Abstract:This article demonstrates the possibility of designing pattern reconfigurable quasi-Yagi antenna without compromising antenna's realized gain or operating frequency band. By controlling the length of dipole driven arms and the transition delay line, the E-plane beam direction of designed antennas are steered from -20 degrees to +20 degrees, in 10 degrees steps. In this communication, five separate 60 GHz antennas with different radiation directions are simulated, fabricated and measured. The experimental results match well the predicted ones and demonstrate that the radiation beam direction of quasi-Yagi antenna can be freely shifted. (c) 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:This paper proposes the design of a novel beam reconfigurable antenna operating at 500GHz. Such antenna is based on single-layer-graphene patches with tunable electrical conductivity. Three groups of graphene patches play a key role for achieving directivity such as for the Yagi-Uda antenna. The conductivity of each graphene patch can be dynamically controlled by the DC biasing voltage. Numerical results show that the radiation beam of the antenna can vary in a range of ±50°, its input impedance bandwidth is about 8% with the peak gain of 7.5dB obtained.

Abstract:Reactive-load switching is proposed to achieve a reconfigurable unidirectional pattern for a planar center-loaded linear Yagi dipole array. Two crossed arrays of dipoles are printed oil both sides of a substrate in order to implement a scanning pattern in the whole horizontal plane. and each group consists of one active dipole and a couple of reactive-load parasitic dipoles. Due to the capacity of loaded value optimization, this antenna has good front-to-back ratio in its gain pattern; moreover, it has a compact structure and is suitable for integration with mobile terminals. Abstract:The paper demonstrates the possibility of designing pattern reconfigurable quasi-Yagi antenna. Adjusting the length of dipole arms and delay line, the E-plane radiation direction is steered from -20° to +20°, in 5° steps, without compromising the realized radiation gain or shifting the operating spectrum as high as 60 GHz band. In this work, nine individual Yagi antennas with different beam directions are designed. They all have bands centered at 60 GHz, with wide bandwidths covered from 55 GHz to 65 GHz.

Abstract:A novel vertical patch antenna (VPA) for pattern reconfiguration is proposed. It consists of a VPA and a monopole antenna, which can operate independently. Simulation and experimental results show that the radiation patterns can be easily steered between omnidirectional pattern of 18% bandwidths and bidirectional pattern of 17.8% bandwidths. The whole radiation pattern can cover a beam range of 0 similar to 90 degrees in elevation angle with the gain greater than 0dB.

Abstract:A novel omnidirectional, horizontally polarized antenna with the pattern reconfigurability is presented for modern ceiling routers. Horizontally polarized omnidirectional radiation is achieved using a rotational dipole array. A reflector is placed below the dipole array to reduce back radiation. A reconfigurable parasitic structure is designed, allowing the antenna to switch omnidirectional beams with varied elevation angles. Additionally, a tunable matching network allows for impedance matching across different states. Measurements indicate the overlapped −10dB impedance bandwidth across different states is 100 MHz (2.53-2.63GHz). The high and low-elevation patterns yield gains of 5.7 dBi and 7.2 dBi, with variations less than 2.5 and 1.6 dBi in the θ section, respectively.

Abstract:Diffractive antennas implement steerable beams based on reconfigurable diffractive devices such as Fresnel zone plates (FZPs). Compared with phased array systems, FZP antennas have concise architectures and simple beam-steering mechanisms. In this Letter, the authors demonstrate an FZP-based reconfigurable diffractive antenna with three degrees of freedom (3DoF), i.e. simultaneous reconfigurable steering angle, beamwidth and operating frequency. Such a highly reconfigurable antenna is implemented based on a single-layer metasurface mounted with microwave varactors. The principle behind this 3DoF reconfiguration is the electrically induced transparency and opacity switched by different sets of binary voltages applied across the varactors. Experimental measurements validated the proposed approach.

Abstract:In this letter, a 3-D pattern reconfigurable antenna array with multi-polarization is presented. It comprises four vertically placed reconfigurable end-fire dipole-pair elements and a compact four-path switchable feed network. By utilizing switchable operating dipoles of each element and appropriate pathways on the feed network, the antenna can achieve adaptive control of broadside patterns and backfire patterns with independent left-handed/right-handed circular polarization (LHCP/RHCP) and ±45° linear polarization (LP) in the elevation plane. Moreover, four end-fire patterns with vertical polarization (VP) can be adaptively controlled in the azimuth plane. The proposed antenna is fabricated and measured. With a compact 3-D structure of $0.49lambda_0 imes 0.49lambda_0 imes 0.39lambda_0$ , the measured -10 dB overlapped impedance band for the twelve operating states is 2.3 GHz-2.75 GHz (17.8%). Besides, the corresponding crosspolarization discrimination (XPD) is more than 17.4 dB.

