Abstract:The concept of physical-layer network coding (PNC) was proposed in 2006 for application in wireless networks. Since then it has developed into a subfield of network coding with wide followings. The basic idea of PNC is to exploit the network coding operation that occurs naturally when electromagnetic (EM) waves are superimposed on one another. This simple idea turns out to have profound and fundamental ramifications. Subsequent works by various researchers have led to many new results in the domains of 1) wireless communication; 2) wireless information theory; and 3) wireless networking. The purpose of this paper is fourfold. First, we give a brief tutorial on the basic concept of PNC. Second, we survey and discuss recent key results in the three aforementioned areas. Third, we examine a critical issue in PNC: synchronization. It has been a common belief that PNC requires tight synchronization. Our recent results suggest, however, that PNC may actually benefit from asynchrony. Fourth, we propose that PNC is not just for wireless networks; it can also be useful in optical networks. We provide an example showing that the throughput of a passive optical network (PON) could potentially be raised by 100% with PNC.

Applying Physical Layer Network Coding in Wireless Networks

Abstract:A main distinguishing feature of a wireless network compared with a wired network is its broadcast nature, in which the signal transmitted by a node may reach several other nodes, and a node may receive signals from several other nodes, simultaneously. Rather than a blessing, this feature is treated more as an interference-inducing nuisance in most wireless networks today (e.g., IEEE 802.11). This paper shows that the concept of network coding can be applied at the physical layer to turn the broadcast property into a capacity-boosting advantage in wireless ad hoc networks. Specifically, we propose a physical-layer network coding (PNC) scheme to coordinate transmissions among nodes. In contrast to "straightforward" network coding which performs coding arithmetic on digital bit streams after they have been received, PNC makes use of the additive nature of simultaneously arriving electromagnetic (EM) waves for equivalent coding operation. And in doing so, PNC can potentially achieve 100% and 50% throughput increases compared with traditional transmission and straightforward network coding, respectively, in 1-D regular linear networks with multiple random flows. The throughput improvements are even larger in 2-D regular networks: 200% and 100%, respectively.
End-to-end Rateless-Coded Physical Layer Network Coding in Two-Way Relay Systems

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new physical layer network coding (PNC) scheme based on rateless coding for two-way relay systems which consist of two end nodes and one relay. The two-way relay channel is studied from a new perspective of end-to-end channel equivalence, and a novel end-to-end demodulator is proposed based on the resultant end-to-end equivalent channel. Unlike the conventional demodulator for the point-to-point channel, our proposed demodulator takes into account the potential error brought by the PNC mapping at the relay, thus improves the system reliability and throughput. The theoretical end-to-end achievable rate is further derived, which serves as an upper bound for the proposed demodulation scheme. Simulation results validate the high efficiency of the proposed scheme in terms of BER and system throughput.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a coherent optical physical-layer network coding scheme on polarization-multiplexed differential quaternary phase-shift keying (PM-DQPSK) signals, in which the two PM-DQPSK signal components in the network-coded signal occupy the same channel and cannot be separated by conventional means of demultiplexing. In the scheme, network coding at intermediate nodes is realized by combining the two PM-DQPSK signals with a coupler. For network decoding at terminal nodes, one of the signal components is reconstructed and subtracted from the network-coded signal to obtain the other signal component. From its known bit sequence, waveform reconstruction of the signal to be subtracted is implemented by a lookup table. Carrier phase estimation for the reconstructed waveform utilizes the property that DQPSK signals have constant modulus at the sampling point. Experimental results show that, for 12-GBd PM-DQPSK signals, network decoding at a bit error rate of 10(-3) can be achieved, with 2.1-dB optical signal-to-noise ratio penalty relative to back-to-back transmission.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a novel optical physical-layer network coding (PNC) scheme over time-division multiplexing (TDM) passive optical network (PON). Full-duplex error-free communications between optical network units (ONUs) at 2.5 Gb/s are shown for all-optical virtual private network (VPN) applications. Compared to the conventional half-duplex communications set-up, our scheme can increase the capacity by 100% with power penalty smaller than 3 dB. Abstract:The digital transformation is creating basically a digital version of our physical world and the currency in that digital space is data. Massive amount of data has been generated ranging from wearable devices monitoring our physical health every single millisecond to autonomous vehicles generating roughly 5Tb hourly to even astronomical activities producing an order of Exabytes on daily basis and then ultra-broadband Internet comes into play, moving such data to the cloud. Internet traffic therefore has been experiencing explosive growth and in this context, optical transport networks forming the backbone of the Internet are pushed for transformation in system capacity. While the intuitive solution of deploying multiple fibers can address the pressing demand for increased capacity, doing so does not bring improvement in economic of scales in terms of cost, power consumption and spectral efficiency. This necessitates for a different approach so that the fiber capacity could be utilized in a more efficient manner. In this paper, we focus on innovative techniques, that is, photonic network coding and partial protection, to reduce the effective traffic load in order to achieve greater capacity efficiency for optical transport networks. Specifically, the application of network coding is examined by upgrading the functionalities of intermediate nodes with all-optical processing (i.e., encoding and decoding) capabilities. Besides, partial protection relying on the premise of providing just enough bandwidth in case of failure events is investigated for saving the redundant protection capacity. That it takes two to tango, combining photonic network coding and partial protection therefore bring to light new opportunities and challenges. In mining such new avenue, we present insights on how to derive compounding gains to maximize spectral efficiency via a case study.

