Abstract:A tri-frequency relativistic backward wave oscillator (RBWO) with resonant reflector has been designed and analyzed in the paper. The simulation results show that the three frequency microwave output (7.6GHz, 8.4GHz and 9.2 GHz) with the device can be produced synchronously.

Abstract:The two novel types of resonant reflector with dissymmetric structures were developed as the high power multi-frequency output, and used in the design of the multi-frequency coaxial relativistic backward wave oscillator (CRBWO), respectively. The newly-developed reflectors were calculated with 2.5-dimension particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation code CHIPIC. The simulated results show that the dual frequency CRBWO, equipped with the two types of resonant reflector, generated stable dual frequency output in the X-band, outperforming the conventional counterparts when it comes to the stability of the operating voltage and magnetic field. Moreover, with an electron beam of 480 keV, 7.5 kA, and guided by a magnetic field of 2.7 T, the CRBWO equipped with the 2nd type of the newly-developed reflector produced stable multi-frequency (three-, and four-frequency) output with the standing wave conversion efficiencies of 15.3% and 13.9%, respectively, which are much higher than those of the conventional multi-frequency, high power microwave devices.

Abstract:A 220GHz relativistic backward wave oscillator(RBWO) is studied in this paper. This model consists of four parts, including slow wave structure(SWS), the cathode, the resonant reflector and the output waveguide. The single-grating rectangular waveguide is selected as the SWS. Through dispersion characteristics of the SWS, and the transmission characteristics of the resonant reflector and the output structure, the basic dimensions of the RWBO are determined. Then by means of particle-in-cell simulation, a stable output power of 18MW at 220GHz is obtained.

Abstract:An X-band dual-frequency coaxial relativistic backward-wave oscillator with a modulating resonant reflector is presented and investigated in this paper. Through a theoretical study, numerical analysis and particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation, the stationary single-frequency regime is selected as the operation regime, and the high-frequency characteristics of the system, including the unstable beam–wave interaction regions and operation mode of each section, are obtained. The PIC simulation results indicate that an average power of 1.07 GW with a power conversion efficiency of 24.2% is obtained with an electron beam of 520 kV and 8.5 kA guided by an axial magnetic field of 2.4 T, and the two dominant frequencies are 9.43 and 10.30 GHz, respectively. Furthermore, a periodic-like change in the smaller dominant frequency with a frequency agility bandwidth of about 0.40 GHz is acquired.

Abstract:An C-band and X-band dual-frequency coaxial relativistic backward-wave oscillator(CRBWO) with a resonant reflector and a single annular electron beam is designed and investigated with 2.5-D particle-in-cell(PIC) simulation code in this paper.The PIC simulation results indicate that,with an electron beam of 510 kV and 9.03 kA guided by an axial magnetic field of 0.73 T,an average power of 0.95 GW with power conversion efficiency of 20.6% is obtained and the two dominant frequencies are 8.1 GHz and 9.9 GHz,respectively.The efficiency is higher than dual-band non-coaxial RBWO and dual-band magnetically insulated line oscillator.

Abstract:A dual-band coaxial relativistic backward wave oscillator (RBWO) with two sets of different period of slow-wave structure (SWS) was presented and investigated in this paper. The nonlinear beam-wave interactions were analyzed and simulated with the 2.5-dimensional electromagnetic particle-in-cell (PIC) code. With electron beams of 400 kV and 17.1 kA guided by a magnetic field of 0.77 Tesla, an average power of 0.52 GW with a power conversion efficiency of 7.5% is obtained and the band frequencies are 12.3 GHz and 13.0 GHz, respectively.

Abstract:An idea of azimuthally dividing the slow wave structure (SWS) of a relativistic backward wave oscillator (RBWO) into two parts is introduced to realize a bifrequency oscillation. To enhance the stability of this device, two sectorial waveguides are inserted into the SWS specially. The synchronization condition that is necessary to get a sustainable microwave output is derived. In Particle in cell simulation, bifrequency microwave at frequencies of 9.7 GHz and 9.87 GHz is generated with average power of 0.66 GW, conversion efficiency is 15.8% when beam voltage is 520 kV and current 8 kA. Abstract:In this paper, a 220GHz relativistic backward wave oscillator (RBWO) with phase velocity taper is studied. The RBWO with phase velocity taper consists of five parts, including two parts of slow wave structures (SWS) which have different dispersion characteristics, the cathode, the resonant reflector and the output waveguide. The single-grating rectangular waveguide is selected as the SWS. Based on an RBWO without phase velocity taper, another part of SWS with different dispersion characteristic is added to build an RBWO with phase velocity taper. With the phase velocity taper, the output power of RBWO achieves 9.68MW at 220GHz, which increases 20% by the RBWO without phase velocity taper.

