Abstract:A linear theory and a more general dispersion relation of electromagnetic radiation from a magnetized plasma-filled backward wave oscillator with sinusoidally corrugated slow-wave structure driven by a solid intense relativistic electron beam have been given. The comparisons show good agreement with the previous works when B0 → ∞ and ωb=0 from this dispersion relation.

Abstract:The linear theory of electromagnetic radiation from a high-power backward-wave-oscillator (BWO), travelling-wave-tube (TWT) with plasma-filled, sinusoidally corrugate waveguide driven by an intense relativistic electron beam (IREB) has been derived and analysed numerically. A general dispersion relation is presented for analysing a plasma-filled corrugate waveguide immersed in magnetized plasma in this paper. It is shown that the linear theory developed here is in good agreement with the previous work.

Abstract:A linear theory of electromagnetic radiation from a backward wave oscillator (BWO) with coaxial slow wave structure driven by an annular intense relativistic electron beam has been derived and analyzed numerically. The absolute instability of the mode (quasi-TEM) which is peculiar in the coaxial SWS is studied. It is shown that the quasi-TEM mode can be the fundamental mode of oscillation in the coaxial BWO with sufficiently large linear growth rates for moderately relativistic beam case.

Abstract:The theoretical study on the electron beam-wave interactions in a plasma waveguide immersed in a finite magnetic field is given in the article, in which both the plasma and the electron beam are considered as special media. Making use of the constitutive transformation and the Lorentz transformation in the four-dimensional space, the permittivity tensor of the stationary magnetized plasma, the permittivity tensor, the permeability tensor, and the chiral tensor of the electron beam in the rest (laboratory) frame are acquired. Therefore, two coupled wave equations for the magnetized plasma and electron beam have been obtained and the dispersion relations are then achieved by solving these coupled equations together with the boundary conditions including the surface current density due to the ripple of the plasma/beam. As an example of the applications of this approach, the beam-wave interactions in a practical plasma Cherenkov maser have been studied and the numerical calculations have been carried out in detail. It has been found that the present approach is more accurate and can provide clearer mode information for the electron beam-wave interactions in a magnetized plasma waveguide. This approach can be exploited in a number of electron beam-wave interaction systems including some kinds of free electron devices, plasma filled Cherenkov radiated free electron lasers and masers. Abstract:By use of the self-consistent linear field theory, three-dimensional perturbation of electrons affected by the perturbed electromagnetic fields is discussed. And Cherenkov radiations excited by a thin annular relativistic electron beam in a unmagnetized-plasma-filled, dielectric lined slow-wave waveguide are analysed. The dispersion equation and the wave growth rate of the interaction of the electron beam to the waveguide modes with arbitrary azimuthal mode number are derived. It′s clearly shown that the Cherenkov radiation results from the coupling of the waveguide mode in the unmagnetized-plasma-filled, dielectric lined slow-wave waveguide to the beam mode via the electron beam. Finally, the effects of plasma density on the dispersion relation and the wave growth rate are calculated and discussed.

Abstract:A cold and uniform plasma-filled travelling wave tube with sinusoidally corrugated slow wave structure is driven by a finite thick annular intense relativistic electron beam with the entire system immersed in a strong longitudinal magnetic field. By means of the linear field theory, the dispersion relation for the relativistic travelling wave tube (RTWT) is derived. By numerical computation, the dispersion characteristics of the RTWT are analysed in different cases of various geometric parameters of the slow wave structure and plasma densities. Also the gain versus frequency for three different plasma densities and the peak gain of the tube versus plasma density are analysed. Some useful results are obtained on the basis of the discussion.

Abstract:Summary form only given. We have investigated the dispersion properties of some kinds of linear waves in uniform, cold quantum magnetoplasmas. Our analysis is based on the quantum magnetohydrodynamic equations. We derive new dispersion relations of the Langmuir wave and X wave by solving the plasma dielectric permeability tensor and find that the dispersion relations of the ordinary wave, the left-handed wave, and the right-handed wave show no quantum effect corrections. The results indicate that the quantum corrections have significant effects on the dispersion property of the Langmuir wave when the wave number k is big enough. The quantum effects also make the electrostatic oscillation into the Langmuir wave, which now has weak dispersion and whose group velocity increases with increasing frequency. The quantum corrections to the dispersion relation of the X wave have also been studied. Compared to the Langmuir wave, quantum effects have weaker corrections to the dispersion of the X wave and actually can be neglected in general conditions. For the Langmuir wave, our conclusion is that quantum effect corrections are significant when the electron quantum wavelength becomes comparable to the linear waves wavelengths. For simplicity, we consider only two types of wave vectors: the one that is parallel to the magnetic field and the one that is perpendicular to the magnetic field. Once the expression of the plasma dielectric permeability tensor is obtained, the dispersion relations of more complicated kinds of waves can be obtained with smaller efforts.

Abstract:The dispersion equation on a cylindrical waveguide having an annular plasma sheet is derived under the condition of limited magnetic field. The influence of different plasma density, thickness, and field intensity on the plasma frequency, especially the plasma thickness on depressive characteristics and interaction growth rate are discussed, and the conclusion is obtained that there is a perfect thickness to get the biggest interaction rate.

Abstract:Analytical theory of electromagnetic field in a helical slow wave structure filled with plasma immersed in a finite axial magnetic field is presented in this paper. By means of helix sheath model and the boundary conditions, the dispersion equation of a magnetized plasma loaded helical slow wave structure is derived. Three particular cases ( without plasma, without axial magnetic field and in infinite axial magnetic field) are discussed and the corresponding dispersion equations are deduced. It is found that the simplified results are in accordance with published references.

