Abstract:In work done jointly with Toby Walsh, the author has provided a sound theoretical foundation to the process of reasoning with abstraction (GW90c, GWS9, GW9Ob, GW90a). The notion of abstraction formalized in this work can be informally described as: (property 1), the process of mapping a representation of a problem, called (following historical convention (Sac74)) the 'ground' representation, onto a new representation, called the 'abstract' representation, which, (property 2) helps deal with the problem in the original search space by preserving certain desirable properties and (property 3) is simpler to handle as it is constructed from the ground representation by throwing away details. One desirable property preserved by an abstraction is provability; often there is a relationship between provability in the ground representation and provability in the abstract representation. Another can be deduction or, possibly inconsistency. By 'throwing away details' we usually mean that the problem is described in a language with a smaller search space (for instance a propositional language or a language without variables) in which formulae of the abstract representation are obtained from the formulae of the ground representation by the use of some terminating rewriting technique. Often we require that the use of abstraction results in more efficient .reasoning. However, it might simply increase the number of facts asserted (eg. by allowing, in practice, the exploration of deeper search spaces or by implementing some form of learning). Among all abstractions, three very important classes have been identified. They relate the set of facts provable in the ground space to those provable in the abstract space. We call: TI abstractions all those abstractions where the abstractions of all the provable facts of the ground space are provable in the abstract space; TD abstractions all those abstractions wllere the 'unabstractions' of all the provable facts of the abstract space are provable in the ground space; and TC abstractions all those abstractions where a fact is provable in the ground space if and only if its abstraction is provable in the abstract space.

Abstract:Korf Korf, 1979] provides a similar computational analysis of the beneets of abstraction for state space search. This analysis is essentially restricted to Abstrips abstractions as it ignores the cost of building abstract proof plans. Like us, Korf assumes no mapping failures, and a constant branching rate. Finally, in Giunchiglia & Walsh, 1989b] we analysed the theoretical and empirical properties of using a propositional abstraction to determine which deenitions to unfold in a proof. However, we did not exploit most of the information in the structure of the abstract proof, only the sequence of deenitions that were unfolded. 8 CONCLUSIONS We have used our theory of abstraction to consider the problem of how an abstract proof can be \mapped back" onto a proof of the original theorem. This analysis has naturally suggested the architecture of a general purpose abstract theorem prover. We have implemented this theorem prover, and begun to investigate its properties. Its behaviour agrees with a simple computational model we have devised for calculating the beneets of abstraction. Abstract:We present a novel approach for generalizing the IC3 algorithm for invariant checking from finite-state to infinite-state transition systems, expressed over some background theories. The procedure is based on a tight integration of IC3 with Implicit (predicate) Abstraction, a technique that expresses abstract tran- sitions without computing explicitly the abstract system and is incremental with respect to the addition of predicates. In this scenario, IC3 operates only at the Boolean level of the abstract state space, discovering inductive clauses over the abstraction predicates. Theory reasoning is confined within the underlying SMT solver, and applied transparently when performing satisfiability checks. When the current abstraction allows for a spurious counterexample, it is refined by discov- ering and adding a sufficient set of new predicates. Importantly, this can be done in a completely incremental manner, without discarding the clauses found in the previous search. The proposed approach has two key advantages. First, unlike current SMT gener- alizations of IC3, it allows to handle a wide range of background theories without relying on ad-hoc extensions, such as quantifier elimination or theory-specific clause generalization procedures, which might not always be available, and can moreover be inefficient. Second, compared to a direct exploration of the concrete transition system, the use of abstraction gives a significant performance improve- ment, as our experiments demonstrate.

Abstract:Inspired by Bayesian approaches to brain function in neuroscience, we give a simple theory of probabilistic inference for a unified account of reasoning and learning. We simply model how data cause symbolic knowledge in terms of its satisfiability in formal logic. The underlying idea is that reasoning is a process of deriving symbolic knowledge from data via abstraction, i.e., selective ignorance. The logical consequence relation is discussed for its proof-based theoretical correctness. The MNIST dataset is discussed for its experiment-based empirical correctness.

Abstract:Abstraction is a fundamental tool for reasoning about complex systems. Program abstraction has been utilized to great effect for analyzing deterministic programs. At the heart of program abstraction is the relationship between a concrete program, which is difficult to analyze, and an abstract program, which is more tractable. Program abstractions, however, are typically not probabilistic. We generalize non-deterministic program abstractions to probabilistic program abstractions by explicitly quantifying the non-deterministic choices. Our framework upgrades key definitions and properties of abstractions to the probabilistic context. We also discuss preliminary ideas for performing inference on probabilistic abstractions and general probabilistic programs.