Abstract:A dual-band high-efficiency coaxial relativistic backward wave oscillator (CRBWO) with asymmetric resonant reflector is designed and presented in this paper. Improved sectioned coaxial slow wave structure (SWS) with stepwise variation of coupling impedance and phase velocity is employed, and the performance of the dual-band CRBWO is investigated by use of a 2.5-D particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation code. When the diode voltage is 510 kV and beam current is 9.03 kA, an average microwave power of 1.0 GW with power conversion efficiency of 21.7% is obtained. Synchronously radiating dual-band frequencies of 8.1 GHz and 9.9 GHz are obtained, corresponding to C-band and X-band, respectively. A more clear and stable beating radiation microwave power with beating frequency of 1.8 GHz is acquired.

Abstract:Two and one half dimensional simulation code of electromagnetic relativistic particle-in-cell has been used to investigate the nonlinear beam-wave interaction and other optimization issues of a 3 cm relativistic backward wave oscillator. The power electron beam voltage, electron beam current, slow wave structure geometry and magnetic guide field were simulated. The dependence of the optimum conditions for the device were obtained. the results are in agreement with experiment data.

Abstract:The design and experimental demonstration of an X-band coaxial dual-frequency relativistic backward wave oscillator (CRBWO) with sectioned slow wave structures (SWSs) is presented. In this paper, we describe the experimental measurement methods of frequency, power and operation mode for the high-power microwave signal. In experimental tests, with a 500 kV, 11.5 kA beam guided by a 0.82 T magnetic field, a microwave with an average power of 507 MW and pulsewidth of 50 ns has been obtained. Also, the dominant frequencies of the X-band dual frequency are 9.845 GHz and 10.517 GHz, and the dual-frequency difference Δ ≈ 672 MHz, which was similar to the particle-in-cell simulation results. The operation mode of the device is determined to be TM 01 mode in our experiment.

Abstract:An X-band dual-frequency coaxial relativistic backward-wave oscillator (CRBWO) with sectioned slow-wave structures (SWSs) is presented and investigated in this paper. The PIC simulation results indicate that, with an electron beam of 500 kV and 8.7 kA guided by an axial magnetic field of 0.82 T, average power of 700 MW with power conversion efficiency up to 16.1% is obtained, and the two dominant frequencies are 10.06 and 10.49 GHz, respectively. Theoretical analysis indicates that the operation modes of the two sections are TM01 modes.

Abstract:A theoretical research was developed for relativistic backward wave oscillators(RBWO) composed of a thin annular electron beam guided by a strong magnetic field through a slow wave structure(SWS) consisting of a cylindrical waveguide with a sinusoidally varying wall radius.Firstly,the analytic expressions of dispersion relations were derived from Swegle's analytic theory of RBWO.Then one code written by Matlab was used to solve the dispersion equations.Through drawing contour lines in the complex plane,the whole dispersion curves of SWS with electron beams were obtained and detailed study on the region of instable beam-wave interaction was carried out.The microwave growth rate and energy efficiency were calculated too.The simulation results illustrate that this interaction,which leads to microwave growth,occurs between the SBSCW and the electromagnetic wave when α(parameter of electron beams) is large,and there is obvious three-wave effect when α is a bit small.The microwave growth rate has the maximal value of 1.37,and the energy efficiency is 19% when α is 0.02.Beam-wave interaction will be intensified when the electron current,the beam radius or the depth of rippled wall increases.

Abstract:An X-band superradiant relativistic backward wave oscillator (SR-RBWO) using a structure combining resonant reflector and coupling gap is designed in this paper. This structure can realize the spatial mode coupling from coaxial waveguide TEM mode to TM 01 mode in circular waveguide, and in output circular waveguide, a plate-insert TM01- TE 11 mode converter is introduced. Finally, the superradiant (SR) microwave can directly output with radiation mode $\text{TE}_{11}$ in circular waveguide. The particle in cell (PIC) simulation results reval that when this structure applied with a low guiding magnetic field 0.37 T, SR pulse with peak power 1.05 GW corresponding to power conversion efficiency 180% can be obtained.

