Abstract:The electromagnetic form factors of the proton and neutron encode information on the spatial structure of their charge and magnetization distributions. While measurements of the proton are relatively straightforward, the lack of a free neutron target makes measurements of the neutron's electromagnetic structure more challenging and more sensitive to experimental or model-dependent uncertainties. Various experiments have attempted to extract the neutron form factors from scattering from the neutron in deuterium, with different techniques providing different, and sometimes large, systematic uncertainties. We present results from a novel measurement of the neutron magnetic form factor using quasielastic scattering from the mirror nuclei H3 and He3 , where the nuclear effects are larger than for deuterium but expected to largely cancel in the cross-section ratios. We extracted values of the neutron magnetic form factor for low-to-modest momentum transfer, 0.6<q2<2.9 gev2 , where existing measurements give inconsistent results. The Neutron Charge Form-Factor in Helium-3

Abstract:In order to measure the charge form factor of the neutron, $G^n_E(Q^2)$, one needs to use a neutron bound in a nuclear target. We calculate the change in the form factor for a neutron bound in $^3He$, with respect to the free case, using several versions of the quark meson coupling model. It is found that the form factor may be suppressed by as much as 12% at $Q^2 = 0.5{GeV}^2$ with respect to that of the free neutron.
Precise Measurement of the Neutron Magnetic Form Factor from Quasielastic 3he(e, E′)

Abstract:Polarized 3He targets have proven to be a useful tool for studying the electric and magnetic form factors of the neutron, and the spin structure of the neutron. The neutron magnetic form factor at low Q2 was previously determined at MIT-Bates from the quasielastic 3He(e, e′) process. A new experiment is planned at TJNAF to systematically measure the inclusive 3He quasielastic transverse asymmetry, AT′, at Q2 = 0.1−0.5 (GeV/c)2 with high statistical and systematic accuracy. A 2% statistical uncertainty is aimed at all the proposed values of Q2, and 3% systematic uncertainty for AT′ can be achieved for this experiment. The precise data will constrain theoretical calculations of 3He quasielastic asymmetry. Furthermore, the neutron magnetic form factor at Q2 = 0.1−0.5 (Gev/c)2 will be extracted from the measured asymmetries with an overall uncertainty of 2%. Precise measurements of GMn at low Q2 will resolve the discrepancy among the existing data in the same Q2 region.

Abstract:The gravitational form factors (GFFs) are a fundamental and elegant way to describe the structure of nucleons and nuclei. Their Fourier transform allows a description of the spatial distribution of the mass, angular momentum, pressure, and shear force densities for both quarks and gluons in the nucleon. While previous investigations predominantly focused on the proton electromagnetic form factors (EMFFs) leading to the charge and magnetization distributions determination, the current emphasis has shifted towards expanding our understanding of the gravitational form factors of quarks and gluons where little is known. In particular, more recently, the proton {\it gluonic} GFFs have been the target of an intensive investigation at Jefferson Lab. This endeavor, is not without its challenges, particularly in navigating the complexities associated with the near-threshold region. Nevertheless, it provides a bedrock for future nucleon and nuclei gluonic structure studies at the future EIC. In this talk, I will focus on the recent results of $J/\psi$ photoproduction near-threshold on the proton at Jefferson Lab to determine, in particular, the elusive {\it gluonic} gravitational form factors. We discuss the caveats of their extraction in the threshold region and mention the complementary measurements of $\Upsilon$ at the EIC critical to access the trace anomaly and gain insight into the origin of the nucleon mass.

Abstract:A Poincaré-covariant quark+diquark Faddeev equation, augmented by a statistical implementation of the Schlessinger point method for the interpolation and extrapolation of smooth functions, is used to compute nucleon elastic form factors on 0≤Q2≤18mN2 (mN is the nucleon mass) and elucidate their role as probes of emergent hadronic mass in the Standard Model. The calculations expose features of the form factors that can be tested in new generation experiments at existing facilities, e.g., a zero in GEp/GMp, a maximum in GEn/GMn, and a zero in the proton’s d-quark Dirac form factor, F1d. Additionally, examination of the associated light-front-transverse number and anomalous magnetization densities reveals inter alia: a marked excess of valence u quarks in the neighborhood of the proton’s center of transverse momentum, and that the valence d quark is markedly more active magnetically than either of the valence u quarks. The calculations and analysis also reveal other aspects of nucleon structure that could be tested with a high-luminosity accelerator capable of delivering higher beam energies than are currently available.

Abstract:Formalizing syntactic proofs of properties of logics, programming languages, security protocols, and other formal systems is a significant challenge, in large part because of the obligation to handle name-binding correctly. We present an approach called nominal abstract syntax that has attracted considerable interest since its introduction approximately six years ago. After an overview of other approaches, we describe nominal abstract syntax and nominal logic, a logic for reasoning about nominal abstract syntax. We also discuss applications of nominal techniques to programming, automated reasoning, and identify some future directions.

