Abstract:In this communication, a wideband reconfigurable reflectarray based on reflector-backed active second-order bandpass frequency selective surface (FSS) is presented. The reflector is composed of periodic short-circuited parallel plate waveguide (PPW) and the FSS is composed of stacked non-resonant metallic elements separated by thin dielectric substrates. By integrating microwave varactors in the capacitive layers of FSS, more than 270 o continuous phase tunability is achieved within a factional bandwidth of 14%. A one-dimensional reflectarray prototype operating at C band is fabricated and measured. The experimental results show that it can achieve ±55 o beam scanning coverage. Symmetric beam steering is observed due to the center-fed configuration. With advantages of low cost and simple structure, the proposed reflectarray can be potentially used in wideband wireless communication and radar systems.

Abstract:This paper investigates the feasibility of designing reflectarray antennas on conformal surfaces. A generalized analysis approach is presented that can be applied to compute the radiation performance of conformal reflectarray antennas. Using this approach, radiation characteristics of conformal reflectarray antennas on singly curved platforms are studied and the performances of these designs are compared with planar designs. It is demonstrated that a conformal reflectarray antenna can be a suitable choice for applications requiring high-gain antennas on curved platforms.

Abstract:A practical implementation of wideband and wide-scanning cylindrically conformal phased array is presented in this communication. First, the design of a dual-polarized planar array is introduced in advance. Then, as a preliminary performance investigation of a conformal phased array, a single-polarized array element counterpart is developed from the dual-polarized planar array with simple modifications. Finally, a conformal array is implemented using the 8 x 8 single-polarized radiating elements that are axially mounted onto a cylindrical surface with a radius of 150 mm. A conformal array prototype is fabricated and measured. The experimental results demonstrate that the array achieves active VSWR less than 3.0 over a bandwidth of 6-18 GHz (3:1), within a wide-scanning range of +/- 60 degrees in two principal planes. The measured results are in good accordance with the simulations, thus validating the performances of the proposed wideband and wide-scanning cylindrically conformal phased array.

Abstract:In this paper, a wide-scanning linear conformal phased array is presented. The antenna element is mainly composed of a dipole, a Marchand balun, a shorting-pin, two directors and frequency selective surface (FSS) structure. Besides, the proposed array is implemented using the 1×12 radiating elements that are mounted onto a curved wing surface. Simulated results show that the array can achieve VSWR less than 3.0 over 20% bandwidth, within a wide-scanning range of ±60° in E plane. In addition, the array has a gain reduction of less than 0.86dBi when scanning to ±60° in the horizontal direction.

Abstract:In this paper, dielectric reflectarray antennas mounted on cylindrical surfaces are designed, analyzed, and simulated for conformal high-gain antenna applications at sub-millimeter wave regime. Both convex and concave surfaces with different curvature are investigated, and the radiation performances, such as gains, bandwidth and radiation patterns, of these conformal reflectarrays, are compared with planar designs. The radiation performances are verified numerically through the full-wave simulations.

Abstract:A new surface integral equation formulation is presented for characterizing electromagnetic radiation by conformal microstrip arrays on finite curved bodies of arbitrary shapes. The surface equivalence principle is used to reduce the original problem to two equivalent problems, one for the external medium and another for the internal medium. Electric field integral equations are applied to the conducting surfaces, and weighted sums of the field integral equations corresponding to the external and internal dielectric regions with appropriate weighted coefficients are applied to the dielectric interface. The integral equations are solved via the method of moments (MoM) procedure, to which the memory requirement and computational complexity pertinent is reduced by employing the adaptive integral method (AIM). Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the validity and accuracy of the method.
Design and Implementation of Ultra-Wideband Dual-Polarized Conformal Phased Array

Abstract:This letter presents an innovative design and implementation method for an ultra-wideband dual-polarized conformal phased array. The performance of single-layer continuous dipoles under bending conditions is evaluated through characteristic mode analysis to understand the impact of curvature on operational stability. This analysis provides design insights into the maximum allowable curvature while maintaining stable dipole performance. Subsequently, a single-layer metal radiation structure is designed as the array element, and simulations indicate that it supports ultra-wideband operation with dual polarizations. Using this element, an 8 * 8 ultra-wideband dual-polarized cylindrical-conformal array (UDCA) is developed, demonstrating stable performance even at a curvature radius as small as 100 mm. A physical prototype is fabricated cost-effectively using novel manufacturing techniques that stack a three-layer conformal substrate. Experimental result demonstrates that the proposed UDCA with a 1.2{\lambda} curvature radius operates at 3.6~9.6 GHz (90.9%) and achieves 60° wide-scanning in E-/H-planes, which provides a practical and promising solution for conformal array applications.

Abstract:A practical implementation of low-scattering and ultra-wideband conformal arrays is presented in this paper, where the proposed array is completely attached to the curved surface of a wing platform. The designed array enables to operate in the band of 0.5 — 2.0 GHz when scanning up to 0° and ±45°. As compared to the reference metal ground, the scattering of the proposed array is significantly reduced covering the band from 6.0 to 18.0 GHz. The profile height of the proposed conformal array is only about $0.31\ \lambda_{\text{high}}$ .

