Abstract:AbstractElectro-optic (E-O) polymers have drawn great interest in recent years because of their potential applications in photonics devices such as high speed modulators and switches, optical data storage and information processing1–2. In order to have suitable materials for device fabrication, it is essential to design and develop polymeric material systems (active and passive polymers) with matched refractive indices, large E-O coefficients, good temporal and photochemical stability3–8 The E-O response of an active polymer commonly arises from the electric field induced alignment of its second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophore, either doped as a guest/host system or covalently bonded as a side-chain. Because of the strong interaction among the electric dipoles, the poled structure is in a meta-stable state; the poled NLO chromophores which possess large dipole moment will tend to relax back to the randomly oriented state. As a result, the stability of the poled structure strongly depends on the rigidity of the overall material system. As it might be expected, the continuous increases of the rigidity and Tg of poled polymers imposes constraints on the selection of suitable chromophores that can survive the hightemperature poling and processing conditions. To circumvent this problem, we have developed a series of chromophores that possess conformation-locked geometry and perfluoro-dicyanovinylsubstituted electron-accepting group which demonstrate both good thermal stabilty and nonlinearity. This paper provides a brief review of these highly efficient and thermally stable chromophores and polymers for device applications.
Hyperfine Interaction in Spin Response of Organic Devices

Abstract:Recent advances in spin response of organic semiconductors include long polaron spin coherence time measured by optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR); substantive room-temperature magneto-electroluminescence and magneto-conductance obtained in organic light emitting diodes (OLED); and spin-polarized carrier injection from ferromagnetic electrodes in organic spin valves (OSV). Although the hyperfine interaction (HFI) has been foreseen to play an important role in organic spin response, clear experimental evidence has been lacking. Using the chemical versatility advantage of the organics, we studied and compared spin responses in films, OLED and OSV devices based on pi-conjugated polymers made of protonated, H-, and deuterated, D-hydrogen having a weaker HFI strength. We demonstrate that the HFI plays a crucial role in all three spin responses. OLEDs and films based on the D-polymers show substantial narrower magneto-electroluminescence, magneto-conductivity and ODMR responses; whereas due to the longer spin diffusion, OSV devices based on D-polymers show substantially larger magnetoresistance that reaches similar to 330% at small bias voltage and low temperatures.

Abstract:A photo-crosslinked side-chain second-order nonlinear optical polymer was synthesized with bis-phenol-A as the polymer backbone, p-nitroaniline as the chromophore and cinnamyl group as the photo-sensitizer. The characterization of the polymer was made by nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared, ultraviolet-vis, and dynamic mechanical analysis methods. An electro-optic film was obtained by spin coating of the polymer and corona poling then photo-crosslinking reaction. An external electro-optic measurement system was established based on the film and reflective light path configuration, and successfully applied to measure the electrical signals propagating on the under-test circuits. The poled and crosslinked film showed high glass transition temperature (160°C) and improved chromophore orientation stability. The measuring principle was analyzed by electro-optic tensor matrix and index ellipsoid methods. The results showed that the designed polymer film had the linear electro-optic effect, the voltage sensitivity of the system was measured to be 5 mv/ at the condition of 1 kHz input signal. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Abstract:Abstract Tailored nanostructures provide at-will control over the properties of light, with applications in imaging and spectroscopy. Active photonics can further open new avenues in remote monitoring, virtual or augmented reality and time-resolved sensing. Nanomaterials with χ (2) nonlinearities achieve highest switching speeds. Current demonstrations typically require a trade-off: they either rely on traditional χ (2) materials, which have low non-linearities, or on application-specific quantum well heterostructures that exhibit a high χ (2) in a narrow band. Here, we show that a thin film of organic electro-optic molecules JRD1 in polymethylmethacrylate combines desired merits for active free-space optics: broadband record-high nonlinearity (10-100 times higher than traditional materials at wavelengths 1100-1600 nm), a custom-tailored nonlinear tensor at the nanoscale, and engineered optical and electronic responses. We demonstrate a tuning of optical resonances by Δ λ = 11 nm at DC voltages and a modulation of the transmitted intensity up to 40%, at speeds up to 50 MHz. We realize 2 × 2 single- and 1 × 5 multi-color spatial light modulators. We demonstrate their potential for imaging and remote sensing. The compatibility with compact laser diodes, the achieved millimeter size and the low power consumption are further key features for laser ranging or reconfigurable optics.