Abstract:Precise measurements of the proton form factor ratio mu*GE/GM from Rosenbluth separation measurements can be combined with Polarization based extractions to provide significant constraints on two-photon exchange contributions to the elastic e-p cross section. We present an overview of JLab experiment E05-017, the high-precision Super-Rosenbluth measurements of the proton form factor taken in Hall C of Jefferson Lab. We then examine what precision could be obtained for Super-Rosenbluth measurements using a low-intensity positron beam at Jefferson Lab.

Abstract:Precision measurements of antineutrino elastic scattering on hydrogen from future neutrino experiments offer a unique opportunity to access the low-energy structure of protons and neutrons. We discuss the determination of the nucleon axial-vector form factor and radius from antineutrino interactions on hydrogen that can be collected at the future Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility and study the sources of theoretical and experimental uncertainties. The projected accuracy would improve existing measurements by 1 order of magnitude and be competitive with contemporary lattice-QCD determinations, potentially helping to resolve the corresponding tension with measurements from (anti)neutrino elastic scattering on deuterium. We find that the current knowledge of the nucleon vector form factors could be one of the dominant sources of uncertainty. Longitudinal form factors of $A\,\leq\,10$ nuclei in a chiral effective field theory approach

Abstract:In this work, we present the elastic electron scattering longitudinal form factors of $A\le 10$ nuclei computed in a variational Monte Carlo approach. We employ the Norfolk family of local chiral interactions and a consistent electromagnetic charge operator. Our calculations are compared both to data and past theoretical evaluations. This work represents, to our knowledge, the first exact many-body calculation of longitudinal form factors in the $7\,\leq\,A\,\leq\,10$ mass range. Finally, we identify $^9$Be and $^{10}$B as candidate targets for renewed experimental interest, as they exhibit the potential to provide more stringent constraints on the theoretical models.

New Physics Off the $Z$-Pole: $e^+ e^- \rightarrow f \bar f$ at Future Lepton Colliders

Abstract:We explore the prospects for probing new physics (NP) beyond the Standard Model (SM) at future lepton colliders through precision measurements of $e^+e^-\to f{\bar f}$ observables off the $Z$ resonance. We consider interference between SM contributions and those arising from dimension-6, four-fermion effective operators that encode the effects of NP, yielding a linear dependence on the latter. This linear dependence in general increases with magnitude of the collision energy offset from the $Z$ pole. We consider a variety of asymmetries in order to enhance the NP-sensitivity while reducing experimental systematic and theoretical, SM uncertainties: an inclusive above and below $Z$-resonance total cross section asymmetry ($A_\sigma$) as well as the conventional forward-backward ($A_{\rm FB}$) and polarization ($A_{\rm pol}$) asymmetries. Based on projected statistical uncertainties at the Circular Electron-Positron Collider (CEPC), we find that t measurement of $A_\sigma$ could extend the sensitivity to the NP mass scale by as much as a factor of $\sim 7$ compared to the present reach obtained with the CERN Large Electron Positron Collider. Inclusion of projected systematic theoretical SM uncertainties substantially reduce this sensitivity gain. For $A_{\rm FB}$, inclusion of experimental systematic uncertainties has a marginal impact on the gain in NP reach, whereas SM theoretical uncertainties remain a significant barrier to realizing the full NP sensitivity. Analogous conclusions apply to the CERN Future Circular Collider (FCC-ee) and International Linear Collider (ILC).

Abstract:Jefferson Lab (JLab) 12 GeV energy upgrade provides a golden opportunity to perform precision studies of the transverse spin and transverse-momentum-dependent structure in the valence quark region for both the proton and the neutron. In this paper, we focus our discussion on a recently approved experiment on the neutron as an example of the precision studies planned at JLab. The new experiment will perform precision measurements of target Single-Spin Asymmetries (SSA) from semi-inclusive electro-production of charged pions from a 40 cm long transversely polarized 3He target in deep-inelastic-scattering kinematics using 11 and 8.8 GeV electron beams. This new coincidence experiment in Hall A will employ a newly proposed solenoid spectrometer (SoLID). The large acceptance spectrometer and the high polarized luminosity will provide precise 4D (x , z , PT and Q2) data on the Collins, Sivers, and pretzelosity asymmetries for the neutron through the azimuthal angular dependence. The full 2$ \pi$ azimuthal angular coverage in the lab is essential in controlling the systematic uncertainties. The results from this experiment, when combined with the proton Collins asymmetry measurement and the Collins fragmentation function determined from the e+e- collision data, will allow for a quark flavor separation in order to achieve a determination of the tensor charge of the d quark to a 10% accuracy. The extracted Sivers and pretzelosity asymmetries will provide important information to understand the correlations between the quark orbital angular momentum and the nucleon spin and between the quark spin and nucleon spin.

