Abstract:In order to have a deep understanding of dielectric barrier discharge（DBD） in neon at atmospheric pressure,the breakdown voltage,the discharge mode and evolution of DBD in a parallel neon gap were investigated by means of electrical measurements and fast photography.Homogenous discharges could be easily produced in 2~8mm gaps in neon and were attributed to glow discharge.Compared to that in helium,the homogenous DBD in neon had a smaller discharge current density and a wider current pulse.The differences between the first breakdown and subsequent steady breakdowns were measured,it was revealed that the first breakdown usually had a higher gap voltage and a later phase,as explained by the seed electrons and penning ionization.High-speed time-resolved photographs of the homogenous discharge in neon were taken using an ICCD camera with an exposure time of 10ns.Side-view photographs showed an evolution from Townsend discharge to glow discharge,which was similar to that observed in helium discharge,while the positive column could hardly be observed in neon at the sub-normal stage of the discharge.The end-view photographs showed a radial development in neon discharge which was also similar to that in helium.

Abstract:The transitions from pattern dielectric barrier discharge to diffusion barrier discharge were observed with a wedge-like gap. As the gap length gradually increased from left to right, the discharge changed from patterns to a large area of uniform diffusion glow discharge. It was found that the discharge patterns formed in the area with higher E/p [ field strength/gas density], suggesting that a higher applied electric field might cause a transition from a diffusion glow to discharge patterns at the same gap and gas pressure. When the gas pressure increased, pattern discharge was transformed to diffusion discharge, which corresponded to the E/p decreasing. Therefore, E/p is related with the discharge mode.

In order to have a deep understanding of the mechanism of DBD in inert gases at atmospheric pressure, Comparative study of the discharge mode, evolution of the homogenous DBD and spectra in a parallel gap were carried out by means of electrical measurements, fast photography and time-resolved emission spectroscopy in different inert gases. It was found that homogenous DBD could be easily produced in 2∼8mm gaps in helium and neon, and they were attributed to glow discharge. Compared to that in helium or neon, only a part of the 5mm-diameter electrode could be covered by homogenous DBD in 2mm argon gap. And a small increase of the applied voltage would convert the partly homogenous DBD into the pattern mode. If the gas gap was no less than 3 mm in argon, a bright filament would appear, and the current density could reach 7.5A/cm2 in the steamer channel. High-speed time-resolved photographs of the homogenous DBD in helium, neon and argon were taken using an Intensified-CCD camera with an exposure time of 10ns. Side-view photographs showed an evolution from Townsend discharge to glow discharge. The end-view photographs showed a radial development. The spectroscopic diagnosis showed that penning ionization was very important to obtain a homogenous DBD. N2+ first negative system (B2 Σu+ → X2Σg+) was observed in helium, but not observed in the neon and argon. The emission spectral lines of N2 second positive band system (C 3∏u → B 3∏g) could be observed in neon and argon.

High-speed time-resolved photographs of the homogenous discharge in helium, neon and argon were taken using an ICCD camera. Side-view photographs showed an evolution from Townsend discharge to glow discharge. The end-view photographs exhibited a radial development. The spectroscopic diagnosis showed that the penning ionization between energetic metastabilty and impurities was the most important reason leading to a homogenous discharge. The N＋ first negative system（B2∑u＋ →X2∑g＋）, existing in helium discharge, could not be observed in the neon or argon, as was due to the lower energy level of metastable neon and argon states. Instead, the emission spectral lines of N2 second positive band system（ C3 Пu→B3 Пg） were observed in neon and argon.

