Abstract:Laser cooling of mesoscopic mechanical resonators is of great interest for both fundamental studies and practical applications. We provide a general framework to describe the cavity-assisted back-action cooling in the strong-coupling regime. By studying the cooling dynamics, we find that the temporal evolution of mean phonon number oscillates as a function of the optomechanical coupling strength depending on frequency mixing. The further analytical result reveals that the optimal cooling limit is obtained when the system eigenmodes satisfy the frequency-matching condition. The reduced instantaneous-state cooling limits with dynamic dissipative cooling approach are also presented. Our study provides a guideline for optimizing the back-action cooling of mesoscopic mechanical resonators in the strong-coupling regime.

Abstract:Quantum manipulation of coupled mechanical resonators has become an important research topic in optomechanics because these systems can be used to study the quantum coherence effects involving multiple mechanical modes. A prerequisite for observing macroscopic mechanical coherence is to cool the mechanical resonators to their ground state. Here we propose a theoretical scheme to cool two coupled mechanical resonators by introducing an optomechanical interface. The final mean phonon numbers in the two mechanical resonators are calculated exactly and the results show that the ground-state cooling is achievable in the resolved-sideband regime and under the optimal driving. By adiabatically eliminating the cavity field in the large-decay regime, we obtain analytical results of the cooling limits, which show the smallest achievable phonon numbers and the parameter conditions under which the optimal cooling is achieved. Finally, the scheme is extended to the cooling of a chain of coupled mechanical resonators.

Abstract:Cooling of mesoscopic mechanical resonators represents a primary concern in cavity optomechanics. In this Letter, in the strong optomechanical coupling regime, we propose to dynamically control the cavity dissipation, which is able to significantly accelerate the cooling process while strongly suppressing the heating noise. Furthermore, the dynamic control is capable of overcoming quantum backaction and reducing the cooling limit by several orders of magnitude. The dynamic dissipation control provides new insights for tailoring the optomechanical interaction and offers the prospect of exploring mesoscopic quantum physics.

Abstract:Motional ground-state cooling and quantum-coherent manipulation of mesoscopic mechanical systems are crucial goals in both fundamental physics and applied science. We demonstrate that the motional ground state can be achieved in the highly unresolved sideband regime, through coherent auxiliary cavity interferences. We further illustrate coherent strong Rabi coupling between indirectly coupled and individually optimized mechanical resonators and optical cavities through effective dark-mode interaction. The proposed approach provides a platform for quantum manipulation of mesoscopic mechanical devices beyond the resolved sideband limit.

Abstract:A hybrid intracavity squeezing optomechanical cooling system, in which an auxiliary cavity couples to an optomechanical cavity with a nonlinear medium inside it, is proposed to realize the ground state cooling of the mechanical resonator in the highly unresolved sideband regime. We demonstrate that the quantum backaction heating can be suppressed perfectly by the intracavity squeezing, and the cooling process can be further promoted by adjusting the tunnel coupling between the coupled cavities. The scheme has good performance in resisting the environmental thermal noise and better tolerance for the auxiliary cavity quality factor and provides the possibility for the quantum manipulation of the mechanical resonator with large mass and low frequency.

Abstract:Ground-state cooling of multiple mechanical resonators is an important goal in the study of quantum optomechanics. Here, we propose a dynamic dissipative synchronous cooling method for the simultaneous cooling of the two mechanical resonators in the strong optomechanical coupling regime. The synchronized modulation of the cavity dissipation can significantly accelerate the cooling process, with both of the resonators reaching the ground state. We derive the analytical cooling limits, which agree with the numerical simulations. The present scheme opens a new prospect for the research of multiple-mode ground-state cooling of mechanical resonators.

Abstract:Quantum ground-state cooling of macroscopic mechanical resonators is of essential importance to both fundamental physics and applied science. The conventional method of laser cooling is limited by the quantum backaction, which requires the mechanical sideband to be resolved in order to cool to ground state. Herein, an idea to break the quantum backaction limit by engineering intracavity optical squeezing is presented. It gives rise to quantum interference for all the dissipation channels, and under certain circumstances can totally remove the influence of the cavity dissipation and the resultant quantum backaction, with much lower cooling limit irrespective of the sideband resolution. It is shown that the scheme enables ground-state cooling in the highly unresolved sideband limit and it also works beyond the weak coupling regime, which provides the opportunity for quantum manipulation of macroscopic mechanical systems.

Abstract:A new method based on coherent feedback control theory is proposed to cool the optomechanical resonator. In this study, we focus on the weak-driving strong-coupling two-mode optomechanical system, which creates nonlinear coupling regime between cavity modes and the mechanical mode. By means of our design, two cavity resonators are coherently connected with each other, which constructs a closed quantum feedback loop. In the framework of SLH notation, we obtained the Hamiltonian and master equation of the two-mode optomechanical system. The numerical simulation shows that the method is efficient for cooling the mechanical resonators to the ground state.

