Abstract:This paper addresses supervisor synthesis for discrete event systems modeled by controlled Petri nets. The considered control problem is to enforce a conjunction of generalized mutual exclusion constraint-, on a controlled Petri net where the influence uncontrollable subnets are joint-free nets. The properties of jointfree nets are proposed. The necessary and sufficient condition of the existence of the maximally permissive (optimal) supervisor is then obtained utilizing these properties. Furthermore, an algorithm is proposed to design the optimal supervisor with a complexity of polynomial times. The theoretic results are illustrated by an example of synthesizing the optimal supervisor for a manufacturing system.

Abstract:The forward-synchronization and forward-conflict free (FSFCF) net is a class of Petri nets in which each transition has exactly one input place and each place has at most one input transition. For a class of control problems where the control specification is a general mutual exclusion constraint and the uncontrollable influencing subnet is an FSFCF net, an expression is given to calculate the maximally permissible control policy. An example illustrates the theoretical results.

Abstract:More and more control elements are incorporated into a single system by the information technology such as internet of things.Consequently,the scale of a control system increases quickly,and the control specification becomes more and more complicated.Any logic mistake that violates a given control specification may lead to a serious industrial failure and even security issue.Besides,there is a"state space explosion"for discrete event systems.These make a challenge for designing and debugging programs running in programmable logic controllers(PLCs)or field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs).The supervisory control theory of discrete event systems is to implement a given complicated logic specification by formal methods. The specification such as interlock,sequence,mutual exclusion,and language is expressed by a Petri net or automata.It is in turn translated into codes that can be executed by a PLC or FPGA.This paper surveys these formal methods for synthesis of logical controller,which are to shorten the costed time for control programs,to ease the reuse of them,and to increase the safety and reliability of them.

Abstract:A quite great progress of the supervisory control theory for discrete event systems (DES) has been made in the past nearly twenty years, and now, automata, formal language and Petri nets become the main research tools. This paper focus on the Petri nets based supervisory control theory of DES. Firstly, we review the research results in this field, and claim that there generally exists a problem in Petri nets based supervisory control theory of DES, that is, the deadlock caused by the controller introduced to enforce the given specification occurs in the closed-loop systems, especially the deadlock occurs in the closed-loop system in which the original plant is live. Finally, a possible research direction is presented for the solution of this problem.

Abstract:A multivariable predictive functional control algorithm is presented,which is a branch of model predictive techniques family.It is deduced with the theory of predictive functional control and Smith predictor,and is the extension of single variable predictive functional control.A computer simulation case study for the control of Shell Oil's heavy oil fractionator is presented.The result displays that the presented multivariable predictive functional control algorithm is of better control performance than the single variable predictive functional control in the multivariable first order plus dead time system.

Abstract:SummaryThis paper addresses the problem of dissipativity‐based asynchronous control for a class of discrete‐time Markov jump systems. A unified framework to design a controller for discrete‐time Markov jump systems with mixed time delays is proposed, which is fairly general and can be reduced to a synchronous controller or a mode‐independent controller. Based on a stochastic Lyapunov function approach, which fully utilizes available information of the system mode and the controller, a sufficient condition is established to ensure the stochastic stability and strictly ( , , ) dissipative performance of the resulting closed‐loop system. Finally, the effectiveness and validity of the proposed method are illustrated with a simulation example.

Abstract:Due to the introduction of uncontrollable transitions in the supervisory control of discrete event systems modeled by controlled Petri nets, a disjunction of several linear inequalities is needed to express the admissible markings. In this paper, we propose a two level hierarchical control synthesis method to deal with this kind of OR logic constraints. In the method, the constraint function plays an important role not only in the construction of the low level monitor but also in the determination of the control policy. The obtained supervisor is maximally permissive and the online computation has the complexity of polynomial times. An example is used to illustrate the proposed synthesis algorithm.

Abstract:This paper investigates the problem of distributed nonblocking supervisory control for timed discrete-event systems (DESs). The distributed supervisors communicate with each other over networks subject to nondeterministic communication delays and losses. Given that the delays are counted by time, techniques have been developed to model the dynamics of the communication channels. By incorporating the dynamics of the communication channels into the system model, we construct a communication automaton to model the interaction process between the supervisors. Based on the communication automaton, we define the observation mappings for the supervisors, which consider delays and losses occurring in the communication channels. Then, we derive the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a set of supervisors for distributed nonblocking supervisory control. These conditions are expressed as network controllability, network joint observability, and system language closure. Finally, an example of intelligent manufacturing is provided to show the application of the proposed framework.

Abstract:The satisfactory predictive control for complex system is studied. By introducing commanding input and the membership degrees of the predictive output errors between the predictive outputs and their setpoints, the satisfactory predictive control algorithm is improved. Using the satisfactory control algorithm presented in this paper, it cannot only avoid the solving of Diophantine equation for calculating the predictive output, but also deal with the setpoint control problem and horizon control problem, while the hard constraints are guaranteed, the soft constraints and the output tracking are satisfied as much as possible. The simulation results verify the validity.

Abstract:Networked control systems (NCSs) is drawn a lot of attention recently. A new method is proposed in this paper, which involves the predictive control algorithm. A queuing strategy is presented for coping with the networked delay, so that NCSs can be stabilized and achieve quite a good dynamic performance for both linear and nonlinear plants. The advantages of this method are (1) no need to redesign the existed predictive controllers; (2) no requirement of clock synchronization; (3) only slight influence of bad network condition such as package loss. Simulations and experiments are designed to show these advantages

Abstract:The production state could not be predicativecontrolled in discrete production enterprises, and the task was delayed. Based on the model of predictive control, an objectoriented approach was adopted to model and simulate the discrete production system. The method of simulation-based predictive control for discrete production system state was proposed to predict and display the throughput, equipment utilization, etc., of the system intuitively, in order to actualize effective control for the system parameter such as product flow, equipment amount, and operation time. The applicationshows that the method could improve the management ofproduction in plants observably and ensure the task to beaccomplished on schedule.