Abstract: Direct application of network coding at the physical layer - physical layer network coding (PNC) - is a promising technique for two-way relay wireless networks. In a two-way relay network, relay nodes are used to relay two-way information flows between pairs of end nodes. This paper proposes a precise definition for PNC. Specifically, in PNC, a relay node does not decode the source information from the two ends separately, but rather directly maps the combined signals received simultaneously to a signal to be relayed. Based on this definition, PNC can be further sub-classed into two categories - PNCF (PNC over finite field) and PNCI (PNC over infinite field) - according to whether the network-code field (or groups, rings) adopted is finite or infinite. For each of PNCF and PNCI, we consider two specific estimation techniques for dealing with noise in the mapping process. The performance of the four schemes is investigated by means of analysis and simulation, assuming symbol-level synchronization only.

Abstract:Wireless communications using light waves are called visible light communication. A technique called Physical-layer Network coding allows several users to communicate simultaneously over the same channel in a distributed space-time Coding scheme. Herein, we report a new PNC-VLC one-to-many scheme using physical-layer network coding in VLC system for enhancing throughput by boosting data transmission at relay nodes. We develop an integrated PNC-VLC framework including physical-layer signal processing algorithms and medium access control approaches. Our proposed technique is then modelled mathematically and compared with some of the VLC and PNC-VLC schemes under various channel conditions and scenarios. Our investigation revealed that our proposed technique performed better than traditional PNC schemes in achieving better Bit Error Rate performance in different channel

Abstract:Physical-layer network coding (PNC) can potentially boost the throughput of a two-way relay network by 100% compared with conventional packet forwarding schemes. However, the complexity of PNC channel decoders can be considerably higher than the complexity of channel decoders for point-to-point communication systems. Although many PNC channel decoders proposed to date have good decoding performance, they may not be feasibly implemented in practical systems due to their high computation complexities. This paper presents a reduced-complexity decoder (RCD), a PNC decoder with adjustable decoding complexity that is amenable to real-time implementation. We experimentally evaluate the performance-complexity trade-off of RCD. Our experimental results show that RCD can achieve substantial throughput gain over state-of-the-art decoders proposed for real-time PNC systems.

Abstract:Recently, a network coding-based packet forwarding architecture COPE was proposed for multihop wireless networks to improve the throughput. Both simulation and testbed results verified COPE’s capability of enhancing throughput. However, COPE simply classifies all packets destined to the same nexthop into small-size or large-size virtual queues and then, to limit packet reordering, examines only the head packet of each queue to find coding solutions. Theoretically all the packets of distinct flows have the potential to be encoded together for throughput improvement, but the above packet size-oriented queue structure significantly limits this potential coding opportunity, since only one packet of a given size will be examined in the coding process. In this paper, we apply the standard flow-oriented queueing to network-coding-capable multihop wireless networks, which maintains a dedicated virtual queue for each flow and regards the head packets as coding candidates. Such flow-based architecture completely eliminates packet mis-order problem, and our theoretical analysis shows that in comparison with the simple size-based queuing, the new architecture is able to dramatically increase the potential coding opportunities. We further study the optimal network coding problem of the flow-oriented architecture. The COPE’s simple coding algorithm is not effective enough since it does not consider several other key issues like the packet size gaps among the packets to be encoded, packet loss rates and decoding probabilities. Therefore, we develop a corresponding efficient algorithm for searching good coding solutions. Our extensive simulation results demonstrated that COPE can improve the node transmission efficiency, but the flow-oriented architecture with proposed coding algorithm can make this improvement much more significant.