Abstract:We derive the electric and magnetic form factors of the neutron in the framework of a relativistic constituent quark model. Our parameter free prediction agrees well with a recent, accurate measurement. The relativistic features of the model and the specific form of the wave function are essential for the result. Comparisons are made to other models based on VMD, PQCD and QCD sum rules.

Abstract:In this paper, we present an efficient implementation method of physical layer of Y-00 which can support a secure communication and a quantum key distribution (more generally key expansion) by IMDD(intensity modulation/direct detection) or FSK(frequency shift keying)optical fiber communication network. Although the general proof of the security is not yet given, a brief sketch of security analysis is shown, which involve an entanglement attack.

Abstract:Coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CE$\nu$NS), a process recently measured for the first time at ORNL's Spallation Neutron Source, is directly sensitive to the weak form factor of the nucleus. The European Spallation Source (ESS), presently under construction, will generate the most intense pulsed neutrino flux suitable for the detection of CE$\nu$NS. In this paper we quantify its potential to determine the root mean square radius of the point-neutron distribution, for a variety of target nuclei and a suite of detectors. To put our results in context we also derive, for the first time, a constraint on this parameter from the analysis of the energy and timing data of the CsI detector at the COHERENT experiment.

Abstract:Nucleon structure functions, as measured in lepton-nucleon scattering, have historically provided a critical observable in the study of partonic dynamics within the nucleon. However, at very large parton momenta it is both experimentally and theoretically challenging to extract parton distributions due to the probable onset of non-perturbative contributions and the unavailability of high precision data at critical kinematics. Extraction of the neutron structure and the d-quark distribution have been further challenging due to the necessity of applying nuclear corrections when utilizing scattering data from a deuteron target to extract free neutron structure. However, a program of experiments has been carried out recently at the energy-upgraded Jefferson Lab electron accelerator aimed at significantly reducing the nuclear correction uncertainties on the d-quark distribution function at large partonic momentum. This allows leveraging the vast body of deuterium data covering a large kinematic range to be utilized for d-quark parton distribution function extraction. We present new data from experiment E12-10-002 carried out in Jefferson Lab Hall C on the deuteron to proton cross-section ratio at large BJorken-x. These results significantly improve the precision of existing data, and provide a first look at the expected impact on quark distributions extracted from global parton distribution function fits.

Towards Precision Muonic X-Ray Measurements of Charge Radii of Light Nuclei

Abstract:We propose an experiment to measure the nuclear charge radii of light elements with up to 20~times higher accuracy. These are essential both for understanding nuclear physics at low energies, and for experimental and theoretical applications in simple atomic systems. Such comparisons advance the understanding of bound-state quantum electrodynamics and are useful for searching for new physics beyond the Standard Model. The energy levels of muonic atoms are highly susceptible to nuclear structure, especially to the mean square charge radius. The radii of the lightest nuclei (with the atomic number, $Z=1,2$) have been determined with high accuracy using laser spectroscopy in muonic atoms, while those of medium mass and above were determined using X-ray spectroscopy with semiconductor detectors. In this communication, we present a new experiment, aiming to obtain precision measurements of the radii of light nuclei $3 \leq Z \leq 10$ using single-photon energy measurements with cryogenic microcalorimeters; a quantum-sensing technology capable of high efficiency with outstanding resolution for low-energy X-rays.

Abstract:We present a projection study for the first moments of the inclusive spin structure function for the proton and neutron from simulated doubly-polarized e+p and e+3He collision data expected from the Electron-Ion collider. For detection and extraction of the neutron spin asymmetries from e+3He collisions, we used the double-tagging method which significantly reduces the uncertainty over the traditional inclusive method. Using the Bjorken sum rule, the projected results allow us to determine that the QCD coupling at the Z-pole alpha_s can be measured with a relative precision of 1.3%. This underscores the significance of the EIC for achieving precision determinations of alpha_s.

Abstract:We present the measurements of individual bound electron $g$ factors of $^{20}\text{Ne}^{9+}$ and $^{22}\text{Ne}^{9+}$ on the relative level of $0.1\,\text{parts}$ per billion. The comparison with theory represents the most stringent test of bound-state QED in strong electric fields. A dedicated mass measurement results in $m\left(^{20}\text{Ne}\right)=19.992\,440\,168\,77\,(9)\,\text{u}$, which improves the current literature value by a factor of nineteen, disagrees by $4$ standard deviations and represents the most precisely measured mass value in atomic mass units. Together, these measurements yield an electron mass on the relative level of $0.1\,\text{ppb}$ with $m_{\text{e}}=5.485\,799\,090\,99\,(59) \times 10^{-4}\,\text{u}$ as well as a factor of eight improved $m\left(^{22}\text{Ne}\right)=21.991\,385\,098\,2\,(26)\,\text{u}$.
