Abstract:The past few years have witnessed the dramatic popularity of large-scale social networks where malicious nodes detection is one of the fundamental problems. Most existing works focus on actively detecting malicious nodes by verifying signal correlation or behavior consistency. It may not work well in large-scale social networks since the number of users is extremely large and the difference between normal users and malicious users is inconspicuous. In this paper, we propose a novel approach that leverages the power of users to perform the detection task. We design incentive mechanisms to encourage the participation of users under two scenarios: 1) full information and 2) partial information. In full information scenario, we design a specific incentive scheme for users according to their preferences, which can provide the desirable detection result and minimize overall cost. In partial information scenario, assuming that we only have statistical information about users, we first transform the incentive mechanism design to an optimization problem, and then design the optimal incentive scheme under different system parameters by solving the optimization problem. We perform extensive simulations to validate the analysis and demonstrate the impact of system factors on the overall cost.
Do explanations increase the effectiveness of AI-crowd generated fake news warnings?

Abstract:Social media platforms are increasingly deploying complex interventions to help users detect false news. Labeling false news using techniques that combine crowd-sourcing with artificial intelligence (AI) offers a promising way to inform users about potentially low-quality information without censoring content, but also can be hard for users to understand. In this study, we examine how users respond in their sharing intentions to information they are provided about a hypothetical human-AI hybrid system. We ask i) if these warnings increase discernment in social media sharing intentions and ii) if explaining how the labeling system works can boost the effectiveness of the warnings. To do so, we conduct a study ($N=1473$ Americans) in which participants indicated their likelihood of sharing content. Participants were randomly assigned to a control, a treatment where false content was labeled, or a treatment where the warning labels came with an explanation of how they were generated. We find clear evidence that both treatments increase sharing discernment, and directional evidence that explanations increase the warnings' effectiveness. Interestingly, we do not find that the explanations increase self-reported trust in the warning labels, although we do find some evidence that participants found the warnings with the explanations to be more informative. Together, these results have important implications for designing and deploying transparent misinformation warning labels, and AI-mediated systems more broadly.

Abstract:Disinformation is proliferating on the internet, and platforms are responding by attaching warnings to content. There is little evidence, however, that these warnings help users identify or avoid disinformation. In this work, we adapt methods and results from the information security warning literature in order to design and evaluate effective disinformation warnings. In an initial laboratory study, we used a simulated search task to examine contextual and interstitial disinformation warning designs. We found that users routinely ignore contextual warnings, but users notice interstitial warnings -- and respond by seeking information from alternative sources. We then conducted a follow-on crowdworker study with eight interstitial warning designs. We confirmed a significant impact on user information-seeking behavior, and we found that a warning's design could effectively inform users or convey a risk of harm. We also found, however, that neither user comprehension nor fear of harm moderated behavioral effects. Our work provides evidence that disinformation warnings can -- when designed well -- help users identify and avoid disinformation. We show a path forward for designing effective warnings, and we contribute repeatable methods for evaluating behavioral effects. We also surface a possible dilemma: disinformation warnings might be able to inform users and guide behavior, but the behavioral effects might result from user experience friction, not informed decision making.

Abstract:Web pages polluted by unhealthy contents (e.g. pornography or violence) have offended many users and become a social headache. This paper presents a collaborative rating system and a light-weight algorithm to detect polluted pages and thus improve user experience of web browsing. It mainly tackles two challenges. First, the system should cater to web users' different tastes and judging standards on which polluted pages they like or dislike. Second, the system should be resilient to dishonest ratings and collusions. The model and the algorithm are evaluated by simulations which show that they can work well.
A Mild Approach to Prebunking Health Misinformation in Social Media: Digital Nudging

Abstract:ABSTRACT The governance of health misinformation has been a hot topic in both social practice and academic research. Due to its proactive and timely nature, prebunking represents an emerging and efficacious intervention. However, previous research on prebunking primarily focuses on presenting arguments or techniques to the public in a direct and coercive manner, which remains limited in its scope and efficacy. This study aims to implement prebunking in social media by utilizing a milder approach, namely digital nudging. We conduct a web‐based pre‐experiment to test the effectiveness of warning, social and disclosure nudge, and obtain data from 104 participants. The preliminary results show that the warning and social nudge can mitigate the credibility of misinformation and decrease individual's sharing likelihood. Furthermore, eHealth literacy acts as the moderator in the impact of social nudge. This study broadens the comprehensions of the misinformation governance and digital nudging, and furnishes practical implications for the implementation of prebunking in social media.
Effects of Automated Messages on Internet Users Attempting to Access "Barely Legal" Pornography