Abstract:A non-equal gap distance dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) between cone-shape and a cylinder-shaped electrodes is reported. The DBD is driven by a nanosecond voltage pulse. When the pulse frequency is 500 Hz or lower, ladder-shape plasma with multiple plasma layers is generated within the gap, with a distance increasing from 1 to 7 mm. According to high-speed photographs of the plasma captured by an intensified charge-coupled camera detector camera, the ladder-shaped plasma is formed owing to propagation of ring-shaped plasma from the region of the short-gap distance to the region of long-gap distance with regular variations in its propagation speed. The propagation speed drops to zero and lasts for about 20–30 ns at the region of each plasma layer, which results in bright plasma layers. The electric field of the plasma layer at the region of the different gap distance is evaluated according to the optical emission intensity ratio R391/394 of N2+ at 391 nm and N2 at 394 nm. The obtained electric field drops from 8.1 to 6.4 kV/mm when the plasma is propagated from regions of gap distance of 2–5 mm. When the pulse frequency is increased to 1 kHz or higher, the discharge changes into a filamentary mode and the multiple-layer plasma disappears.

Abstract:We present the variations of electrical parameters of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) when the DBD generator is used for the material modification,whereas the relevant physical mechanism is also elaborated.An equivalent circuit model is applied for a DBD generator working in a filament discharging mode,considering the addition of epoxy resin (EP) as the plasma modified material.The electrical parameters are calculated through the circuit model.The surface conductivity,surface potential decay,trap distributions and surface charge distributions on the EP surface before and after plasma treatments were measured and calculated.It is found that the coverage area of micro-discharge channels on the EP surface is increased with the discharging time under the same applied AC voltage.The results indicate that the plasma modified material could influence the ignition of new filaments in return during the modification process.Moreover,the surface conductivity and density of shallow traps with low trap energy of the EP samples increase after the plasma treatment.The surface charge distributions indicate that the improved surface properties accelerate the movement and redistribution of charge carriers on the EP surface.The variable electrical parameters of discharge are attributed to the redistribution of deposited surface charge on the plasma modified EP sample surface.

Abstract:The stable homogeneous dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) is obtained in atmospheric 2–3 mm air gap. It is generated using center frequency 1 kHz high voltage power supply between two plane parallel electrodes with specific alumina ceramic plates as the dielectric barriers. The discharge characteristics are studied by a measurement of its electrical discharge parameters and observation of its light emission phenomena. The results show that a large single current pulse of about 200 μs duration appearing in each voltage pulse, and its light emission is radially homogeneous and covers the entire surface of the two electrodes. The homogeneous discharge generated is a Townsend discharge during discharge. The influences of applied barrier, its thickness, and surface roughness on the transition of discharge modes are studied. The results show that it is difficult to produce a homogeneous discharge using smooth plates or alumina plate surface roughness Ra < 100 nm even at a 1 mm air gap. If the alumina plate is too thin, the discharge also transits to filamentary discharge. If it is too thick, the discharge is too weak to observe. With the increase of air gap distance and applied voltage, the discharge can also transit from a homogeneous mode to a filamentary mode. In order to generate stable and homogeneous DBD at a larger air gap, proper dielectric material, dielectric thickness, and dielectric surface roughness should be used, and proper applied voltage amplitude and frequency should also be used.

Abstract:A bi-directional nanosecond pulsed power supply is employed to generate diffuse dielectric barrier discharge in N2 using needle-plate electrode configuration at atmospheric pressure. Both discharge images and optical emission spectra of diffuse bi-directional nanosecond high-voltage pulsed dielectric barrier discharge are successfully recorded under severe electromagnetic interference. The diffuse performance of the discharge at different electrode gap distances is observed. The effects of pulse peak voltage, pulse repetition rate, electrode gap distance, He addition, and O2 addition on the optical emission spectra are investigated. The main physicochemical processes involved are discussed.
Influence of Dielectric and Electrode on DBD at Atmospheric Pressure

