Abstract:We report rich nonlinear dynamics in integrated coupled lasers with ultra-short coupling delay. Mutually stable locking, period-1 oscillation, frequency locking, quasi-periodicity and chaos are observed experimentally. The dynamic behaviors are reproduced numerically by solving coupled delay differential equations that take the variation of both frequency detuning and coupling phase into account. Moreover, it is pointed out that the round-trip frequency is not involved in the above nonlinear dynamical behaviors. Instead, the relationship between the frequency detuning Δν and the relaxation oscillation frequency νr under mutual injection are found to be critical for the various observed dynamics in mutually coupled lasers with very short delay.

Abstract:We investigate the operational principle of mode-locking in monolithic semiconductor lasers incorporating coupled-resonator optical waveguides. The size of mode-locked lasers operating at tens of GHz repetition frequencies can be drastically reduced owing to the significantly decreased group velocity of light. The dynamics of such devices are analyzed numerically based on a coupled-oscillator model with the gain, loss, spontaneous emission, nearest-neighbor coupling and amplitude phase coupling (as described by the linewidth enhancement factor alpha) taken into account. It is demonstrated that active mode-locking can be achieved for moderate alpha parameter values. Simulations also indicate that large alpha parameters may destabilize the mode-locking behavior and result in irregular pulsations, which nevertheless can be effectively suppressed by incorporating detuning of individual cavity resonant frequencies in the device design.

Abstract: We investigate the buildup dynamics of broadband Q-switched noise-like pulse (QS-NLP) driven by slow gain dynamics in a microfiber-based passively mode-locked Yb-doped fiber laser. Based on shot-to-shot tracing of the transient optical spectra and qualitatively reproduced numerial simulation, we demonstrate that slow gain dynamics is deeply involved in the onset of such complex temporal and spectral instabilities of QS-NLP. The proposed dynamic model in this work could contribute to deeper insight of such nonlinear dynamics and transient dynamics simulation in ultrafast fiber laser.

Abstract:Noise characteristics of stable mutual injection locking under weak coupling is studied by a theory based on noise correlation analysis. Both relative intensity noise (RIN) and frequency noise are investigated in detail. It is found that the RIN characteristics of mutual injection locked lasers under weak coupling are similar to that of unidirectional injection locking, except for the oscillation caused by coupling delay. Different from unidirectional injection locking, however, an extremely narrow linewidth can be obtained by mutual injection locking, and the injection parameters have a significant influence on the linewidth.

Abstract:The frequency noise characteristic of lasers under mutual injection locking is investigated. Pronounced frequency noise suppression is demonstrated for two distributed feedback lasers mutually coupled through a fiber link with 60 ns delay, confirmed by both local oscillator heterodyne and delayed self-heterodyne methods. Locking can be secured for the weak-coupling regime and a locking map is derived. The frequency noise of the laser under mutual injection locking is found to improve with increasing coupling strength or injection current. The single-sided white frequency noise of the laser is estimated to be below 3 Hz(2) Hz(-1), corresponding to an intrinsic linewidth narrower than 9.4 Hz. Abstract:A simple and effective approach to semiconductor laser linewidth narrowing via mutual injection locking is proposed and demonstrated in both short and long delay regimes. A theoretical analysis is presented to investigate the linewidth behavior of semiconductor lasers under mutual injection locking. Experimental demonstrations in short and long delay regimes are implemented by integrated devices and a fiber link system, respectively. Locking condition and dependence of laser linewidth on coupling parameters in both regimes are studied, confirming mutual injection locking as a practical method for linewidth narrowing. For the short-delayed integrated lasers, a linewidth narrowing factor of 13 is demonstrated and sub-MHz linewidth is achieved, while for the long-delayed lasers coupled by fiber link, the intrinsic linewidth is reduced to sub-100 Hz.

Abstract:The properties of injection-locking chaos synchronization and communication in closed-loop external-cavity semiconductor lasers (ECSL) subject to phase-conjugate feedback (PCF) are investigated systematically. We theoretically analyze the general conditions for the injection-locking, and numerically investigate the properties of injection-locking chaos synchronization in the phase and intensity domains, the influences of frequency detuning and intrinsic parameter mismatch on the injection-locking chaos synchronization, as well as the performance of injection-locking chaos synchronization-based communication in closed-loop PCF-ECSL systems. The numerical results demonstrate that with respect to the conventional optical feedback (COF) scenario, the injection-locking chaos synchronization in a PCF-ECSLs configuration shows a significantly wider high-quality synchronization region and excellent feasibility, and the performance of chaos communication can also be enhanced.

