Abstract:A helix type slow wave structure filled partially with plasma is immersed in a strong longitudinal magnetic field. By means of a sheath model and linear field theory, the dispersion relation of the slow wave structure is derived. The hybrid modes, which are formed at frequencies where the phase velocities of electromagnetic wave and electrostatic wave coincide, are found. The trend of change for the dispersion characteristic, interaction impedance and linear gain is analyzed in different plasma densities by numerical computation. Some useful results are obtained on the basis of the discussion.

Abstract:A one-dimensional nonlinear time-dependent theory for helix traveling wave tubes is studied. A generalized electromagnetic field is applied to the expression of the radio frequency field. To simulate the variations of the high frequency structure, such as the pitch taper and the effect of harmonics, the spatial average over a wavelength is substituted by a time average over a wave period in the equation of the radio frequency field. Under this assumption, the space charge field of the electron beam can be treated by a space charge wave model along with the space charge coefficient. The effects of the radio frequency and the space charge fields on the electrons are presented by the equations of the electron energy and the electron phase. The time-dependent simulation is compared with the frequency-domain simulation for a helix TWT, which validates the availability of this theory.

Abstract:The nonlinear theory of helix traveling wave tube (TWT) was developed, based on the particle simulation in time domain. The wave propagating through the helix was modeled with a configuration consisting of the three-dimensional helix belt, the dielectric rod load, and conducting walls. In the derivation, either a uniform field generated by a solenoid or a periodic field produced by a permanent magnet stack, were used to focus the electron beam; and the electric field induced by electron beam was evaluated with Poisson equation on the basis of finite-difference grid formulation. The interaction between the electron beam and the wave was calculated in MacCormack difference method. The time varying output of the helix TWT was calculated. The simulated results were compared with those obtained by Magic simulation code and three-dimensional Christine code.

Abstract:A 1-D nonlinear theory of a rectangular helix traveling-wave tube (TWT) interacting with a ribbon beam is presented in this paper. The RF field is modeled by a transmission line equivalent circuit, the ribbon beam is divided into a sequence of thin rectangular electron discs with the same cross section as the beam, and the charges are assumed to be uniformly distributed over these discs. Then a method of computing the space-charge field by solving Green's Function in the Cartesian Coordinate-system is fully described. Nonlinear partial differential equations for field amplitudes and Lorentz force equations for particles are solved numerically using the fourth-order Runge-Kutta technique. The tube's gain, output power, and efficiency of the above TWT are computed. The results show that increasing the cross section of the ribbon beam will improve a rectangular helix TWT's efficiency and reduce the saturated length.

Abstract:By virtue of the introduction of new dependent variable and the separation of variables technique, the transient responses of a special non-homogeneous magneto-electro-elastic hollow cylinder are transformed to two Volterra integral equations of the second kind of about two functions with respect to time. These integral equations can be solved successfully by means of the interpolation method. Then, the complete solutions of displacements, stresses, electric potential, electric displacements, magnetic potential and magnetic inductions are obtained. The present method is suitable for a magneto-electro-elastic hollow cylinder with an arbitrary thickness subjected to arbitrary axisymmetric mechanical and electromagnetic loads. Numerical results are finally presented.

Abstract:A 1D frequency-domain nonlinear model for illustrating the beam-wave interactions of sine waveguide (SWG) traveling-wave tubes (TWTs) was studied. Our model considered space-charge fields and Ohmic losses to make the model closer to practical situations. The sheet beam was split into a series of rectangular electron plates in the axial direction, and the space-charge field was calculated by solving Green's function. The dynamic equations and relativistic equations of motion were solved self-consistently to obtain the nonlinear characteristics of the power saturation, as well as the electron velocity, phase space distributions, etc. A 0.22THz SWG TWT was used to illustrate and verify the validity of the theoretical model. The output power and gain results were in good agreement with those from the Computer Simulation Technology (CST) 3D particle-in-cell simulation. In addition, the code developed based upon the theoretical model produced faster results than the CST simulation.

