Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a hierarchical modulation scheme to improve power margin for orthogonal frequency division multiple access-passive optical networks (OFDMA-PONs). In a PON system, under the same launched optical power, optical network units (ONUs) have different power margins due to unequal distribution fiber lengths. The power margin of the PON system is determined by the ONU with the lowest power margin. In our proposed scheme, ONUs with long and short distribution fibers are grouped together, and downstream signals for the paired ONUs are mapped onto the same OFDM subcarriers using hierarchical modulation. In a pair of ONUs, part of the power margin of the ONU with short distribution fiber is re-allocated to the ONU with long distribution fiber. Therefore, the power margin of the ONU with the longest distribution fiber can be increased, leading to the power margin improvement of the PON system. Experimental results show that the hierarchical modulation scheme improves the power margin by 2.7 dB for an OFDMA-PON system, which can be used to support more users or extend transmission distance. Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a distance-adaptive bandwidth allocation scheme to realize high-capacity long-reach orthogonal frequency division multiple access passive optical network (OFDMA PON) with cost-effective electro-absorption modulator (EAM). In our scheme, the subcarriers in downstream OFDM signal are properly allocated to the optical network units (ONUs) with different fiber transmission lengths. By this means, the detrimental influence of power fading induced by dispersion and chirp can be avoided, thus all OFDM subcarriers can be modulated with high-order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) format, leading to a high transmission capacity. A proof-of-concept experiment is performed, in which three ONUs with transmission distances of 25, 50, and 100 km are assigned with different subcarriers, respectively. By using distance-adaptive bandwidth allocation technique, an OFDM signal of 34.5 Gb/s is successfully delivered to the ONUs with a bit error ratio (BER) lower than 2 × 10(-3).

Abstract:In order to efficiently deliver peer-to-peer (P2P) traffic in an orthogonal-frequency division multiplexing based passive optical network (OFDM-PON) system, the NC technology has been proposed to encode P2P traffic, thus reducing the P2P traffic loads. On the other hand, different ONUs may have different signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) to the OLT in the OFDM-PON system, and so applying NC to encode and delivery the P2P traffic between a high-SNR ONU and a low-SNR ONU may reduce the capacity of the link between the OLT and the high-SNR ONU. That is, the high-SNR ONU, which can apply a higher-order modulation format to receive data from the OLT, has to compromise on the low-SNR ONU to use a lower-order modulation format. In order to improve the network capacity and bandwidth utilization, hierarchical modulation (HM) is proposed to be integrated into the NC based OFDM-PON system, where the high-SNR ONU can apply a higher-order modulation format without degrading the performance of the low-SNR ONU in receiving its P2P traffic from the OLT. The NC and HM based OFDM-PON system structure in both uplink and downlink is illustrated. Extensive simulations are conducted to verify the feasibility of the proposed system. Also, the relation between power ratio of HM and the system performance under different network settings is discussed and analyzed via the simulations.

Abstract:Conventional OFDM transmission system uses a fixed-length Cyclic Prefix to counteract Inter-Symbol Interferences (ISI) caused by channel delay spreading under wireless mobile environment. This may cause considerable performance deterioration when the CP length is less than the channel RMS delay spread, or may decrease the system power and spectrum efficiency when it is much larger. A novel Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) transmission scheme is proposed in this paper to adapt the CP length to the variation of channel delay spread. AOFDM-VCPL utilizes the preamble or pilot sub-carriers of each OFDM packet to estimate the channel RMS delay spread; and then uses a criterion to calculate the CP length, which finally affects the OFDM transmitter. As illustrated in the simulation section, by deploying this scheme in a typical wireless environment, the system can transmit at data rate 11.5 Mb/s higher than conventional non-adaptive system while gaining a 0.65 dB power saving at the same BER performance.

Abstract:We propose a long reach double-side band (DSB) time-division-multiplexing PON architecture based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (TDM-OFDM-PON). To avoid severe power fading induced by chromatic dispersion for DSB long reach transmission, we adopt higher-order modulation and small guard-band between carrier and signal band. 20-Gb/s upstream long-reach DSB TDM-OFDM-PON transmission is experimentally demonstrated over 100-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF), enabled by 64-QAM OFDM modulation and 0.85-GHz carrier-to-signal guard-band.

Abstract:For the first time, we propose and demonstrate a novel three-level Signal allocation scheme OFDM PON architecture which makes the best use of OFDM characteristics. In the architecture, we produce five-carrier signal optically by MZM, use odd carriers modulating downlink data and retain even carriers for uplink data. Multiple signal distribution methods can be switched flexibly. By simulation, a small PON systems with four ONU based on this architecture was realized. Both the downlink and uplink transmission adopt 4-QAM-OFDM signal. The transmission rate will be demonstrated to exceed 10Gbit/s.

Abstract:A novel scheme to generate, transmit, and receive an optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) continuous phase modulation (CPM) signal, which is combining minimum shift keying (MSK) coding with OFDM optical modulation, for downlink application in a 4 x 2.5-Gb/s wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) passive optical access network, is proposed and experimentally validated. We also realize wavelength remodulation for carrying upstream on-off keying (OOK) data to reduce the cost budget at the optical network unit. The experimental results show that the power penalties for the downlink and the uplink data after transmission over 25-km SMF-28 fiber are 0.1 dB and smaller than 0.4 dB, respectively.