Abstract:It is well known that nano-lasers (NLs), as important optical components, have attracted widespread attention for their output characteristics. In this paper, the dynamic behavior and time-delay concealment properties of NLs mutually coupled in open-loop, semi-open-loop, and closed-loop structures have been numerically investigated. We employ bifurcation diagrams and 0–1 chaos tests in our simulations to quantitatively analyze the dynamic properties of the system and introduce the autocorrelation function to evaluate the ability of the system to conceal the time-delay signature (TDS). In the meantime, the effects of the NL parameters and the controllable variables of the system on the TDS are studied. The results indicate that, compared with an open-loop structure without feedback, the mutual coupling scheme with added feedback is beneficial for the system to output high-quality chaotic signals. Furthermore, selecting a moderate Purcell factor F and a smaller spontaneous emission coupling factor β can achieve TDS concealment over a wider parameter range of injection intensity and frequency detuning.

Spontaneous phase locking in a broad-area semiconductor laser

Abstract:Broad-area semiconductor lasers are employed in many high-power applications, however, their spatio-temporal dynamics is complex and intrinsically unstable due to the interaction of several transverse lasing modes. A dynamical and spatio-spectral analysis with ultra-high resolution of commercial broad-area lasers reveals multiplets of phase locked first- and second-order transverse modes that are spontaneously created by the nonlinear dynamics for a wide range of operation parameters. Phase locking between modes of different transverse order is demonstrated by comparing the linewidths of the lasing modes to that of their beat note as well as by a direct measurement of their phase fluctuation correlations. Since the laser and the setup lack any feature designed to induce locking and the overall dynamics is unstable, the observation of this spontaneous phase locking effect is very unexpected. Our findings indicate that chimera-like states featuring groups of synchronized oscillators coexisting with unsynchronized ones can spontaneously form in broad-area lasers, and may thus be found in a wider range of optical systems and beyond than previously assumed. Moreover, some of the phase locked modes do not even exist on the passive-cavity level, but are created by the nonlinear dynamics, an effect not previously observed in the context of chimera states.

Numerical investigation into the injection-locking phenomena of gain switched lasers for optical frequency comb generation

Abstract:We present detailed numerical simulations of the laser dynamics that describe optical frequency comb formation by injection-locking a gain-switched laser. The typical rate equations for semiconductor lasers including stochastic carrier recombination and spontaneous emission suffice to show the injection-locking behavior of gain switched lasers, and we show how the optical frequency comb evolves starting from the free-running state, right through the final injection- locked state. Unlike the locking of continuous wave lasers, we show that the locking range for gain switched lasers is considerably greater because injection locking can be achieved by injecting at frequencies close to one of the comb lines. The quality of the comb lines are formally assessed by calculating the FM-noise spectral density and we show that under injection-locking conditions the FM-noise spectral density of the comb lines tend to that of the maser laser.

Abstract:Based on the rate equation model, we study the phase locking and self-mixing properties of optically mutual-injected terahertz quantum cascade lasers. Within the phase-locked range, the laser array works steadily at the same frequency, and the electric field amplitudes are stable. Out of the phase-locked range, the instantaneous frequencies and electric field amplitudes oscillate with time. The spontaneous emission noise of mutual-injected QCLs is higher than that of free-running lasers with the same parameters. Mutual-injected QCLs for self-mixing velocity measurement are also analyzed and simulated. When the array works in the phase-locked range, simulation with a moving target shows that self-mixing signals can be observed from each laser. These results are helpful for further understanding the nonlinear dynamic behaviors of THz QCLs under optical injection and provide theoretical support for the development of self-mixing measurement techniques using QCL arrays.

