Abstract:A new colour gamut based on a large number of reflectance data sets was established. The data comprise 17 data sets including 85900 measurement data. The gamut developed was compared with those developed by Pointer and ISO TC130. Some large discrepancies were found between the ISO and the present gamut.

Abstract:A large set of data, comprising the spectral reflectances of real surface colours, has been accumulated. The data comprise 16 groups with different materials and include 85,879 measured spectra. From these data, CIELAB colorimetric coordinates were calculated under CIE illuminant D50 and the CIE 1931 standard colorimetric (2 degrees) observer. Several published colour gamuts including those developed by Pointer and ISO reference colour gamut [ISO Graphic Technology Standard 12640-3: 2007] were compared using the present data set. It was found that the Pointer gamut is smaller than the new real data in most of the colour regions. The results also showed that the ISO reference colour gamut is larger than the new real accumulated data in most regions. The present finding indicates that there is a need to derive a new colour gamut based on the newly accumulated data for common applications. (C) 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:A new gamut [1] to represent object colours was developed by the authors. Its boundary is defined by CIELAB L*, C-ab* and h(ab) under D50/2 degrees conditions. This paper describes an extension of this colour gamut to be reflectance based. Examples are given to illustrate the advantages to use spectral based rather than colorimetric based colour gamut.

Abstract:This paper describes an investigation into the performance of different gamut compression algorithms (GCAs) in different uniform colour spaces (UCSs) between small and large colour gamuts. Gamut mapping is a key component in a colour management system and has drawn much attention in the last two decades. Two new GCAs, i.e. vividness-preserved (VP) and depth-preserved (DP), based on the concepts of 'vividness' and 'depth' are proposed and compared with the other commonly used GCAs with the exception of spatial GCAs since the goal of this study was to develop an algorithm that could be implemented in real time for mobile phone applications. In addition, UCSs including CIELAB, CAM02-UCS, and a newly developed UCS, Jzazbz, were tested to verify how they affect the performance of the GCAs. A psychophysical experiment was conducted and the results showed that one of the newly proposed GCAs, VP, gave the best performance among different GCAs and the Jzazbz is a promising UCS for gamut mapping.
Perceived Color Gamut in Images: From Boundary to Difference

Abstract:A larger display color gamut volume (CGV) is expected to produce higher perceived brightness and colorfulness of the images displayed. However, display control algorithms such as gamut mapping and color conversion need to be carefully controlled to fully take advantage of the higher luminance and more saturated display primaries. Using RGBW displays (RGB plus a white channel) as a special case in contrast to RGB displays, it is demonstrated that a larger RGB display gamut enclosed by the boundary did not guarantee a larger color gamut perceived in images. Five gamuts with different white channel contributions were simulated, and seven different image contents were curated and rendered on each display. Using a paired comparison experiment with 33 observers, the perceived scales of color gamut as perceived brightness and colorfulness were derived. The results show more correlation with the image-wise than display-wise CGV and can be explained with image color differences. Our findings highlight the importance of considering image contents when optimizing display gamut volume, which can be guided by such image-wise analysis.

Abstract:A wide color gamut (WCG) display has great color rendering capability and offers the opportunity to achieve a pleasing and realistic appearance in terms of image quality. To take full advantage of the large display gamut, a new gamut extension algorithm (GEA) is proposed based on a new color appearance scale, vividness. The performance of the new GEA was investigated via a psychophysical experiment together with five commonly used GEAs. In addition, two different uniform color spaces (UCSs) were also studied including the CAM02-UCS color space and a space, Jzazbz, designed for high dynamic range (HDR) and WCG applications. The results showed that the newly proposed GEA, i.e. the vividness-extension (VE) algorithm, outperformed all the other GEAs and the Jzazbz space was a promising UCS for evaluating gamut extension.

Abstract:A new method was developed to evaluate the perceived gamut of a display. A multispectral image of a white gypsum sphere was projected onto various highly chromatic lights, producing a series of images with distinct hue perceptions at the gamut boundary of displays. These images were subsequently used in a psychophysical experiment to examine the perceived color gamut. Afterwards, the visual results were further compared with the prediction results from various uniform color spaces (UCSs) and color appearance models (CAMs). The present results demonstrate that CAM16-UCS provides the most accurate prediction across the entire color gamut, whereas the cyan-to-blue region is more poorly predicted than the other hue regions for all CAMs and UCSs investigated.

Abstract:A novel metric named Gamut Volume Index (GVI) is proposed for evaluating the colour preference of lighting. This metric is based on the absolute gamut volume of optimized colour samples. The optimal colour set of the proposed metric was obtained by optimizing the weighted average correlation between the metric predictions and the subjective ratings for 8 psychophysical studies. The performance of 20 typical colour metrics was also investigated, which included colour difference based metrics, gamut based metrics, memory based metrics as well as combined metrics. It was found that the proposed GVI outperformed the existing counterparts, especially for the conditions where correlated colour temperatures differed.

