Abstract:High-performance single-photon detectors (SPDs) at 1550-nm band are critical for fiber-based quantum communications. Among many types of SPDs, the up-conversion SPDs based on periodically poled lithium niobate waveguides are of great interest. Combined with a strong pump laser, the telecom single-photons are converted into short wavelength ones and detected by silicon-based SPDs. However, due to the difficulty of precise controlling waveguide profile, the direct coupling between a single-mode fiber and the waveguide is not efficient. Here by utilizing fiber taper with proper diameter, optimal mode-matching is achieved and coupling efficiency up to 93% is measured. With an optimized design, a system detection efficiency of 36% and noise counting rate of 90 cps are realized. The maximum detection efficiency is characterized as 40% with a noise counting rate of 200 cps. Numerical simulation results indicate that our device can significantly improve the performance of QKD and extend the communication distance longer than 200 km.

Abstract:One of the most significant vulnerabilities in the source unit of quantum key distribution (QKD) is the correlation between quantum states after modulation, which shall be characterized and evaluated for its practical security performance. In this work, we propose a methodology to characterize the intensity correlation according to the single-photon detection results in the measurement unit without modifying the configuration of the QKD system. In contrast to the previous research that employs extra classical optical detector to measure the correlation, our method can directly analyse the detection data generated during the raw key exchange, enabling to characterize the feature of correlation in real-time system operation. The basic method is applied to a BB84 QKD system and the characterized correlation decreases the secure key rate shown by the security proof. Furthermore, the method is extended and applied to characterize the correlation from the result of Bell-state measurement, which demonstrates its applicability to a running full-scheme MDI QKD system. This study provides an approach for standard certification of a QKD system.

Breaking the Rate-Loss Relationship of Quantum Key Distribution with Asynchronous Two-Photon Interference

Abstract:Twin-field quantum key distribution can overcome the repeaterless bound via single-photon interference. However, the requirements of phase-locking and phase-tracking techniques drastically increase the experimental complexity, economic cost and prohibit free-space realization. Inspired by the duality in entanglement, we herein present an asynchronous measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution protocol that can surpass the repeaterless bound even without phase locking and phase tracking. Leveraging the concept of time multiplexing, asynchronous two-photon Bell-state measurement is realized by postmatching two interference detection events. For a 1 GHz system, the new protocol reaches a transmission distance of 450 km without phase tracking. After further removing phase locking, our protocol is still capable of breaking the bound at 270 km by employing a 10 GHz system. Intriguingly, when using the same experimental techniques, our protocol has a higher key rate than the phase-matching-type twin-field protocol. In the presence of imperfect intensity modulation, it also has a significant advantage in terms of the transmission distance over the sending-or-not-sending type twin-field protocol. With high key rates and accessible technology, our work paves the way for realistic global quantum networks across space, air, and water to the ground.

However, to compensate for the channel fluctuations and lock the laser fluctuations, the techniques of phase tracking and phase locking are indispensable in experiment, which drastically increase experimental complexity and hinder free-space realization. We herein present an asynchronous measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution protocol that can surpass the secret key capacity even without phase tracking and phase locking. Abstract:Quantum key distribution (QKD) networks can provide unconditional secure communications among many remote users. In real QKD networks, with the dynamic access and quit of nodes, qualities of various user links and the link lengths among different users, such as transmission loss, are different and changing. Customized optimization that aims at various channel environments offers a network performance benefit. In this paper, we propose including the detection efficiency, dark-count probability, and afterpulse rate of the single-photon avalanche photodiode (SPAD) into the parameter optimization by controlling its voltage and temperature to optimize the secure key rates in dynamic QKD networks. The result shows that our method improves the network adaptability to the variation and asymmetry of channel and profits the establishment of QKD networks in a complex channel environment. This method is suitable for arbitrary SPAD-based QKD system and network architecture.

