Abstract:We propose a convex image segmentation model in a variational level set formulation. Both the local information and the global information are taken into consideration to get better segmentation results. We first propose a globally convex energy functional to combine the local and global intensity fitting terms. The proposed energy functional is then modified by adding an edge detector to force the active contour to the boundary more easily. We then apply the split Bregman method to minimize the proposed energy functional efficiently. By using a weight function that varies with location of the image, the proposed model can balance the weights between the local and global fitting terms dynamically. We have applied the proposed model to synthetic and real images with desirable results. Comparison with other models also demonstrates the accuracy and superiority of the proposed model.

Abstract:A large number of real images possess the property of intensity non-homogeneity, which hinders them from being segmented by many image segmentation approaches. Recently, region-based active contour models utilizing local information have been introduced to segment images with intensity non-homogeneity. However, all these models are not convex, thus a good initial guess is required, which limits their practical application. In this paper, we propose a convex neighbor-constrained active contour model to segment images with intensity non-homogeneity. With different shapes and sizes of the neighborhood for each point, our model can accurately capture the region information of a given image. Our model is convex, and therefore it is independent of the initial condition and allows for automatic segmentation. To minimize energy functional of the model, we choose the efficient and fast Split Bregman method. Experimental results on synthetic and real images demonstrate the superior performance of our model.

Abstract:This paper presents a local- and global-statistics-based active contour model for image segmentation by applying the globally convex segmentation method. We first propose a convex energy functional with a local-Gaussian-distribution-fitting term with spatially varying means and variances and an auxiliary global-intensity-fitting term. A weight function that varies dynamically with the location of the image is applied to adjust the weight of the global-intensity-fitting term dynamically. The weighted total variation norm is incorporated into the energy functional to detect boundaries easily. The split Bregman method is then applied to minimize the proposed energy functional more efficiently. Our model has been applied to synthetic and real images with promising results. With the local-Gaussian-distribution-fitting term, our model can also handle some texture images. Comparisons with other models show the advantages of our model.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel active contour model based on hybrid image fitting energy which utilizes both global and local image information is proposed. Two fitting images are constructed to approximate the original image and the square of the original image. Both global and local image information are incorporated into these two fitting images. Based on these two fitting images, a hybrid image fitting energy, which is then minimized in a variational level set framework to guide the evolving contours to the desired boundaries. The proposed approach is validated by experiments on both synthetic and real images. The experiments demonstrate that the proposed model is more efficient and robust for segmenting different kinds of images compared with several typical active contour models.
Improved Segmentation Model Combining Region and Edge Information for Inhomogeneous Images.

Abstract:In this paper we propose an improved image segmentation model combining the region and edge information for inhomogeneous images. First, we define a new energy functional in a variational level set formulation based on the region information, including the local and global intensity fitting terms. Then we incorporate the edge information into the energy functional by adding a non-negative edge detector function to detect boundaries more easily. We apply a weight function to control the influence of the local and global intensity information dynamically. Therefore, the proposed model can segment more general images more accurately, including images with intensity inhomogeneity. Finally, the special structure of the newly defined energy functional ensures that we can apply the split Bregman method to minimize it much more efficiently. We have applied our model to synthetic and real images and numerical results have demonstrated the high efficiency of the improved model.

Abstract:The segmentation of images with intensity inhomogeneity is always a challenging problem. For the segmentation of these kinds of images, traditional active contour models tend to reduce or correct the intensity inhomogeneity. In this chapter, we present a framework to make use of the intensity inhomogeneity in images to help to improve the segmentation performance. We use self-similarity measure to quantify the degree of the intensity inhomogeneity in images and incorporate it into a variational level set framework. The total energy functional of the proposed algorithm consists of three terms: a local region fitting term, an intensity inhomogeneity energy term, and a regularization term. The proposed model treats the intensity inhomogeneity in images as useful information rather than alleviates the effect of it. The proposed method is applied to segment various intensity inhomogeneous images with promising segmentation results. Comparison results also prove that the proposed method outperforms four state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract:In this paper, we incorporate the global convex segmentation method and the split Bregman technique into the region-scalable fitting energy model. The new proposed method based on the region-scalable model can draw upon intensity information in local regions at; a controllable scale, so that it can segment images with intensity inhomogeneity. Furthermore, with the application of the global convex segmentation method and the split Bregman technique, the method is very robust and efficient. By using a non-negative edge detector function to the proposed method, the algorithm can detect the boundaries more easily and achieve results that are very similar to those obtained through the classical geodesic active contour model. Experimental results for synthetic and real images have shown the robustness and efficiency of our method and also demonstrated the desirable advantages of the proposed method.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel region-based active contour model in the level set formulation for medical image segmentation. We define a unified fitting energy framework based on Gaussian probability distributions to obtain the maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) estimation. The energy term consists of a global energy term to characterize the fitting of global Gaussian distribution according to the intensities inside and outside the evolving curve, as well as a local energy term to characterize the fitting of local Gaussian distribution based on the local intensity information. In the resulting contour evolution that minimizes the associated energy, the global energy term accelerates the evolution of the evolving curve far away from the objects, while the local energy term guides the evolving curve near the objects to stop on the boundaries. In addition, a weighting function between the local energy term and the global energy term is proposed by using the local and global variances information, which enables the model to select the weights adaptively in segmenting images with intensity inhomogeneity. Extensive experiments on both synthetic and real medical images are provided to evaluate our method, show significant improvements on both efficiency and accuracy, as compared with the popular methods.

