Abstract:Elastic optical network (EON) has been proposed recently as a spectrum-efficient optical layer to adapt to rapidly-increasing traffic demands instead of current deployed wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) optical network. In contrast with conventional WDM optical cross-connect (OXCs) based on wavelength selective switches (WSSs), the EON OXCs are based on spectrum selective switches (SSSs) which are much more expensive than WSSs, especially for large-scale switching architectures. So the transition cost from WDM OXCs to EON OXCs is a major obstacle to realizing EON. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a transition OXC (TOXC) structure based on 2-stage cascading switching architectures, which make full use of available WSSs in current deployed WDM OXCs to reduce number and port count of required SSSs. Moreover, we propose a contention-aware spectrum allocation (CASA) scheme for EON built with the proposed TOXCs. We show by simulation that the TOXCs reduce the network capital expenditure transiting from WDM optical network to EON about 50%, with a minor traffic blocking performance degradation and about 10% accommodated traffic number detriment compared with all-SSS EON OXC architectures.

Abstract:In this paper, we proposed a novel architecture of MG-OXC (Multi-Granularity Optical Cross Connect) that can support both the static and dynamic optical switching. It can obviously reduce the complexity of the switching matrix and the number of the switching ports without increasing the network blocking probability. We gave the ILP model to describe the multi-granularity switching optical network. This model is applicable not only to the novel MG-OXC, but also to the traditional MG-OXC network. We also proposed a novel routing and wavelength assignment algorithm for dealing with multi-granularity traffic in optical network that was set up by this kind of novel MG-OXC. It is shown that when the network load is low, the network blocking probability of the novel MG-OXC will be quite lower than the ordinary multi-layer and single-layer MG-OXC with the strategy of the shortest wavelength path and random choice of the wavelength. While when the network load is comparatively higher, the network blocking probabilities of these structures are more or less the same.

Abstract:Recently, spatial-division-multiplexing based on weakly coupled multicore or few-mode fibers has been proposed for short-reach switching scenarios, in which spatial mode can be used as an independent switching dimension. Fully connected cross-connections (OXC) converting all spatial modes and wavelengths into one-dimensional switching ports and followed by huge switching array can provide nonblocking switching, but the hardware implementation is very complex and expensive. In this paper, we propose a layered OXC structure consisting of intramode sub-OXCs and intermode switching bridges. Then, a scattered-spectrum-scan intramode-first routing and spectrum allocation (SSS-IMF-RSA) scheme is designed, in which only a few discrete spectrum segments instead of the whole spectrum should be scanned for spectrum allocation. The switching will be performed preferentially for the wavelength dimension because of mature switching capability and less searching time. We show by simulation that the proposed layered OXC with the SSS-IMF-RSA scheme can achieve similar blocking performance to fully connected OXCs with up to 76.1% hardware scale reduction and 93% searching time reduction for network accommodation. The proposed OXC and RSA scheme greatly decrease the requirements for the port number of WSS and enable components reuse to achieve smooth evolution.

Abstract:The rise of big data and cloud computing applications is driving an explosion in the growth of data centers (DCs), and is already resulting in networking bottlenecks and performance degradation. The size and capacity of DCs are being constrained by the traditional packet-based switching architectures due to high energy consumption.Introducing optical circuit switching (OCS) into the packet-based switching architectures becomes a promising solution to reduce energy consumption in future large-scale high-capacity DC networks. Current fiber/wavelength-switching-based OCS, however, requires each lightpath to occupy the full bandwidth of a fiber/wavelength, leading to coarse switching granularity, low bandwidth utilization, and weak scalability. In order to raise bandwidth utilization in high-capacity DC networks, we proposed and realized a novel hybrid packet/fine-grained optical switching architecture in a prototype DC test bed. In this architecture, optical time slice switching (OTSS) is used for sub-wavelength optical switching in the temporal domain. With high-precision time synchronization and accurate control of optical switches, ultra-fine switching granularity and much higher bandwidth utilization can be achieved. Similar to the spectrum fragments in spectrum-sliced elastic optical switching networks, time slot fragments exist in OTSS networks, which hinder the improvement of bandwidth utilization. In this work, we propose a new overlay hybrid packet/OTSS DC network architecture to get full utilization of time slot fragments. Compared with the peer-to-peer hybrid packet/OTSS architecture, the overlay architecture achieves better bandwidth utilization.

Abstract:The increasing demand for network bandwidth highlights the critical need to enhance optical transmission systems. Utilizing the entire C-band for a single optical channel(OCh) eliminates the requirement for wavelength switching, prompting the emergence of spatial channel networks (SCNs). SCNs transform the optical layer into hierarchical spatial division multiplexing (SDM) and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) layers through the implementation of hierarchical optical cross-connects (HOXCs). A HOXC comprises a spatial channel cross-connect (SXC) for spatial bypass switching and multiple wavelength cross-connects (WXCs) for wavelength channel switching, ensuring efficient optical transmission. Therefore, the design of the HOXC plays a pivotal role in determining both the device cost and network performance in SCNs. This study investigates the impact of wavelength switching granularity on core-selective switch (CSS)-based HOXC architectures. We propose an adaptive dynamic Routing, Spatial Channel, and Spectrum Assignment (RSCSA) algorithm to solve routing and resource allocation problems in SCNs. By examining SCN designs with varying wavelength switching granularities, we assess the overall network deployment cost, considering both network throughput and spectrum resource utilization. Our findings indicate that adjusting the granularity of wavelength switching in SCNs can significantly affect device costs and performance, highlighting the importance of identifying an optimal SCN design that strikes a balance between these factors. These insights offer valuable guidance for the practical planning and management of future SCN deployments.