Abstract:The helical slow-wave structure which has higher frequency and bigger output power is required in the development of high-power traveling wave tube. In view of this point, a thick tape helix SWS is analyzed in this paper. The radial field expression and dispersion equation are derived with the helical coordinate system. The effect of the helix thickness on the dispersion characteristic has been analyzed by numerical calculation. And the theoretical results by our approach have also been compared with those by HooK's method. It shows that the data of our approach is closer to CST simulation. In the paper, we have theoretically modeled a helical SWS by a sheath helix of finite thickness that is treated by utilizing helical coordinate system to account for the finite thickness of the helix wire. The dispersion characteristics and the interaction impendence of the method have been compared with these of Hook's models.

Abstract:We addressed the three-dimensional,nonlinear beam-wave interaction in a traveling wave tube (TWT) with dynamic velocity taper helix.The large signal TWT code was written,based on the three dimensional field model and the numerical space charge field distribution;and the cold test was performed by using the surface current distribution of the taper helix.The nonlinear property of the C-band TWT with the dynamic velocity taper (DVT) technology was characterized;and its efficiency was found to be up to 42% by analyzing the AM/AM and AM/PM nonlinear properties.The electronic structures of the spent beam and the precise three-dimensional traces obtained provide the reliable information for the design of the multiple-depressed collector (MDC).

Abstract:In this paper, the helix slow wave structure (SWS) of traveling wave tubes (TWT's) has been analyzed. Dielectric supporting rods of arbitrary cross section have been considered in this analysis. The inhomogeneous dielectric loading factor has been accounted for by modeling the discrete support with a number of continuous dielectric tubes of appropriate effective dielectric permittivity. The helix tape model has been used for the field analysis. Furthermore the thickness of the helix tape has been considered. A rigorous solution of the field equations, including the contribution of the space harmonics, was performed to evaluate the phase velocity and the interaction impedance up to millimeter-wave frequencies. The nonuniformity of radial propagation constant over the structure cross section has been also included. With respect to other approaches, a closed-form expression of the field constants has been obtained. A study to choose the optimum number of space harmonics and dielectric tubes to be used in the analysis, has shown how the results are more sensitive to the number of space harmonics than to the number of dielectric tubes, beyond a certain number of the latter. The validity of this theory has been proved by comparison between measurements and simulations for helix SWS with different dimensions, rod shapes and operating frequency band.

Abstract:Considering the attenuation, severing, taper and magnetic admittance, the self-consistent working equations are presented, which describe the operation of 3D nonlinear beam-wave interaction for helix traveling wave tube based on periodic structure characteristic and Poynting's theorem. Using Fourier transform from time-dependent current to ac current consisting of a series of wave frequencies, the space fields are obtained through weighing charge particles to fixed meshes with the help of particle_in_cell technique. The model also computes 3D electronic tracks and helix interception current, the electronic energy spectrum of spent beam are represented, which is helpful for designing multistage depressed collector （MDC）. Calculation of Ku-band TWT in IECAS was shown to be in better agreement with experiment, including output power and analysis of MDC.

Some useful results are obtained on the basis of the discussion.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel Eulerian nonlinear beam-wave interaction (BWI) theory considering harmonic interaction of a helix traveling-wave tube (TWT) is developed. Derived from this Eulerian model, the novel Eulerian nonlinear analytic solutions (the fourth-order analytic solution of fundamental and the second-order analytic solution of harmonic) are first obtained by the method of successive approximation. The analytic relationships between electric fields of fundamental/harmonic frequencies and electron phases are also found. Then, the Eulerian nonlinear analytic solutions and Eulerian nonlinear BWI theory are compared to a Lagrangian theory. C-band and Ku-band helix TWTs based on a single pitch section are included in the simulation. It is found that the Eulerian nonlinear analytic solutions and Eulerian nonlinear BWI theory agree well with the Lagrangian theory at 1-dB gain compression point. Interestingly, the saturation effects caused by electron overtaking cannot be found by the traditional Eulerian analysis but can be described by the Eulerian nonlinear analytic solutions and Eulerian nonlinear BWI theory. Moreover, Eulerian nonlinear analytic solutions are simpler and more accurately than existing approaches and, thus, allow analytical progress. This paper confirms that the Eulerian nonlinear analytic solutions can outperform the previous proposals.

