Abstract:The low-grazing-angle (high incidence angle) microwave back scattering from three-dimensional (3-D) surfaces approximating the crests of plunging-breaker water waves has been numerically found using the multilevel fast multipole algorithm. The test profiles were synthesized from a series of two-dimensional (2-D) profiles that represent the time evolution of a breaker. The results show that the strong cancellation of the vertically polarized backscattering (VV) midway through breaking that was previously identified with the 2-D profiles is maintained when the azimuthal variation of the 3-D wave is included. An optical-based model confirms that this is due to interference between back reflection from points on the forming jet and cavity of the wave. This is matched by constructive interference at horizontal polarization (HH), leading to HH-to-VV backscattering ratios that are much larger than unity. This effect remains when the azimuthal look angle is moved from directly upwave. When looking upwave, the interference disappears later in breaking when the fully formed jet shadows the cavity region. However, it returns when looking sufficiently away from directly upwave so that the cavity again becomes visible. The HH-to-VV ratios are typically greater than unity at this time, although HH cancellation can appear very late in the breaking when the round-trip distances to the jet and cavity specular points are sufficiently different.

Abstract:Bistatic acoustic scattering uses echo returns from a target to estimate the scattered intensity or amplitude as a function of angle and frequency (acoustic color) for target classification. In a shallow water waveguide, the echo return from a target at a distance, such as a mine, is modified by the waveguide and deviates significantly from that at close range or in free space. The channel effect or distortion on the echo return is studied using simulated data. A simple frequency domain signal processing method is proposed to equalize the channel effect. The frequency and angle distribution of the estimated scattering function is compared with that of the original function. It is found to be an adequate representation of the original function with a high correlation coefficient (∼0.88).

Abstract:The electromagnetic scattering of the synthesized three-dimensional (3-D) breaking wave crests which are formed by azimuthally aligning the individual 2-D breaking wave profiles has been numerically studied at the low-grazing angles (LGA) by using the multilevel fast multipole algorithm (MLFMA) with adaptive higher order hierarchical Legendre basis functions. Different from the specular (or quasi-specular) reflection and Bragg scattering, the "sea-spike" phenomenon which is characterized by that horizontally polarization (HH) signals greatly exceed vertically polarization (VV) signals has been demonstrated by analyzing both the backscattering of 3-D LONGTANK series and a plunging breaker. For the time-dependent evolution of the plunging breaker, the Doppler shifts and Doppler splitting effects are investigated by applying the fast Fourier transform (FFT) with a moving Hamming window. The spectrum of HH scattering has the feature of concentration, while the spectrum of VV scattering shows the Doppler splitting effects.

Abstract:Electromagnetic (EM) scattering of sea surface may exhibit sea-spikespikes when there exist breaking waves. As sea-spikes are usually mistaken for targets, the investigation of EM scattering characteristics and high-range resolution profiles (HRRPs) of three-dimensional (3D) sea surfaces with a plunging breaker is meaningful for target detection and recognition. To describe the basic features of a plunging breaker, this paper developed a feasible and wind-related plunging breaker model. Here, profiles of a plunging breaker in its life cycle are modeled according to the wind speed and time factor, and the small-scale roughness is considered. Then, the sea surface and plunging breaker are combined to obtain the composite model. Additionally, a hybrid algorithm based on the Capillary Wave Modification Facet Scattering Model (CWMFSM) and ray tracing technique is developed to calculate the EM scattering of 3D sea surface with a plunging breaker. Simulation results show that the sea-spike phenomenon is more likely to occur for the upwind and large incident angles. The amplitude of the backscattering electric field from the plunging breaker is much stronger than that of the sea surface. Furthermore, the HRRPs of 3D sea surface with a plunging breaker and target are computed. Sharp peaks from the plunging breaker that exhibit obvious target-like features are observed.

Abstract:Due to the great important role of wave breaking in microwave backscattering,it is necessary to consider the impact of wave breaking in the scattering model.In this paper,the validity and application scope of KHCC03 model including the impact of wave breaking were investigated.It is shown that the results of KHCC03 model are in a great agreement with the measured data when the incidence angle located in the range of 25°~40°.However,the model results are quite different from those of the measured data when the incidence angle is less than 25° or greater than 40°.To improve this inconsistency,an improved model of KHCC03 is proposed,and the results from the improved model are in a good agreement with those of the measured data.

