Abstract:The past decade or two has witnessed tremendous progress in theory and practice of quantum control technologies. Bridging different scientific disciplines ranging from fundamental particle physics to nanotechnology, the goal of quantum control has been to develop effective and efficient tools for common analysis and design, but more importantly would pave the way for future technological applications. This article briefly reviews basic quantum control theory from the perspective of modeling, analysis and design, as well as considers future research directions.

Abstract:We propose a scheme to control quantum interference pattern in a system of a superconducting qubit coupled to its own data bus by applying a controllable time-dependent electromagnetic field. It is shown that the quantum interference induced by the initial phase difference is closely related to the quantum correlations between two superconducting qubits which are coupled to their own data bus and the geometric discord can also be increased by applying the controllable electromagnetic field.

Abstract:High-performance control of quantum dynamics is key to the development of quantum technologies. From quantum-state engineering to quantum metrology, theory and practice of quantum control enable robust and cheaper technologies for future industrial applications. Starting from fundamental matter–field interactions, we overview various approaches to modelling quantum control systems, in which control can be implemented by either changing field or material properties. These models are built in time or frequency domain and can be interconnected to form quantum feedback networks. This review can be taken as a useful reference for engineers to understand the quantum physics behind, or for physicists to resolve control problems from a control engineering point of view.

Abstract:This paper presents a survey on quantum control theory and applications from a control systems perspective. Some of the basic concepts and main developments (including open-loop control and closed-loop control) in quantum control theory are reviewed. In the area of open-loop quantum control, the paper surveys the notion of controllability for quantum systems and presents several control design strategies including optimal control, Lyapunov-based methodologies, variable structure control and quantum incoherent control. In the area of closed-loop quantum control, the paper reviews closed-loop learning control and several important issues related to quantum feedback control including quantum filtering, feedback stabilization, LQG control and robust quantum control.

Controllability of Scattering States of Quantum Mechanical Systems

Abstract:This paper provides a framework for the control of quantum mechanical systems with scattering states, i.e., systems with continuous spectra. We present the concept and prove a criterion of the approximate strong smooth controllability. Our results make non-trivial extensions from quantum systems with finite dimensional control Lie algebras to those with infinite dimensions. It also opens up many interesting problems for future studies.

Abstract:The control of individual quantum systems is now a reality in a variety of physical settings. Feedback control is an important class of control methods because of its ability to reduce the effects of noise. In this review we give an introductory overview of the various ways in which feedback may be implemented in quantum systems, the theoretical methods that are currently used to treat it, the experiments in which it has been demonstrated to-date, and its applications. In the last few years there has been rapid experimental progress in the ability to realize quantum measurement and control of mesoscopic systems. We expect that the next few years will see further rapid advances in the precision and sophistication of feedback control protocols realized in the laboratory.

Abstract:The past two decades have witnessed the rapid development of quantum computers. Superconducting circuits are one of the most attractive platforms, and its corresponding precise control system is crucial. Here, a brief review of the room-temperature and cryogenic control systems of superconducting quantum circuits is given. The microwave devices required by the system are introduced, followed by a description of the operation of single-qubit and two-qubit gates, readout techniques, quantum tomography for fidelity characterization, and feedforward and feedback controls. Some future directions are provided for the research and development of control systems for large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computers.

Abstract:Dynamical decoupling as a quantum control strategy aims at suppressing quantum decoherence adopting the popular philosophy that the disorder in the unitary evolution of the open quantum system caused by environmental noises should be neutralized by a sequence of ordered or well-designed external operations acting on the system. This work studies the solution of quantum-state-diffusion equations by mixing two channels of environmental noises, i.e., relaxation (dissipation) and dephasing. It is interesting to find in two-level and three-level atomic systems that a non-Markovian relaxation or dissipation process can be suppressed by a Markovian dephasing noise. The discovery results in an anomalous control strategy by coordinating relaxation and dephasing processes. Our approach opens an avenue of noise control strategy with no artificial manipulation over the open quantum systems.