Abstract:Intensity inhomogeneities often occur in real-world images and may cause considerable difficulties in image segmentation. In order to overcome the difficulties caused by intensity inhomogeneities, we propose a region-based active contour model that draws upon intensity information in local regions at a controllable scale. A data fitting energy is defined in terms of a contour and two fitting functions that locally approximate the image intensities on the two sides of the contour. This energy is then incorporated into a variational level set formulation with a level set regularization term, from which a curve evolution equation is derived for energy minimization. Due to a kernel function in the data fitting term, intensity information in local regions is extracted to guide the motion of the contour, which thereby enables our model to cope with intensity inhomogeneity. In addition, the regularity of the level set function is intrinsically preserved by the level set regularization term to ensure accurate computation and avoids expensive reinitialization of the evolving level set function. Experimental results for synthetic and real images show desirable performances of our method.

Abstract:<p>This paper presents a novel global and local fuzzy image fitting (GLFIF) based active contour model for image segmentation. First, we design two fitted images: global fuzzy fitted image (GFFI) and local fuzzy fitted image (LFFI). Next, the energy function including a global term and a fitting term is constructed. The global term comes from the fuzzy energy-based active contour (FEAC) model to balance the importance of the object and background while the fitting term is based on GFFI and LFFI to handle the intensity inhomogeneity in given images. Then, we prove the energy function to be convex, which can ensure the segmentation results independent of initialization. Finally, unlike the FEAC model by computing the change of pixel-by-pixel energy function, a direct method is utilized to calculate the difference between the old and new energy functions in the whole image for each iteration to update the pseudo level set function. Experiments on synthetic and real images show that the proposed model is more robust than the popular active contour models for segmenting the images with noise, blurred boundaries, and intensity inhomogeneity. Abstract:In this paper, we propose a region-based active contour model that draws upon image information in local regions at a controllable scale, from local to global. A data fitting energy with a kernel is defined in terms of a contour that segments the image and two fitting functions that approximate local image intensities on the two sides of the contour. This energy is then incorporated into a variational level set framework. Due to the kernel in the data fitting energy, local image intensity variations are naturally taken into account. Abstract:The existing active contour models (ACMs) based on bias field (BF) correction mostly rely on a single BF assumption and lack in-depth discussion on the convexity of the energy functional, often leading to the problem of local minima. To address this issue, this paper introduces a dual BF and proposes a convex level-set (LS) method based on multiplicative-additive (MA) model to achieve global minima. Firstly, a MA model is adopted as the fidelity term, and a kernel function is introduced to adjust the size of the intensity inhomogeneous neighborhood, enhancing the adaptability to intensity inhomogeneity. Then, the convex LS function is embedded in the variational framework to ensure convexity of each variable in the energy functional. This transformation turns the segmentation problem into a convex optimization problem. By introducing the total variation regularization term to smooth the LS function, the model's resistance to noise is effectively enhanced. Finally, by minimizing the proposed energy functional, image segmentation and BF correction are successfully achieved. Experimental results validate the global minima property of our model, while also demonstrating good flexibility in the initial contour. The proposed model achieves superior segmentation results compared to other classical ACMs on various types of images.

Abstract:Segmentation of images with intensity inhomogeneity is a significant task in the field of image processing, especially in medical image processing and analysis. Some local region-based models work well on handling intensity inhomogeneity, but they are always sensitive to contour initialization and high noise. In this paper, we present an adaptive segmentation model for images with intensity inhomogeneity in the form of partial differential equation. Firstly, a global intensity fitting term and a local intensity fitting term are constructed by employing the global and local image information, respectively. Secondly, a tradeoff function is defined to adjust adaptively the weight between two fitting terms, which is based on the neighborhood contrast of image pixel. Finally, a weighted regularization term related to local entropy is used to ensure the smoothness of evolution curve. Meanwhile, a distance regularization term is added for stable level set evolution. Experimental results show that the proposed model without initial contour can segment inhomogeneous images stably and effectively, which thereby avoiding the influence of contour initialization on segmentation results. Besides, the proposed model works better on noise images comparing with two relevant segmentation models.