Photorefractive Properties of an Organic Salt

Abstract:Inorganic photorefractive materials are widely used for applications in the visible spectral range. The lack of sensitive photorefractive materials at telecommunication wavelengths (λ=800- l500nm) where low cost semi-conductor laser diodes are commercially available opens a new field of interest. Due to the shift of the absorption cut-off towards longer wavelengths with increasing nonlinearities, the newest organic materials fulfill the sensitivity requirements at near infrared wavelengths. Among the organic crystals, 4-N,N-dimethylamino-4'-N'-methyl-stilbazolium tosylate (DAST) is a promising candidate to investigate the photorefractive properties of organic materials. Combining very large nonlinearities (r111 of 92 pm/V at λ=720nm) with an absorption cut-off at around 700nm along the dielectric axis x1, DAST shows promising results in the standard two-beam coupling experiments. Using the light interference pattern of two incoming coherent laser beams (ratio of pump to signal beam > 100), an index grating could be generated at a wavelength of λ =720nm. Due to the 90° phase shift of this index grating with respect of the light intensity pattern, an asymmetric energy exchange could be observed and qualitatively analyzed (Fig. 1). Using polished b-plates with dimensions up to axbxc= 12x1x4 mm3, a gain of up to 1.4cm-1, corresponding to a net gain of (Ί−α)≥0.2cm_l, was measured for light polarized along the dielectric axis x1 at a pump intensity of 85mW/cm2. Writing times of the order of one second have been measured. These first results point out the promising properties of the organic salt DAST for photorefractive applications at near infrared wavelengths. Further experiments of the dependence of the photorefractive gain on the applied electric field, the wavelength, and the grating period will also be reported.

Abstract:The preparation of high-performance electro-optical materials is one of the key factors determining the application of optoelectronic communication technology such as 5G communication, radar detection, terahertz, and electro-optic modulators. Organic electro-optic materials have the advantage of a high electro-optic coefficient (~1000 pm/V) and could allow the utilization of photonic devices for the chip-scale integration of electronics and photonics, as compared to inorganic electro-optic materials. However, the application of organic nonlinear optical materials to commercial electro-optic modulators and other fields is also facing technical bottlenecks. Obtaining an organic electro-optic chromophore with a large electro-optic coefficient (r33 value), thermal stability, and long-term stability is still a difficulty in the industry. This brief review summarizes recent great progress and the strategies to obtain high-performance OEO materials with a high electro-optic coefficient and/or strong long-term stability. The configuration of D-π-A structure, the types of materials, and the effects of molecular engineering on the electro-optical coefficient and glass transition temperature of chromophores were summarized in detail. The difficulties and future development trends in the practical application of organic electro-optic materials was also discussed.
High-frequency Response and Acoustic Phonon Contribution of the Linear Electro-Optic Effect in DAST.

Abstract:We present a simple method to measure the contribution from acoustic phonons to the linear electro-optic effect. A step voltage with a short rise time (600 ps) is applied to the sample, and the electro-optic response is measured in the time domain. For the organic salt 4-N, N-dimethylamino-4(?)-N(?)-methyl-stilbazolium tosylate (DAST), we obtained a negative contribution of r(a)(111) = -1.0 +/- 0.1 pm/V to the overall electro-optic coefficient of r(111) = 48 +/- 5 pm/V (lambda = 1535 nm). The electro-optic response was limited only by the rise time of the applied voltage, which corresponds to a frequency of 1 GHz.

Abstract:Abstract Light-field driven charge motion links semiconductor technology to electric fields with attosecond temporal control. Motivated by ultimate-speed electron-based signal processing, strong-field excitation has been identified viable for the ultrafast manipulation of a solid’s electronic properties but found to evoke perplexing post-excitation dynamics. Here, we report on single-photon-populating the conduction band of a wide-gap dielectric within approximately one femtosecond. We control the subsequent Bloch wavepacket motion with the electric field of visible light. The resulting current allows sampling optical fields and tracking charge motion driven by optical signals. Our approach utilizes a large fraction of the conduction-band bandwidth to maximize operating speed. We identify population transfer to adjacent bands and the associated group velocity inversion as the mechanism ultimately limiting how fast electric currents can be controlled in solids. Our results imply a fundamental limit for classical signal processing and suggest the feasibility of solid-state optoelectronics up to 1 PHz frequency.

