Abstract:Ever since the technique of the Kalman-Bucy filter was popularized, there has been an intense interest in finding new classes of finite dimensional recursive filters. The idea of using estimation algebras to construct finite dimensional nonlinear filters was first proposed in Brockett and Clark (1980), Brockett, and Mitter (1979). Tam, Wong and Yau (1990), and Yau have demonstrated that the concept of estimation algebra is an invaluable tool in the study of nonlinear filtering problems. In Chiou and Yau, the concept of an estimation algebra with maximal rank was introduced. Let n be the dimension of the state space. For n=1, it turns out that all nontrivial finite dimensional estimation algebras are with maximal rank. They were classified by the works of Tam-Wong-Yau (1990). For n=2, the authors have classified all finite dimensional estimation algebras with maximal rank. In this paper the authors construct explicitly finite dimensional filters with state space dimension 2 via the Wei-Norman (1964) approach by using the result of Chiou and Yau. From the Lie algebraic point of view, these are the most general finite dimensional filters.<>

Abstract:In this paper, we give a complete classification of all finite dimensional estimation algebras with state space dimension 2. It is shown that a finite-dimensional estimation algebra with state dimension 2 can only have dimension less than or equal to 6. We then use the Wei-Norman approach to construct all finite-dimensional nonlinear filters with state space dimension 2 from the Lie algebraic point of view.

Abstract:The idea of using estimation algebras to construct finite-dimensional nonlinear filters was first proposed by Brockett and Mitter independently. It turns out that the concept of estimation algebra plays a crucial role in the investigation of finite-dimensional nonlinear filters. In his talk at the International Congress of Mathematics in 1983, Brockett proposed a classification of all finite dimensional estimation algebras. Chiou and Yau classify all finite-dimensional estimation algebras of maximal rank with dimension of the state space less than or equal to two. In this paper we succeed in classifying all finite-dimensional estimation algebras of maximal rank with state–space dimension equal to three. Thus from the Lie algebraic point of view, we have now understood generically all finite dimensional filters with state–space dimension less than four.

Abstract:Ever since the Lie algebra method was introduced to construct finite dimensional nonlinear filters by Brockett and Mitter independently, there has been an intense interest in classifying all finite dimensional estimation algebras and finding new classes of finite dimensional recursive filters. The estimation algebra method has been proven to be an invaluable tool in the nonlinear filtering theory. This article considers the finite dimensional estimation algebras derived from a nonlinear filtering system with state dimension n, linear rank n-1, and constant Wong matrix. Related theories of the underdetermined partial differential equations and the Euler operator are applied to classify the estimation algebras. It is proved that the Mitter conjecture holds and the dimension of the finite dimensional estimation algebras must be 2n or 2n+1 with the abovementioned conditions. Therefore, we can construct the explicit solution of filtering systems by Wei-Norman approach. This result is of great significance because it is the first classification of nonmaximal rank finite dimensional estimation algebras with arbitrary state dimension.

Abstract:The problem of joint input and state estimation is addressed in this paper for linear discrete-time stochastic systems without direct feedthrough from unknown inputs to outputs. With the weighted least squares estimation for an extended state vector including unknown inputs and states, a recursive filter approach referred to as Kalman filter with unknown inputs without direct feedthrough (KF-UI-WDF) is derived. It is shown that the proposed KF-UI-WDF approach is uniquely optimal in sense of both least-squares (LS) and minimum-variances unbiased (MVU) over a category of MVU filters (e.g., [4], [5], [10]). The global optimality of the proposed KF-UI-WDF approach is also discussed. Due to the limited space, an illustrative example is omitted.

Abstract:Ever since the technique of Kalman-Bucy filter was popularized, due to its limitations of linear assumption and Gaussian initial condition in model, there has been an intense interest in finding new classes of finite dimensional recursive filters. The idea of using estimation algebra was first proposed to construct finite-dimensional nonlinear filters by Brockett and Mitter independently in the late seventies, and it has rapidly been proven to be an invaluable tool in the study of nonlinear filtering (NLF) problem. For all known finite dimensional estimation algebras (FDEAs), the Wong's matrix has to be constant. However, as shown in this paper, the Wong's matrix is a polynomial when we consider FDEAs with state dimension 4 and linear rank equal to 2. Several mild conditions are established for finding a special class of NLF system. Finally, we give the construction of finite dimensional filters for this class of NLF system by Wei-Norman approach.

Abstract:The authors present a new way to construct finite dimensional estimation algebra of nonmaximal rank. For a given finite dimensional estimation algebra E, one can construct a finite dimensional estimation algebra E' of nonmaximal rank which is isomorphic to E. The interesting fact is that even if E comes from a linear filtering system, there are arbitrary nonlinear filtering systems associated to E. Since every finite dimensional estimation algebra gives rise to a finite dimensional filter, we have constructed quite a large class of finite dimensional nonlinear filters

Abstract:Ever since the Kalman filter technique was popularized, there has been an abundance of interest in finding new classes of finite dimensional recursive filters. In this paper, by applying Wong's theorem [W. S. Wong, Systems Control Lett, 9 (1987), pp. 79-83], we construct a new class of finite dimensional filters with arbitrary state space dimension n and linear rank n - 2. Importantly, we show that in the new class of nonlinear filtering systems, the entries of Wong's Omega-matrix need not be constants or polynomials and can be C-infinity functions.