Abstract:In this paper, a hybrid intracavity squeezing optomechanical cooling system is proposed to achieve ground state cooling. The results show that the quantum backaction heating can be completely suppressed by adding nonlinear medium. The optimal squeezing parameters are obtained so that the final phonon number is significantly less than one. It is demonstrated that the mechanical resonator can be cooled to the ground state by adjusting the parameters between the two cavities even in the unresolved sideband regime. The cooling rate is greatly faster than the linear optomechanical coupling due to the two-phonon cooling process in the quadratic coupling. In addition, the system has no strict requirements for an auxiliary cavity, which provides a new path for the subsequent research of ground state cooling.

Abstract:Cavity cooling of an atom works best on a cyclic optical transition in the strong coupling regime near resonance, where small cavity photon numbers suffice for trapping and cooling. Due to the absence of closed transitions a straightforward application to molecules fails: optical pumping can lead the particle into uncoupled states. An alternative operation in the far off-resonant regime generates only very slow cooling due to the reduced field-molecule coupling. We predict to overcome this by using a strongly driven ring-cavity operated in the sideband cooling regime. As in the optomechanical setups one takes advantage of a collectively enhanced field-molecule coupling strength using a large photon number. A linearized analytical treatment confirmed by full numerical quantum simulations predicts fast cooling despite the off-resonant small single molecule - single photon coupling. Even ground state cooling can be obtained by tuning the cavity field close to the Anti-stokes sideband for sufficiently high trapping frequency. Numerical simulations show quantum jumps of the molecules between the lowest two trapping levels, which can be be directly and continuously monitored via scattered light intensity detection.

Abstract:We show that the vibrations of an ion Coulomb crystal can be cooled to the zero-point motion through the optomechanical coupling with a high-finesse cavity. Cooling results from the interplay between coherent scattering of cavity photons by the ions, which dynamically modifies the vibrational spectrum, and cavity losses, that dissipate motional energy. The cooling mechanism we propose requires that the length scales of the crystal and the cavity are mismatched so that the system is intrinsically frustrated, leading to the formation of defects (kinks). When the pump is strong enough, the anti-Stokes sidebands of all vibrational modes can be simultaneously driven. These dynamics can be used to prepare ultracold chains of dozens of ions within tens of milliseconds in state-of-the-art experimental setups. In addition, we identify parameter regimes of the optomechanical interactions where individual localized modes can be selectively manipulated, and monitored through the light at the cavity output. These dynamics exemplify robust quantum reservoir engineering of strongly-correlated mesoscopic systems and could find applications in optical cooling of solids.

Abstract:Cooling macroscopic objects is of importance for both fundamental and applied physics. Here we study the optomechanical cooling in a hybrid system which consists of a cloud of atoms coupled to a cavity optomechanical system. On one hand, the asymmetric Fano or electromagnetically induced transparency resonance is explored and the steady-state cooling limits of resonators with frequency omega(m) are analytically obtained, permitting ground-state cooling of massive low-frequency resonators beyond the resolved sideband limit. On the other hand, due to the excitation-saturation effect, the validity of cooling requires the number of atoms to be much larger than the number of steady-state excitations, which is proportional to omega(-2)(m). Thus, this limitation plays a minor role in cooling higher-frequency resonators, but becomes important for macroscopic lower-frequency resonators. Under such limitation on the number of atoms, the optimal parameters are quantified. Our study can be a guideline for both theoretical and experimental study of cooling macroscopic objects in atom-optomechanical hybrid systems.

Abstract:An optomechanical microcavity can considerably enhance the interaction between light and mechanical motion by confining light to a sub-wavelength volume. However, this comes at the cost of an increased optical loss rate. Therefore, microcavity-based optomechanical systems are placed in the unresolved-sideband regime, preventing sideband-based ground-state cooling. A pathway to reduce optical loss in such systems is to engineer the cavity mirrors, i.e., the optical modes that interact with the mechanical resonator. In our work, we analyze such an optomechanical system, whereby one of the mirrors is strongly frequency-dependent, i.e., a suspended Fano mirror. This optomechanical system consists of two optical modes that couple to the motion of the suspended Fano mirror. We formulate a quantum-coupled-mode description that includes both the standard dispersive optomechanical coupling as well as dissipative coupling. We solve the Langevin equations of the system dynamics in the linear regime showing that ground-state cooling from room temperature can be achieved even if the cavity is per se not in the resolved-sideband regime, but achieves effective sideband resolution through strong optical mode coupling. Importantly, we find that the cavity output spectrum needs to be properly analyzed with respect to the effective laser detuning to infer the phonon occupation of the mechanical resonator. Our work also predicts how to reach the regime of nonlinear quantum optomechanics in a Fano-based microcavity by engineering the properties of the Fano mirror.