Abstract:In the context of networked discrete-event systems (DESs), communication delays and losses exist between the plant and the supervisor for observation and between the supervisor and the actuator for control. In this paper, we first introduce a new framework for supervisory control of networked DESs. Under the introduced framework, we address the state estimation problem for supervisor synthesis of networked DESs with both communication delays and losses. The estimation algorithm considers the effect of the controls imposed on the system. Additionally, the estimation algorithm is based on the control decisions available up to the moment, and all the future control decisions are assumed to be unknowable. Two notions, called “observation channel configuration” for tracking observation delays and losses and “control channel configuration” for tracking control delays and losses, are defined. Then, we introduce an online approach for state estimation of the controlled system. Compared with the existing approach, the proposed approach under the introduced framework can estimate the states of the controlled system more accurately. As an application of the proposed approach, we finally show that the existing methods can be applied to synthesize maximally permissible and safe networked supervisors.

Abstract:Conventional supervisory control theory assumes full synchronization between the supervisor and the plant. This assumption is violated in a networked-based communication setting due to the presence of delays, and this may result in incorrect behavior of a supervisor obtained from conventional supervisory control theory. This paper presents a technique to synthesize a networked supervisor handling communication delays. For this purpose, first, a networked supervisory control framework is provided, where the supervisor interacts with the plant through control and observation channels, both of which introduce delays. The control channel is FIFO, but the observation channel is assumed to be non-FIFO so that the observation of events may not necessarily be received by the supervisor in the same order as they occurred in the plant. It is assumed that a global clock exists in the networked control system, and so the communication delays are represented in terms of time. Based on the proposed framework, a networked plant automaton is achieved, which models the behavior of the plant under the effects of communication delays and disordered observations. Based on the networked plant, the networked supervisor is synthesized, which is guaranteed to be (timed networked) controllable, nonblocking, time-lock free, (timed networked) maximally permissive, and satisfies control requirements for the plant.

Abstract:Supervisory control belongs essentially to the logic level for control problems in discrete event systems (DESs) and its corresponding control task is hard. This is unlike many practical optimal control problems which belong to the performance level and whose control tasks are soft. In this paper, we present two new optimal control problems of DESs: one with cost functions for choosing control inputs, and the other for occurring events. Their performance measures are to minimize the maximal discounted total cost among all possible strings that the system generates. Since this is a nonlinear optimization problem, we model such systems by using Markov decision processes. We then present the optimality equations for both control problems and obtain their optimal solutions. When the cost functions are stationary, we show that both the optimality equations and their solutions are also stationary. We then use these equations and solutions to describe and solve uniformly the basic synthesizing problems in the two branches of the supervisory control area: those being the event feedback control and the state feedback control. Moreover, we show that the control invariant languages and the control invariant predicates with their permissive supervisors and state feedbacks not only have meanings in supervisory control of DESs, but are also the optimal solutions for some optimal control problems. This shows a link existing between the logic level and the performance level for the control of discrete event systems. Finally, a numerical example is given to illustrate some results for supervisory control of a DES.

Abstract:Due to the appearance of uncontrollable events in discrete event systems, one may wish to replace the behavior leading to the uncontrollability of pre-specified language by some quite similar one. To capture this similarity, we introduce metric to traditional supervisory control theory and generalize the concept of original controllability to $\ld$-controllability, where $\ld$ indicates the similarity degree of two languages. A necessary and sufficient condition for a language to be $\ld$-controllable is provided. We then examine some properties of $\ld$-controllable languages and present an approach to optimizing a realization.

On scalable supervisory control of multi-agent discrete-event systems

Abstract:In this paper we study multi-agent discrete-event systems where the agents can be divided into several groups, and within each group the agents have similar or identical state transition structures. We employ a relabeling map to generate a "template structure" for each group, and synthesize a scalable supervisor whose state size and computational process are independent of the number of agents. This scalability allows the supervisor to remain invariant (no recomputation or reconfiguration needed) if and when there are agents removed due to failure or added for increasing productivity. The constant computational effort for synthesizing the scalable supervisor also makes our method promising for handling large-scale multi-agent systems. Moreover, based on the scalable supervisor we design scalable local controllers, one for each component agent, to establish a purely distributed control architecture.

Abstract:With the developments of wireless data communication and network technology, time-delays are widely found in nowadays' control systems, e.g. networked control systems, mobile robot systems, and multi-agent systems. Predictor-based control is an effective method dealing with long time-delays because it can generally lead to a delay-free closed-loop system by introducing a prediction for future states. Recently, various predictor-based control methods have been developed for numerous control systems subject to different time-delays, which motivates this survey. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the up-to-date results on the predictor-based control of time-delay systems. Firstly, the ordinary differential equation-based approaches for designing and analysing predictor-based controllers are summarised. Secondly, one reports an alternative method of predictor-based control, in which the systems/controllers are understood in the sense of partial differential equations. Next, several integration-free predictor-based controllers are introduced: by abandoning the infinite-dimensional integral terms, the control laws become easier to realise in practice. Hereafter, the paper discusses the real-time implementations and the practical applications of predictor-based control methods to several particular control systems. Finally, this paper suggests some new trends of predictor-based control for future research.