Abstract:To implement frequency and polarization hybrid reconfiguration, a 4 x 4 array has been investigated. The radiation elements of the antenna array consist of cylindrical dielectric resonators, Wilkinson power divider, PIN diode, and dielectric substrate. The PIN diode controls the states of each branch in the Wilkinson power divider to achieve frequency and polarization reconfigurability. To verify the feasibility of the design, a fabricated sample of the proposed antenna array has been measured. The results demonstrate that the antenna array can be switched freely between its operating frequencies and polarizations. It operates within a bandwidth of 1.93 to 4.6 GHz for frequency reconfiguration, and three common polarization states-linear polarization, left-handed circular polarization, and right-handed circular polarization-can be continuously tuned from 2.96 to 3.39 GHz.
MEMS-loaded Millimeter Wave Frequency Reconfigurable Quasi-Yagi Dipole Antenna

Abstract:A new millimeter-wave frequency reconfigurable quasi-Yagi antenna is presented. The quasi-Yagi antenna is printed on a quartz substrate integrated with RF MEMS switches. It consists of one driven dipole, two dipole directors, and one truncated ground plane as reflector. By controlling the actuation of the RF MEMS loaded on the driven and director dipole elements, the antenna operation frequency is switchable in the millimeter wave wireless personal area network (WPAN) band (57-66 GHz) and E-band (71-86 GHz). The end-fire pattern of the Yagi-antenna is maintained in both two-bands. Theoretical results show that the antenna gain varies from 5.5 to 6.7 dBi in the lower band and from 6.5 dBi to 8.1 dBi in the higher band respectively. A high resistive biasing line configuration is presented and its effect on the antenna reflection coefficient is investigated.

Abstract:In this letter, a planar antenna withreconfigurable radiation pattern is investigated for smart Wi-Fi systems. The design incorporates one pair of folded dipoles, a microstrip-to-via feeding balun and two reconfigurable parasitic strips which are near-field excited by the dipole pair. By controlling the states of two Pin diodes embedded in two reconfigurable printed lines, the proposed antenna can switch between one omnidirectional mode and two unidirectional endfire radiation modes. This optimized antenna exhibits a decent size of 0.5 0 0.38 0 0.004 0 (where 0 is free space wavelength at 2.45 GHz). Good agreement is observed between the simulated and measured results. The overlapped impedance bandwidth with S11 < 10 dB for the three pattern modes is from 2.34 to 2.6 GHz in the measurement. Throughout the overlapping bandwidth, the front-to-back ratios are higher than 15 dB for the two unidirectional radiation modes and out-of-roundness is less than 1.2 dB for omnidirectional radiation mode. The measured peak realized gain of the proposed pattern-reconfigurable antenna is 6 dBi. This proposed Wi-Fi antenna is well poised for intelligent Wi-Fi communication systems.

Abstract:The integration and use of switches in microstrip patch reconfigurable antennas is investigated to get pattern forming. We also propose a reflector shaping method by connecting switches between patch elements, owing to its discrete structure. Experimental results demonstrate that it is effective. Furthermore, since the structure can be regarded as a quasi-Yagi array, the maximum gain occurs at the end-fire.

Abstract:A novel design for radiation pattern-reconfigurable antenna is described in this letter. The design is based on a wideband Vivaldi antenna structure. Two different radiation patterns are achieved by switching the feeding paths to obtain two antennas operation modes, monopole mode and Vivaldi mode. The reconfigurable antenna can adjust the radiation patterns by controlling the bias voltage of pin diodes. Therefore, by combining the two radiation patterns, a broad coverage of reconfigurable pattern is generated. In addition, the pattern reconfigurable antenna can operate at a wide frequency band from 2.7 to 12 GHz. Details of the simulated and experimented results for the pattern-reconfigurable antenna are shown.

