Abstract:SummaryAn adaptive compensation control scheme is proposed by using backstepping techniques for a class of uncertain nonlinear systems preceded by m hysteretic actuators, which exhibit unknown backlash nonlinearity and possibly experience unknown failures. An estimated smooth inverse of the actuator backlash is utilized in the controller design to compensate for the effects of the backlash and actuator failures. It is shown that the designed controllers can ensure all signals of closed‐loop system bounded for any failure pattern of hysteretic actuators and tracking performance is also maintained. Simulation studies confirm the effectiveness of the proposed controller, especially the improvement of system performances. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:In this technical note, we consider adaptive control of single input uncertain nonlinear systems in the presence of input saturation and unknown external disturbance. By using backstepping approaches, two new robust adaptive control algorithms are developed by introducing a well defined smooth function and using a Nussbaum function. The Nussbaum function is introduced to compensate for the nonlinear term arising from the input saturation. Unlike some existing control schemes for systems with input saturation, the developed controllers do not require assumptions on the uncertain parameters within a known compact set and a priori knowledge on the bound of the external disturbance. Besides showing global stability, transient performance is also established and can be adjusted by tuning certain design parameters.

Abstract:The adaptive backstepping approach has been an effective tool in control of uncertain linear systems. However, its traditional recursive non-linear design is complicated, especially for a plant whose relative degree is high. This paper proposes a Lyapunov-based linear backstepping control scheme for a kind of uncertain linear systems whose relative degree is identical with its system dimension. The global stability and asymptotic convergence of the closed-loop system are guaranteed.

Abstract:In this technical note, a robust adaptive control scheme is proposed based on backstepping techniques for a class of nonlinear systems with unknown parameters. A modeling error may also exist in every state equation or channel and it is bounded by a known function which is allowed to depend on all system states. It is shown that the proposed adaptive control scheme can ensure all signals in the closed-loop system bounded, if the strength of system modeling errors is sufficiently weak. Transient performance is also established. Thus stabilizing systems in classical strict-feedback forms with sufficiently small non-triangular structural perturbations is successfully addressed. In the case that system parameters are known, a non-adaptive robust controller is designed to globally exponentially stabilize such a class of nonlinear systems. Finally simulation studies are used to verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:Two kinds of adaptive controllers were developed for a class of nonlinear system with input backlash. For the inherent non-smooth and dynamic nonlinear nature of the unknown backlash, it is linearly parameterized globally with bounded modeling error. An adaptive controller and an adaptive robust controller for nonlinear system were designed in the case of unknown input backlash, parameter uncertainty and external disturbances. The proposed adaptive control law ensures the asymptotic tracking stability of closed-loop system. But the violent chatting limits its application in practice. The adaptive robust control ensures that all signals of the closed-loop system are bounded and the tracking error is kept in a desired precision. The theoretical analysis and simulation results show the validity of the proposed controllers.

Abstract:This paper presents a variation on adaptive backstepping output feedback control design for uncertain minimum-phase linear systems. Unlike the traditional nonlinear design, the proposed control method is linear and Lyapunov-based without utilizing overparametrization, tuning functions, or nonlinear damping terms to address parameter estimation error. Local stability of the closed-loop system and trajectory tracking are guaranteed. Abstract:In this paper, we consider global adaptive output-feedback control of nonlinear systems in output-feedback form, without a priori knowledge of system nonlinearities. Our proposed adaptive controller is a high-gain linear controller (since we have no knowledge on system nonlinearities), with the high-gain parameter tuned online via a switching logic. Global stability results of the closed-loop system have been proved.

Abstract:An adaptive robust control algorithm is developed for a class of nonlinear dynamic system with unknown input backlash, parametric uncertainties, un-modeled dynamics and uncertain disturbances. A globally linearly parameterized model with bounded modelling error for backlash is presented. The adaptive robust controller is designed, which is composed of model compensation, feedback stabilization and robust feedback terms. The transient dynamic error and steady state error performance are given. The proposed adaptive robust control law can ensure that all closed-loop signals are bounded and achieve the tracking within the desired precision. Simulations results show the effectiveness of the controller.

Abstract:In this paper, an adaptive control algorithm is put forward, which applies to minimum phase and nonminimum phase bilinear systems with bounded disturbances. Its closed-loop stability is proved and the upper bound of control error is given. Test results on a pilot glutamic acid crystalization plant show that this algorithm is of good ability against load disturbances, and gives much better performance than a nonlinear Pin control.

Abstract:This article involves the adaptive inverse control of a coupled vessel-riser system with input backlash and system uncertainties. By introducing an adaptive inverse dynamics of backlash, the backlash control input is divided into a mismatch error and an expected control command, and then a novel adaptive inverse control strategy is established to eliminate vibration, tackle backlash, and compensate for system uncertainties. The bounded stability of the controlled system is analyzed and demonstrated by exploiting the Lyapunov’s criterion. The simulation comparison experiments are finally presented to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the control algorithm.

