Abstract:The Nine-Year WMAP results combined with other cosmological data seem to indicate an enhanced favor for the phantom regime, comparing to previous analyses. This behavior, unless reversed by future observational data, suggests to consider the phantom regime more thoroughly. In this work we provide three modified gravitational scenarios in which we obtain the phantom realization without the appearance of ghosts degrees of freedom, which plague the naive approaches on the subject, namely the Brans-Dicke type gravity, the scalar-Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, and the F ( R ) gravity, which are moreover free of perturbative instabilities. The phantom regime seems to favor the gravitational modification instead of the universe-content alteration.

Abstract:The self-accelerating universe realizes the accelerated expansion of the universe at late times by large-distance modification of general relativity (GR) without a cosmological constant. The Dvali–Gabadadze–Porrati (DGP) braneworld model provides an explicit example of the self-accelerating universe. Recently, the DGP model became very popular for studying the observational consequences of the modified gravity models as an alternative to dark energy models in GR. However, it has been shown that the self-accelerating universe in the DGP model contains a ghost at the linearized level. The ghost carries negative energy densities and it leads to the instability of the spacetime. In this review, we review the origin of the ghost in the self-accelerating universe and explore the physical implications of the existence of the ghost.

Phantom fluid cosmology: Impact of a phantom hidden sector on cosmological observables

Abstract:Phantom scalar theories are widely considered in cosmology, but rarely at the quantum level, where they give rise to negative-energy ghost particles. These cause decay of the vacuum into gravitons and photons, violating observational gamma-ray limits unless the ghosts are effective degrees of freedom with a cutoff $\Lambda$ at the few-MeV scale. We update the constraints on this scale, finding that $\Lambda \lesssim 19$ MeV. We further explore the possible coupling of ghosts to a light, possibly massless, hidden sector particle, such as a sterile neutrino. Vacuum decays can then cause the dark matter density of the universe to grow at late times. The combined phantom plus dark matter fluid has an effective equation of state $w < -1$, and functions as a new source of dark energy. We derive constraints from cosmological observables on the rate of vacuum decay into such a phantom fluid. We find a mild preference for the ghost model over the standard cosmological one, and a modest amelioration of the Hubble and $S_8$ tensions.

Abstract:Two cosmological models with non-phantom matter having the same expansion of the universe as phantom cosmologies are constructed. The first model is characterized by the evolving gravitational "constant" $G$ and a dark energy component with a non-conserved energy-momentum tensor. The second model includes two interacting components, the dark energy component and the matter component. Closed form solutions are obtained for the constant values of model parameters and constraints on the parameters of each model from cosmological observations are outlined. For both models it is explicitly shown how the components of each model produce the expansion of the universe characteristic of phantom cosmologies, despite the absence of phantom energy. These findings stress the interpretation of phantom energy as an effective description of the more complex dynamics of non-phantom matter.

Generalized Ghost Dark Energy in f(Q) Gravity

Abstract:In this manuscript, we use the correspondence principle to construct the generalized ghost dark energy $f(Q)$ model, where $Q$ is the non-metricity. For this purpose, we use the Friedman-Robertson-Walker universe model with power-law scale factor. The energy density in this model linearly depends on the Hubble parameter, with a sub-leading term of $H^{2}$, resulting in an energy density $\rho_D=\xi H+\zeta H^{2}$, where $\xi$ and $\zeta$ are arbitrary constants. We reconstruct interacting fluid scenario of this dark energy with dark matter. The reformulated $f(Q)$ gravity model shows how different epochs of the cosmic history can be reproduced by this modified gravity model. The physical characteristics of the model are discussed through the equation of state parameter with the planes of $\omega_{D}-\omega'_{D}$ and $r-s$. We also explore the stability criteria for the interacting model using the squared speed of sound. The equation of state parameter indicates phantom phase of the universe and the squared speed of sound represents stability of the interacting model. The $(\omega_{D}-\omega^{\prime}_{D})$-plane indicates freezing region, while the $(r-s)$-plane corresponds to the Chaplygin gas. We conclude that our findings coincide with the latest observational data.

