Abstract:A novel unified Hamiltonian approach is proposed to solve Maxwell-Schrodinger equation for modeling the interaction between classical electromagnetic (EM) fields and particles. Based on the Hamiltonian of electromagnetics and quantum mechanics, a unified Maxwell-Schrodinger system is derived by the variational principle. The coupled system is well-posed and symplectic, which ensures energy conserving property during the time evolution. However, due to the disparity of wavelengths of EM waves and that of electron waves, a numerical implementation of the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method to the multiscale coupled system is extremely challenging. To overcome this difficulty, a reduced eigenmode expansion technique is first applied to represent the wave function of the particle. Then, a set of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) governing the time evolution of the slowly-varying expansion coefficients are derived to replace the original Schrodinger equation. Finally, Maxwell's equations represented by the vector potential with a Coulomb gauge, together with the ODEs, are solved self-consistently. For numerical examples, the interaction between EM fields and a particle is investigated for both the closed, open and inhomogeneous electromagnetic systems. The proposed approach not only captures the Rabi oscillation phenomenon in the closed cavity but also captures the effects of radiative decay and shift in the open free space. After comparing with the existing theoretical approximate models, it is found that the approximate models break down in certain cases where a rigorous self-consistent approach is needed. This work is helpful for the EM simulation of emerging nanodevices or next-generation quantum electrodynamic systems.

Abstract:This work concentrates on a TM-polarisation plane wave scattered by various multiple strip-loaded cylindrical chiral objects. The two-dimensional electric dyadic Green's functions in multi-layered cylindrical chiral media are derived according to the scattering superposition principle. Then the direct singular integral equation has been formulated for describing the electric current distributions on the multiple strips. Numerical investigations has been performed to demonstrate the far-zone field characteristics with the changing of geometrical dimensions and constitutive parameters of strip loaded cylindrical chiral objects.

Abstract:In this article a spectral-domain decoupling method of electromagnetic waves propagating and radiating of sources in bianisotropic gyroelectromagnetic chiral media is presented, and the general transmission-line-like equations for the description of field quantities (I(E'), V(E'), V(M'), I(M') are obtained using the technique of matrix transformation, which has been developed by Tsalamengas. As a practical application, the propagation behavior of electromagnetic waves in multilayered bianisotropic gyroelectromagnetic parallel-plate chiro-waveguides is investigated, and it is shown that in such a nonreciprocal chirowaveguide, propagating modes are always hybrid (EH and HE). Especially, the dyadic Green's function of sources in a grounded bianisotropic gyroelectromagnetic chiral superstrate-substrate structure is derived, and it can be directly used to analyze the radiation characteristics of gyroelectromagnetic chirostrip antennas. Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new direct approach to solving Maxwell's equations in time domain. Completely different from the classic one, this approach is derived and analysed based on a strategy which is independent of the well-known Fourier (or Laplace) transformation and the corresponding inverse transformation. The analysis first decouples Maxwell's equations on the basis of a potential theory and then uses an operator-variation-of-constants formula (the Duhamel Principle) to achieve the expression of exact solutions of Maxwell's equations. We further illustrate the simplicity and multi-purpose applicability of the new approach in linear, homogeneous, isotropic and lossless (bounded or unbounded and source-free or source) medium (in rectangular, cylindrical or spherical coordinates). Moreover, we make a study on impulse electromagnetics. With this new approach, this paper bridges the gap between the time domain electromagnetics and the frequency domain electromagnetics.

Abstract:This paper considers an obstacle scattering problem in a chiral medium under circularly polarized oblique plane wave incidence, which can be represented as a combination of a left-circularly polarized plane wave and a right-circularly polarized one. We apply a reduced model problem with coupled oblique derivative boundary conditions, describing the cross-coupling effect of electric and magnetic fields. A novel boundary integral equation is constructed by introducing single-layer potential operators and the corresponding normal and tangential derivative operators. The corresponding properties are obtained by splitting techniques to overcome the singularity of integral operators. A numerical method for solving the boundary integral equation is developed, whose convergence is proved. Numerical results are presented to show the performance of the proposed method.