Abstract:We numerically investigate the chaos synchronization and message transmission between two mutual coupling semiconductor lasers (MCSLs) subject to identical unidirectional injections (UIs) from an external cavity semiconductor laser (ECSL). The synchronization between the MCSLs is realized through injection locking in conjunction with symmetric operation. The simulation results show that stable isochronal synchronization between the MCSLs can be achieved under proper driving injections. This type of synchronization is robust to parameter mismatch up to tens of percentage and frequency detuning of several tens of gigahertz, which is much better than those of the MCSLs systems with self-feedback. Moreover, the investigations on the mutual chaos pass filtering effects and the message transmission indicate that the isochronal synchronization allows mutual message exchange with a bit rate higher than 10 Gb/s, when the chaos modulation technology is adopted. In addition, the MCSLs can synchronize with the ECSL for proper UI and MC, which provides an opportunity for array chaos synchronization and chaos communication networks. Finally, leader/laggard synchronization can also be achieved in the proposed system.

Abstract:Self-mode-locked semiconductor disk lasers possess compact resonant cavity and stable construction. These devices have a wide application prospect because of their picosecond to sub-picosecond pulse width, excellent beam quality and tailorable emission wavelength. In this paper, dynamics simulations of self-mode-locking in a semiconductor disk laser are performed by using delay differential equations for the first time. The corresponding conditions of different modality of mode-locking, including Q-switched mode-locking, continuous-wave mode-locking and harmonic mode-locking are calculated, and their dynamics evolution processes are presented. We also analyze the characteristics of the three different mode-locking modalities and summarize their overall dynamics evolution tendency. This kind of numerical simulation and analysis provides an understanding of the dynamics process of self-mode-locking, and may be referenced for related experiments.

Abstract:Chaos synchronization and message transmission of a mutually coupled system consisting of two semiconductor lasers (SLs) and a partially transparent mirror (PTM) in between are investigated theoretically. Analytical results show that two types of chaos synchronization schemes, named as isochronal synchronization (IS) and leader/laggard synchronization (LLS), can be achieved by adjusting the reflectivity and position of PTM. By establishing SIMULINK model, numerical simulations illustrate that as the PTM is positioned at the center of two lasers, IS is available when the reflectivity of PTM is moderate. The LLS is achieved when the reflectivity of PTM equals to 0.5, which means feedback strength equals to coupling strength. Its lag time is just determined by the difference of feedback delay time. The investigations of mutual chaos pass filtering (MCPF) effects and the secure chaotic communication simulations indicate that IS allows real-time bidirectional message transmission on a public-channel, while LLS can achieve higher security chaotic communication by using its lag time as cryptography key. The demonstrated system can be used as a rudiment of array chaos communications system.

Abstract:The properties of the leader-laggard chaos synchronization (LLCS) in two mutually coupled external-cavity semiconductor lasers are studied systematically. We theoretically analyze the general conditions for the LLCS based on the symmetric operation mechanism and numerically investigate the influences of operation parameters, the mismatch robustness, the chaos pass filtering effects, the communication performance, and the security of the system. It is demonstrated that stable LLCS, which allows simultaneous bidirectional message exchange in virtue of mutual chaos pass filtering effect, can be achieved in a wide operation region; moreover, high-quality LLCS and satisfactory communication performance can be maintained under a relatively large device parameter mismatch. Compared with the isochronal chaos synchronization in the same system, LLCS provides a wider operation region, a better mismatch robustness, and a stronger chaos pass filtering effect. In addition, the investigations on the security of private key message transmission under some potential attacks indicate that the security can be enhanced by increasing the bit rate moderately, exchanging messages with different bit rates, or monitoring the LLCS.

Abstract:Chaos synchronization and message transmission between two semiconductor lasers with extremely unsymmetrical bidirectional injections (EUBIs) are discussed. By using EUBIs, synchronization is realized through injection locking. Numerical results show that if the laser subjected to strong injection serves as the receiver, chaos pass filtering (CPF) of the system is similar to that of unidirectional coupled systems. Moreover, if the other laser serves as the receiver, a stronger CPF can be obtained. Finally, we demonstrate that messages can be extracted successfully from either of the two transmission directions of the system.

Abstract:The chaotic complexity properties of semiconductor lasers in the chaotic synchronization systems are investigated numerically, based on the information theory based quantifier, the permutation entropy (PE). We find that, on the one hand, the degree of complexity for the master laser increases with the feedback strength firstly and then saturate at higher feedback strength, but are hardly affected by the feedback delay. On the other hand, for the slave laser, the complexity degree is closer to that for the master laser when the high quality chaos synchronization is obtained, which shows that, the PE method is a successful quantifier to evaluate the degree of complexity for the chaotic signals in chaos synchronization systems, and can be considered as a complementary tool to observe the synchronization quality.