Abstract:The recently proposed infrared modification of gravity through the introduction of a ghost scalar field results in a number of interesting cosmological and phenomenological implications. In this paper, we derive the exact cosmological solutions for a number of scenarios where at late stages, the ghost behaves like dark matter, or dark energy. The full solutions give valuable information about the non-linear regime beyond the asymptotic first order analysis presented in the literature. The generic feature is that these ghost cosmologies give rise to smooth transitions between radiation dominated phases (or more general power-law expansions) at early epochs and ghost dark matter resp. ghost dark energy dominated late epochs. The current age of our universe places us right at the non-linear transition phase. By studying the evolution backwards in time, we find that the dominance of the ghost over ordinary baryonic matter and radiative contributions persists back to the earliest times such that the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker geometry is dictated to a good approximation by the ghost alone. We also find that the Jeans instability occurs in the ghost dark energy scenario at late times, while it is absent in the ghost dark matter scenario.

Abstract:The quanta of phantom dark energy models are negative energy particles, whose maximum magnitude of energy $|E|$ must be less than a cutoff $\Lambda\lesssim 20\,$MeV. They are produced by spontaneous decay of the vacuum into phantoms plus normal particles. I review general cosmological constraints that have been derived from the effects of such phantom fluid production, and a possible application: the generation of boosted dark matter or radiation that could be directly detected. Recent excess events from the DAMIC experiment can be well-fit by such processes.

Abstract:This study investigates the reconstruction technique for the generalized ghost pilgrim dark energy model within the framework of gravity ( represents the non-metricity and denotes the trace of the energy-momentum tensor). For this purpose, we implement a correspondence scheme for the configuration of dust fluid within a flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe. We examine the cosmic behavior of the reconstructed model by studying cosmological diagnostic parameters in conjunction with phase planes. The analysis reveals that within certain ranges of free parameters, the equation of state parameter characterizes a phantom regime. The trajectories on the plane indicate a freezing region, while the phase plane of corresponds to the Chaplygin gas model. The squared sound speed parameter provides stable model for the evolutionary paradigm of the universe. It is worth noting that our results closely align with the recent observational data.

We analyze the cosmological implications of our model using the equation of state parameter, $\omega_{GGDE}-\omega'_{GGDE}$ and the $r-s$ planes. We also examine stability of the model by considering squared speed of sound parameter. The equation of state parameter shows the phantom era, while the squared speed of sound indicates a stable generalized ghost dark energy model throughout the cosmic evolution. Abstract:The universe evolution from inflation to late-time acceleration is investigated in a unified way, using a two-component fluid constituted from extended Chaplygin gas alongside a phantom scalar field. We extract solutions for the various cosmological eras, focusing on the behavior of the scale factor, the various density parameters and the equation-of-state parameter. Furthermore, we extract and discuss bouncing solutions. Finally, we examine the perturbations of the model, ensuring their stability and extracting the predictions for the tensor-to-scalar ratio.

A flat space-time model of the Universe

Abstract:We propose a model of the Universe based on Minkowski flat space-time metric. In this model the space-time does not evolve. Instead the matter evolves such that all the mass parameters increase with time. We construct a model based on unimodular gravity to show how this can be accomplished within the framework of flat space-time. We show that the model predicts the Hubble law if the masses increase with time. Furthermore we show that it fits the high z supernova data in a manner almost identical to the standard Big Bang model. Furthermore we show that at early times the Universe is dominated by radiative energy density. The phenomenon of recombination also arises in our model and hence predicts the existence of CMBR. However a major difference with the standard Big Bang is that the radiative temperature and energy density does not evolve in our model. Furthermore we argue that the basic motivation for inflation is absent in our model.

