Abstract:Based on the investigation and analysis of the traffic volume in highway tunnel group region, the development trend of traffic volume is analyzed by Grey model. Then the prediction accuracy is improved by Markov optimization. The method in this paper has a better prediction accuracy and practicality in a period than other common prediction methods. It can be used for the prediction analysis of traffic volume and for early warning by highway management.

Abstract:This paper provides empirical observations and measurements on highway traffic breakdown using discrete wavelet transform for revealing some important features related to breakdown activation and recovery process during transitions from free-flow traffic to congested states. The method effectively distinguishes useful breakdown information from nonlinear and nonstationary speed time series. Comparatively, the analysis of loop detector data from two highways (I80-W in Berkeley, CA, U.S. and G6-S in Beijing, China) shows that the wavelet-based energy approach enables effective identification of traffic breakdown occurrence time, recovery time, state transition time, and congested speed. Observations show that I80-W performs longer transition time and recovery time in traffic breakdown than G6-S, from which it is inferred that traffic breakdown occurs and recovers more abruptly on G6-S. The empirical study has important implications for understanding the breakdown process and statistical characteristics of traffic state transitions.

Abstract:The short-term forecast of traffic flow is the foundation of a successful control and route guidance in intelligent transport systems (ITS). Many attempts on the forecast methods have been done in recent years. The effort of this paper focus on the shortterm predictability of traffic flow what determines whether the same or similar methods applied in middle or long term forecast is also effective to short term. After the relation among the predictability, self-similarity and fractal is explained in the paper, an approach to verify the existence of self-similarity in traffic system based on the state space reconstruction is proposed and a practical example on this method is given.

According to the least square approaching principle, a datum curve model and a difference correction model are first established using exponent smooth forecasting method. Abstract:Accurate prediction of the traffic state has received sustained attention for its ability to provide the anticipatory traffic condition required for people's travel and traffic management. In this paper, we propose a novel short-term traffic flow prediction method based on wavelet transform (WT) and multi-dimensional Taylor network (MTN), which is named as W-MTN. Influenced by the short-term noise disturbance in traffic flow information, the WT is employed to improve prediction accuracy by decomposing the time series of traffic flow. The MTN model, which exploits polynomials to approximate the unknown nonlinear function, makes full use of periodicity and temporal feature without transcendental knowledge and mechanism of the system to be predicted. Our proposed W-MTN model is evaluated on the traffic flow information in a certain area of Shenzhen, China. The experimental results indicate that the proposed W-MTN model offers better prediction performance and temporal correlation, as compared with the corresponding models in the known literature. In addition, the proposed model shows good robustness and generalization ability, when considering data from the different days and locations.

Abstract:This paper, based on the Kalman filter theory, established short-term traffic volume model. Kalman filter model has a good static stability, and adopts iterative method for optimal estimation of traffic. But the regular Kalman filtering traffic volume prediction established without considering the influencing factors on traffic and time-lag. Analyzing the influence factors of traffic volume based on grey entropy, and selects the main influencing factors by the size of grey entropy to establish the prediction of short-term traffic volume. Based on this, utilize the internet of things for data collection, and make a simulation experiment on a road in Shenyang. Simulation results show that model has good adaptability, high prediction accuracy on various states of traffic volume. It is a kind of effective traffic flow forecasting model.

Abstract:Traffic flow forecasting has attracted much interest in current literature because of its importance in both the theoretical and empirical aspects of ITS deployment. Many models and methods have been presented in the past. But most of them regard the transportation system as the linear system and using the linear theory to predict the traffic flow. In fact, transportation system is a nonlinear system and traffic flow data exhibits chaotic properties. In this paper, we try to use the chaos theory to forecast the traffic flow in a short-term. Usually there is noise in the collected data which decrease the forecasting precision. So we denoise the data using wavelet transform before forecasting in this paper. The experiment is performed for inductance loop data collected in five minutes interval from the viaduct of Yan'an road in Shanghai in China. And at last our study concludes that techniques based on phase space reconstruction can be used to predict the traffic flow in a short-term. Furthermore, the prediction result is accurate and reliable.