Abstract:In this article, the small slope approximation in conjunction with the equivalent medium method is applied to analyze the acoustic scattering from a rough bubbly ocean surface, in which seawater with bubbles is regarded as a special medium, and the effect of subsurface bubbles is considered to have three main aspects: First, the attenuation effect, which is manifested as sound energy absorption, effective wave number correction, and sound speed reduction. Second, the modulation of incident and scattering angles of sound waves. Third, the volume scattering by bubbles. Also, it should be pointed out that different from previous papers, the rough sea surface is established, the acoustic scattering from each rough sea surface is simulated and an ensemble average is performed. By comparing with critical sea test results, it is found that the algorithm in this article can effectively predict the acoustic scattering from the sea surface with bubbles. The bistatic and monostatic acoustic scattering strength of the rough bubbly ocean surface under different conditions are calculated and discussed in detail. The results show that the peak of scattering strength appears in the direction of the specular scattering angle, and the farther away from the specular direction, the smaller the scattering strength. As the wind speed increases, the scattering strength first decreases and then stabilizes in the specular scattering direction, first increases and then stabilizes in the forward scattering direction, and continuously increases in the back-scattering direction.

Abstract:We develop an asymptotic theory of nonresonant backscattering of electromagnetic waves in the X-band by the ocean surface. Small-height (5÷20 cm) breaking surface waves with sharpened edges are assumed to be the main cause of nonresonant scattering. Using the methods of physical optics and geometrical theory of diffraction, we calculate the contribution of breaking sharpened waves to the scattering cross section for two orthogonal polarizations of electromagnetic scattering. It is shown that the main contribution to the backscattering is from the mirror reflection from the leading edge of such a wave, and the sharpness of the wave edge leads to the fact that the backscattering cross section of horizontally polarized radiation can exceed that of the vertically polarized radiation.

Abstract:The study analyzes the microwave imaging of shoaling nearshore surface gravity waves during the process of steepening and breaking over two beaches for a wide range of environmental conditions. Data are sourced from two coherent X-band radars, operating under low-grazing angle conditions. Using automatic wave tracking on the radar images, the evolution of individual waves is followed over hundreds of meters. The extracted backscatter intensity and Doppler speed form distinct patterns that reveal a nonnegligible dependence on environmental conditions. Statistical representations of the backscattered signal are presented by conditional Doppler speed–intensity histograms. These are composed of ensembles extracted at the radar-facing fronts. This technique helps to focus on the steepening of the wave and minimizes the impact of extremely low-grazing angle imaging mechanisms that are still not well understood. The combination of wind speed and direction, as well as initial wave steepness, local depth, and degree of nonlinearity, contributes to the shapes and centroid positions of the histograms. The backscatter signature exhibited by breaking waves remained consistent and similar throughout all datasets. The results are consistent across radars. Before consolidating the findings, it is imperative to conduct a further investigation of radar imaging of nonlinear wave dynamics in shallow water to eliminate any possible influence of imaging mechanisms.

Abstract:An efficient approach for fast analysis of vector wave scattering from random rough surtaces is described in this paper. Numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the merits of the scheme. The underlying methodology lies on using a single integral equation formulation combined with a multilevel sparse-matrix canonical-grid method. Triangular patches are employed to tightly model the surfaces. A localized approximation method is employed for the highly conductive seawater medium. A beam decomposition technique is incorporated to cope with an extremely large surface. Monte-Carlo simulation results are presented as bistatic scattering coefficients for wind-driven ocean surfaces illuminated by microwave beams at L-band. A special attention is paid to low grazing incidences due to its practical importance.

Abstract:The electromagnetic scattering of three-dimensional (3-D) plunging breaker wave crests at the low-grazing angles (LGA) has been numerically examined using the multilevel fast multipole algorithm(MLFMA) with adaptive higher order hierarchical Legendre basis functions. Based on the exact simulation, the plunging breaker is examined to demonstrate the “sea-spike” phenomenon which is characterized by horizontally polarization (HH) signals that exceed vertically polarization (VV) signals, especially at the grazing angles near 10°. It is strikingly different from the backscatter at moderate angles. For the evolution process of plunging waves which have a definitely measured time history corresponding to each profile, the time-dependent Doppler shifts of the backscatter is found by applying the fast Fourier transform (FFT). And its Doppler splitting and spectrum spreading have been demonstrated.