Abstract:With the increasing number of individuals accessing online child sexual exploitation material (CSEM), there is an urgent need for primary prevention strategies to supplement the traditional focus on arrest and prosecution. We examined whether online warning messages would dissuade individuals from visiting a honeypot website purporting to contain barely legal pornography. Participants (n = 419) seeking the site were randomly assigned to one of five conditions; they went straight to the landing page (control; n = 100) or encountered a warning message advising of the potential harm to viewers (n = 74), potential harm to victims (n = 65), ability of police to track IP addresses (n = 81), or possible illegality of such pornography (n = 99). We measured the attempted click-through to the site. Attrition rates for the warning message conditions were 38% to 52%, compared with 27% for the control group. The most effective messages were those that warned that IP addresses can be traced (odds ratio [OR] = 2.64) and that the pornography may be illegal (OR = 2.99). We argue that warning messages offer a valuable and cost-effective strategy that can be scaled up to help reduce the accessing of CSEM online.

Abstract:Online social networks are now recognized as an important platform for the spread of information.While providing convenient exchange for users,it also makes OSNs fertile grounds for the wide spread of misinformation which can lead to undesirable consequences.Most mainstream media outlets use keyword matching as a search method to find misinfor-mation and forbid the presentation in context.However,this method also blocks positive messages related to misinformation. In this paper,we propose an adaptive opinion guiding model to limit the spread of misinformation.Based on user’s opinion and sentiment,the model recommends messages or other users that have relative positive feeling to current user.It also intro-duces the feedback mechanism to achieve a long-term and accurate guiding by adjusting the pushing content dynamically.We also design and finish the guiding system.Experiments show that the model can guide the opinion of the network group ef-fectively.
Nudging Away Health Misinformation on Social Media: The Roles of Social Influences and Power Distance.

Abstract:Nudges are considered as potential and promising approaches to combat misinformation on social media, yet they often overlooked the influence of other users. This study aims to explore the impact of social influence on people’s attitudes toward health misinformation by utilizing nudges on social media. We conducted a 2 * 3 between-subject web-based experiment to test the effectiveness of informational and normative social influences and obtained data from 247 participants. The preliminary results show that both social influences reduce sharing likelihood of misinformation, by decreasing perceived credibility. Informational social influence increases individuals’ perceived threat while normative social influence decreases it. Power distance significantly moderates the relationship between normative social influence and perceived threat. This study contributes to nudging away misinformation by revealing the roles of two distinctive social influences, and also furnishes practical implications for the misinformation governance on social media.
Exploring Lightweight Interventions at Posting Time to Reduce the Sharing of Misinformation on Social Media

Abstract:When users on social media share content without considering its veracity, they may unwittingly be spreading misinformation. In this work, we investigate the design of lightweight interventions that nudge users to assess the accuracy of information as they share it. Such assessment may deter users from posting misinformation in the first place, and their assessments may also provide useful guidance to friends aiming to assess those posts themselves. In support of lightweight assessment, we first develop a taxonomy of the reasons why people believe a news claim is or is not true; this taxonomy yields a checklist that can be used at posting time. We conduct evaluations to demonstrate that the checklist is an accurate and comprehensive encapsulation of people's free-response rationales. In a second experiment, we study the effects of three behavioral nudges -- 1) checkboxes indicating whether headings are accurate, 2) tagging reasons (from our taxonomy) that a post is accurate via a checklist and 3) providing free-text rationales for why a headline is or is not accurate -- on people's intention of sharing the headline on social media. From an experiment with 1668 participants, we find that both providing accuracy assessment and rationale reduce the sharing of false content. They also reduce the sharing of true content, but to a lesser degree that yields an overall decrease in the fraction of shared content that is false. Our findings have implications for designing social media and news sharing platforms that draw from richer signals of content credibility contributed by users. In addition, our validated taxonomy can be used by platforms and researchers as a way to gather rationales in an easier fashion than free-response.

