Abstract:The notion of normal elements for finite fields extension has been generalized as k-normal elements by Huczynska et al. [3]. The number of k-normal elements for a fixed finite field extension has been calculated and estimated [3], and several methods to construct k-normal elements have been presented [1,3]. Several criteria on k-normal element have been given [1,2]. In this paper we present a new criterion on k-normal elements by using idempotents and show some examples. Such criterion has been given for usual normal element before [6].

Abstract:In this paper we study the normal bases for Galois ring extension ${{R}} / {Z}_{p^r}$ where ${R}$ = ${GR}$(pr, n). We present a criterion on normal basis for ${{R}} / {Z}_{p^r}$ and reduce this problem to one of finite field extension $\overline{R} / \overline{Z}_{p^r}=F_{q} / F_{p}  (q=p^n)$ by Theorem 1. We determine all optimal normal bases for Galois ring extension.

Abstract:Normal bases are widely used in applications of Galois fields and Galois rings in areas such as coding, encryption symmetric algorithms (block cipher), signal processing, and so on. In this paper, we study the normal bases for Galois ring extension R / Z p r , where R = GR ( p r , n ) . We present a criterion on the normal basis for R / Z p r and reduce this problem to one of finite field extension R ¯ / Z ¯ p r = F q / F p ( q = p n ) by Theorem 1. We determine all optimal normal bases for Galois ring extension.

Abstract:A formula on the complexity of the normal bases generated by prime Gauss period over finite fields is presented in terms of cyclotomic numbers. Then, the authors determine explicitly the complexity of such normal bases and their dual bases in several cases where the related cyclotomic numbers have been calculated. Particularly, the authors ¯nd several series of such normal bases with low complexity.

Abstract:Binary field extensions are fundamental to many applications, such as multivariate public key cryptography, code-based cryptography, and error-correcting codes. Their implementation requires a foundation in number theory and algebraic geometry and necessitates the utilization of efficient bases. The continuous increase in the power of computation, and the design of new (quantum) computers increase the threat to the security of systems and impose increasingly demanding encryption standards with huge polynomial or extension degrees. For cryptographic purposes or other common implementations of finite fields arithmetic, it is essential to explore a wide range of implementations with diverse bases. Unlike some bases, polynomial and Gaussian normal bases are well-documented and widely employed. In this paper, we explore other forms of bases of $\mathbb{F}_{2^n}$ over $\mathbb{F}_2$ to demonstrate efficient implementation of operations within different ranges. To achieve this, we leverage results on fast computations and elliptic periods introduced by Couveignes and Lercier, and subsequently expanded upon by Ezome and Sall. This leads to the establishment of new tables for efficient computation over binary fields.

Abstract:This is an introduction to the theory of normal bases of finite fields. The first few chapters cover a wide range of topics on the theory of normal bases of finite fields. Most standard definitions and results, including proofs are given. The last few chapters cover the theory of guassian and period normal bases of finite fields of low degrees. The last chapter presents the asymptotic proofs of the existence of primitive polynomials of degree n with approximately n/2 arbitrary coefficients, and primitive normal polynomials of arbitrary traces.

Abstract:Let $ \mathbb{F}_q $ be the finite field of $ q $ elements, and $ \mathbb{F}_{q^{n}} $ its extension of degree $ n $. A normal basis of $ \mathbb{F}_{q^{n}} $ over $ \mathbb{F}_q $ is a basis of the form $ \{\alpha, \alpha^{q}, \cdots, \alpha^{q^{n-1}}\} $. Some problems on normal bases can be finally reduced to the determination of the irreducible factors of the polynomial $ x^{n}-1 $ in $ \mathbb{F}_q $, while the latter is closely related to the cyclotomic polynomials. Denote by $ \mathfrak{F}(x^{n}-1) $ the set of all distinct monic irreducible factors of $ x^{n}-1 $ in $ \mathbb{F}_q $. The criteria for \begin{document}$ |\mathfrak{F}(x^{n}-1)|\leq 2 $\end{document} have been studied in the literature. In this paper, we provide the sufficient and necessary conditions for \begin{document}$ |\mathfrak{F}(x^{n}-1)| = s, $\end{document} where $ s $ is a positive integer by using the properties of cyclotomic polynomials and results from the Diophantine equations. As an application, we obtain the sufficient and necessary conditions for \begin{document}$ |\mathfrak{F}(x^{n}-1)| = 3, 4, 5. $\end{document}

Abstract:An irreducible polynomial over F q is said to be normal over F q if its roots are linearly independent over F q . We show that there is a polynomial h n ( X 1 , … , X n ) ∈ Z [ X 1 , … , X n ] , independent of q, such that if an irreducible polynomial f = X n + a 1 X n − 1 + ⋯ + a n ∈ F q [ X ] is such that h n ( a 1 , … , a n ) ≠ 0 , then f is normal over F q . The polynomial h n ( X 1 , … , X n ) is computed explicitly for n ≤ 5 and partially for n = 6 . When char F q = p , we also show that there is a polynomial h p , n ( X 1 , … , X n ) ∈ F p [ X 1 , … , X n ] , depending on p, which is simpler than h n but has the same property. These results remain valid for monic separable irreducible polynomials over an arbitrary field with a cyclic Galois group.

