Abstract:We experimentally investigate multigranularity optical subband switching functionality between two superchannels with slight error vector magnitude penalty. One is 4x39 Gb/s polarization-division-multiplexed (PDM) quadrature phase shift keying discrete Fourier transform spread orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DFT-spread-OFDM) superchannel with 12.5 GHz band spacing. The other is 8x29 Gb/s PDM-16-quadrature amplitude modulation Nyquist pulse shaping superchannel with 6.25 GHz band spacing. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that optical switching functionality for individual band between different superchannels with multigranularity is realized.

Abstract:In this paper, we review optical switching experiments of Nyquist superchannel with flexible bit rate. The various switching data capacities of 40,100 and 400-Gb/s are achieved by employing adaptive multi-level or hybrid quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) formats. We aggregate superchannels with enough guard bands for optical superchannel switching with slight error vector magnitude (EVM) penalty. We also demonstrate Terabit optical switching functionality of polarization division multiplexed (PDM) 64-QAM signals with Nyquist pulse shaping.

Abstract:In this paper, we briefly review high spectral efficiency optical superchannel transmission with Nyquist pulse shaping. Afterwards we present the principle of coherent optical Nyquist single carrier (SC) systems with frequency domain channel estimation and time domain equalization (FDTDE) with nonlinear compensation scheme coordinated. Abstract:OFDM superchannel that consists of multiple low speed individually-modulated subbands has been proposed for high speed optical transmission and flexible optical networks with multiple data rate accommodation. In this work, we investigate the feasibility of superchannel multicasting and verify it utilizing multiple-pump FWM in highly nonlinear fiber. 400 Gb/s PDM-OFDM superchannel that consists of ten subbands is successfully delivered from one superchannel to up to seven different superchannels with error free operation. Pump power and signal power are also optimized to achieve the optimal multicasting performance.

Abstract:Threefold 1.2-Tb/s optical polarization-division-multiplexing (PDM) single-carrier frequency-division-multiplexing (SCFDM) and orthogonal-frequency-division-multiplexing (OFDM) superchannel multicasting, utilizing multiple-pump four-wave mixing (FWM) by highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF), is proposed and experimentally demonstrated in this paper. The optical signal noise ratio (OSNR) penalties of the newly generated SCFDM and OFDM superchannels, at the bit error rate (BER) of 10-3, are 2.6 dB and 3.1 dB, respectively. Optimal pump power and signal power are also investigated for the two superchannels. The two superchannels have similar optimal pump power, whereas the SCFDM superchannel has higher optimal signal power due to the lower peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR).

Abstract:A novel scheme for remote supervision of in-line EDFA and fault-location in EDFA cascaded system based on subcarrier modulation is theoretically proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In the scheme, FSK-FDM technique is used in subcarrier modulation, and the EDFA’s supervisory information is transmitted by optical intensity modulation. In this 10 Gbit/s WDM transmission experiments, the system power penalty was 0.16 dB and 086 dB, while the subcarrier modulation degree was 3% and 15% respectively. With the technique of phase-lock, demodulation of supervisory information was realized while the modulation degree was 3%. The conclusion comes that this scheme can be applied in a long-haul WDM transmission system with five EDFAs cascaded.

Abstract:The limited band of optical and electrical devices in an intensity-modulation direct detection (IM/DD) system is considered to be a major bottleneck that hinders the increase in transmission capacity. Spectrally efficient modulation formats and advanced digital signal processing are key technologies to improving the performance of IM/DD for high-speed short-reach optical systems. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel Nyquist eight-level, pulse-amplitude, single-carrier modulation with frequency-domain equalization (PAM8-SCFDE). In addition, 40-GBd Nyquist PAM8-SCFDE signals can be successfully transmitted over 2-km standard single-mode fiber or 20-km large effective area fiber based on 10-G-class DAC and photodiode. Therefore, the achieved aggregate data rate is 120 Gb/s, and the measured bit error rate (BER) is under 7% pre-forward-error-correction (FEC) threshold of 3.8 × 10-3. Compared with conventional PAM8, this scheme can provide double spectral efficiency and 6-dB receiver sensitivity improvement.