Abstract:Physical-layer network coding (PNC) is a communications paradigm that exploits overlapped transmissions to boost the throughput of wireless relay networks. A high point of PNC research was a theoretical proof that PNC that makes use of nested lattice codes could approach the information-theoretic capacity of a two-way relay network (TWRN), where two end nodes communicate via a relay node. The capacity cannot be achieved by conventional methods of time-division or straightforward network coding. Many practical challenges, however, remain to be addressed before the full potential of lattice-coded PNC can be realized. Two major challenges are: (1) for good performance in lattice-coded PNC, channels of simultaneously transmitting nodes must be aligned; (2) for lattice-coded PNC to be practical, the complexity of lattice encoding at the transmitters and lattice decoding at the receiver must be reduced. We address these challenges and implement a first lattice-coded PNC system on a software-defined radio (SDR) platform. Specifically, we design and implement a low-overhead channel precoding system that accurately aligns the channels of distributed nodes. In our implementation, the nodes use low-cost temperature-compensated oscillators (TCXO) only-a consequent challenge is that the channel alignment must be done more frequently and more accurately compared with the use of expensive oscillators. The low overhead and accurate channel alignment are achieved by (1) a channel precoding system implemented over FPGA to realize fast feedback of channel state information; (2) a highly-accurate carrier frequency offset (CFO) estimation method; and (3) a partial-feedback channel estimation method that significantly reduces the amount of feedback information from the receiver to the transmitters for channel precoding at the transmitters. To reduce lattice encoding and decoding complexities, we adapt the low-density lattice code (LDLC) for use in PNC systems. Experiments show that our implemented lattice-coded PNC achieves better bit error rate performance compared with timedivision and straightforward network coding systems. It also has good throughput performance in mobile non-LoS scenarios.

Abstract:We propose and simulate a code-division-multiplexing (CDM) over-fiber passive optical network (COF-PON) system using novel logical operation coding to eliminate multiple access interference (MAI). In this COF-PON system, CDM is accomplished in the frequency domain. At the transmitter, data from each user is encoded with a group of selected subcarriers, and then fed through the fiber. Non-linear effect of the transmission fiber is also considered. This coding method is simple and cost-effective. With the simulation, we tested and compared the Q factor of 1Gb/s and 0.5Gb/s downstream signals, and proved the proposed coding scheme to be feasible. © 2012 IEEE.

As a result, the destructive effect of interference is eliminated and the capacity of networks is boosted significantly. A key requirement of PNC is synchronization among nodes, which has not been addressed previously. This is the focus of this paper. Specifically, we investigate the impact of imperfect synchronization (i.e., finite synchronization errors) on PNC. We show that with BPSK modulation, PNC still yields significantly higher capacity than straightforward network coding when there are synchronization errors. And interestingly, this remains to be so even in the extreme case where synchronization is not performed at all

Abstract:In order to achieve high-speed transmission over optical transport networks (OTNs) and maximize its throughput, we propose using a rate-adaptive polarization-multiplexed coded multilevel modulation with coherent detection based on component non-binary quasi-cyclic (QC) LDPC codes. Compared to prior-art bit-interleaved LDPC-coded modulation (BI-LDPC-CM) scheme, the proposed non-binary LDPC-coded modulation (NB-LDPC-CM) scheme not only reduces latency due to symbol- instead of bit-level processing but also provides either impressive reduction in computational complexity or striking improvements in coding gain depending on the constellation size. As the paper presents, compared to its prior-art binary counterpart, the proposed NB-LDPC-CM scheme addresses the needs of future OTNs, which are achieving the target BER performance and providing maximum possible throughput both over the entire lifetime of the OTN, better.