Abstract:This paper discusses the use of the Riemann-Silberstein vector to solve the source-free Maxwell's equations and obtains novel analytical solutions. The solving process naturally leads to the spinor form of the source-free Maxwell's equations. Several powerful theorems are established to solve this spinor form equation. The Waveguide Solution Theorem provides an elegant way to solve waveguide problems, while The Schrodinger Solution Theorem connects the Maxwell's equations with the two-dimensional Schrodinger equation. By utilizing The Schrodinger Solution Theorem, a precise formula for spatiotemporal diffraction of the Maxwell's equations is derived, which allows for the reconstruction of electromagnetic waves throughout space and time based on the field distribution on the diffraction screen. And finally, by studying some relevant contour integrals, two additional simple but beautiful mathematical theorems that are necessarily satisfied by electromagnetic field in any source-free region are derived.

Abstract:Consider a time–harmonic electromagnetic plane wave incident on a biperiodic structure in ℝ3. The periodic structure separates two homogeneous regions. The medium inside the structure is chiral and heterogeneous. In general, wave propagation in the chiral medium is governed by Maxwell's equations together with the Drude– Born–Fedorov (constitutive) equations. In this paper, the diffraction problem is formulated in a bounded domain by introducing a pair of transparent boundary conditions. It is then shown that for all but possibly a discrete set of parameters, there is a unique quasi–periodic weak solution to the diffraction problem. Our proof is based on the Hodge decomposition, a compact imbedding result, and the Lax–Milgram Lemma. In addition, an energy conservation for the weak solution is also shown.

Abstract:Electromagnetic scattering from three-dimensional chiral objects above a perfectly electric or magnetic conducting plane (PEC and PMC) is analyzed by the hybrid finite element-boundary integral (FEM-BI) method. The chiral image principle is used to transform the original single chiral target in half space into two chiral targets with the same permittivity and permeability yet conjugate chirality parameters. Numerical examples demonstrate that the FEM-BI method provides a flexible and powerful solution of multiple scattering from inhomogeneous chiral objects. Both near field distribution and radar cross section (RCS) of chiral objects illuminated by plane waves are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the hybrid method.

Abstract:The T-matrix method is used to model semicircular channels filled with chiral materials in a conducting plane. The coupling of both TM and TE polarizations is represented explicitly. Addition theorems in half space are derived and used to take account of the multiple scattering of parallel channels. The boundary conditions are checked for chiral channels to verify the algorithm proposed. Co- and cross-polarization effects of chiral materials are investigated by varying several physical and geometrical parameters of the parallel channels.

Abstract:In the present work the scattering problem of electromagnetic waves by a penetrable chiral body embedded in a chiral environment is formulated and studied. Vector potentials in terms of the dyadic fundamental solution of the differential operator for chiral media are defined and used in order to study the solvability of the direct scattering problem. Moreover, these potentials are used in order to study the mathematical foundation of the method of fundamental solutions (MFS) in chiral media. It is proven that the approximation of the sought for solution of the direct scattering problem via the MFS is reduced to the approximation of the known boundary data from appropriately constructed systems of functions for which linear independence and completeness on the surface of the scatterer are proven. An inverse electromagnetic scattering problem is presented and studied in order to obtain information about the geometrical properties of a perfectly conducting scatterer of unknown size embedded in a chiral medium. A MFS technique is applied in order to solve this type of inverse scattering problems. Numerical results are presented for the special geometrical case of spherical scattering objects for both direct and inverse scattering problems in chiral media.

Abstract:We present a new way of deriving effective theories of dynamical electromagnetic fields in general media. It can be used to give a systematic formulation of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) with strong magnetic fields, including systems with chiral matter and Adler-Bell-Jackiw (ABJ) anomaly. We work in the regime in which velocity and temperature fluctuations can be neglected. The resulting chiral anomalous MHD incorporates and generalizes the chiral magnetic effect, the chiral separation effect, the chiral electric separation effect, as well as recently derived strong-field MHD, all in a single coherent framework. At linearized level, the theory predicts that the chiral magnetic wave does not survive dynamical electromagnetic fields. A different chiral wave, to which we refer as the chiral magnetic electric separation wave, emerges as a result of dynamical versions of the chiral electric separation effect and the chiral magnetic effect. We predict its wave velocity. We also introduce a simple, but solvable nonlinear model to explore the fate of the chiral instability.