Abstract:This research concerns itself with a wavelet-SVM combined model study of the short-term traffic flow prediction issue. Different theories and methods have been introduced in the field to solve short-term traffic flow forecasting problem. And in our study, we attempt to use an alternative prediction framework to examine the combined model. This paper consists of four sections. A brief introduction is given in Section one of this study. Section two includes the theories of wavelet and support vector machine (SVM), then put forward the combined model. Section three focuses on a numerical study based on the actual speed data of an expressway in Beijing The whole paper ends with the conclusion that the combined model has very high accuracy.

Abstract:Forecasting short-term traffic flow is one critical component in traffic management to improve operational efficiency. Data driven method, which trains the predictor with historical data across a given past period, have been proved to perform well. However, days which experience significantly different traffic flow patterns, negatively influence forecasting results. This paper proposes an advanced method, making use of appropriate prediction based on pattern matching. First, historical data is divided into several groups, according to their patterns, by clustering algorithms. Then the predictor is trained for each group based on a convolutional neural networks and long-short-term-memory model. For each time point, the degree of similarity between the target day and each group is measured, and the predictor trained by the group possessing the highest degree of similarity is selected to be appropriate. Based on a case study from Seattle, we show that selecting an appropriate predictor can significantly improve the accuracy of predictions. In addition, we demonstrate that the new method can, in general, outperform alternative methods in terms of prediction accuracy and stability.

Abstract:ABSTRACTTraffic flow prediction is a basic function of Intelligent Transportation System. Due to the complexity of traffic phenomenon, most existing methods build complex models such as neural networks for traffic flow prediction. As a model may lose effect with time lapse, it is important to update the model on line. However, the high computational cost of maintaining a complex model puts great challenge for model updating. The high computation cost lies in two aspects: computation of complex model coefficients and huge amount training data for it. In this paper, we propose to use a nonparametric approach based on locally weighted learning to predict traffic flow. Our approach incrementally incorporates new data to the model and is computationally efficient, which makes it suitable for online model updating and predicting. In addition, we adopt wavelet analysis to extract the periodic characteristic of the traffic data, which is then used for the input of the prediction model instead of the raw traffic flow data. The primary experiments on real data demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our approach.

Abstract:A combined method based on of Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Subtraction Fuzzy Clustering (SFC), and Non-Parametric Regression (NPR) is proposed in view of nonlinearity and uncertainty for short-term forecasting of real-time traffic flow. A highly efficient case database is created from the original traffic volumes after the operations of PCA and SFC. The data-driven method of K-nearest neighbours NPR is used to make the forecasting. An emulation experiment is designed to test the validity of the method. The example results show it is better than normal NPR and meets real-time requirement.

Abstract:Based on wavelet decomposition and phase space reconstruction, proposed a multi-resolution SVR traffic flow prediction model. The complex traffic flow sequence is transformed into a single character at different scales by wavelet transform, and the sub-sequences of different scales are predicted by the SVR model respectively. To extract more key information from the time series, according to the chaotic characteristics of traffic flow, phase space decomposition is performed to improve prediction accuracy. Experiments show that the proposed method can better reflect the sequence details and variation characteristics and achieve higher prediction accuracy.

Abstract:A novel method of combining the wavelet and RLS to forecast the Internet traffic is discussed. The focus of this article is how to exploit the correlation structure to make accurate forecast of the Internet traffic, where the property of self-similarity or long-range dependence plays an important role. First, it is shown that through the wavelet transform, the long-range dependence of the temporal network traffic is destructed to short-range dependence among the wavelets. Such short-range dependence can be approximated with a linear correlation structure. Also the approximation coefficients can be fairly well forecast with a linear filter. Then, the method of combining the wavelet and RLS is used to forecast the Internet traffic and is applied to the empirical traffic data from Bellcore. The result shows that our new method achieves extraordinary accuracy.

Abstract:Due to the characteristics of time-varying traffic and nonlinearity, the short-term traffic flow data are difficult to predict accurately. The purpose of this paper is to improve the short-term traffic flow prediction accuracy through the proposed improved wavelet neural network prediction model and provide basic data and decision support for the intelligent traffic management system. In view of the extremely strong nonlinear processing power, self-organization, self-adaptation and learning ability of wavelet neural network (WNN), this paper uses it as the basic prediction model and uses the particle swarm optimization algorithm for the slow convergence rate and local optimal problem of WNN prediction algorithm. With the advantages of fast convergence, high robustness and strong global search ability, an improved particle swarm optimization algorithm is proposed to optimize the wavelet neural network prediction model. The improved wavelet neural network is used to predict short-term traffic flow. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is more efficient than the WNN and PSO–WNN algorithms alone. The prediction results are more stable and more accurate. Compared with the traditional wavelet neural network, the error is reduced by 14.994%.