Abstract:Cloud services are fundamentally supported by Data Center Networks (DCNs). With the fast growth of cloud services, the scale of DCNs increases rapidly, leading to a big concern on system scalability due to multiple constraints. Based on optical switching and transmission, this paper proposes a scalable DCN architecture with distributed placement of optical switches and server racks at different nodes in a given optical network. This solves the scalability issue by relaxing power and cooling constraints, and reducing the number of (electronic) switches using high-capacity optical switches, as well as simplifying internal connections of the DCN using wavelengths in the optical network. Moreover, the distributed optical switches provide service access interfaces to demands in vicinities, and thus reduce the transmission cost of the external traffic. The major concern is the additional delay and cost for remote transmissions of the DCN internal traffic. To this end, we study the component placement problem in DCNs under a given set of external demands and internal traffic patterns. By leveraging among multiple conflicting factors such as scalability and internal overhead of the DCN as well as the transmission cost of external traffic, we propose an ILP (Integer Linear Program) to minimize the overall cost of a DCN while satisfying all service demands in the network. This addresses both scalability and cost minimization issues from a network point of view.

Abstract:Optical Burst Switching (OBS) has been proposed as a new paradigm to achieving a practical balance between Optical Circuit Switching (OCS) and Optical Packet Switching (OPS). Hybrid Optical Networks (HON) that combines OCS and OBS has emerged to grant the OBS network the ability to support connection-oriented applications. Although efficient in terms of reducing the burst loss probability as well as improving the overall network performance, it provides a limited degree of Quality of Service (QoS). What we mean by QoS is the capability of a network to provide a guaranteed level of availability while satisfying strict limits on delay. In this paper, we propose new hybrid architecture for OBS networks. The proposed architecture qualifies the OBS network to support different classes of QoS.

Abstract:All-optical switching technology without optical-electrical-optical(OEO)conversion creates transparency in an optical network and greatly reduces the complexity and cost of the node.Multi-granularity optical cross-connect reduces the scale and complexity of the switching matrix—which indicates the direction of the wavelength division multiplexing(WDM)optical network.With the development of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM),bandwidth-variable optical node technology has become the focus of attention.This paper introduces the switching architecture of optical cross-connect(OXC)and multi-granularity optical cross-connect based on wavelength.It also introduces the node switching architecture of OFDM and single-carrier frequency division multiplexing(SCFDM).An experiments with bandwidth-variable reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexer(ROADM)and OXC is presented.The node in the proposed optical switching has Pbit/s capability.

Abstract:Data centers have to sustain the rapid growth of data traffic due to the increasing demand of band-width-hungry Internet services. The current fat tree topology causes communication bottlenecks in the server interaction process, resulting in power-hungry O-E-O conversions that limit the minimum latency and the power efficiency of these systems. As a result, recent efforts have advocated that all optical data center networks (DCNs) have the capability to adapt to traffic requirements on demand. We present the design, implementation, and evaluation of a cascaded microelectromechanical systems switches-based DCN architecture which dynamically changes its topology and link capacities, thereby achieving unprecedented flexibility to adapt to dynamic traffic patterns. We analyze it under a data center traffic model to determine its suitability for this type of environment. The proposed architecture can be scaled to 3300 input/output ports by available experimental components with low blocking probability and latency. The blocking probability and latency are about 0.03 and 72 ms at a moderate traffic load for 32 input/output ports based on our numerical results, which are much smaller than the results for 4 input/output ports which are 0.13 and 235 ms, respectively. Abstract:Multi-granularity switching in optical layer has gain significant importance due to the reduction of size and cost of the optical cross-connect. In this paper, we propose a novel structure of MG-OXC, named two-layer MG-OXC, and also give a new graph model for describing the function of the all kinds of MG-OXC. The network states can be represented completely through our auxiliary graph. In such an auxiliary graph, the optical tunnel allocation in multi-granularity switching network is reduced to the min-cost path rind problem, and different traffic grooming policies can be archived simultaneously. We compare the performance of the two-layer MG-OXC to the normal three-layer MG-OXC and single-layer MG-OXC by the algorithm we proposed through simulation, and conclude that the novel MG-OXC can get very close performance to three-layer MG-OXC but smaller size of switching matrix. The simulation also proved the algorithms we proposed performs better than traditional RWA algorithms dealing the routing and wavelength sub problems separately.

Abstract:In large-scale data center (DC) and high performance computing (HPC) interconnect networks, end-to-end latency becomes a fatal problem due to the processing and queuing delays of electronic packet switching (EPS) at intermediate switching points. Introducing optical switching into DC and HPC networks can provide a potential solution to the latency problem by establishing low-latency optical bypass (end-to-end lightpath). However, the number of connections that can be provided by current coarse-grained optical circuit switching (OCS) technology is far less than the required amount for all-to-all communication in a hundreds-of-thousands-nodes large-scale system, and this will weaken its effect in reducing latency. Optical packet switching has a much finer granularity compared with OCS; however, the lack of adequate technologies for optical buffering makes it difficult to avoid packet collision. In this paper, we investigate the relationship among network scale, granularity and latency, and introduce the use of our proposed fine-grained optical time slice switching (OTSS) in DC and HPC networks over arbitrary topologies. Simulation results under 6×6 2-D Torus topology demonstrate the advantage of OTSS in end-to-end latency compared with conventional EPS and spectrum-flexible wavelength switching (WS).