Abstract:Quantum control strategy is discussed from the perspective of quantum information. First, the constraints imposed on the quantum control by quantum theory are analyzed. Then some quantum control schemes based on quantum information are discussed, such as teleportation-based distant quantum control, quantum feedback control using quantum cloning and state recognition, quantum control based on measurement and Grover iteration. Finally, some applications of quantum control in quantum error correction coding and universality analysis of quantum computation are presented and the potential applications of quantum control in quantum information and quantum computation are also prospected.

Abstract:The idea of feedback to actively control of quantum systems is introduced into quantum feedback control theory, which becomes more and more important part in quantum optics, atomic physics and quantum information theory. In consideration of differences between several feedback strategies, the progress of the research on quantum feedback control theory is reviewed, Markovian quantum feedback, Bayesian quantum feedback, non-Markovian quantum feedback with time delay and coherent quantum feedback are analyzed and expounded, and the four feedback strategies are also compared.

Abstract:Quantum control of an open system is demonstrated employing a thermodynamically consistent master equation. In this framework, the open system dynamics depend on the control protocol due to the dressing of the system by the drive. This interrelation serves as the key element for control. The influence of the external drive is incorporated within the dynamical equation, enabling an indirect control of the dissipation. The control paradigm is displayed by analyzing entropy changing state to state transformations, heating and cooling N-level systems. Following, we study the generation of quantum non-unitary maps via coherent control. These include both reset maps with complete memory loss and single-qubit unitary maps under dissipative conditions.

Abstract:Quantum optimal control is a set of methods for designing time-varying electromagnetic fields to perform operations in quantum technologies. This tutorial paper introduces the basic elements of this theory based on the Pontryagin maximum principle, in a physicist-friendly way. An analogy with classical Lagrangian and Hamiltonian mechanics is proposed to present the main results used in this field. Emphasis is placed on the different numerical algorithms to solve a quantum optimal control problem. Several examples ranging from the control of two-level quantum systems to that of Bose-Einstein Condensates (BEC) in a one-dimensional optical lattice are studied in detail, using both analytical and numerical methods. Codes based on shooting method and gradient-based algorithms are provided. The connection between optimal processes and the quantum speed limit is also discussed in two-level quantum systems. In the case of BEC, the experimental implementation of optimal control protocols is described, both for two-level and many-level cases, with the current constraints and limitations of such platforms. This presentation is illustrated by the corresponding experimental results.

Abstract:The main purpose of this paper is to survey some recent progresses on control theory for stochastic distributed parameter systems, i.e., systems governed by stochastic differential equations in infinite dimensions, typically by stochastic partial differential equations. We will explain the new phenomenon and difficulties in the study of controllability and optimal control problems for one dimensional stochastic parabolic equations and stochastic hyperbolic equations. In particular, we shall see that both the formulation of corresponding stochastic control problems and the tools to solve them may differ considerably from their deterministic/finite-dimensional counterparts. More importantly, one has to develop new tools, say, the stochastic transposition method introduced in our previous works, to solve some problems in this field.

Abstract:Quantum computing is a fascinating interdisciplinary research field that promises to revolutionize computing by efficiently solving previously intractable problems. Recent years have seen tremendous progress on both the experimental realization of quantum computing devices as well as the development and implementation of quantum algorithms. Yet, realizing computational advantages of quantum computers in practice remains a widely open problem due to numerous fundamental challenges. Interestingly, many of these challenges are connected to performance, robustness, scalability, optimization, or feedback, all of which are central concepts in control theory. This paper provides a tutorial introduction to quantum computing from the perspective of control theory. We introduce the mathematical framework of quantum algorithms ranging from basic elements including quantum bits and quantum gates to more advanced concepts such as variational quantum algorithms and quantum errors. The tutorial only requires basic knowledge of linear algebra and, in particular, no prior exposure to quantum physics. Our main goal is to equip readers with the mathematical basics required to understand and possibly solve (control-related) problems in quantum computing. In particular, beyond the tutorial introduction, we provide a list of research challenges in the field of quantum computing and discuss their connections to control.