Abstract:Abstraction is key to human and artificial intelligence as it allows one to see common structure in otherwise distinct objects or situations and as such it is a key element for generality in AI. Anti-unification (or generalization) is \textit{the} part of theoretical computer science and AI studying abstraction. It has been successfully applied to various AI-related problems, most importantly inductive logic programming. Up to this date, anti-unification is studied only from a syntactic perspective in the literature. The purpose of this paper is to initiate an algebraic (i.e. semantic) theory of anti-unification within general algebras. This is motivated by recent applications to similarity and analogical proportions.

Abstract:The goal of this paper is to propose a model-theoretic formalization of abstraction, where abstraction is modeled as two representations, the ground and the abstract representation, modeling the same phenomenon at different levels of detail. Using the framework of Local Models Semantics, the ground and abstract representations are modeled as two sets of (local) first order models, while the relations holding between them are captured by an appropriate "compatibility relation". The tuning of the compatibility relation allows for the definition of the many different kinds of abstraction.

Abstract:There has been a gap between artificial intelligence and human intelligence. In this paper, we identify three key elements forming human intelligence, and suggest that abstraction learning combines these elements and is thus a way to bridge the gap. Prior researches in artificial intelligence either specify abstraction by human experts, or take abstraction as a qualitative explanation for the model. This paper aims to learn abstraction directly. We tackle three main challenges: representation, objective function, and learning algorithm. Specifically, we propose a partition structure that contains pre-allocated abstraction neurons; we formulate abstraction learning as a constrained optimization problem, which integrates abstraction properties; we develop a network evolution algorithm to solve this problem. This complete framework is named ONE (Optimization via Network Evolution). In our experiments on MNIST, ONE shows elementary human-like intelligence, including low energy consumption, knowledge sharing, and lifelong learning.

Abstract:Up-to techniques' represent enhancements of the coinduction proof method and are widely used on coinductive behavioural relations such as bisimilarity. Abstract formulations of these coinductive techniques exist, using fixed-points or category theory. A proposal has been recently put forward for transporting the enhancements onto the concrete realms of inductive behavioural relations, i.e., relations defined from inductive observables, such as traces or enriched forms of traces. The abstract meaning of such 'inductive enhancements', however, has not been explored. In this paper, we review the theory, and then propose an abstract account of it, using fixed-point theory in complete lattices.

Abstract:Reinforcement learning defines the problem facing agents that learn to make good decisions through action and observation alone. To be effective problem solvers, such agents must efficiently explore vast worlds, assign credit from delayed feedback, and generalize to new experiences, all while making use of limited data, computational resources, and perceptual bandwidth. Abstraction is essential to all of these endeavors. Through abstraction, agents can form concise models of their environment that support the many practices required of a rational, adaptive decision maker. In this dissertation, I present a theory of abstraction in reinforcement learning. I first offer three desiderata for functions that carry out the process of abstraction: they should 1) preserve representation of near-optimal behavior, 2) be learned and constructed efficiently, and 3) lower planning or learning time. I then present a suite of new algorithms and analysis that clarify how agents can learn to abstract according to these desiderata. Collectively, these results provide a partial path toward the discovery and use of abstraction that minimizes the complexity of effective reinforcement learning.

Abstract:Inspired by empirical work in neuroscience for Bayesian approaches to brain function, we give a unified probabilistic account of various types of symbolic reasoning from data. We characterise them in terms of formal logic using the classical consequence relation, an empirical consequence relation, maximal consistent sets, maximal possible sets and maximum likelihood estimation. The theory gives new insights into reasoning towards human-like machine intelligence.

Abstract:Conceptual abstraction and analogy-making are key abilities underlying humans' abilities to learn, reason, and robustly adapt their knowledge to new domains. Despite of a long history of research on constructing AI systems with these abilities, no current AI system is anywhere close to a capability of forming humanlike abstractions or analogies. This paper reviews the advantages and limitations of several approaches toward this goal, including symbolic methods, deep learning, and probabilistic program induction. The paper concludes with several proposals for designing challenge tasks and evaluation measures in order to make quantifiable and generalizable progress in this area.