Cooling of Mechanical Resonator in a Double-Cavity System with Two-Level Atomic Ensemble

Abstract:We propose a hybrid optomechanical system to achieve the ground state cooling of mechanical resonator by an electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT)-like cooling mechanism. This system is composed of a mechanical resonator and two coupled single-mode cavities, and a two-level atomic ensemble simultaneously trapped in a standard optomechanical cavity. It is found that in the presence of a two-level atomic ensemble, the optical noise spectrum is split into an EIT-like spectrum. In particular, we investigate the effect of the atomic ensemble coupling strength on the EIT-like spectrum, indicating that the atomic ensemble coupling strength greatly increases the asymmetry of the EIT spectrum. Furthermore, we analyze the optimal conditions for achieving the maximum difference between cooling and heating processes in detail. In addition, we demonstrate that even in regions with unresolved sideband, the ground state cooling of mechanical resonator can be achieved by adjusting the coupling strength of the atomic ensemble. This research opens up the possibility for the application of cavity quantum optomechanics beyond the resolved sideband regime.
Cooling Mechanical Resonators to the Quantum Ground State from Room Temperature

Abstract:Ground-state cooling ofmesoscopicmechanical resonators is a fundamental requirement for testing of quantum theory and for implementation of quantum information. We analyze the cavity optomechanical cooling limits in the intermediate coupling regime, where the light-enhanced optomechanical coupling strength is comparable with the cavity decay rate. It is found that in this regime the cooling breaks through the limits in both the strong-coupling and the weak-coupling regimes. The lowest cooling limit is derived analytically under the optimal conditions of cavity decay rate and coupling strength. In essence, cooling to the quantum ground state requires Q(m) > 2.4n(th), with Q(m) being the mechanical quality factor and n(th) being the thermal phonon number. Remarkably, ground-state cooling is achievable starting from room temperature, when the mechanical Q-frequency product Q(m)upsilon(m) > 1.5 x 10(13) Hz and both the cavity decay rate and the coupling strength exceed the thermal decoherence rate. Our study provides a general framework for optimizing the backaction cooling of mesoscopic mechanical resonators.

Abstract:Cavity optomechanical systems provide powerful platforms to manipulate photons and phonons, open potential applications for modern optical communications and precise measurements. With the refrigeration and ground-state cooling technologies, studies of cavity optomechanics are making significant progress towards the quantum regime including nonclassical state preparation, quantum state tomography, quantum information processing, and future quantum internet. With further research, it is found that abundant physical phenomena and important applications in both classical and quantum regimes appeal as they have a strong optomechanical nonlinearity, which essentially depends on the single-photon optomechanical coupling strength. Thus, engineering the optomechanical interactions and improving the single-photon optomechanical coupling strength become very important subjects. In this article, we first review several mechanisms, theoretically proposed for enhancing optomechanical coupling. Then, we review the experimental progresses on enhancing optomechanical coupling by optimizing its structure and fabrication process. Finally, we review how to use novel structures and materials to enhance the optomechanical coupling strength. The manipulations of the photons and phonons at the level of strong optomechanical coupling are also summarized.
Ground-State Cooling of A Dispersively Coupled Optomechanical System in the Unresolved Sideband Regime Via A Dissipatively Coupled Oscillator

Abstract:In the optomechanical cooling of a dispersively coupled oscillator, it is only possible to reach the oscillator ground state in the resolved sideband regime, where the cavity-mode linewidth is smaller than the resonant frequency of the mechanical oscillator being cooled. In this paper, we show that the dispersively coupled system can be cooled to the ground state in the unresolved sideband regime using an ancillary oscillator, which has a high quality factor and is coupled to the same optical mode via dissipative interaction. The ancillary oscillator has a resonant frequency close to that of the target oscillator; thus, the ancillary oscillator is also in the unresolved sideband regime. We require only a single blue-detuned laser mode to drive the cavity.
Large cooperativity and microkelvin cooling with a three-dimensional optomechanical cavity

Abstract:In cavity optomechanics, light is used to control mechanical motion. A central goal of the field is achieving single-photon strong coupling, which would enable the creation of quantum superposition states of motion. Reaching this limit requires significant improvements in optomechanical coupling and cavity coherence. Here we introduce an optomechanical architecture consisting of a silicon nitride membrane coupled to a three-dimensional superconducting microwave cavity. Exploiting their large quality factors, we achieve an optomechanical cooperativity of 146,000 and perform sideband cooling of the kilohertz-frequency membrane motion to 34$\pm$5 $\mu$K, the lowest mechanical mode temperature reported to date. The achieved cooling is limited only by classical noise of the signal generator, and should extend deep into the ground state with superconducting filters. Our results suggest that this realization of optomechanics has the potential to reach the regimes of ultra-large cooperativity and single-photon strong coupling, opening up a new generation of experiments.

Abstract:In this study we propose ground state cooling scheme of an optomechanical system consisting of three optical cavities and two mechanical oscillators where the second cavity is linearly coupled to the other cavities and each mechanical resonator is optomechanically coupled to its respective optical cavity. We derive the optical conditions of cooling by calculating and plotting the optical force spectrum. Ground state cooling of the system is achievable in both the resonators simultaneously or in any one of them in unresolved sideband regime as the heating process can be effectively suppressed in optimal parameter values. It is also noted that the cooling process gets more efficient as more cavity modes are coupled due to addition of new interference paths. Finally the system has been numerically simulated and it is observed that the optimal conditions for cooling found in the simulation coincide with the ones derived analytically.