A Thermally Stable Crosslinked Polymer Network with Large Electrooptic Coefficient

Abstract:Organic second-order nonlinear optical materials have been intensely pursued for the past two decades. Remarkable progress has been made in the design and synthesis of chromophores with exceptionally high-/spl mu//spl beta/ values. The superior nonlinearity, along with the inherent ultrafast response and large laser damage threshold, suggests that organic NLO materials are ideal for electro-optic and telecommunication applications. Here, we wish to report our preliminary progress in developing a crosslinked (XL) polymeric material containing a high-/spl mu//spl beta/ chromophore DHPT. At present, the largest electro-optic coefficient obtained from the polymer (20% loading by weight) is 27.5 pm/V (at 1.06 /spl mu/m).
Organic metallic epsilon-near-zero materials with large ultrafast optical nonlinearity

Abstract:Epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) materials have shown significant potential for nonlinear optical applications due to their ultrafast hot carriers and consequent optical nonlinearity enhancement. Modified poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) films show metallic characteristics and a resultant ENZ wavelength near 1550nm through polar solvent treatment and annealing. The metallic PEDOT film exhibits an intrinsic optical nonlinear response that is comparable to gold and 100-fold higher than typical inorganic semiconductor ENZ materials due to {\pi}-conjugated delocalized electrons. Hot carriers generate a 22-fold increase in the optical nonlinearity coefficient of metallic PEDOT films at 1550 nm. Hot holes in metallic PEDOT films have a smaller enhancement multiple of carrier temperature and a longer relaxation time than hot electrons in inorganic ENZ materials due to the larger imaginary permittivity and hot-phonon bottleneck for carrier cooling. Our findings suggest that {\pi}-conjugated ENZ polymer may have unique ultrafast and nonlinear optical properties compared to inorganic ENZ materials, enabling new possibilities in on-chip nanophotonic devices, nonlinear optics, and plasmonics.

Abstract:ABSTRACT We use a frequency-dependent electro-optic technique to measure the hole mobility in small molecule organic semiconductors, such as 6,13 bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl)-pentacene. Measurements are made on semiconductor films in bottom gate, bottom contact field-effect transistors (FETs.) Because of the buried metal layer effect the maximum response, due to absorption in the charge layer, will be for a dielectric film ∼ 1/4 of a wavelength (in the dielectric) (e.g. ∼ 1 micron thick in the infrared.) Results are presented for FETs prepared with both spin-cast polymer and alumina dielectrics prepared by atomic layer deposition. At low frequencies the results are fit to solutions to a non-linear differential equation describing the spatial dependence of flowing charge in the FET channel, which allows us to study multiple crystals forming across one set of drain-source contacts. FETs prepared on alumina dielectrics show interesting deviations from the model at high frequencies, possibly due to increased contact impedance.

Abstract:The nonlinear optical properties of an azobenzene-containing ionic liquid crystalline polymer were investigated using single-beam Z-scan and optical Kerr effect (OKE). The polymer film exhibited large nonlinear absorption (similar to 10(-6) cm W-1) and nonlinear refraction (similar to 10(-11) cm(2) W-1) under 532 nm ps excitation. The femtosecond time-resolved OKE results suggested that the nonlinear optical response time in off-resonant region was as fast as 300 fs. Moreover, stable molecular reorientation and a large photoinduced birefringence (similar to 10(-1)) were achieved in the polymer film with a 405 nm continous wave (CW) laser as pump light. The large optical nonlinearity, ultrafast response, and effective photoinduced molecular reorientation of the polymer films indicated their potential applications in nonlinear photonic devices and optical storage. Abstract:We show that the organic salt 4-N,N-dimethylamino-4′-N′-methyl-stilbazolium tosylate (DAST) is a very interesting material for electro-optic applications in the near infrared. The electro-optic coefficients, namely r111, r221, r331, r113, r223, and r333, were determined in the spectral range of 700 up to 1535 nm using optical samples cut from large high quality bulk crystals. DAST combines large electro-optic coefficients, e.g., r111=77±8 pm/V at λ=800 nm and r111=47±8 pm/V at λ=1535 nm, with low dielectric constants, e.g., ε1=5.2±0.4. This combination leads to large polarization-optical coefficients.
Ultra-fast re-structuring the electronic landscape of transparent dielectrics: new material states (Die-Met)