Abstract:Motivated by recent developments in Cosmology we would like to consider an extension of the Ghost DE which we will name as varying Ghost DE. Ghost DE like other models was introduced recently as a possible way to explain accelerated expansion of the Universe. For the phenomenological origin of the varying Ghost dark energy in our Universe we can suggest an existence of some unknown dynamics between the Ghost Dark energy and a fluid which evaporated completely making sense of the proposed effect. Moreover, we assume that this was in the epochs and scales which are unreachable by present-day experiments, like in very early Universe. In this study we will investigate the model for cosmological validity. We will apply observational and causality constraints to illuminate physically correct behavior of the model from the phenomenological one. We saw that an interaction between the varying Ghost DE and cold DM (CDM) also provides a solution to the cosmological coincidence problem. And we found that the Ghost DE behaves as a fluid-like matter in early Universe.

Abstract:A higher derivative term is introduced in the kinetic energy of the Higgs lagrangian in the minimal Standard Model. A logically consistent and finite field theory is obtained when some excitations of the Higgs field are quantized with indefinite metric in the Hilbert space. The Landau ghost phenomenon of the conventional triviality problem is replaced by the state vectors of a complex ghost pair at a finite mass scale with observable physical consequences. It is shown that the ghost states exhibit unusual resonance properties and correspond to a complex conjugate pair of Pauli-Villars regulator masses in the euclidean path integral formulation of the theory. An argument is given that microscopic acausality effects associated with the ghost pair remain undetectable in scattering processes with realistic wave packets, and the S-matrix should exhibit unitarity in the observable sector of the Hilbert space.
Black holes, photon sphere, and cosmology in ghost-free $f(\mathcal{G})$ gravity

Abstract:The improved version of ghost-free $f(\mathcal{G})$ gravity introduced in Phys.~Lett.~B \textbf{631} (2005), 1-6 is proposed and investigated. It is demonstrated that improved ghost-free $f(\mathcal{G})$ gravity may be consistently applied to describe the expanding universe (with horizon) as well as the static spacetime like black holes. Interestingly, such a theory looks like a close avatar of scalar-Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity with the only difference that the scalar field is not a dynamical one so that many predictions of ghost-free $f(\mathcal{G})$ gravity are very similar to that of sEGB gravity. We discuss the gravitational wave in the improved model with the condition that the propagating speed of the gravitational wave is identical to that of the propagation speed of light. A model that describes inflation in the early universe and could satisfy the observational constraints is also constructed. The solution of ghost-free $f(\mathcal{G})$ gravity realising the given static spacetime with spherical symmetry is proposed. Some of such solutions realise explicitly the Reissner-Nordström black hole or the Hayward black hole, which is a regular black hole without curvature singularity, We also construct a black hole in our theory which contains the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) mass, the horizon radius, and the radius of the photon sphere as independent parameters. The radius of the black hole shadow in this model as well as photon sphere radius are estimated. It is shown that there exists a parameter region which satisfies the constraints coming from Event Horizon Telescope observations. Furthermore, we construct model where the radius of the black hole shadow or photon orbit is smaller than the horizon radius supposed from the ADM mass.

Abstract:We revisit ghost dark matter, the possibility that ghost condensation may serve as an alternative to dark matter. In particular, we investigate the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) background evolution and the large-scale structure (LSS) in the ΛGDM universe, i.e. a late-time universe dominated by a cosmological constant and ghost dark matter. The FRW background of the ΛGDM universe is indistinguishable from that of the standard ΛCDM universe if M≳1eV, where M is the scale of spontaneous Lorentz breaking. From the LSS we find a stronger bound: M≳10eV. For smaller M, ghost dark matter would have non-negligible sound speed after the matter-radiation equality, and thus the matter power spectrum would significantly differ from observation. These bounds are compatible with the phenomenological upper bound M≲100GeV known in the literature.

Abstract:We consider a possibility to construct a quantum-mechanical model of spacetime, where Planck size quantum black holes act as the fundamental constituents of space and time. Spacetime is assumed to be a graph, where black holes lie on the vertices. Our model implies that area has a discrete spectrum with equal spacing. At macroscopic length scales our model reproduces Einstein's field equation with a vanishing cosmological constant as a sort of thermodynamical equation of state of spacetime and matter fields. In the low temperature limit, where most black holes are assumed to be in the ground state, our model implies the Unruh and the Hawking effects, whereas in the high temperature limit we find, among other things, that black hole entropy depends logarithmically on the event horizon area, instead of being proportional to the area.