Abstract:Forecasting short-term traffic flows is crucial in designing intelligent transportation systems. There has been significant research on this topic; however, no single model can maintain optimality under all conditions. This study analysed the complementarity of non-parametric regression and deep learning in terms of prediction accuracy. Then, a mixed prediction method, combining two sub-models based on a fuzzy logic system, was constructed. First, the two sub-models based on long-short-term memory) and K-nearest neighbour were improved, by extracting more features that consider the spatial-temporal correlations of traffic flow and the influences of specific contextual factors to the traffic flow. Second, a fusion mechanism with dynamic weights was presented to optimise the mix predictor. A compensation term was added based on the deviations. Finally, the new method was tested using real data in Seattle, Washington. The results show that the proposed model predicts the flow for the next 5 min across the verification set, with a 6.42% mean absolute percentage error and 31.49 standard error. These results are more accurate and robust than those achieved with other state-of-the-art models.

Abstract:Short-term traffic flow prediction is important to realize real-time traffic instruction. However, due to the existing strong nonlinearity and non-stationarity in short-term traffic volume data, it is hard to obtain a satisfactory result through the traditional method. To this end, this paper develops an innovative hybrid method based on the time varying filtering based empirical mode decomposition (TVF-EMD) and least square support vector machine (LSSVM). Specifically, TVF-EMD is firstly used to deal with the implied non-stationarity in the original data by decomposing them into several different subseries. Then, the LSSVM models are established for each subseries to capture the linear and nonlinear characteristics embedded in the original data, and the corresponding prediction results are superimposed to obtain the final one. Finally, case studies based on two groups of data measured from an arterial road intersection are employed to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. The experimental results indicate it outperforms the other involved models. For example, compared with the LSSVM model, the average improvements by the proposed method in terms of the indexes of mean absolute error, mean relative percentage error, root mean square error and root mean square relative error are 7.397, 15.832%, 10.707 and 24.471%, respectively.

Abstract:Abstract Through the phase space reconstruction technology, it is proved that there are chaotic behaviors on highway ramp. The establishment of a traffic flow prediction model can also solve the impact of unexpected accidents or delayed management. Short term traffic flow prediction is also an important prerequisite for the intelligent traffic management system. The wavelet transforms neural network can be used to realize the short-term prediction of the traffic flow on the highway ramp.
Traffic Prediction considering Multiple Levels of Spatial-temporal Information: A Multi-scale Graph Wavelet-based Approach

Abstract:Although traffic prediction has been receiving considerable attention with a number of successes in the context of intelligent transportation systems, the prediction of traffic states over a complex transportation network that contains different road types has remained a challenge. This study proposes a multi-scale graph wavelet temporal convolution network (MSGWTCN) to predict the traffic states in complex transportation networks. Specifically, a multi-scale spatial block is designed to simultaneously capture the spatial information at different levels, and the gated temporal convolution network is employed to extract the temporal dependencies of the data. The model jointly learns to mount multiple levels of the spatial interactions by stacking graph wavelets with different scales. Two real-world datasets are used in this study to investigate the model performance, including a highway network in Seattle and a dense road network of Manhattan in New York City. Experiment results show that the proposed model outperforms other baseline models. Furthermore, different scales of graph wavelets are found to be effective in extracting local, intermediate and global information at the same time and thus enable the model to learn a complex transportation network topology with various types of road segments. By carefully customizing the scales of wavelets, the model is able to improve the prediction performance and better adapt to different network configurations.

Abstract:The real time forecast for short-term traffic flow is the foundation of urban traffic control and guidance, which is also one of main functions of intelligent transportation system. It's proved by studies that none of forecasting models can dominate the others in all situations. A intelligent forecasting system for short-term traffic flow is proposed and constituted in this paper, in which the intelligent model choice and combination of forecasting results given by different models are implemented based on the thought of intelligent and combining forecast. It's shown by simulations that the system has good adaptability to the change of environment and can improve the forecast veracity. Applying the multi-agent technique, this forecast system is constructed and the architecture and principle of such an intelligent forecast supported system based on multi-agent is also mentioned in this paper.