Abstract:An experiment was conducted to examine colour rendition specification criteria. Twenty-five participants each evaluated 90 lighting scenes in a room filled with objects. The lighting scenes included nine chromaticity groups, each with 10 systematically-varied colour rendition conditions designed to meet or not meet previously proposed colour preference specification criteria using the ANSI/IES TM-30-18 measures: Fidelity Index ( Rf), Gamut Index ( Rg) and red Local Chroma Shift ( Rcs,h1). The colour rendition conditions did not meet the criterion for none, one, two or all three of these measures. Participants, who chromatically adapted to each chromaticity group, rated the objects' colour appearance on eight-point scales for saturated–dull, normal–shifted and like-dislike (preference), as well as a binary for acceptable or unacceptable. The findings corroborate past work, but also indicate that colour preference criteria could be adjusted slightly to improve performance, with Tier A having Rf ≥ 78, Rg ≥ 95 and −1% ≤ Rcs,h1 ≤ 15%, Tier B having Rf ≥ 74, Rg ≥ 92 and −7% ≤ Rcs,h1 ≤ 19%, and Tier C having Rf ≥ 70, Rg ≥ 89 and −12% ≤ Rcs,h1 ≤ 23%. A companion regression analysis shows models based on Rf, Rg and Rcs,h1 were superior in predicting colour preference compared to those using other measures of colour rendition.
Human Perceptions of Colour Rendition Vary with Average Fidelity, Average Gamut, and Gamut Shape

Abstract:An experiment was conducted to evaluate how subjective impressions of a light source’s colour quality depend upon the details of the shifts it causes in the colour appearance of illuminated objects. Twenty-eight participants each evaluated 26 lighting conditions in a 3.1 m by 3.7 m room filled with objects selected to cover a range of hue, saturation, and lightness. IES TM-30-15 Fidelity Index ( Rf) values ranged from 64 to 93, IES TM-30 Gamut Index ( Rg) values ranging from 79 to 117, and IES TM-30 red chroma shift ( Rcs,h1) values ranging from −19% to 26%. All lighting conditions had the same nominal illuminance and chromaticity. Participants were asked to rate each condition on eight point scales for saturated–dull, normal–shifted, and like–dislike, as well as classifying the condition as one of saturated, dull, normal, or shifted. The findings suggest that gamut shape is more important than average gamut area for modeling human preference, with red playing a more important role than other hues. Average fidelity alone is a weak predictor of human perception, especially CIE Ra. Nine of the top 12 rated products had a CIE Ra value of 73 or less, which indicates that the criteria of CIE Ra ≥ 80 may be excluding many preferred light sources.

Abstract:An experimental dataset,WCG, was assembled. The set includes 416 pairs of samples that surround 28 colour centres and covers a wide colour gamut. The data were used to test the performance of seven colour-difference models,CIELAB,CIEDE2000,CAM16-UCS,DIN99d, OSAGP, andICTCP,Jzazbz. Colour discrimination ellipses were also fitted to compare the uniformity of the colour spaces. Different versions of the models were derived to improve the fit to the data, including parametric factors,kL, kC, and a power factor. It was found that thekLoptimisedCAM16-UCS, DIN99d, OSAGPmodels significantly outperformed the other colour models. In addition, the magnitude of the colour difference had an impact on visual assessment.

Abstract:We have developed a two-measure system for evaluating light sources' color rendition that builds upon conceptual progress of numerous researchers over the last two decades. The system quantifies the color fidelity and color gamut (change in object chroma) of a light source in comparison to a reference illuminant. The calculations are based on a newly developed set of reflectance data from real samples uniformly distributed in color space (thereby fairly representing all colors) and in wavelength space (thereby precluding artificial optimization of the color rendition scores by spectral engineering). The color fidelity score R(f) is an improved version of the CIE color rendering index. The color gamut score R(g) is an improved version of the Gamut Area Index. In combination, they provide two complementary assessments to guide the optimization of future light sources. This method summarizes the findings of the Color Metric Task Group of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IES). It is adopted in the upcoming IES TM-30-2015, and is proposed for consideration with the International Commission on Illumination (CIE).

Abstract:In 1997, the CIE Technical Committee 1-34 on Testing Colons Appearance Models adopted a new colour appearance model, CIECAM97s, for cross-media colour reproduction This article describes its performance in comparison with some other colour appearance models and chromatic adaptation transforms using the most comprehensive colour appearance data sets yet accumulated. The data sets were divided into two categories: corresponding-colour and magnitude-estimation. The results shaw that the CIECAM97s model gave satisfactory predictions of both categories of data. Abstract:With the emerging demand for wide-color-gamut displays, an issue has been raised in which the commonly used color difference formulae or uniform color spaces that were derived based on the data produced in the relatively smaller color gamut could be unreliable for predicting color differences in the highly saturated color regions. A psychophysical experiment was carried out for evaluating color difference at a luminance level of 310cd/m2 on a wide-color-gamut display with an approximate DCI-P3 color gamut. Twelve color centers were selected to cover the entire gamut boundary. There were 192 pairs of samples over 12 color centers judged by 18 observers using the greyscale psychophysical method. The data set was used to test the performance of six uniform color spaces and color difference equations, CIELAB, CIEDE2000, CAM02-UCS, Jzazbz, ICTCP, and nICTCP, a newly revised ICTCP formula. The color discrimination ellipses were used to test local and global uniformity of color spaces and compared with previous studies. The results revealed that all formulae improved their performance to have a mean lightness parametric factor of about 0.5. CAM02-UCS significantly outperformed the others in overall, local, and global uniformity. The high-quality visual data set is recommended to evaluate or to derive color difference formulae for WCG applications in the future.