Abstract:We present an optimal decoder for physical-layer network coding (PNC) in multipath fading channels. Previous studies on PNC have largely focused on the single-path case. For PNC, multipath introduces not only intersymbol interference (ISI) but cross-symbol interference (Cross-SI) between signals simultaneously transmitted by multiple users as well. To overcome these problems, the decoder at the relay of our PNC design makes use of a belief propagation (BP) algorithm to decode the multipath-distorted signals received from multiple users into a network-coded packet. We refer to our multipath decoding algorithm as MP-PNC. Our simulation results show that, benchmarked against synchronous PNC over a one-path channel, the bit-error-rate (BER) performance penalty of MP-PNC under a two-tap International Telecommunication Union (ITU) channel model can be kept within 0.5 dB. Moreover, it outperforms a multiuser detection (MUD)- xor algorithm by 3 dB (MUD- xor decodes the individual information from both users explicitly before performing the xor network-coding mapping). Although the framework of fading-channel PNC presented in this paper is demonstrated based on two- and three-path channel models, our algorithm can be extended to cases with more than three paths.
A Physical Layer Network Coding Design for 5G Network MIMO

Abstract:This paper presents a physical layer network coding (PNC) approach for network MIMO (N-MIMO) systems to release the heavy burden of backhaul load. The proposed PNC approach is applied for uplink scenario in binary systems, and the design guideline serves multiple mobile terminals (MTs) and guarantees unambiguous recovery of the message from each MT. We present a novel PNC design criterion first based on binary matrix theories, followed by an adaptive optimal mapping selection algorithm based on the proposed design criterion. In order to reduce the real-time computational complexity, a two-stage search algorithm for the optimal binary PNC mapping matrix is developed. Numerical results show that the proposed scheme achieves lower outage probability with reduced backhaul load compared to practical CoMP schemes which quantize the estimated symbols from a log-likelihood ratio (LLR) based multiuser detector into binary bits at each access point (AP).

Abstract:The growing demand for high-speed data, quality of service ( QoS) assurance, and energy efficiency has triggered the evolution of fourth-generation ( 4G) Long-Term Evolution-Advanced ( LTE-A) networks to fifth generation ( 5G) and beyond. Interference is still a major performance bottleneck. This paper studies the application of physical-layer network coding ( PNC), which is a technique that exploits interference, in heterogeneous cellular networks. In particular, we propose a rate-maximizing relay selection algorithm for a single cell with multiple relays assuming the decode-and-forward ( DF) strategy. With nodes transmitting at different powers, the proposed algorithm adapts the resource allocation according to the differing link rates, and we prove theoretically that the optimization problem is log-concave. The proposed technique is shown to perform significantly better than the widely studied selection-cooperation technique. We then undertake an experimental study-on a software radio platform-of the decoding performance of PNC with unbalanced signal-to-noise ratios ( SNRs) in the multiple-access transmissions. This problem is inherent in cellular networks, and it is shown that, with channel coding and decoders based on multiuser detection and successive interference cancellation, the performance is better with power imbalance. This paper paves the way for further research on multicell PNC, resource allocation, and the implementation of PNC with higher order modulations and advanced coding techniques.
A Linear Physical-Layer Network Coding Based Multiple Access Approach.

Abstract:This paper studies a linear physical-layer network coding multiple access (LPNC-MA) scheme that is capable of achieving any rate-tuples in the MAC capacity region without receiver-iterations or time-sharing. We propose to utilize q-ary irregular repeat accumulate (IRA) codes over finite integer field-s/rings and q-PAM as the underlying coded-modulation. The receiver sequentially computes M network coded (NC) message sequences, where the previously computed message sequence is used as side information in computing subsequent ones. All users’ messages are then recovered by solving the computed M NC messages via the inverse of the NC coefficient matrix. A joint nested code construction and EXIT chart based code optimization method is developed, yielding near-capacity performance (within 1.1 dB the capacity limit for three users). For fading MAC, we propose a pragmatic method for identifying the network coding coefficient matrix that maximizes the mutual information. Numerical results demonstrate that the frame error rate (FER) of LPNC-MA is within a fraction of dB the outage probability of fading MAC capacity. For a relatively large number of users, it is shown that LPNC-MA remarkably outperforms NOMA-SIC and IDMA in the high spectral efficiency regime, while avoiding the big-loop receiver iteration.
