based on the two-pulse correlation principle in a SLALOM configuration. The operation is demonstrated using optical data packets with a packet header at 2.5 Gbit/s and Manchester encoded packet payload at 10 Gbit/s. Experimental evidence is provided in the case of two different output ports. A Bragg grating assisted all-optical header pre-processor based on self-phase modulation in a semiconductor optical amplifier is also presented. It is shown that the header pre-processor improves the performance of the SLALOM-based header processor and that the packet structure can be simplified.

Abstract:A Bragg grating assisted all-optical header pre-processor based on self-phase modulation in a semiconductor optical amplifier is presented. The operation principle is discussed and demonstrated on packets with an NRZ header at a data rate of 2.5 Gbit/s and a Manchester encoded payload at a data rate of 10 Gbit/s. It is also demonstrated that the header pre-processor improves the performance of an all-optical header processor based on two-pulse correlation in a SLALOM configuration.

Abstract:A 1x2 all-optical packet switch is presented. The header processing is implemented by using a SLALOM structure and an optical Rip-flop memory is used to store the processed header bits. The packets are switched in wavelength by using cross-gain modulation. Experimental results are presented.

Abstract:A novel all-optical packet switching concept with all-optical header processing and all-optical storage of the header information is presented. The header bits are processed by an optical threshold function, which acts as a flexible all-optical logic gate. The storage of the header is performed by an all-optical flip-flop based on coupled laser diodes. To demonstrate these concepts, a test bed is currently under construction in the Electro-optical communications group of Eindhoven University of Technology. We present the status of the project and experimental results.

Abstract:On-the-fly all-optical header processing and control signal generation were simultaneously realized using a dual-wavelength injection-locked Fabry-Perot laser diode. The special two-level input control signal was generated by direct modulation of a distributed feedback laser. The header processing rate is 2.5 Gb/s, the payload data rate is 10 Gb/s, and the packet length is 25.6 ns. The switching ratio for the switched control signals measured spectrally was improved from 3 dB to over 20 dB by using a polarizer. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:We will describe recent results in all-optical packet switching with all-optical header processing using Fabry-Perot laser diodes (FP-LD). First, we will report an all-optical header processor and control signal generator using a single FP-LD with a special two-intensity-level control signal and a novel self-routing address format for the data packets. We then show that the special control signal can be generated by direct modulation of a DFB laser with square electrical pulses thus simplifying implementation. We will demonstrate that a single Fabry-Perot laser diode can also serve as an all-optical on/off switch with all-optical header processing. The header rate is 5 Gb/s and the payload rate is 10 Gb/s. The all-optical on/off switch can also be realized by using a FP-LD as the header processor only and executing the packet switching at a separate stage. The two-stage implementation of all-optical on/off switch eliminates the residue header bits problems if only a single FP-LD is used. Finally, we propose an all-optical packet-switched ring network which can be constructed from the all-optical on/off switches demonstrated.

Abstract:Feature Issue on Optical Interconnection Networks (OIN). We present three optical signal processing functional blocks that enable 1×N optical packet switching. An ultrafast asynchronous multioutput all-optical header processor is demonstrated with a terahertz optical asymmetric demultiplexer in combination with a header preprocessor. It is shown that self-induced polarization rotation can be used for both the header processor and the header preprocessor. The second functional block is optical buffering. This is shown with both a laser neural network and a recirculating buffer. Related to this is a three-state all-optical memory based on coupled lasers, which increases the number of possible output states of an optical packet switch.

Abstract:We discuss how all-optical signal processing might play a role in future all-optical packet switched networks. We introduce a concept of optical packet switches that employ entirely all-optical signal processing technology. The optical packet switch is made out of three functional blocks: the optical header processing block, the optical memory block and the wavelength conversion block. The operation principle of the optical packet switch is explained. We show that these three functional blocks can be realized by using the nonlinearities of semiconductor optical amplifiers. Some technologies in these three functional blocks are described. The header processor is realized using a Terahertz Optical Asymmetric Demultiplexer. We also describe a header pre-processor to improve the extinction ratio of the header processor output. In the optical memory block, we show that an all-optical memory can be obtained by using two coupled lasers that form a master-slave configuration. The state of the optical memory is distinguished by the wavelength of the master laser. We extend the concept to an optical memory can have multiple states. In the wavelength conversion block, we demonstrate a 160 Gbit/s wavelength conversion using a single semiconductor optical amplifier in combination with a well-designed optical bandpass filter. The semiconductor optical amplifier has a gain recovery time greater than 90 ps, which corresponds to a less than 20 GHz bandwidth for conventional wavelength conversion. We show that by properly using the optical bandpass filter, ultrafast dynamics in the semiconductor optical amplifier can be employed for wavelength conversion at ultrahigh bit-rates.

Abstract:We demonstrate an all-optical label and payload separator based on nonlinear polarization rotation in a semiconductor optical amplifier. The proposed scheme uses a variable packet length composed of a label and payload information signal modulated intensity modulation and differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) format, respectively. The separation is obtained by using the payload signal itself, exploiting the DPSK feature of being power constant, as a pumping light source. Therefore, the proposed scheme is asynchronous and does not need an external control signal.

Abstract:We present some progress in the field of optical signal processing that could be; utilized in all-optical packet switching. We demonstrate error-free 160 Gb/s optical wavelength conversion employing a single semiconductor optical amplifier. The gain recovery time of the semiconductor optical amplifier is greater than 90 ps. Assisted by an optical bandpass filter, an effective recovery time of 3 ps is achieved in the wavelength converter, which ensures 160 Gb/s operation. This optical wavelength converter can be controlled by a monolithically integrated optical flip-flop memory to route 80 Gb/s data-packets all-optically. The routing is realized without electronic control. The integrated optical flip-flop is based on two-coupled lasers, exhibits single-mode operation, has 35 dB contrast ratio between the states and switches state in about 2 ns. We demonstrate that the integrated flip-flop is able to control the optical wavelength converter up to 160 Gb/s. The system is capable of routing 80 Gb/s data packets with duration of 35 ns, separated by 15 ns of guard time.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate all-optical packet compression for a RZ payload up to 40 Gb/s and a label at 155 Mb/s, based on a recirculating buffer with one single optical crosspoint switch. The packet can be flexibly switched, dropped, time slot interchanged up to 9 time-slots and compressed up to 4 packets in one time slot. Back to back BER performance of the 4 times compressed packet is measured with only 1.8 dB of power penalty. By using variable fiber delay lines, this scheme can be further extended to the applications for variable length/time slot packet routing and compression.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate all-optical label-encoding format conversion from subcarrier-multiplexing to time-domain-multiplexing for 156.25 Mb/s labels and 10 Gb/s payload. The experiments show error-free operations with only 0.41 dB normalized power penalty for the payload.