Abstract:We develop new methods of quantifying the impact of photon detector imperfections on possible secret key rates in Time-Entanglement based Quantum Key Distribution (QKD). We address photon detection timing jitter, detector downtime, and dark photon counts and show how each may decrease the maximum achievable secret key rate differently. We begin with a standard Discrete Memoryless Channel (DMC) model to get a good bound on the mutual information lost due to the timing jitter, then introduce a novel Markov Chain (MC) based model to characterize the effect of detector downtime and show how it introduces memory to the key generation process. Finally, we propose a new method of including dark counts in the analysis that shows how dark counts can be especially detrimental when using the common Pulse Position Modulation (PPM) for key generation. Our results show that these three imperfections can significantly reduce the achievable secret key rate when using PPM for QKD. One of our main results is providing tooling for experimentalists to predict their systems' achievable secret key rate given the detector specifications.

Abstract:Quantum key distribution is one of the first quantum technologies ready for the market. Current quantum telecommunication systems usually utilize a service channel for synchronizing the transmitter (Alice) and the receiver (Bob). However, the possibility of removing this service channel and exploiting a clock recovery method is intriguing for future implementation, both in fiber and free-space links. In this paper, we investigate criteria to recover the clock in a quantum communication scenario, and experimentally demonstrated the possibility of using a quantum-based clock recovery system in a time-bin quantum key distribution protocol. The performance of the clock recovery technique, in terms of quantum bit error rate and secret key rate, is equivalent to using the service channel for clock sharing.

Abstract:To improve the performance of a quantum-key-distribution (QKD) system, high speed, low dark count single photon detectors (or low-noise homodyne detectors) are required. However, in practice, a fast detector is usually noisy. Here, we propose a dual-detector method to improve the performance of a practical QKD system with realistic detectors: the legitimate receiver randomly uses either a fast (but noisy) detector or a quiet (but slow) detector to measure the incoming quantum signals. The measurement results from the quiet detector can be used to bound the eavesdropper's information, while the measurement results from the fast detector are used to generate a secure key. We apply this idea to various QKD protocols. Simulation results demonstrate significant improvements of the secure key rate in the lower loss regime in both Bennett-Brassard 1984 (BB84) protocol with ideal single photon source and Gaussian-modulated coherent states protocol; while for decoy-state BB84 protocol with weak coherent source, the improvement is moderate. We also discuss various practical issues in implementing the dual-detector scheme.

Abstract:We demonstrate the flexibility that a wavelength selective switch could offer to bandwidth provisioning of potential multi-user quantum key distribution networks based on entangled pair sources. We derive an analytical expression relating the coincidence detection rates of the photon pairs to the switch bandwidth characteristics. Experimentally measured coincidence rates verify the theory in three distinct network configurations.

Abstract:For secure practical systems, quantum key distribution (QKD) must provide high key rates over long distances. Time-entanglement-based QKD promises to increase the secret key rate and distribution distances compared to other QKD implementations. This article describes the major steps in QKD protocols, focusing on the nascent QKD technology based on high-dimensional time-bin entangled photons. We overview state-of-the-art from the information and coding theory perspective. In particular, we discuss the key rate loss due to single-photon detector imperfections. We hope the open questions posed and discussed in this paper will inspire information and coding theorists to contribute to and impact fledgling quantum applications and influence future quantum communication systems.

Abstract:The afterpulse effect is an intrinsic characteristic of the single-photon avalanche photodiode that has been widely used in quantum key distribution (QKD). As QKD systems move into the gigahertz regime, the afterpulse effect is no longer ignorable, which will lead to a great deviation compared with the existing analytical model. Here we develop an analytical model to make QKD systems more afterpulse compatible. In addition, we obtain the secure key rate for our model with the analysis of statistical fluctuation using Hoeffding's inequality and Azuma's inequality. Our results show that the optimized parameters of the afterpulse-compatible model can provide a much higher key rate than the optimized parameters of the previous afterpulse-omitted model in the same situation.