Abstract:Summary form only given. Experiments of DBD in a 2-mm air gap were performed. When fine wire mesh electrodes covered with 0.1 mm PET film and 50 Hz AC power source were used, the breakdown voltage of the gap is 6.4 kV, about 1.3 W lower than that using plate electrodes covered with 1 mm quartz plate. The discharge using the mesh electrodes covered by PET film looks more uniform than that using plate electrodes covered by quartz plate. Even when a uniform discharge was observed, multipulses of discharge current in the half cycle of the applied voltage were recorded, which indicates the discharge is filament discharge rather than glow discharge. When 50 Hz source is replaced by a high frequency source, the uniform discharge turns to strong filaments. It may be explained by the thermal instability. The reason for the mesh electrodes covered by PET film making discharge more uniform is still not fully understood. The calculations of the electric field in the gap show that the wire mesh electrodes couldn't enhance much the gap field close to the PET film when the film is thicker than 0.05 mm. In helium APGD experiments with one electrode uncovered by dielectric it was found that discharge current peak is higher and breakdown voltage of the gap is lower in the half voltage cycle when the uncovered electrode was operated as cathode. It seems not to be closely related to the second electron emission from the uncovered cathode since no much differences were found when the uncovered electrode of stainless steel was replaced by an aluminium one

Abstract:The process of coplanar dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) has been investigated experimentally and theoretically by using a segmented-electrode system. The local discharge current, light emission intensity and the developing velocity of plasma on the cathode were obtained. The results of the experiment and the two-dimension fluid modeling are compared. It was shown that there exists a non-uniform field in plasma region which causes the disagreement between the local discharge and the light emission during the discharge development in coplanar DBD. The secondary electron emission producod by photon bombardment on the dielectric surface should be taken into account in studying DBD.

Abstract:Summary form only given. Dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) consists of filamentary micro-discharges under nonequilibrium, atmospheric pressure plasma condition. The size and spatial distribution of microdischarge spots are of great importance to surface processing. In our experiment, water electrodes were used for visualization. Charge-coupled device and highspeed photography technology were used to capture the quasi-stationary and transient image of microdischarge spots. The microdischarge current and voltage waveforms were recorded by digital oscilloscope. A special circuit synchronized both optical device and oscilloscope. The experiments were done under different voltages, frequencies, gaps and dielectrics with nitrogen mixture flowing through the discharge chamber. By comparisons of visualization images and electrical waveforms, some interesting conclusions were drawn.

Abstract:Atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharges (DBDs) have a wide range of industrial applications, generally exhibiting either filamentary or diffuse (i.e. glow) discharges. The focus of this investigation is on the formation mechanisms of the discharge current pulse width, on the order of tens of microseconds, accompanied by a light source formation, which is called a light source (LS) mode in air DBDs at atmospheric pressure. From a macroscopic point of view, the characteristics of the discharge current in the LS mode are similar with those of the glow mode. The optical and electrical characteristics of air DBDs at atmospheric pressure are investigated in the transition from the filamentary mode to the LS mode by measuring the optical emission spectroscopy and electrical signals. It is shown that in the manual increasing voltage stage, the vibrational temperature almost never changes and the gas temperature, electron temperature, dielectric capacitance, gas voltage (Vg) and discharge power (P) increase with an increase in the applied voltage. In the automatic decreasing voltage stage, all of these parameters, except Vg and P, increase with a decrease in the voltage. But, when the voltage decreases to a minimum value corresponding to the LS mode, P reaches a maximum value. In this paper, the variations of these parameters are analyzed and discussed in detail. The formation of the LS mode originates from the secondary electrons. The formation mechanisms of the secondary electrons are also discussed.
Uniform of Unipolar Nanosecond Pulse DBD in Atmospheric Air

Abstract:In order to obtain homogenous dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) in atmospheric air, the uniform of nanosecond pulse DBD is studied in the paper. The DBD is excited by positive unipolar nanosecond pulse with a rise time of about 15 ns and a full width at half maximum of 30～40ns, and the conditions and characteristics of homogenous DBD are analyzed by the measurement of their electrical discharge parameters and images. The experimental results show that the discharge current exhibits bipolar and the electrical parameters in unipolar nanosecond-pulse DBD are significantly higher than that in the DBD using ac or microsecond-pulse excitation. It is found that homogenous DBD can be obtained under certain condition. Furthermore, the effects of pulse repetition frequency (PRF) and air gap spacing on the uniform of DBD show that the PRF affects less on the uniform of DBD when both electrodes are covered by dielectrics and the air gap spacing is fixed at 2mm, but the discharge significantly transits from homogenous to filamentary mode when the air gap spacing increases from 2mm to 8mm. In addition, the relation ship between the uniformity of DBD and rise time of applied pulse is discussed.