Abstract:A novel subband access scheme for multiband high-speed orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) passive optical network (PON) is proposed, where the granularity of the bandwidth allocation is as small as the bandwidth of just one subcarrier and the ONUs only receives the desired subcarriers according to the bandwidth allocation strategy from the whole downstream OFDM signal without band limitation. Since the ONUs do not have to receive a complete OFDM band, low-bandwidth and low-speed devices can be used to reduce ONU cost. The algorithm used in the scheme is also explained in detail, and a 1-Tb/s experimental system is successfully established to prove the feasibility of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel WDM-ROF-PON architecture based on 16QAM-OFDM modulation for bidirectional access networks is proposed and demonstrated. We theoretically investigate the operating principle of the system, in our simulation, the intensity modulation of 10Gb/s 16-quadrature-amplitude-modulation (16-QAM) orthogonal frequency-division-multiplexing (OFDM) signals are employed for downlink and the demodulated base-band signals are demonstrated, and the optical carrier is reused for uplink. Both the downstream and upstream signals have been transmitted over 40-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF-28) without optical dispersion compensation. Our theoretical analysis and numerical simulation results show the WDM-ROF-PON architecture will be a promising candidate in next generation optical networks.

Abstract:The introduction of OFDM into PON networks is to leverage the merits of OFDM to provide the flexibility and reduce the cost. In this paper, we present our latest works on OFDM-PON. Firstly, we propose and demonstrate a novel OFDM-PON upstream transmission architecture with traffic aggregation by orthogonal band multiplexing. The multiplexed 10Gb/s OFDM signal is collectively received. We also conduct a proof-of-concept experiment to verify the architecture. Secondly, we propose and experimentally demonstrate wavelet packet transform based OFDM (WPT-OFDM) using real-valued transforms, which enables the cost-effective intensity modulation/direct detection (IM/DD). Unlike conventional FFT-based OFDM, the need for cyclic prefix is eliminated due to the time-frequency localization properties of the wavelet.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel OFDM-PON upstream transmission architecture with traffic aggregation by orthogonal band multiplexing. The aggregated data streams that propagate in different fiber lengths from ONUs are collectively received and demodulated using one receiver, when the OFDM signals are in a synchronous state. In simulation, four optical network units (ONUs) transmit upstream data at four different frequency bands, and use orthogonal band multiplexing with a proper configuration. The orthogonal band multiplexed 10-Gb/s OFDM signal is collectively received to validate the feasibility of the architecture. We also conduct a proof-of-concept experiment to verify the orthogonal band multiplexing and collective reception. We also verify that the tolerance to the time mismatch of the orthogonal band multiplexing is twice of the CP length.

Abstract:We present a bandwidth-elastic OFDM-PON scheme for upstream transmission with traffic aggregation by orthogonal band multiplexing. The provision of each ONU's frequency band can be set only by software reconfiguration without any hardware changes. Elastic bandwidth adjustment should meet the bandwidth requirement and transmission quality. With non-uniform subcarriers distribution and adaptive modulation, OFDM-PON can achieve a flexible bit rate and spectrum density to realize the elasticity in bandwidth. Non-uniform subcarriers distribution may bring power variation, which will degrade the transmission performance for the ONU with lower received power. This can be mitigated by adaptive power control according to the filling ratio of each ONU. Adaptive modulation format is used to balance the bandwidth requirement and transmission performance. In simulation, aggregated 20 Gb/s OFDM signal with both non-uniform subcarriers distribution and adaptive modulation format have been collectively received to verify the bandwidth elastic scheme. Abstract:A downstream transmitter based on comb source and injection-seeding scheme is proposed for long reach DWDM-PON with 12.5-GHz channel spacing. RSOAs are used in OLT and 1.25-Gbps data is directly modulated on each channel. The experimental results show that transmission over 150-km SMF is achieved.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel architecture for the SSB-ADM-based OFDM-PON system.Its downlink transmission is based on 10 Gbit/s SSB-based OFDM-4-QAM modulation,while the uplink transmission is based on 2.5 Gbit/s ASK modulation in the Time Division Multiple Access(TDMA) mode by using the other sideband retained in the downlink signals.This architecture can perfectly overcome the Rayleigh backscattering effect in the bidirectional transmission.When the backscattering effect is considered,the power penalty will be <0.8 dB for downlink signals and <1.8 dB for uplink signals.

Abstract:We introduce digital coherent superposition (DCS) into optical access network and propose a DCS-OFDM-PON upstream transmission scheme using intensity modulator and collective self-coherent detection. The generated OFDM signal is real based on Hermitian symmetry, which can be used to estimate the common phase error (CPE) by complex conjugate subcarrier pairs without any pilots. In simulation, we transmit an aggregated 40 Gb/s optical OFDM signal from two ONUs. The transmission performance with DCS is slightly better after 25 km transmission without relative transmission time delay. The fiber distance for different ONUs to RN are not same in general and there is relative transmission time delay between ONUs, which causes inter-carrier-interference (ICI) power increasing and degrades the transmission performance. The DCS can mitigate the ICI power and the DCS-OFDM-PON upstream transmission outperforms the conventional OFDM-PON. The CPE estimation is by using two pairs of complex conjugate subcarriers without redundancy. The power variation can be 9 dB in DCS-OFDM-PON, which is enough to tolerate several kilometers fiber length difference between the ONUs. (C) 2016 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:We summarize several advanced modulation formats for high capacity transmission system with high spectral efficiency. We show that multilevel 8QAM, 16QAM, 32QAM and 64QAM optical signals can be generated by commercial optical and electrical devices. Employing these multilevel modulation formats, we have realized PDM-36QAM 64Tb/s signals transmission over 320km fiber. We also present some experimental results of 1Tb/s and 10Tb/s per channel signal transmission by advanced modulation formats.