Abstract:Based on the Longuet-Higgins wave model theory, a modified phase modulation method of simulating freak waves is improved in this paper. The method can generate freak waves at assigned time and place, and their waveforms can not only maintain the frequency spectrum structure of the target spectrum and also satisfy the wave series statistics to a great extent. Then, the electromagnetic backscattering model of freak and background wave is established by the finite difference time domain method and the two-scale method. After averaging relative deviation and analyzing the error of the root mean square deviation within the measurement uncertainties, considering the computational efficiency, we use the two-scale model method to calculate the electromagnetic scattering coefficient of freak wave. Numerical results show that the normalized radar cross section (NRCS) of freak wave is much smaller than that of background wave. On the other hand, we analyze the electromagnetic scattering properties of freak waves under the different polarization modes, incident angles and incident frequencies. We find that in the condition of grazing incidence, the backscatter coefficient of freak wave increases with the increase of the incident frequency, but the increase amplitude is reduced, which meets the rough surface scattering theory. When the incident frequency is fixed and the incident angle is small, the backscatter coefficient calculation results of freak wave are similar under the condition of different polarizations VV's and HH's, but the backscatter coefficient of freak wave decreases obviously with the increase of incident angle, which is caused by the radar electromagnetic wave that is parallel to the sea surface and contacts it gradually. In addition, we find that the backscatter coefficient calculation result of freak waves under the VV polarization is much higher than under HH polarization from the two groups of experimental figures. According to the result of datum analysis, a conclusion is drawn that we can determine where the freak wave is when the NRCS difference of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image is smaller than -11.8 dB. In the practical engineering application, the characteristic parameters are difficult to observe, while the difference in electromagnetic scattering coefficient between freak wave and background wave can be calculated from the SAR image of sea surface. This conclusion provides a reference standard for predicting the freak waves in engineering application, through which we can calculate the characteristic parameters of freak wave, determine its position, and study the electromagnetic scattering characteristics under the different polarization modes, incident angles and incident frequencies in future researches.

Abstract:We present an asymptotic approach to solving the water wave scattering by undulating bottom topography in the presence of uniform currents where a flexible membrane covers the upper surface. The interest in this problem lies in the development of asymptotic solutions using the Fourier transform under the action of uniform currents. The method allows the physical processes involved in the sea-bed topography and membrane-covered surface and wave interactions to be studied. In particular, we identify the existence of Bragg resonance between gravity waves and the bottom ripples, which are associated with the reflection of incident wave energy. We consider the impacts of uniform current, and we highlight the central role of the asymptotic expansion method in the evolution of the response of current. For depth Froude number in the range of 0.4–0.7, the effects of bottom topography on Bragg resonance dominate. The current shifts the frequency of the most reflected wave components, and wave action conservation results in amplified reflected wave energies for the following currents. The theory developed in the frequency domain is illustrated in the time domain using discrete Fourier transform with the Joint North Sea Wave Observation Project (JONSWAP) spectrum [Hasselmann et al., J. Phys. Oceanogr. 10, 1264 (1980)] to analyze wave propagation through the whole system.

Abstract:At low grazing angles (LGA), sophisticated electromagnetic scattering of sea surfaces may give rise to complicated surface-current distribution. Therefore, for the multilevel fast multipole algorithm (MLFMA) with the Rao-Wilton-Glisson basis function, the sea scatterer must be meshed fine enough to ensure the precision of the scattering at LGA, which brings huge computational costs. The higher order hierarchical Legendre vector basis functions can bring a great reduction of the unknowns and sparsification of the impedance matrix. The MLFMA with higher order hierarchical Legendre basis functions is applied in the electromagnetic-scattering approach of 3-D breaking water wave crests at LGA for the first time. In addition, an adaptive-order technique is also introduced for the first time in describing the currents which can achieve accurate results and maximally reduce the computational costs from some case analysis. It has been investigated in analyzing the vertically (VV) and horizontally (HH) polarized scattering of profiles of the LONGTANK breaking waves. "Sea-spike" phenomenon has been demonstrated at LGA.