Abstract:This article presents a stabilized nodal discontinuous Galerkin pseudospectral time-domain (DG-PSTD) algorithm for fully anisotropic electromagnetic waves. This solver permits arbitrary high-order basis functions and adaptive hexahedral elements, thus very efficient for large-scale wave propagation in complex media. Maxwell’s equations are reformulated in a unified hyperbolic form, where a localized anisotropic Riemann solver is derived to serve as a numerical flux to exchange information across adjacent elements in the DG-PSTD scheme. This local analysis method also helps impose the time-domain anisotropic plane wave incidence in the total/scattering field framework. Numerical validations and applications demonstrate the efficiency, accuracy, and capability of this new high-order solver for 3-D large-scale generally anisotropic electromagnetic media.

Abstract:A simple approach is proposed for the quantization of the electromagneticfield in nonlinear and inhomogeneous media. Given the dielectric function andnonlinear susceptibilities, the Hamiltonian of the electromagnetic field isdetermined completely by this quantization method. From Heisenberg's equationswe derive Maxwell's equations for the field operators. When the nonlinearitygoes to zero, this quantization method returns to the generalized canonicalquantization procedure for linear inhomogeneous media [Phys. Rev. A, 43, 467,1991]. The explicit Hamiltonians for the second-order and third-order nonlinearquasi-steady-state processes are obtained based on this quantization procedure.

Abstract:Beginning from the integral forms of the four physics laws, we derive Maxwell’s equations for a mechano-driven, slow, nonuniform moving speed media system based on Galilean space and time, thus presenting a new approach for solving the electromagnetic field problems in a moving system with acceleration. For the electromagnetism of macro-objects on Earth, we believe that the relativistic effect can be generally ignored. Different from the classical texts on electrodynamics, which assumes motion is a constant speed along a straight line in the inertial frame, our theory describes the electromagnetism of the media systems in the noninertial frame with acceleration and time-dependent volume, shape, and boundary. Most importantly, the expanded Maxwell’s equations are solved through mathematical means. Our objective is to study the dynamics of coupling among the mechano-electric-magnetic multifields. Lastly, the expansion of the boundary conditions at the nanoscale boundaries and the application of the Maxwell’s equations in a lumped circuit system are discussed.

Abstract:The scattering of time-harmonic electromagnetic waves propagating in a homogeneous chiral environment by obstacles is studied. The problem is simplified to a two-dimensional scattering problem, and the existence and the uniqueness of solutions are discussed by a variational approach. The diffraction problem is solved by a finite element method with perfectly matched absorbing layers. Our computational experiments indicate that the method is efficient.

Abstract:In order to get numerical solution of Maxwell’s equations which plays an important role in the electric-magnetic fields, a new anisotropic nonconforming mixed finite element method is presented. Based on special construction of the element pair and some novel techniques, error estimates of electric and magnetic fields in L2 norm are obtained under anisotropic meshes. The convergence results demonstrate the validity of the anisotropic nonconforming mixed element method for solving Maxwell’s equations.
Quantum simulation of Maxwell's equations via Schrödingersation

Abstract:We present quantum algorithms for electromagnetic fields governed by Maxwell's equations. The algorithms are based on the Schrödingersation approach, which transforms any linear PDEs and ODEs with non-unitary dynamics into a system evolving under unitary dynamics, via a warped phase transformation that maps the equation into one higher dimension. In this paper, our quantum algorithms are based on either a direct approximation of Maxwell's equations combined with Yee's algorithm, or a matrix representation in terms of Riemann-Silberstein vectors combined with a spectral approach and an upwind scheme. We implement these algorithms with physical boundary conditions, including perfect conductor and impedance boundaries. We also solve Maxwell's equations for a linear inhomogeneous medium, specifically the interface problem. Several numerical experiments are performed to demonstrate the validity of this approach. In addition, instead of qubits, the quantum algorithms can also be formulated in the continuous variable quantum framework, which allows the quantum simulation of Maxwell's equations in analog quantum simulation.

Wave propagation in a chiral fluid: an undergraduate study

Abstract:We study the propagation of electromagnetic waves in a chiral fluid, where the molecules are described by a simplified version of the Kuhn coupled oscillator model. The eigenmodes of Maxwell's equations are circularly polarized waves. The application of a static magnetic field further leads to a magnetochiral term in the index of refraction of the fluid, which is independent of the wave polarization. A similar result holds when absorption is taken into account. Interference experiments and photochemical reactions have recently demonstrated the existence of the magnetochiral term. The comparison with Faraday rotation in an achiral fluid emphasizes the different symmetry properties of the two effects.