Abstract:Dielectric barrier discharges (DBD) are widely utilised non‐equilibrium atmospheric pressure plasmas with a diverse range of applications, such as material processing, surface treatment, light sources, pollution control, and medicine. Over the course of several decades, extensive research has been dedicated to the generation of homogeneous DBD (H‐DBD), focussing on understanding the transition from H‐DBD to filamentary DBD and exploring strategies to create and sustain H‐DBD. This paper first discusses the influence of various parameters on DBD, including gas flow, dielectric material, surface conductivity, and mesh electrode. Secondly, a chronological literature review is presented, highlighting the development of H‐DBD and the associated understanding of its underlying mechanisms. This encompasses the generation of H‐DBD in helium, nitrogen, and air. Lastly, the paper provides a brief overview of multiple‐current‐pulse (MCP) behaviours in H‐DBD. The objective of this article is to provide a chronological understanding of homogeneous dielectric barrier discharge (DBD). This understanding will aid in the design of new experiments aimed at better comprehending the mechanisms behind H‐DBD generation and ultimately assist in achieving large‐volume H‐DBD in an air environment.

Dielectric Barrier Discharge and Its Applications

Abstract:In order to comprehensively understand DBD, we reviewed the investigations of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) by focusing on the physics related to the uniform discharge at atmospheric pressure. It is suggested that the best way to distinguish a uniform discharge from a filamentary one is to take a picture with an exposure time of about 10 ns. Even for a real uniform discharge, it is important to further distinguish a glow discharge from a Townsend discharge. The only way to get a uniform discharge at atmospheric pressure is to make the discharge at a lower electric field by increasing the seed electrons initiating the discharge. Recently, the uniform discharges at atmospheric pressure have been obtained in helium and nitrogen, i.e., subnormal glow discharge in helium and Townsend discharge in nitrogen. Moreover, we briefly introduced three industrial applications of DBD plasmas, including the advanced ozone generator, continuous double-sided treatment of foil surface, plasma display panel.
Experimental study of homogeneous dielectric barrier discharge in air at atmospheric pressure

Abstract:Summary form only given. The dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) in air at atmospheric pressure was investigated with electrical measurement and fast photography. Homogeneous DBD without filaments was obtained in a gap of a length as long as 3 mm, which has never been reported in previous literatures. The air gap was in between two plane-parallel electrodes of 50 mm in diameter, each covered by a specific ceramic plate with a thickness of 1.5∼3.25 mm. By subtracting the displacement current from the total current, there appears one current peak per half cycle of the applied sinusoidal voltage, which is typical for homogeneous DBD. The current peak is 1 mA in amplitude and about 85 µs in FWHM (full width at half magnitude). Side-view photographs with 10 ns exposure time taken at the time about the peak of the current pulse showed that there were no filaments in the discharge gap. A luminous layer close to the instantaneous anode was observed, indicating the homogeneous DBD was a Townsend discharge. When choosing a ceramic thinner than 1.5 mm, some filaments randomly appeared in the gap, as was called a mixed mode of homogenous and filamentary DBD. This was because in DBD the dielectric capacitance played an important role in the limitation of the discharge current. A smaller capacitance would help to avoid an electron avalanche overdeveloping to a streamer. When a stable Townsend discharge was maintained, the breakdown voltage was determined to be only 8.3 kV, much lower than the static breakdown voltage of 11.2 kV for the same air gap of 3 mm in length. The formation of Townsend discharge was attributed to the uniqueness of the shallow traps on the surface of the specific ceramic plate and the common effect of the current limitation by dielectric.