Abstract:An X-band large diameter coaxial relativistic backward wave aseillator (CRBWO) was prasented and designed in the paper. The complete dispersion relation and coupling impedance of TMon mode in the coaxial corrugated cylindrical waveguide used in the CRBWO were analyzed and calculated by FDTD method. An electromannetic particle-in-cell codeis being used to investigate the nonlinear beam wave interaction and perfonnance optimization issues of the device. The simulation results show that the CRBWO can generate GW level microwve power at X-band frequency very efficiently.

Abstract:This paper studies the issues about the X-band super-radiance from a relativistic backward wave oscillator (RBWO) with the central frequency of 9.25 GHz, and the output port of the RBWO is directly connected to a vlasov antenna. The particle simulation code UNIPIC and the self-developed antenna simulation code are combined to simulate the full process of the generation and the radiation of the microwave pulse. Effects of natural gas at difference pressures and injected voltage pulse on the working characteristics of RBWO are simulated and discussed. Simulated results indicate that the peak value of the output power can achieve 3.68 GW, and the instantaneous efficiency can exceed 100%. When the tilted angle of vlasov antenna is 20 degrees, the gain of the antenna is 15.5 dB. The power density can reach 0.728 W/cm2 at the far distance of 1 km. ? Chinese Physical Society.

Abstract:Relativistic backward wave oscillators (RBWOs) have the characteristics of high power and high repetition rate. Reducing the magnetic field strength and the weight of the external permanent magnet (PM) is a significant development direction of RBWOs. In previous research, an X-band RBWO enclosed with a PM has achieved a power efficiency of 50%. However, the PM used in these papers requires a magnetic field magnitude of over 0.68 T, which leads to a weight exceeding 400 kg. The RBWO designed in this paper operates in coaxial TM01 mode, and the radial distance between its cathode and the surface of the slow wave structures reaches 7 mm. Under the condition of a low magnetic field, this design can provide a wide electron beam channel to avoid the rubbing of the electron beam envelope on the inner and outer conductors. Particle-in-cell simulation results have demonstrated that this RBWO achieves an output microwave power of 3 GW with a power efficiency of 50% enclosed in a PM with a magnetic field strength of 0.43 T and a weight of 74 kg.

Abstract:A new reflector consisting of the inner and outer conductors is introduced into the coaxial relativistic backward wave oscillator for the first time through optimizing the distribution of the electric field and distance between the reflector and the slow wave structure. The improved reflector can excite the superposition of the axial electric fields to benefit the electron premodulation. The improved reflector is investigated by the particle-in-cell numerical simulation. A result of 43% power efficiency, 1.0-GW power, and 7.3-GHz operation frequency is obtained under the diode voltage 530 kV and current 4.4 kA.

Abstract:It is reported on the design and experiment of a dual-mode (TM01-TM02) relativistic backward wave oscillator (RBWO) with a beam filtering ring (BFR) packaged with permanent magnet. The BFR makes use of the large transverse oscillation of electrons at low magnetic field. By absorbing part of the electron beam periodically, the amount of the electrons that would absorb power from the microwave in the slow-wave structure (SWS) is greatly reduced, so the beam-wave conversion efficiency is improved. Experimental results demonstrate that a 3.2 GW mixed-modes microwave at 9.87 GHz with an efficiency of 40% is obtained with a 675 kV, 11.8 kA beam guided by a 0.68 T magnetic field. The BFR has a considerable lifetime and can effectively improve the efficiency of the device with stable operation.

Abstract:An X-band klystron-like relativistic backward wave oscillator (RBWO) has been designed and studied for its efficiency enhancement by implementing triple extraction and dual modulation cavities. The proposed dual modulation cavities klystron-like RBWO have been modeled in a finite-difference time-domain (FDTD)-based particle-in-cell (PIC) code to illustrate its beam–wave interaction behavior and to study the effect upon the fundamental harmonic current and growth of axial electric field. The PIC simulation of klystron-like RBWO operating at the magnetic field of $\sim$ 2.9 T predicted an RF output power $\sim$ 2.79 GW with operating frequency $\sim$ 9.5 GHz and the power conversion efficiency $\sim$ 73% without the shortening of the pulse up to $\sim$ 300 ns of simulation time.