Abstract:To track and simulate the complex physical phenomena of beam-wave interaction of helix Traveling Wave Tube(TWT) fast and in real-time,a nonlinear interaction computing system is established by improving the T type loss L.Brillouin model and taking the finite-difference time-domain method and the particle-in-cell technic as core means for numerical solution.Based on this,a steady C program is developed.Through running the program,a mature TWT is simulated and the differences between the output gain calculation results and the test data are less than 6.1%.

Abstract:Theoretical simulation of the dispersion and interaction impedance characteristics of an inhomogeneously-loaded helical slow-wave structure is validated. The structure is supported by double-curve-shaped rods which are smoothed out into a number of dielectric tubes with their respective effective permittivity values. The effects of the helix thickness are taken into account by considering a free-space gap equal to the difference between the mean helix radius and the outer helix radius. Moreover, the helix tape model is used instead of the simpler sheath-helix model. The theoretical predictions are compared with those of MAFIA simulation. The dispersion error is found to be within 3–6 percent and the impedance characteristic is in great agreement with that of MAFIA simulation. At last, for the sake of comparison, the cold-test characteristics under sheath-helix model are also provided.

Abstract:A novel helical slow-wave structure is proposed to develop wide-bandwidth, high-gain, high-power millimeter-wave traveling wave tube. This structure evolves from a conventional helical slow-wave structure with three parallel rectangular or other arbitrarily-shaped slots made in the outside of the helix. In this paper, the electromagnetic characteristics and thermal analysis of this structure are obtained using the finite-element-method. From our calculations, the novel and the conventional structure have similar dispersion characteristics, while the novel structure has higher heat dissipation capability than that of conventional one.

Abstract:Based on the theory of coupled-wave, the dispersion equation and coupling condition of helically corrugated waveguide are obtained by the method of impedance perturbation. Then the nonlinear coupled equations are obtained from the relativistic equation which describes the motion of electrons. The numerical calculation and analysis of cold cavity by PIC software are applied to analyze both hot and cold dispersion characteristics of this waveguide.

Abstract:The traveling wave tube is an electron beam device that works on a similar principle to the beam-plasma instability, where the background plasma is replaced by an electromagnetic waveguiding structure. The nonlinear evolution of the instability includes wave breaking and the formation of multivalued solutions, and conventionally these solutions have been computed using Lagrangian techniques. Recently, an Eulerian method for computing multivalued solutions was developed in the context of geometrical optics and has been applied to the klystron, a relative of the traveling wave tube. In this paper we apply the Eulerian technique to solve a traveling wave tube model and compare the results to a Lagrangian technique. The results are found to be in good qualitative agreement with small quantitative differences that are attributed to the numerical methods.

Abstract:A planar radial helix slow wave structure based on a low loss medium is suggested. Instead of the axial, the beam-wave interaction path of this structure is on the radial direction. That is the main difference between it and most other traveling wave tubes. In this structure, a cylindrical wave has a constant radial phase velocity exists [1]. Because its cathode surface is large, high current can be taken from it with a low current density. While the current density decreases in radial direction, the space-charge parameter is small along the section of the stream [2]. The radial slow wave structure is a wideband inhomogeneous line and therefore the interaction of the radial electron stream and the higher direct and inverse harmonics decreased and even disappeared [3]. © 2010 IEEE.

Abstract:The coaxial helical-groove slow-wave structure is a new-type high power circuit. The dispersion equation of this circuit with an annular electron beam is obtained according to self-consistent field theory. The computation results of the hot dispersion equation show the relations between electron beam parameters and the small signal gain. The presented analysis will be useful for the design of the TWT with coaxial helical-groove circuit.

Abstract:The generation and evolution of nonlinear waves in microwave amplifiers such as travelling wave tubes, free electron lasers and klystrons have been studied. The analysis is based on the hydrodynamic and field equations for the self-consistent evolution of the beam density distribution, the current velocity and the electromagnetic fields. A system of coupled nonlinear Schr\"{o}dinger equations for the slowly varying amplitudes of interacting beam-density waves has been derived. Under the approximation of an isolated mode neglecting the effect of the rest of the modes, this system reduces to a single nonlinear Schr\"{o}dinger equation for that particular mode.