Abstract:Substance use and abuse is a significant public health problem in the United States. Group-based intervention programs offer a promising means of preventing and reducing substance abuse. While effective, unfortunately, inappropriate intervention groups can result in an increase in deviant behaviors among participants, a process known as deviancy training. This paper investigates the problem of optimizing the social influence related to the deviant behavior via careful construction of the intervention groups. We propose a Mixed Integer Optimization formulation that decides on the intervention groups, captures the impact of the groups on the structure of the social network, and models the impact of these changes on behavior propagation. In addition, we propose a scalable hybrid meta-heuristic algorithm that combines Mixed Integer Programming and Large Neighborhood Search to find near-optimal network partitions. Our algorithm is packaged in the form of GUIDE, an AI-based decision aid that recommends intervention groups. Being the first quantitative decision aid of this kind, GUIDE is able to assist practitioners, in particular social workers, in three key areas: (a) GUIDE proposes near-optimal solutions that are shown, via extensive simulations, to significantly improve over the traditional qualitative practices for forming intervention groups; (b) GUIDE is able to identify circumstances when an intervention will lead to deviancy training, thus saving time, money, and effort; (c) GUIDE can evaluate current strategies of group formation and discard strategies that will lead to deviancy training. In developing GUIDE, we are primarily interested in substance use interventions among homeless youth as a high risk and vulnerable population. GUIDE is developed in collaboration with Urban Peak, a homeless-youth serving organization in Denver, CO, and is under preparation for deployment.

Abstract:In a typical Event-Based Surveillance setting, a stream of web documents is continuously monitored for disease reporting. A structured representation of the disease reporting events is extracted from the raw text, and the events are then aggregated to produce signals, which are intended to represent early warnings against potential public health threats. To public health officials, these warnings represent an overwhelming list of "one-size-fits-all" information for risk assessment. To reduce this overload, two techniques are proposed. First, filtering signals according to the user's preferences (e.g., location, disease, symptoms, etc.) helps reduce the undesired noise. Second, re-ranking the filtered signals, according to an individual's feedback and annotation, allows a user-specific, prioritized ranking of the most relevant warnings. We introduce an approach that takes into account this two-step process of: 1) filtering and 2) re-ranking the results of reporting signals. For this, Collaborative Filtering and Personalization are common techniques used to support users in dealing with the large amount of information that they face.
Mitigating the influence of message features on health misinformation sharing intention in social media: Experimental evidence for accuracy-nudge intervention

Abstract:Rationale: The escalating dissemination of health misinformation on social media platforms poses a significant threat to users' well-being. It is imperative to identify the types of health misinformation that are more susceptible to widespread dissemination and to explore strategies to curb its spread. Method: This study designed a 2 (emotional appeal type: positive vs. negative) × 2 (fabricated source type: pseudo-common vs. pseudo-authoritative) × 2 (accuracy-nudge label: No vs. Yes) online between-subjects experiment controlling for factors such as e-health literacy, prior sharing experience, and personal involvement. A snowball sampling approach was used to recruit 1952 participants through social media, resulting in a final sample of 1393 valid responses. Results: Compared to positive emotional appeal and pseudo-common sources, negative emotional appeal and pseudo-authoritative sources resulted in higher levels of sharing intention. Under the condition of negative emotional appeal, the promotion effect of pseudo-authoritative sources on sharing intention was intensified. The accuracy-nudge intervention could significantly mitigate this tendency. The underlying mechanisms revealed more details: both negative emotional appeals and pseudo-authoritative sources increased the perceived credibility of health misinformation, thereby increasing users' sharing intention. However, in contrast to pseudo-authoritative sources, excessive negative emotional appeal induced vigilant verification behavior among users, which reduced sharing to some extent. Adding an accuracy-nudge label to health misinformation reduced users' misguided trust in health misinformation features and stimulated information verification, ultimately reducing health misinformation sharing intention. Conclusions: Negative emotional appeal and pseudo-authoritative sources can enhance the perceived credibility of health misinformation, thereby strengthening the sharing intention of social media users. Therefore, health misinformation with negative emotional appeal and pseudo-authoritative sources is more likely to be widely shared. The accuracy nudge intervention can trigger users' information verification behavior, suppress the persuasive effects of the misinformation features mentioned above, and help prevent the spread of health misinformation on social media.
The effect of therapeutic and deterrent messages on Internet users attempting to access 'barely legal' pornography

