Abstract:In this paper we study the satisfiability and solutions of group equations when combinatorial, algebraic and language-theoretic constraints are imposed on the solutions. We show that the solutions to equations with length, lexicographic order, abelianisation or context-free constraints added, can be effectively produced in finitely generated virtually abelian groups. Crucially, we translate each of the constraints above into a rational set in an effective way, and so reduce each problem to solving equations with rational constraints, which is decidable and well understood in virtually abelian groups. A byproduct of our results is that the growth series of a virtually abelian group, with respect to any generating set and any weight, is effectively computable. This series is known to be rational by a result of Benson, but his proof is non-constructive.

A Process Calculus with Logical Operators

Abstract: In order to combine operational and logical styles of specifications in one unified framework, the notion of logic labelled transition systems (Logic LTS, for short) has been presented and explored by L\"{u}ttgen and Vogler in [TCS 373(1-2):19-40; Inform. & Comput. 208:845-867]. In contrast with usual LTS, two logical constructors $\wedge$ and $\vee$ over Logic LTSs are introduced to describe logical combinations of specifications. Hitherto such framework has been dealt with in considerable depth, however, process algebraic style way has not yet been involved and the axiomatization of constructors over Logic LTSs is absent. This paper tries to develop L\"{u}ttgen and Vogler's work along this direction. We will present a process calculus for Logic LTSs (CLL, for short). The language CLL is explored in detail from two different but equivalent views. Based on behavioral view, the notion of ready simulation is adopted to formalize the refinement relation, and the behavioral theory is developed. Based on proof-theoretic view, a sound and ground-complete axiomatic system for CLL is provided, which captures operators in CLL through (in)equational laws.

Compared with the usual inference systems for process calculi, in addition to axioms about process operators, such system contains a number of axioms to characterize the interaction between process operators and logical operators.

CTL* Verification and Synthesis using Existential Horn Clauses

Abstract:This work proposes a novel approach for automatic verification and synthesis of infinite-state reactive programs with respect to ${CTL}^*$ specifications, based on translation to Existential Horn Clauses (EHCs). $CTL^*$ is a powerful temporal logic, which subsumes the temporal logics LTL and CTL, both widely used in specification, verification, and synthesis of complex systems. EHCs with its solver E-HSF, is an extension of Constrained Horn Clauses, which includes existential quantification as well as the power of handling well-foundedness. We develop the translation system \textit{Trans}, which given a verification problem consisting of a program $P$ and a specification $\phi$, builds a set of EHCs which is satisfiable iff $P$ satisfies $\phi$. We also develop a synthesis algorithm that given a program with holes in conditions and assignments, fills the holes so that the synthesized program satisfies the given $CTL^*$ specification. We prove that our verification and synthesis algorithms are both sound and relative complete. Finally, we present case studies to demonstrate the applicability of our algorithms for $CTL^*$ verification and synthesis.

Progress on Set-solutions of the Quantum Yang-baxter Equation

Abstract:How to give the set-solutions of the quantum Yang-Baxter equation is an important subject[1]. The aim of this paper is to study this subject under inverse semigroups. For an inverse semigroup S and a map R:S × S→S×S, we give a sufficient and necessary condition for R to be a solution of the quantum Yang-Baxter equation, and then for the case of Clifford semigroups, four set-solutions of the quantum Yang-Baxter equation are obtained. The solutions of the equation under the meaning of groups are generalized. This is an improvement of the study on Drinfeld problem.
Understanding the Relative Strength of QBF CDCL Solvers and QBF Resolution

Abstract:QBF solvers implementing the QCDCL paradigm are powerful algorithms that successfully tackle many computationally complex applications. However, our theoretical understanding of the strength and limitations of these QCDCL solvers is very limited. In this paper we suggest to formally model QCDCL solvers as proof systems. We define different policies that can be used for decision heuristics and unit propagation and give rise to a number of sound and complete QBF proof systems (and hence new QCDCL algorithms). With respect to the standard policies used in practical QCDCL solving, we show that the corresponding QCDCL proof system is incomparable (via exponential separations) to Q-resolution, the classical QBF resolution system used in the literature. This is in stark contrast to the propositional setting where CDCL and resolution are known to be p-equivalent. This raises the question what formulas are hard for standard QCDCL, since Q-resolution lower bounds do not necessarily apply to QCDCL as we show here. In answer to this question we prove several lower bounds for QCDCL, including exponential lower bounds for a large class of random QBFs. We also introduce a strengthening of the decision heuristic used in classical QCDCL, which does not necessarily decide variables in order of the prefix, but still allows to learn asserting clauses. We show that with this decision policy, QCDCL can be exponentially faster on some formulas. We further exhibit a QCDCL proof system that is p-equivalent to Q-resolution. In comparison to classical QCDCL, this new QCDCL version adapts both decision and unit propagation policies.