More precisely, for a nonabelian extension, we construct completely normal elements for Drinfeld modular function fields using Siegel functions in function fields. Abstract:Let q be a power of 2, n be a positive integer, Fqn denote a finite field with qn elements. In this paper, we consider the existence of the some specific elements in Fqn. The main results obtained in this paper are listed as follows: There is an element in Fqn such that both ξ and ξ+ξ-1 are primitive elements of Fqn and ξ + ξ-1 is also a normal element of Fqn if 1) either n|(q - 1), and n ≥ 37, or 2) n|(q - 1), and n ≥ 34, s ≥ 6.

Abstract:In 2022, S.D. Cohen and the two authors introduced and studied the concept of $(r, n)$-freeness on finite cyclic groups $G$ for suitable integers $r, n$, which is an arithmetic way of capturing elements of special forms that lie in the subgroups of $G$. Combining this machinery with some character sum techniques, they explored the existence of points $(x_0, y_0)$ on affine curves $y^n=f(x)$ defined over a finite field $\mathbb F$ whose coordinates are generators of the multiplicative cyclic group $\mathbb F^*$. In this paper we develop the natural additive counterpart of this work for finite fields. Namely, any finite extension $\mathbb E$ of a finite field $\mathbb F$ with $Q$ elements is a cyclic $\mathbb F[x]$-module induced by the Frobenius automorphism $\alpha\mapsto \alpha^{Q}$, and any generator of this module is said to be a normal element over $\mathbb F$. We introduce and study the concept of $(f, g)$-freeness on this module structure for suitable polynomials $f, g\in \mathbb F[x]$. As a main application of the machinery developed in this paper, we study the existence of $\mathbb F_{p^n}$-rational points in the Artin-Schreier curve $\mathfrak A_f : y^p-y=f(x)$ whose coordinates are normal over the prime field $\mathbb F_p$ and establish concrete results.

Abstract:A primitive completely normal element for an extension $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}/\mathbb{F}_{q}$ of Galois fields is a generator of the multiplicative group of $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$, which simultaneously is normal over every intermediate field of that extension. We are going to prove that such a generator exists when $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}/\mathbb{F}_{q}$ is an 'exceptional' regular extension. In combination with [6] our investigations altogether settle the existence of primitive completely normal bases for any regular extension. An important feature of the class of regular extensions is that they comprise every extension of prime power degree.

Abstract:Let $q$ be an even prime power and $m\geq2$ an integer. By $\mathbb{F}_q$, we denote the finite field of order $q$ and by $\mathbb{F}_{q^m}$ its extension degree $m$. In this paper we investigate the existence of a primitive normal pair $(\alpha, \, f(\alpha))$, with $f(x)= \dfrac{ax^2+bx+c}{dx+e} \in \mathbb{F}_{q^m}(x)$, where the rank of the matrix $F= \begin{pmatrix}a \, &b\, & c\\ 0\, &d \, &e \end{pmatrix}$ $\in M_{2 \times 3}(\Fm) $ is 2. Namely, we establish sufficient conditions to show that nearly all fields of even characteristic possess such elements, except for $\begin{pmatrix} 1 \, &1 \, & 0\\ 0\, &1 \, &0 \end{pmatrix}$ if $q=2$ and $m$ is odd, and then we provide an explicit list of possible and genuine exceptional pairs $(q,m)$.

Abstract:Given a prime power $q$ and a positive integer $n$, let $\mathbb{F}_{q^{n}}$ represents a finite extension of degree $n$ of the finite field ${\mathbb{F}_{q}}$. In this article, we investigate the existence of $m$ elements in arithmetic progression, where every element is primitive and at least one is normal with prescribed norms. Moreover, for $n\geq6,q=3^k,m=2$ we establish that there are only $10$ possible exceptions.

Abstract:Let Fq be a finite field with q=pk elements. We prove that for any given n⩾7, and any elements a,b∈Fq, a≠0, there exists a primitive normal polynomial f(x) of degree n, f(x)=xn−σ1xn−1+⋯+(−1)nσn, with the first two coefficients σ1, σ2 prescribed as a, b, respectively. This result strengthens the results of the existence of primitive polynomials with two coefficients prescribed [S.D. Cohen, D. Mills, Primitive polynomials with the first and second coefficients prescribed, Finite Fields Appl. 9 (2003) 334–350; W.B. Han, The coefficients of primitive polynomials over finite fields, Math. Comp. 65 (1996) 331–340; W.B. Han, On two exponential sums and their applications, Finite Fields Appl. 3 (1997) 115–130] and the existence of primitive normal bases with prescribed trace [S.D. Cohen, D. Hachenberger, Primitive normal bases with prescribed trace, Appl. Algebra Engrg. Comm. Comput. 9 (1999) 383–403]. In order to use the p-adic method which proposed by the first two authors, we first lift the definition of both primitive and normal from finite fields to Galois rings. Then we discuss the existence of lifted primitive normal polynomials over Galois rings and finally establish the existence of primitive normal polynomials with the first two coefficients prescribed with the help of character sums over Galois rings and Cohen's various sieve techniques. In order to make this paper more succinct, we deal with the case n=4,5,6 in another paper since the computation is more miscellaneous and complicated.