Abstract:The Kalman-Bucy filter is widely used in modern industry. Despite its usefulness, however, the Kalman-Bucy filter is not perfect. One of its weaknesses is that it needs a Gaussian assumption for the initial data. In this paper we present a Lie algebraic method to solve Duncan-Mortensen-Zakai equation for nonlinear filtering. This method requires only n sufficient statistics, and it allows the initial condition be modeled by an arbitrary distribution. On the other hand, the well-known Makowski method and Haussman-Pardoux method for linear filtering both require a number of sufficient statistics to be a polynomial of degree two in n. However, in the Lie algebraic method, one has to know explicitly the structure of the estimation algebra. In this paper we report the recent results on classification fo finite dimensional maximal rank estimation algebras with state space dimension up to 6.

Abstract:We consider the explicit solution of Duncan-Mortensen-Zakai (DMZ) equation for the finite-dimensional filtering system. We show that under certain conditions the nonlinear filtering system can be solved explicitly with an arbitrary initial condition by solving a system of ordinary differential equations and a Kolmogorov-type equation. Let n be the dimension of state space. We show that we need only n sufficient statistics in order to solve the DMZ equation.

It has been proven to be an invaluable tool in the study of nonlinear filtering problem. For all known finite dimensional estimation algebras, the Wong's Ω-matrix has been proven to be a constant matrix. However, the Wong's Ω-matrix is shown not necessary to be a constant matrix in this letter when we consider finite dimensional estimation algebras with state dimension 3 and rank equal to 1. Several easily satisfied conditions are established for an estimation algebra of a special class of filtering systems to be finite-dimensional. Finally, we give the construction of finite dimensional filters of non-maximal rank.

Abstract:The authors give an algebraic method to add uniton numbers for harmonic maps from a simply connected domain Omega subset of or equal to R-2 boolean OR {infinity} into the unitary group U(N) with finite uniton number. So, it is proved that any n-uniton can be obtained from a 0-uniton by purely algebraic operations and integral transforms to solve the partial derivative-problem via two different ways.

Abstract:The Lie algebraic method provides an important research direction for nonlinear filtering theory. By interpreting the Duncan-Mortensen-Zakai equation or its robust form as a partial differential equation with time varying parameters, one derives an approach to filtering that is based on Lie algebra as well as the theory of linear differential operators. The search and construction of the finite dimensional filter are turned into the study of the structure of the estimation algebra. That algebra provides a systematic tool to deal with questions concerning finite dimensional filters. It has led to a number of new results concerning finite dimensional filters . It explains why it is easy to find exact recursive filter for linear dynamical systems but very hard to handle the cubic sensor problem. Some new filters have been discovered. More importantly, the finite dimensionality of the estimation algebra guarantees the explicit construction of the finite dimensional recursive filter, and the filter so constructed is universal. However, as inherited difficulty from the nonlinear filtering, many questions are not satisfiedly answered and still open.

Abstract:This paper considers general finite dimensional estimation algebras associated with nonlinear filtering systems. Some structural results axe obtained. The properties of Euler operator and the solutions to an under-determined partial differential equation, which inevitably arise in an estimation algebra, are studied. These tools and techniques are applied to the study of finite dimensional estimation algebras with state dimension 2 to obtain a complete classification result. It is shown that a finite dimensional estimation algebra with state dimension 2 can only have dimension less than or equal to 6. Moreover, Mitter conjecture and Levine conjecture hold for finite dimensional estimation algebras with state dimension 2.

Abstract:Ever since the technique of the Kalman–Bucy filter was popularized, there has been an intense interest in finding new classes of finite-dimensional recursive filters. In the late 1970s the concept of the estimation algebra of a filtering system was introduced. Brockett, Clark, and Mitter proposed to use the Wei–Norman approach to solve the nonlinear filtering problem. In 1990, Tam, Wong, and Yau presented a rigorous proof of the Brocket–Mitter program which allows one to construct finite-dimensional recursive filters from finite–dimensional estimation algebras. Later Yau wrote down explicitly a system of ordinary differential equations and generalized Kolmogorov equation to which the robust Duncan–Mortenser– Zakai equation can be reduced. Thus there remains three fundamental problems in Brockett–Mitter program. The first is the problem of finding explicit solution to the generalized Kolmogorov equation. The second is the problem of finding real-time solution of a system of ODEs. The third is the Brockett's problem of classification of finite–dimensional estimation algebras. In this paper, we solve the first problem.

Abstract:Ever since the concept of estimation algebra was first introduced by Brockett and Mitter independently, it has been playing a crucial role in the investigation of finite-dimensional nonlinear filters. Researchers have classified all finite-dimensional estimation algebras of maximal rank with state space less than or equal to three. In this paper we study the structure of quadratic forms in a finite-dimensional estimation algebra. In particular, we prove that if the estimation algebra is finite dimensional and of maximal rank, then the Ω=(∂f j /∂x i −∂f i /∂x j )matrix, wheref denotes the drift term, is a linear matrix in the sense that all the entries in Ω are degree one polynomials. This theorem plays a fundamental role in the classification of finite-dimensional estimation algebra of maximal rank.