Abstract:In this paper, an event-triggered adaptive control approach is proposed to control a class of discrete-time uncertain nonlinear systems, based on the backstepping adaptive control and the fixed threshold strategy. The designed event-triggered adaptive control can guarantee that all the closed-loop signals are globally bounded and the tracking error converges to a compact set. Simulation results are given to illustrate the performance and effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:Real‐world nonlinear control systems (e.g., robots) are influenced dynamically by backlash and saturation. However, it is lacking of a control design tool with a sound theory to deal with these phenomena and achieve optimal finite‐time stability simultaneously. To this end, we propose a novel anti‐windup and backlash compensation‐based finite‐time control (AWBC‐FTC) method for an unsolved control task of a general class of unstable nonlinear systems under input saturation and backlash nonlinearity. It includes a compound control structure with two layers where the upper switches two control modes and the lower regulates the system in either the backlash mode or the contact mode. New stability theory together with parameter optimization algorithms are also proposed to support new design approaches of two sub‐controllers where the adversary effects of input saturation and backlash are eliminated and the optimal finite state stability under a guaranteed domain of attraction is achieved. Experimental results on a benchmark robot system verify the advantages of the proposed design tools over the other in terms of a bunch of transient and stability measures. Therefore, the work enriches both theory and design of nonlinear systems for a challenging control objective.

Due to the inherent dynamic nonlinear nature of backlash, existing robust adaptive control methods mainly focus on using on-line parameter adaptation for an approximate inversion of the unknown backlash. As a result, even in the absence of other uncertain nonlinearities and disturbance, asymptotic output tracking can never be achieved by continuous controller for the non-smooth characteristics of backlash. Experimental results also show that a linear controller alone performed better than a controller including the selected backlash inverter with a correctly estimated or overestimated backlash gap. Unlike many existing control schemes, the backlash inverse is not constructed in this paper. A new linearly parameterized model for backlash is presented and the projection algorithm is used for parameters estimation. The proposed adaptive robust control law consists of three parts: model compensation term, the robust control term and robust feedback term. The ARC ensure that all closed-loop signals are bounded and achieves the tracking within the desired precision. Simulations results illustrate the performance of the ARC.

Abstract:Abstract This study considers the tracking control problem of the nonstrict-feedback nonlinear system with unknown backlash-like hysteresis, and a finite-time adaptive fuzzy control scheme is developed to address this problem. More precisely, the fuzzy systems are employed to approximate the unknown nonlinearities, and the design difficulties caused by the nonlower triangular structure are also overcome by using the property of fuzzy systems. Besides, the effect of unknown hysteresis input is compensated by approximating an intermediate variable. With the aid of finite-time stability theory, the proposed control algorithm could guarantee that the tracking error converges to a smaller region. Finally, a simulation example is provided to further verify the above theoretical results.

Abstract:This paper addresses a class of nonstrict-feedback stochastic nonlinear systems. It addresses the impact of backlash-like hysteresis as well as actuator faults simultaneously. Radial basis function neural networks (RBFNNs) are used specifically to approximate unknown nonlinear functions. Furthermore, a backstepping approach is used to design a neural network-based adaptive fault-tolerant controller for the system. The suggested control methodology compensates effectively for the negative impacts of actuator faults and backlash-like hysteresis. Based on the Lyapunov stability theory, the proposed controller ensures that all closed-loop system signals are semi-globally uniformly ultimately bounded (SGUUB) and the system output tracks the reference signal with bounded tracking error. Furthermore, a numerical example and a real-world example of a single-link manipulator demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:In this paper, an adaptive controller is put forward for bilinear systems with bounded disturbances. Its closed-loop stability is proved and the upper bound of the control error is given. The bilinear adaptive controller has been used in the control of a pH process, which is difficult to control due to its highly nonlinear nature. Experiments on a pilot glutamic acid crystalization plant show that the bilinear adaptive pH controller has satisfactory static and dynamic performances, and can adapt to changes in process conditions.

Abstract:In this article, an adaptive fuzzy tracking control method is established for nonstrict feedback nonlinear systems (NFNS) with time-varying state constraints and backlash-like hysteresis. The property of the fuzzy basis function is employed to circumvent the algebraic loop problem and the adaptive backstepping technique is deployed in design process. To address the time-varying state constraints, the time-varying barrier Lyapunov function is integrated into the adaptive fuzzy backstepping design framework to keep all states within the predefined region. The devised control scheme not only surmounts the adverse effect caused by backlash-like hysteresis, but also achieves the expected tracking performance for NFNS with time-varying state constraints. Based on the Lyapunov stability analysis, it is proved that all signals of the closed-loop system are uniformly ultimately bounded. Finally, simulation examples are provided to confirm the validity of the designed method.