Abstract:A new procedure for analysis of scattering by a ship and its wake on ocean-like surface is presented. A smoothing transition technique is adopted to truncate the infinite surface. The scattered field is expressed as two parts: one part is a given field containing the contribution from the boundless flat surface, while the other part is the difference field due to the ship and the finite rough surface. Multilevel fast multiple algorithm (MLFMA) is incorporated to accelerate the computations. Validation of the proposed method has been provided by comparing with the small slope approximation (SSA) method.
Superscattering of water waves

Abstract:Inspired by the concept of superscattering in optics, we for the first time theoretically predict and experimentally demonstrate the superscattering phenomenon in water waves. The subwavelength superscatterer is constructed by multi-layered concentric cylinders with an inhomogeneous depth profile. The superscatterer breaks the long-held single-channel scattering limit by several times and thus significantly enhances the total scattering strength. The underlying mechanism originates from the near degeneracy of the resonances of multiple channels. We fabricate the superscatterer prototype and experimentally measure the near-field patterns, which are consistent with theoretical prediction and numerical simulation. Our study opens a new avenue to strengthen water-wave scattering and deepen the understanding in water waves, which can be useful for ocean energy harvesting and harbor protection.

Abstract:This paper deals with the azimuthal sea clutter, namely sea clutter from a series of different radar azimuths. The purpose is to demonstrate the fractal property of the azimuthal sea clutter. In detail, the random walk model of sea clutter is introduced, and then the criterion of judging the fractal property of sea clutter is presented. By analyzing the real azimuthal sea clutter data from X-band navigation radar, it is found that the fractal property of the azimuthal sea clutter is closely related to the grazing angle and the sea state. Low sea state (calm sea surface) and very low grazing angle will result in the non-fractal performance of the azimuthal sea clutter. (4 pages)

Abstract:Abstract The interaction between surface gravity waves and surface-piercing vertical multi-plate breakwaters in finite water depth is investigated under the assumption of potential flow theory. The time-domain desingularized boundary integral equation method (DBIEM) is adopted to solve the boundary value problem. A decomposition method based on the superposition principle is used to obtain reflected waves. The effect of the vertical plates as a floating breakwater by making full use of Bragg resonance is analyzed. Initially, the waveforms calculated without breakwaters are compared with second-order Stokes regular wave to obtain the appropriate desingularization distance. Then, the interaction of surface gravity waves with the breakwaters with the single plate, double, and triple plates are analyzed. The transmission and reflection coefficients of the breakwater with the single plate are verified with the analytical solutions of previous literature. The transmission and reflection coefficients of the breakwaters with double and triple plates are verified with experimental results. Finally, the transmission and reflection coefficients of surface-piercing vertical multi-plate breakwaters with different plate numbers and drafts are also calculated. The occurring condition of Bragg resonance and its values affected by the plate number and the draft are analyzed. The present results are reference values for the optimal design of vertical plates as a floating breakwater for offshore and coastal engineering applications by fully using Bragg resonance.

Abstract:A submerged flexible breakwater can be used to control waves in shallow water as an advanced alternative to traditional rigid submerged structures. Submerged flexible breakwaters not only cost less to build than conventional submerged breakwaters but also allow ships and marine life to bypass them if they are deep enough. These marine structures decrease the intensity of the shock wave and prevent standing waves from forming. We present a solution for transmission/reflection using a series of submerged identical elastic scatterers. Scattering and transfer matrices will be used to compute the transmission and reflection coefficients for N-submerged elastic scatterers. The behavior of the transmission for different values of physical parameters such as submergence depth, length of the scatterer, the gap between two successive scatterers, stiffness of the scatterer, and the number of submerged elastic scatterers is given. In doing so, we can achieve the frequencies and the incident amplitudes at which these submerged elastic scatterers can be effectively used as breakwaters in water of finite depth. We have looked at the transmission and reflection behaviors for a range of physical parameter values, such as the submergence depth, the length of the scatterer, the spacing between successive scatterers, the stiffness of the elastic scatterer, and the number of scatterers over a wide frequency range. We have given a spectrum of frequencies for which, given certain values of physical parameters, we can achieve zero transmission. Furthermore, even at high frequencies, we have demonstrated an incidence amplitude range for which zero propagation of transmission is feasible.

Abstract:In order to study bistatic scattering from the rough sea surface with presence of a ship target, especially at low grazing angle incidence, a hybrid approach of the generalized forward-backward method (GFBM) with spectral accelerate algorithm (SAA) with Monte Carlo method was developed. It was applied to numerical simulation of bistatic scattering from one-dimensional conducting sea surface with a ship presence under the TE and TM tapered wave incidence at low grazing angle (LGA). Numerical simulations of bistatic scattering at LGA show the functional dependence upon polarization, frequency, observation angle, sea surface wind speeds, ship location and other parameters.