Abstract:A wideband dual-polarized conformal phased array based on tightly coupled dipoles with 3:1 bandwidth is presented. Previous studies on wideband phased arrays are mainly focused on tightly coupled dipoles planar arrays. This paper reports a dual-polarized, tightly-coupled dipole 2D conformal phased array, which has much more preponderance in application. The conformal array employs a wide-angle impedance matching layer (WAIM). The simulated finite conformal array demonstrates broadside VSWR <; 2 across a 3:1 bandwidth, and VSWR <; 2.3 for a 3:1 bandwidth while scanning up to 60°, with cross polarization levels <; -20dB, in all planes. The array height, including the WAIM, is 0.14 wavelength above the ground plane, at the lowest operational frequency, and 0.41 wavelength at the highest frequency.

Abstract:Conformal antenna arrays become more popular on aircraft owing to significant improvement of aerodynamic and stealth performance. Since the interaction between the platform and the antenna array matters in the simulation results and their meshing produces a large matrix, the analysis of conformal array is computationally expensive. In this article, an efficient method is proposed for the analysis of arbitrary conformal array on cylindrical surface. A periodic Green's function combined with the method of moments (MoMs) enables efficient analysis with one unit cell. In addition, the Rao–Wilton–Glisson (RWG) basis function is adopted to describe the surface current of arbitrarily shaped array element. Cylindrical periodic Green's function (CPGF) is calculated by Wynn's -algorithm to improve the convergence, and a modified sampling procedure is developed for the RWG basis and weighted functions in the MoM. Key metrics of conformal array, such as the reflection coefficient, mutual coupling, and radiation pattern, are efficiently evaluated by the proposed method. The influences of conformal curvature and element interval are studied, indicating that the interval is a more important factor affecting the near-field characteristics. This method and conclusions can assist the design of various cylindrical conformal arrays.

Wideband Conformal Transmitarray Employing Tightly Coupled Huygens Element at E Band

Abstract:A new method to achieve wideband conformal transmitarrays is presented by employing tightly coupled Huygens element in this paper. The element is composed of five pairs of metallic strips which are printed on two sides of a dielectric substrate. The tightly coupled elements can achieve a high transmission and a nearly full phase coverage in a wide bandwidth from 71 to 87 GHz. To further analyze the element, equivalent circuit models are developed. Good agreement is achieved between circuit and full-wave simulations. A cylindrical conformal transmitarray at 78 GHz is designed, fabricated and measured. The measured results have good agreement with the simulated ones. The measured peak realized gain is 26.6 dBi with an aperture efficiency of 37.2%. The measured 3-dB gain bandwidth is 20.4% from 71 to 87 GHz, which can fully cover the E-band spectrum.

Abstract:We report the first conformal ultrawideband (UWB) array on a doubly curved surface for wide-angle electronic scanning. We use a quadrilateral mesh as the basis for systematically arraying UWB radiators on arbitrary surfaces. A prototype consisting of a 52-element, dual-polarized Vivaldi array arranged over a 181 mm diameter hemisphere is developed. The antennas and SMP connectors are 3-D printed out of titanium to allow for simple fabrication and assembly. We derive the theoretical gain of a hemispherical array based on the antenna size and number of elements. The measured realized gain of the prototype array is within 2 dB of the theoretical value from 2 to 18 GHz and scan angles out to 120° from the -axis. This field of view is twice that of a planar array with the same diameter in agreement with theory. This work provides a baseline performance for larger conformal arrays that have more uniform meshes. Furthermore, the basic concept can be extended to other UWB radiating elements.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the influence of the radius of a cylindrical supporting structure on radiation properties of a conformal millimeter-wave antenna array. Bent antenna array structures on cylindrical surfaces may have important applications in future mobile devices. Small radii may be needed if the antenna is printed on the edges of mobile devices and in items which human beings are wearing, such as wrist watches, bracelets, and rings. The antenna under study consists of four linear series-fed arrays of four patch elements and is operating at 58.8 GHz with linear polarization. The antenna array is fabricated on polytetrafluoroethylene substrate with thickness of 127 μm due to its good plasticity properties, and low losses. Results for both planar and conformal antenna arrays show rather good agreement between simulation and measurements. The results show that conformal antenna structures allow achieving large angular coverage and may allow beam-steering implementations if switches are used to select between different arrays around a cylindrical supporting structure.

Abstract:A dipole with four branches, fed by Marchand balun, is designed to be conformal with wing of an unmanned aerial vehicle. With the help of branches, the proposed dipole element achieves a better impedance matching performance. Meanwhile, the metallic coupled strip is added to move the scanning blindness out of the operating frequency band, without deterioration at broadside radiation. Besides, the beamwidth in the vertical plane, i.e., the H-plane of the dipole, can be effectively compressed by loading three metallic strip directors, and the element gain increases as well. Based on the dipole element, a 12-element linear phased array is designed and simulated. The simulated results show that the array achieves ±60° scanning range in the horizontal plane, with the voltage standing wave ratio lower than 2.5 in the operating band of 2.4∼3 GHz. Moreover, the 3 dB beamwidth in the H-plane is 81° at the center frequency of 2.7 GHz. The measured results of the fabricated antenna prototype agree reasonably well with the simulated ones, which verify the feasibility of the wing-conformal linear phased array design.

Abstract:This letter presents a reflectarray antenna composed of a combination of concentric open rings and an I-shaped dipole on a conductor-backed substrate. Two classes of elements with different variable dimensional parameters are introduced to realize linear phase-frequency characteristic in a wide frequency band and a phase range of over 360° . It is worth noting that the wideband performance is figured by the proposed reflectarray with a low profile of 0.065λ0 ( λ0 is the free-space wavelength at the center frequency), rather than thick substrate employed in common wideband designs. A prototype is fabricated and measured to verify the availability of the elements, and the measured results show good agreement with simulations.