Abstract:According to Bayesian classification criteria,an improved level set method for image segmenta-tion based on local and global information is proposed.Firstly,a local energy term based on local intensity infor-mation is defined.It can guide the evolving curve near the target settled on the boundaries.Secondly,a global energy term is built according to the global intensity information,so as to accelerate the evolution of the evol-ving curve far away from the target.Finally,a unified level set framework is proposed which combines the local energy term and global energy term together to improve the efficiency of segmentation and deal with images with intensity inhomogeneity.Experimental results show that this model is robust to the position of initial contour. In addition,it can obtain prod satisfying results in segmenting images with intensity inhomogeneity.

Abstract:This paper presents a fast multiphase segmentation model for inhomogeneous images by incorporating the multiphase formulation of the local and global intensity fitting energy model and the split Bregman method. By applying the globally convex image segmentation idea, we first define a new energy functional, which is then modified by incorporating information from the edge. A weight function that varies dynamically with the location of the image is applied to balance the weights between the local and global intensity fitting terms. The split Bregman method is then applied to minimize our energy functional much more efficiently. Our model can segment more general images accurately, especially images with inhomogeneity. Image Segmentation Using a Level Set Method Based on Local Energy and Gradient

Abstract:To achieve quick and exact segmentations for intensity inhomogeneous images with complicated structures,we propose a novel level set method based on local region energy and gradient sensitivity,and initialize the level set automatically using the global intensity information.It is an improvement of minimization of region-scalable fitting energy with the introduction of two gradient sensitive energy functions.In this model,the local region energy based on the gray fitting functions acts as an external drive,which has an advantage in segmenting intensity inhomogeneous images.Gradient sensitive items can determine their drive directions of level sets adaptively according to image features.The external one draws zero level sets to the object boundaries,while the internal one pushes zero level sets out of intensity homogenous regions.Thereby,our method not only speeds up the convergence and improves robustness of level sets,but also copes with weak boundaries as the gradient sensitivity could be adjusted to respond to different gradient intensities.Meanwhile,interactive initialization is unnecessary.Experiment results demonstrate that our method has faster convergence,better robustness and good performance in segmenting intensity inhomogeneous images.

Abstract:Interregion contrast is crucial for image segmentation, but it has not been explicitly incorporated into popular region-based active contour models, such as Chan-Vese model and region-scalable fitting model. We integrate the interregion contrast into the active contour model in a level set formulation. The major contribution of this paper is weighting the interregion contrast by a labeling function to define a difference energy. The labeling function controls the integration region of the difference energy. It enables the proposed method to be applicable to images with intensity inhomogeneity, since the high contrast between local regions on the two sides of the object boundary. Moreover, the major part of the data term can be computed out of iterations with the labeling function, which reduces much computation time. The integration of global and local contrast into the energy functional also accelerates the curve propagation. Abstract:In this paper, we propose an efficient active contour model for multiphase image segmentation in a variational level set formulation. Abstract:The segmentation of intensity inhomogeneity images is always a challenging problem. There are two kinds of intensity inhomogeneities, one associated with the imaging devices and illumination variations, and the other associated with the essential characteristics of the intensities in objects and backgrounds. We name the second kind of intensity inhomogeneity as intensity complexity. In this paper, we focus on the segmentation of the images with intensity complexity. Our main argument is to quantify the complex intensities and convert them into useful features to improve segmentation accuracy. Two new quantities called the region intensity complexity index (RIC-Index) and factor (RIC-Factor) are introduced to quantify the intensity complexity. Then the quantified intensity complexity is incorporated into a variational level set framework. The total energy functional of the proposed framework consists of the following three items: a region intensity complexity term, a local region fitting energy term, and an edge-based energy term. The first term is defined by exploiting the region intensity complexity factor of the images. Mean and variance are utilized in the local region fitting energy to describe the image texture information. The last term of the energy functional, which is also derived from the region intensity complexity factor, incorporates the significant edge information. By integrating these three terms, the proposed model can handle intensity complexity images, especially two kinds of images: one with complex intensities in the objects, and the other with complex intensities in the backgrounds. The experimental results on 40 intensity complexity images and 1000 natural images from the Extended Complex Scene Saliency Dataset have indicated that our proposed algorithm can produce satisfactory segmentation results in comparison with five state-of-the-art methods and a deep learning approach.

Abstract:In the present article, this paper provides a method for fast image segmentation for computer vision, which is based on a level set method. One dominating challenge in image segmentation is uneven illumination and inhomogeneous intensity, which are caused by the position of a light source or convex surface. This paper proposes a variational model based on the Retinex theory. To be specific, firstly, this paper figures out the pre-fitting reflectance by using an algorithm in the whole image domain before iterations; secondly, it reconstructs the image domain using an additive model; thirdly, it uses the deviation between the global domain and low-frequency component to approximate the reflectance, which is the significant part of an energy function. In addition, a new regularization term has been put forward to extract the vanishing gradients. Furthermore, the new regularization term is capable of accelerating the segmentation process. Symmetry plays an essential role in constructing the energy function and figuring out the gradient flow of the level set.