Abstract:Online child sexual abuse material (CSAM) is a growing problem. Prevention charities, such as Stop It Now! UK, use online messaging to dissuade users from viewing CSAM and to encourage them to consider anonymous therapeutic interventions. This experiment used a honeypot website that purported to contain barely legal pornography, which we treated as a proxy for CSAM. We examined whether warnings would dissuade males (18-30 years) from visiting the website. Participants (n = 474) who attempted to access the site were randomly allocated to one of four conditions. The control group went straight to the landing page (control; n = 100). The experimental groups encountered different warning messages: deterrence-themed with an image (D3; n = 117); therapeutic-themed (T1; n = 120); and therapeutic-themed with an image (T3; n = 137). We measured the click through to the site. Three quarters of the control group attempted to enter the pornography site, compared with 35 % to 47 % of the experimental groups. All messages were effective: D3 (odds ratio [OR] = 5.02), T1 (OR = 4.06) and T2 (OR = 3.05). Images did not enhance warning effectiveness. We argue that therapeutic and deterrent warnings are useful for CSAM-prevention.
Meaningful Context, a Red Flag, or Both? Users' Preferences for Enhanced Misinformation Warnings on Twitter

Abstract:Warning users about misinformation on social media is not a simple usability task. Soft moderation has to balance between debunking falsehoods and avoiding moderation bias while preserving the social media consumption flow. Platforms thus employ minimally distinguishable warning tags with generic text under a suspected misinformation content. This approach resulted in an unfavorable outcome where the warnings "backfired" and users believed the misinformation more, not less. In response, we developed enhancements to the misinformation warnings where users are advised on the context of the information hazard and exposed to standard warning iconography. We ran an A/B evaluation with the Twitter's original warning tags in a 337 participant usability study. The majority of the participants preferred the enhancements as a nudge toward recognizing and avoiding misinformation. The enhanced warning tags were most favored by the politically left-leaning and to a lesser degree moderate participants, but they also appealed to roughly a third of the right-leaning participants. The education level was the only demographic factor shaping participants' preferences. We use our findings to propose user-tailored improvements in the soft moderation of misinformation on social media.

NudgeCred: Supporting News Credibility Assessment on Social Media Through Nudges

Abstract:Struggling to curb misinformation, social media platforms are experimenting with design interventions to enhance consumption of credible news on their platforms. Some of these interventions, such as the use of warning messages, are examples of nudges -- a choice-preserving technique to steer behavior. Despite their application, we do not know whether nudges could steer people into making conscious news credibility judgments online and if they do, under what constraints. To answer, we combine nudge techniques with heuristic based information processing to design NudgeCred -- a browser extension for Twitter. NudgeCred directs users' attention to two design cues: authority of a source and other users' collective opinion on a report by activating three design nudges -- Reliable, Questionable, and Unreliable, each denoting particular levels of credibility for news tweets. In a controlled experiment, we found that NudgeCred significantly helped users (n=430) distinguish news tweets' credibility, unrestricted by three behavioral confounds -- political ideology, political cynicism, and media skepticism. A five-day field deployment with twelve participants revealed that NudgeCred improved their recognition of news items and attention towards all of our nudges, particularly towards Questionable. Among other considerations, participants proposed that designers should incorporate heuristics that users' would trust. Our work informs nudge-based system design approaches for online media.