Abstract:In order to study the mechanism of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) producing non-equilibrium plasma, the DBD equipment was simplified into a one-dimensional model. The AC power supply voltage was set as 18 kV, the frequency was set as 10 kHz, and the discharge medium was N 2 and O 2 with a mass fraction of 4:1 to simulate the air. The impact cross-section, electron mobility and initial electron temperature of the discharge reaction were determined by BOLSIG+. The electric potential field diagram, voltage current relation diagram, electron density diagram, temperature distribution diagram and electron energy distribution function EEDF diagram are obtained. The results show that the electric field reaches the maximum near the gap sheath. Due to the generation of an additional electric field, the current density reaches the maximum at the rising edge of the air gap voltage. The continuous ionization of air particles in the discharge process leads to the accumulation of electrons and the formation of electron collapse, which leads to the increase in electron density and the decrease in electron temperature. As the reduced electric field E/N increases, the proportion of high-energy electrons in the total electron number increases. At this time, the reaction of non-equilibrium plasma intensifies, and more active substances can be produced.

Abstract:A self-consistent 2-D fluid simulation model is used to simulate dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) in the air of a wire–cylinder structure at atmospheric pressure. By solving the electron–ion transport equation, diffusion equation, and boundary conditions of the plasma, the numerical results of discharge and plasma characteristics are obtained, and the accuracy is verified. The results show that there are two current pulses during a typical cycle, in the voltage rising and falling stages, and that the peak values of these two pulses differ because of the asymmetry of the electrode structure. By analyzing the evolution of the 1-D and 2-D distributions of the electric field and particle densities, the characteristics of typical glow discharge at the moment of the current pulse are shown: cathode fall, negative glow, and a plasma positive column. The entire discharge process starts with Townsend discharge, evolves to glow discharge at the moment of the current pulse, and gradually returns to Townsend discharge after the end of the current pulse. The distribution of electrons and ions at the moment of the current pulse is demonstrated, and the variation in charge accumulation on the surface of the medium is calculated. Surface charge accumulation has a periodic symmetric distribution and is divided into four main stages: positive charge neutralization, negative charge accumulation, negative charge neutralization, and positive charge accumulation.

Abstract:Dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) is an important method of generating non-thermal plasma, and DBD generated by nanosecond-pulse is different from that by conventional AC power source. Characteristics of DBD driven by repetitive unipolar nanosecond-pulses in atmospheric air were investigated, the electric parameters were calculated, and the comparison of electric parameters for DBD under AC, microsecond-pulse and nanosecond-pulse excitation was conducted. The relationship between the discharge images and current was obtained, and the discharge mechanism excited by nanosecond-pulse was also analyzed. Some experiment results were acquired, e.g. the measured discharge current exhibits bipolar pulses, which indicating two continuous discharges, and the electric parameters are higher than those under the excitation of AC or microsecond-pulse. Furthermore, with the increase of air gap spacing, the transition from the homogeneous to filamentary discharge is related to the fluctuation of discharge current. Because microdischarge duration and the width of pulse are on the same order under nanosecond-pulse excitation, the microdischarges take place synchronously, and it is difficult for consecutive occurrences on the same location, which has a positive influence on the discharge uniform.
Axial and Radial Evolution of the Dielectric Barrier Discharge in Helium at Atmospheric Pressure

Abstract:Dielectric barrier discharge in helium at atmospheric pressure was studied by taking fast images of the discharge during one current pulse using a fast-gated intensified charge coupled device(ICCD)camera. It was observed that there appeared a weak luminous layer close to the anode at the very beginning of the discharge, and then the luminous area gradually expanded into the entire gap as the anode layer moves towards to the cathode, finally a strong luminous layer formed close to the cathode at the time around the maximum of the current pulse. The evolution of the discharge pattern indicates a transition from Townsend discharge to glow discharge. The measured thickness of cathode fall is 0.4mm, which indicates the discharge being a subnormal glow discharge. The radial evolution of dielectric barrier discharge in helium at atmospheric pressure was also studied by taking end-view photographs of the discharge during one current pulse using the ICCD. The photographs were transformed into three-dimensional images that make the radial evolution of the discharge more visualized. It was found that the discharge began with a weak Townsend discharge covering the entire electrode surface, developed much more rapidly in the central part where the electric field is higher, and spread rapidly outwards.