Abstract:A gamut compression algorithm (GCA) and a gamut extension algorithm (GEA) were proposed based on the concept of vividness. Their performance was further investigated via two psychological experiments together with some other commonly used gamut mapping algorithms (GMAs). In addition, difference uniform colour spaces (UCSs) were also evaluated in the experiments including CIELAB, CAM02-UCS and a newly proposed UCS, Jzazbz. Abstract:The paper describes a comprehensive test to evaluate the performance of current colour-difference models using available experimental datasets. In total, 28 individual datasets were accumulated to test 17 colour-difference formulae, 13 of them based on Uniform Colour Spaces (UCSs) in terms of the Standardized Residual Sum of Squares (STRESS) measure. The 28 datasets were divided into three groups: Large Colour-Difference data (LCD), Small Colour-Difference data for surface colours (SCDs), and Small Colour Difference data for display colours (SCDd). For each colour model, four versions were tested: the original model, and that including k(L)-, Gamma- and k(L)/Gamma, which are the lightness parametric factor, the colour-difference exponent factor, and the combination of both, respectively, optimized to fit particular dataset(s). The statistical F-test was applied to test the difference between each pair of models. Furthermore, parametric effects between the large/small colour-difference magnitudes, and between surface/display colours were investigated. The results showed that CAM16-UCS significantly outperformed the other models for all groups. It accurately predicted all types of data and should be proposed for colour-difference evaluation across all industries.

Abstract:An experiment was carried out to investigate the change of color appearance for 13 surface stimuli viewed under a wide range of illuminance levels (15-32000 lux) using asymmetrical matching method. Addition to the above, in the visual field, observers viewed colours in a dark (10 lux) and a bright (200000 lux) illuminance level at the same time to simulate HDR viewing condition. The results were used to understand the relationship between the color changes under HDR conditions, to generate a corresponding color dataset and to verify color appearance model, such as CIECAM16.

Abstract:Color gamut indicates the ability to display colors for a display system. Measurement of the color gamut in three-dimensional color space is important for a display system. Compared with primary triangle in CIE xy or CIE u’v’ chromaticity diagram, the influence of brightness is considered, and the three-dimensional color space is more uniform, which is closer to the actual situation of the display system [1]. In this paper, using a colorimeter, we propose a new method to measure the gamut of three primary display system by measuring some feature points. They are located on vertexes, edges and surfaces of the three-dimensional gamut boundary. Based on these feature points, the profile of the gamut is drawn in CIExyY and CIELAB space. To calculate the color gamut of the display system, Traditional method is to calculate the area of the primary triangle in CIE xy or CIE u’v’ chromaticity diagram. CIE recommended the Segment Maxima algorithm to calculate color gamut [2]. The specific process is to sample three primaries through many images, then select outermost points of the color gamut and connect into boundaries in CIELAB color space. However, it has not been reported that the gamut volume could be measured by a colorimeter. Compared with the algorithm, our measurement method is relatively efficient. The accurate gamut of color solid is obtained in CIELAB space. In general display equipment, the intensity of each primary is divided into 256 gradients (which are not nonlinear corresponding to the lightness value). 1. Seven vertexes of color solid which are (0, 0, 255), (0, 255, 0), (255, 0, 0), (0, 255, 255), (255, 0, 255), (255, 255, 0), (255, 255, 255), meaning that one or more primaries have the maximum outputs. 2. To improve the accuracy, points also need to be taken on the edges of color solid between two vertexes for measurement. The bisection points between two vertexes are (128, 0, 0), (0, 128, 0), (0, 0, 128), (0, 255, 128), (255, 0, 128), (255, 255, 128), (0, 128, 255), (255, 128, 0), (255, 128, 255), (128, 0, 255), (128, 255, 0), (128, 255, 255). The measurement is performed in a dark room. The required colors are generated by software Microsoft paint and MATLAB. CS-2000 colorimeter of Konica Minolta is used to measure the coordinates with the perspective of 0.2°. The coordinates of each color are measured for many times and the average value is taken. We measure the color gamut of three primary laser display system and LCD computer screen in CIELAB space as an example. We compare the results with gamut volume by theoretical calculation in CIELAB space [3]. The results are shown in CIELAB space in Fig. 1.

Abstract:Gamut mapping is an important component in colour management and has drawn much attention in the last decades. However, previous researches mainly focused gamut mapping algorithms (GMAs) and paid little attention to the uniform colour space (UCS) where gamut mapping was taken place. In this paper, two new GMAs were proposed and compared with other commonly adopted GMAs. Two specific UCSs, i.e. CAM16-UCS and J z a z b z were tested by a psychophysical experiment to verify their impact on the mapping performance. Experimental results show that a newly proposed GMA based on vividness perception performed well and J z a z b z is a promising UCS for gamut mapping.