Abstract:Considering the effect of the longitudinal uniform magnetic field, the microwave radiation produced by the interaction of a relativistic electron beam with a plasma column is examined by use of the linear theory. It is shown that the E-mode and the H-mode produced by the interaction in the plasma column are coupled and undistinguished because of the effect of the longitudinal uniform magnetic field. The uncoupled condition of the E-mode with the H-mode and the dispersion equation of the E-mode are derived. And the calculations and discussions of the dispersion equation are presented.

Abstract:Building upon the theoretical foundations presented in Part I of this paper, the kinetic theory of electron-beam-wave interactions in a magnetized plasma-filled waveguide (MPW) is presented in this second part. This kinetic theory treatment is more generally applicable to cases of less-intense electron-beams (Montgomery and Tidman, 1964), The dispersion relations for longitudinal and transverse interactions, in both smooth and corrugated waveguides, are all derived by using kinetic theory to model the c-beam dynamics. This includes kinetic theory treatments of the plasma tilled electron cyclotron resonance maser (ECRM) and a combination of Cherenkov-Cyclotron resonance phenomena, It is important to note that in an MPW transverse interactions (e.g,, ECRM interactions) are always coupled with longitudinal interactions. Using the kinetic treatment is essential for studying the ECRM because its energy conversion mechanism is based on azimuthal phase hunching and finite Larmor radius effects, The dispersion relation that we derive shows that the presence of a plasma-fill tends to increase the growth rate of the waveguide mode ECRM instability.

Abstract:A helix type slow wave structure filled partially with plasma is immersed in a strong longitudinal magnetic field. By means of a sheath model and linear field theory, the dispersion relation of the slow wave structure is derived. The hybrid modes, which are formed at frequencies where the phase velocities of electromagnetic wave and electrostatic wave coincide, are found. The trend of change for the dispersion characteristic, interaction impedance and linear gain is analyzed in different plasma densities by numerical computation. Some useful results are obtained on the basis of the discussion.

Abstract:In a magnetized plasma waveguide, the TE mode and the TM mode are always coupled each other. This makes the electron beam-wave interactions much more complicated. Even though, theoretical and experimental studies have been carried on very actively during the past years. Paper presented a Basic Theoretical Formulations on the electron beam-wave interactions by means of the Applied field approximation, paper gave a linear theory based on the dielectric tensor for both the electron beam and the plasma, while in paper based on the Lorentz transformation and the Constitutive transformation in the Minkovsky space, a novel approach of the theory was worked out. An experimental study on a plasma filled Cherenkov radiation device has been carried out in [5]. A report of detailed comparison of the theories and the experiment is presented in this paper. The comparison shows that the novel theoretical approach gives correct and more accurate agreement with the results of the experiment.

Abstract:This paper presents detailed theoretical study on the theory of wave propagation along the coaxial waveguide filled with moving magnetized plasma (CWMMP). Making use of the Lorentz transformation and the constitutive transformation, Maxwell's equations lead to the coupled non-homogeneous differential equations which govern the wave propagation in CWMMP, and then analytical solutions have been obtained. The discussion about the eigenvalues of the waves and detailed studies on the fields are carried out. It finds that the fields of the CWMMP are composed of two parts with different eigenvalues. Numerical calculations show that because of Doppler shift effect, the eigenvalues of the modes in such a case is quite different from those of the CWMMP. And a detailed discussion on the dispersion characteristic of CWMMP is presented.

Abstract:We present a theory for nonlinear, multidimensional plasma waves with phase velocities near the speed of light. It is appropriate for describing plasma waves excited when all electrons are expelled out from a finite region by either the space charge of a short electron beam or the radiation pressure of a short intense laser. It works very well for the first bucket before phase mixing occurs. We separate the plasma response into a cavity or blowout region void of all electrons and a sheath of electrons just beyond the cavity. This simple model permits the derivation of a single equation for the boundary of the cavity. It works particularly well for narrow electron bunches and for short lasers with spot sizes matched to the radius of the cavity. It is also used to describe the structure of both the accelerating and focusing fields in the wake.

Abstract:A systematic formalism for investigating linear electromagnetic perturbations in general magnetic field configurations is developed. The formalism employs the small adiabaticity parameter rho /L0 and is valid for arbitrary frequencies. Here, rho and L0 are, respectively, the Larmor radius and equilibrium scale length. Effects associated with plasma and magnetic field inhomogeneities as well as finite Larmor radii are contained. The specific case of axisymmetric Tokamaks is then considered to illustrate the potential application.

Abstract:A free-electron laser pumped by electromagnetic wave (EM-FEL) is a type of laser that uses a high-power electromagnetic wave as a wiggler to generate short wavelength radiation. It has potential to produce higher frequency radiation with low energy electron beams than a free-electron laser with a magnetostatic wiggler. Y. Carmel et al. (1983) and G. G. Denisov et al. (1984), observed the EM-FEL radiation at millimeter wavebands with a relativistic backward-wave oscillator (RBWO) at 3 cm as the electromagnetic wiggler. Z. Liang (1995) reported the results of an electromagnetically pumped FEL with a separated FEL interaction region from the RBWO. A plasma-filled RBWO with a strong guiding magnetic field enhances the peak power over the vacuum case by a factor of up to 8, and the peak power of an EM-FEL with a frequency from 12 GHz to 26 GHz was measured in the experiment simultaneously. In this paper, we report the experimental and simulation results of an unmagnetized plasma-loaded BWO and free-electron laser.

Abstract:Excitation of slow electromagnetic waves for a configuration, in which a thin annular relativistic electron beam (TAREB) propagates through a cylindrical, dielectric-lined waveguide having a thin, annular plasma sheet at the same radial position as the TAREB, is studied in the presence of an infinite longitudinal guide magnetic field. Determinant dispersion equation is derived and directly numerically solved. The operation frequency and the growth rate of the waves are obtained and discussed.