Abstract:The swift excitation of the transparent dielectrics by intense short laser pulse produces ultra-fast re-structuring of the electronic landscape generating a wealth of material states continuously changing in space and in time in accord with the variations of the intensity. These unconventional transient material states combine simultaneously dielectric and metal properties (Die-Met). The laser excitation transforms a transparent dielectric into electrically inhomogeneous state early in the pulse time [1]. The permittivity of excited material varies in time and in space changing from positive to negative values that strongly affects the interaction process. The interplay between the transient permittivity gradient and polarisation of the incident laser becomes the major process of the new interaction mode. In a particular relation between the polarization and the permittivity gradient the incident field amplitude grows up while the wave is approaching to the surface where the real part of permittivity turns to zero. That results in the local increase in the absorbed energy density. The complex 3D structure of the permittivity makes a transparent part of excited dielectric (at ${\epsilon}0 > {\epsilon}re > 0$) optically active. The electro-magnetic wave passing through such a medium gets a twisted trajectory and accrues the geometric phase [2]. The plane of polarisation rotation and phase depends on the 3D permittivity structure [3]. Measuring the polarisation and phase of the probe beam allows quantitatively identify this new transient state. We discuss the revelations of this effect in different experimental situations and possible applications.

Abstract:Simulation of synaptic characteristics is essential for the application of organic field effect transistors (OFETs) in neural morphology. Although excellent performance, including bias stability and mobility, as well as photoelectric pulse synaptic simulation, has been achieved in SiO 2 -gated OFETs with PDVT-10 as an organic channel, there are relatively few studies on photoelectric pulse synaptic simulation of electrolyte-gated OFETs based on environmentally friendly and low-voltage operation. Herein, synaptic transistors based on organic semiconductors are reported to simulate the photoelectric pulse response by developing solution-based organic semiconductor PDVT-10, and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) with an electric double layer (EDL) effect to act as a channel and gate dielectric layer, respectively, and organic lithium salt-doped PVA is used to enhance the EDL effect. The presence of electrical pulses in doped devices not only achieves basic electrical synaptic characteristics, but also significantly realizes the long-term characteristics, pain perception, memory and sensitization applications. Furthermore, the introduction of photoinitiator molecules into the channel layer leads to improved photosynaptic performances by using light-induced free radicals, and the photoelectric synergistic effect has been actualized by introducing heterojunction architecture. This work provides promising prospects for achieving photoelectric pulse modulation based on organic synaptic devices, which shows great potential for the development of artificial intelligence.

Linear Versus Nonlinear Electro-Optic Effects in Materials.

Abstract:Two schemes are proposed to compute the nonlinear electro-optic (EO) tensor for the first time. In the first scheme, we compute the linear EO tensor of the structure under a finite electric field, while we compute the refractive index of the structure under a finite electric field in the second scheme. Such schemes are applied to Pb(Zr, Ti)O-3 and BaTiO3 ferroelectric oxides. It is found to reproduce a recently observed feature, namely, why Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O-3 adopts a mostly linear EO response while BaTiO3 exhibits a strongly nonlinear conversion between electric and optical properties. Furthermore, the atomistic insight provided by the proposed ab initio scheme reveals the origin of such qualitatively different responses, in terms of the field-induced behavior of the frequencies of some phonon modes and of some force constants.

Abstract:Typical electro-optic polymers are characterized by second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophores arranged polar-asymmetrically in an amorphous polymer matrix. It is believed that the electro-optic activity of workhorse NLO chromophores (e.g., DANS and Disperse Red) are of insufficient magnitude to be viable candidates for commercial device-quality materials.1 Consequently, much effort has been directed in the past few years toward the development of chromophores with device-quality magnitudes of molecular optical nonlinearities. Unfortunately, the translation of these so-called high-β chromophores to the expected bulk electro-optic activities in polymers generally has not been achieved. Recently, we have shown that this lack of electro-optic activity is due primarily to strong intermolecular electrostatic interactions between chromophores, which tend to align the chromophores in an antiparallel fashion, resulting in no net polar asymmetry in the bulk material.2,3