Abstract:In the description of quantum key distribution systems, much attention is paid to the operation of quantum cryptography protocols. The main problem is the insufficient study of the synchronization process of quantum key distribution systems. This paper contains a general description of quantum cryptography principles. A two-line fiber-optic quantum key distribution system with phase coding of photon states in transceiver and coding station synchronization mode was examined. A quantum key distribution system was built on the basis of the scheme with automatic compensation of polarization mode distortions. Single-photon avalanche diodes were used as optical radiation detecting devices. It was estimated how the parameters used in quantum key distribution systems of optical detectors affect the detection of the time frame with attenuated optical pulse in synchronization mode with respect to its probabilistic and time-domain characteristics. A design method was given for the process that detects the time frame that includes an optical pulse during synchronization. This paper describes the main quantum communication channel attack methods by removing a portion of optical emission. This paper describes the developed synchronization algorithm that takes into account the time required to restore the photodetectors operation state after the photon has been registered during synchronization. Abstract:Quantum Key Distribution has made continuous progress over the last 20 years and is now commercially available. However, the secret key rates (SKR) are still limited to a few Mbps. Here, we present a custom multipixel superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors and fast acquisition and real-time key distillation electronics, removing two roadblocks and allowing an increase of the SKR of more than an order of magnitude. In combination with a simple 2.5 GHz clocked time-bin quantum key distribution system, we can generate secret keys at a rate of 64 Mbps over a distance of 10.0 km and at a rate of 3.0 Mbps over a distance of 102.4 km with real-time key distillation.

Abstract:We report a quantum key distribution system that is able to generate key at a record high key rate of 115.8 Mb/s over 10-km fibre. This attributes to a high-efficiency multi-pixel superconducting nanowire detector, a low-error integrated transmitter, and a fast post-processing algorithm.

Abstract:Photonic integration offers a practical solution for wider deployment of quantum secure communication. Based on carrier-depletion modulators (CDMs) in silicon photonics, we design and fabricate high-speed transmitter chips and demonstrate its capability to implement measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (MDI-QKD). In the proof-of-concept experiment, the quantum bit error rate (QBER) is as low as 0.85% in Z basis and 25.5% in X basis, respectively. With a double-scanning method, the optimized system shows a key rate per pulse of 1.65 × 10 −4 over an emulated attenuation of 10 dB (corresponding to 50-km standard fiber) with 80% single photon detection efficiency.

Abstract:Continuous variable quantum key distribution attracts increasing attention in recent years due to its potential high secret key rates and the compatibility with existing communication infrastructure. This letter derives the secret key rate for a binary modulated continuous variable quantum key distribution using an optimally displaced threshold detection and post-selection. To improve the secret key rate, we optimize the post selected area and the coherent amplitude for different transmission efficiency of the channel under different thermal noises. Both the individual and collective beamsplitter attacks are considered. Numerical results show that the secret key rate using the optimally displaced threshold detection can surpass that using the classical detection scheme under different transmission efficiencies and different thermal noises. Besides, more improvement on the secret key rate can be obtained when the transmission efficiency is low.

Abstract:In the past two decades, quantum key distribution networks based on telecom fibers have been implemented on metropolitan and intercity scales. One of the bottlenecks lies in the exponential decay of the key rate with respect to the transmission distance. Recently proposed schemes mainly focus on achieving longer distances by creating a long-arm single-photon interferometer over two communication parties. Despite their advantageous performance over long communication distances, the requirement of phase locking between two remote lasers is technically challenging. By adopting the recently proposed mode-pairing idea, we realize high-performance quantum key distribution without global phase locking. Using two independent off-the-shelf lasers, we show a quadratic key-rate improvement over the conventional measurement-device-independent schemes in the regime of metropolitan and intercity distances. For longer distances, we also boost the key rate performance by 3 orders of magnitude via 304 km commercial fiber and 407 km ultralow-loss fiber. We expect this ready-to-implement high-performance scheme to be widely used in future intercity quantum communication networks.

Abstract:Using InGaAs/InP avalanche photodiodes as sensors and coaxial cables as reflection lines to reject spike signals, we have firstly employed the "timing filtering" gates to pick out avalanche signals and have realized the single photon detection at 1550 nm in the temperature range of thermoelectric cooling. A ratio of the dark count rate to the detection efficiency was obtained to be 9 x 10(-5) at 223K. When the detector is applied to a practical quantum key distribution system, the transmission distance can reach 89.5 km and the repetition rate can reach 0.33 MHz.

Abstract:Three clock synchronization schemes for a quantum key distribution system are compared experimentally through the outdoor fibre and the interaction physical model of the the clock signal and the the quantum signal in the quantum key distribution system is analysed to propose a new synchronization scheme based on time division multiplexing and wavelength division multiplexing technology to reduce quantum bits error rates under some transmission rate conditions. The proposed synchronization scheme can not only completely eliminate noise photons from the bright background light of the the clock signal, but also suppress the fibre nonlinear crosstalk.