Promoting civil discourse on social media using nudges: A tournament of seven interventions

Abstract:In this article, we test and compare several message-based nudges designed to promote civil discourse and reduce the circulation of harmful content such as hate speech. We conducted a large pre-registered experiment (N = 4,081) to measure the effectiveness of seven nudges: making descriptive norms, injunctive norms, or personal norms salient, cooling down negative emotions, stimulating deliberation or empathy, and highlighting reputation. We used an online platform that reproduces a social media newsfeed and presented the nudge as a message when entering the platform. Our findings indicate that none of the nudges significantly impacts participants' engagement with harmful content. At the same time, nudges making descriptive norms salient selectively increase participants' overall engagement with relatively harmless content. Additionally, making injunctive norms salient increased the likelihood of liking harmless posts. Exploratory text analysis also reveals that highlighting reputation leads to more substantial and coherent comments on harmful posts. These results suggest that nudges that activate norm considerations represent a promising approach to promoting civil discourse and making social media a safer and more inclusive space for all.

Abstract:The rapid development of the Internet has transformed the way people access information. Users can now easily search for keywords to obtain diverse data, and recommender systems help manage data overload and find interesting items. Traditional recommender systems focus on individual user preferences, which reflect underlying interests, but in group settings, social factors are crucial for decision-making. Previous research rarely considered these factors. In human psychology, curiosity in social contexts motivates seeking interestingness, emphasizing the unknown and unexpected impact on perception and interest. This study proposes a group recommender system based on social curiosity, inspired by Berlyne's curiosity theory. The system incorporates social network information and quantifies curiosity-stimulating factors (surprise, uncertainty, and conflict) for modeling. Evaluations using real-world datasets investigate whether curiosity enhances group user satisfaction. Results show that incorporating social curiosity significantly improves the precision, coverage, and diversity of group recommendations compared to collaborative filtering. The findings indicate that curiosity-driven recommendations align better with group interests, offering more diverse options and higher satisfaction among members.

Abstract:The under-reporting of public safety incidents is a long-standing issue. In this paper, we propose a computational cognitive modeling approach to understand and design a mobile crowdsourcing system for improving campus safety reporting. In particular, we adopt drift-diffusion models (DDMs) from cognitive psychology to investigate the effect of various factors on users’ reporting tendency for public safety. Our lab experiment and online study show consistent results on how location context impacts people's reporting decisions. This finding informs the design of a novel location-based nudge mechanism, which is tested in another lab experiment with 84 participants and proved to be effective in changing users’ reporting decisions. Our follow-up interview study further suggests that the influence of people's mobility patterns (e.g., expected walking distance) could explain why the nudge design is effective. Our work not only informs the design of mobile crowdsourcing for public safety reporting but also demonstrates the value of applying a computational cognitive modeling approach to address HCI research questions more broadly.

Abstract:Given the nascent understanding of user perceptions toward digital nudges in e-commerce, our study examines key factors: perceived usefulness, ease of use, trust, and privacy risks. Via an online experiment of 273 participants, we examined the influence of digital nudging interventions – social norms, defaults, and scarcity warnings – against a control group. Employing descriptive and inferential statistics, notable trust variations were found between default and scarcity warning groups versus controls. To assess these findings, we interviewed 11 information systems and psychology experts. This research enriches our understanding of digital nudges in e-commerce and provides design insights. Theoretical implications span from providing propositions in order to enhance user involvement, conducting narrative accompanying research, analyzing diverse time points of nudging. Practical implications focus on emphasizing to users their choice autonomy and the highlighting that defaults and scarcity warnings are designed to mitigate inherent heuristics and biases for combining nudging with boosting elements.

Abstract:Group recommendation plays a significant role in today's social media systems, where users form social groups to receive multimedia content together and interact with each other, instead of consuming the online content individually. Limitations of traditional group recommendation approaches are as follows. First, they usually infer group members’ preferences by their historical behaviors, failing to capture inactive users’ preferences from the sparse historical data. Second, relationships between group members are not studied by these approaches, which fail to capture the inherent personality of members in a group. To address these issues, we propose a social-aware group recommendation framework that jointly utilizes both social relationships and social behaviors to not only infer a group's preference, but also model the tolerance and altruism characteristics of group members. Based on the observation that the following relationship in the online social network reflects common interests of users, we propose a group preference model based on external experts of group members. Furthermore, we model users’ tolerance (willingness to receive content not preferred) and altruism (willingness to receive content preferred by friends). Finally, based on the group preference model, we design recommendation algorithms for users under different social contexts. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach, which significantly improves the recommendation accuracy against traditional approaches, especially in the cases of inactive group members.
