Abstract:For large-scale power system simulation in the electromagnetic transient mode, it is necessary to reduce greatly the power system in size. A novel dynamic reduction approach suitable for large-scale AC/DC power systems is proposed in this paper. The approach retains the trunk network (i.e., buses and their connecting lines at the 500kV voltage level) and other important components (e.g., HVDC links), and reduces the separate local lower voltage network connected to each 500kV bus. Under the assumption that the generators within each separate local lower voltage network are in coherency, the separate local lower voltage network is replaced by an equivalent generator paralleled with a load and a fixed shunt according to the coherency-based equivalent method. On the other hand, the interaction phenomena between the AC and DC systems are greatly influenced by two factors: the strength of the AC system (i.e., the short circuit current level) and the sudden voltage dips caused by AC faults. Hence, the parameters of the reduced network are calculated in such a way that the above two factors are kept unchanged in the reduction process. The proposed dynamic reduction approach has been applied to the China southern power grid (CSG). Simulation results show that the equivalent system of the CSG can represent the dynamic characteristics of the original system very well.