Abstract:In this letter, a wideband polarization reconfigurable antenna array is proposed. Unlike traditional array, the proposed one is composed of four Vivaldi elements connected in end-to-end form, supported by a hollow cylindrical substate manufactured by 3D printing. For the determination of the optimal distribution of excitation (ODE) for different polarization state, the method of maximum power transmission efficiency (MMPTE) is used, thereby making the array be able to switch among left handed circular polarization (LHCP), right handed circular polarization (RHCP) and linear polarization (LP) along any azimuthal angle. The final optimized array size is π × 47² × 36mm3 (π × 0.602 × 0.46 λ03 = 0.521 λ03, where λ0 is the wavelength in free space at 3.8GHz). The simulation and measurement results show that the impedance bandwidth is from 2.5 to 5.0 GHz (66.6%, active |S11| < -10 dB) for all polarization states, and the maximum realized gain is always greater than 8.2 dBi/dBic. In addition, the axial ratio bandwidth (AR ≤ 3dB) can cover the entire impedance bandwidth, and stable gain can also be maintained within the working band. More importantly, for application with different gain and size requirement, the number of antenna elements can be changed easily to achieve similar wideband performance and polarization re-configurability with stable in-band gain.

Abstract:Combining the advantages of the phase tunability provided by active frequency selective surfaces (FSSs) and the beam-steering scheme used in conventional 1-D Fresnel-zone-plate (FZP) antennas, we report in this communication a 2-D beam-steering FZP antenna that needs only 180° phase tunability. Compared with transmit arrays, while the substrate layers are reduced by a half, a phase compensation strategy is used to enhance antenna specifications. To verify the proposed approach, a radome implemented based on an active, reconfigurable FSS was designed, simulated, and experimentally implemented. With a simple three-layer structure, the implemented FZP antenna works within an ultrawide bandwidth ranging from 5 to 6.3 GHz, corresponding to a 21% relative bandwidth. With a gain up to 19.3 dBi, the scanning range reaches ±45° in both horizontal and vertical planes. This cost-effective, simple-structured antenna can be potentially used in diverse RF and microwave applications.

Abstract:This paper presented a three-dimensional (3D) reconfigurable antenna operating in the V-band (40-75 GHz) for the first time. Based on co-design of mechanics and electromagnetics, a dipole antenna of polymer-metal-polymer microstructure was fabricated using Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) techniques, enabling reconfigurability through the repeated stretching and releasing of a bonded elastomer substrate. The center frequency (f c ) of the antenna was switched from 47.0 GHz in the 2D state to 56.6 GHz in the 3D state with an increased bandwidth from 7.2 GHz (43.2-50.4 GHz) to 13.9 GHz (47.4-61.3 GHz). The properties of this 3D reconfigurable antenna, particularly its large bandwidth, made it a promising component for V-band multifunctional, high-resolution radio frequency (RF) microsystems. These systems had potential applications in body sensing and portable health monitoring.
A Compact Reconfigurable Antenna With Pattern Diversity

Abstract:A compact pattern reconfigurable antenna is proposed, in which the beam pattern can be switched between a monopole like radiation and a broadside radiation. Two layers and three PIN diodes are employed in the antenna. A single coaxial feed is utilized to excite both monopole mode and PIFA mode at a center frequency of 2.62 GHz. The total efficiencies of the antenna are 72% and 95% for monopole and PIFA modes, respectively. The envelope correlation coefficient calculated from the two patterns is 0.28, indicating good diversity performance of the antenna in wireless communications.

Abstract:A low-profile, dual-polarized pattern reconfigurable antenna with the unique ability to independently control beam direction in both polarizations is presented. The design for each polarization incorporates two shorted patch antennas, capable of achieving varied main beam directions through feeding phase reconfiguration. A coupled shorting structure, parasitic strips, and a cross-shaped slot etched on the ground are employed to realize high port isolation. With the high port isolation, two reconfigurable feeding networks are integrated for independent beam control in both polarizations. The fabricated prototype shows an overlapped −10 dB impedance bandwidth spanning 180 MHz (3.68–3.86 GHz), and the isolation between the two polarizations exceeds 25 dB. The measured patterns confirm that the tilted beams demonstrate an improvement of over 3.2 dB in the main lobe direction and a reduction of over 4 dB in the side lobe direction compared to the broadside beam. Given the capability of independent beam control, the proposed antenna stands out as a promising candidate for 5G microcell indoor communications.