Abstract:The survey provides an overview of the work done in the last 10 years to characterise solutions to equations in groups in terms of formal languages. We begin with the work of Ciobanu, Diekert and Elder, who showed that solutions to systems of equations in free groups in terms of reduced words are expressible as EDT0L languages. We provide a sketch of their algorithm, and describe how the free group results extend to hyperbolic groups. The characterisation of solutions as EDT0L languages is very robust, and many group constructions preserve this, as shown by Levine. The most recent progress in the area has been made for groups without negative curvature, such as virtually abelian, the integral Heisenberg group, or the soluble Baumslag-Solitar groups, where the approaches to describing the solutions are different from the negative curvature groups. In virtually abelian groups the solutions sets are in fact rational, and one can obtain them as $m$-regular sets. In the Heisenberg group producing the solutions to a single equation reduces to understanding the solutions to quadratic Diophantine equations and uses number theoretic techniques. In the Baumslag-Solitar groups the methods are combinatorial, and focus on the interplay of normal forms to solve particular classes of equations. In conclusion, EDT0L languages give an effective and simple combinatorial characterisation of sets of seemingly high complexity in many important classes of groups.

clauseSMT: A NLSAT-Based Clause-Level Framework for Satisfiability Modulo Nonlinear Real Arithmetic Theory

Abstract:Model-constructing satisfiability calculus (MCSAT) framework has been applied to SMT problems on different arithmetic theories. NLSAT, an implementation using cylindrical algebraic decomposition for explanation, is especially competitive among nonlinear real arithmetic constraints. However, current Conflict-Driven Clause Learning (CDCL)-style algorithms only consider literal information for decision, and thus ignore clause-level influence on arithmetic variables. As a consequence, NLSAT encounters unnecessary conflicts caused by improper literal decisions. In this work, we analyze the literal decision caused conflicts, and introduce clause-level information with a direct effect on arithmetic variables. Two main algorithm improvements are presented: clause-level feasible-set based look-ahead mechanism and arithmetic propagation based branching heuristic. We implement our solver named clauseSMT on our dynamic variable ordering framework. Experiments show that clauseSMT is competitive on nonlinear real arithmetic theory against existing SMT solvers (cvc5, Z3, Yices2), and outperforms all these solvers on satisfiable instances of SMT(QF_NRA) in SMT-LIB. The effectiveness of our proposed methods are also studied.

Abstract:We establish consequences of the moving form of Schmidt’s Subspace Theorem. Indeed, we obtain inequalities that bound the logarithmic greatest common divisor of moving multivariable polynomials evaluated at moving S S -unit arguments. In doing so, we complement recent work of Levin. As an additional application, we obtain results that pertain to the greatest common divisor problem for algebraic linear recurrence sequences. These observations are motivated by previous related works of Corvaja-Zannier, Levin, and others.

Congruence Closure Modulo Groups

Abstract:This paper presents a new framework for constructing congruence closure of a finite set of ground equations over uninterpreted symbols and interpreted symbols for the group axioms. In this framework, ground equations are flattened into certain forms by introducing new constants, and a completion procedure is performed on ground flat equations. The proposed completion procedure uses equational inference rules and constructs a ground convergent rewrite system for congruence closure with such interpreted symbols. If the completion procedure terminates, then it yields a decision procedure for the word problem for a finite set of ground equations with respect to the group axioms. This paper also provides a sufficient terminating condition of the completion procedure for constructing a ground convergent rewrite system from ground flat equations containing interpreted symbols for the group axioms. In addition, this paper presents a new method for constructing congruence closure of a finite set of ground equations containing interpreted symbols for the semigroup, monoid, and the multiple disjoint sets of group axioms, respectively, using the proposed framework.

Abstract:ECLiPSe is a Prolog-based programming system, aimed at the development and deployment of constraint programming applications. It is also used for teaching most aspects of combinatorial problem solving, e.g. problem modelling, constraint programming, mathematical programming, and search techniques. It uses an extended Prolog as its high-level modelling and control language, complemented by several constraint solver libraries, interfaces to third-party solvers, an integrated development environment and interfaces for embedding into host environments. This paper discusses language extensions, implementation aspects, components and tools that we consider relevant on the way from Logic Programming to Constraint Logic Programming.

Abstract:Although reasoning about equations over strings has been extensively studied for several decades, little research has been done for equational reasoning on general clauses over strings. This paper introduces a new superposition calculus with strings and present an equational theorem proving framework for clauses over strings. It provides a saturation procedure for clauses over strings and show that the proposed superposition calculus with contraction rules is refutationally complete. In particular, this paper presents a new decision procedure for solving word problems over strings and provides a new method of solving unification problems over strings w.r.t. a set of conditional equations R over strings if R can be finitely saturated under the proposed inference system with contraction rules.

Explaining Competitive-Level Programming Solutions using LLMs

Abstract:In this paper, we approach competitive-level programming problem-solving as a composite task of reasoning and code generation. We propose a novel method to automatically annotate natural language explanations to \textit{<problem, solution>} pairs. We show that despite poor performance in solving competitive-level programming problems, state-of-the-art LLMs exhibit a strong capacity in describing and explaining solutions. Our explanation generation methodology can generate a structured solution explanation for the problem containing descriptions and analysis. To evaluate the quality of the annotated explanations, we examine their effectiveness in two aspects: 1) satisfying the human programming expert who authored the oracle solution, and 2) aiding LLMs in solving problems more effectively. The experimental results on the CodeContests dataset demonstrate that while LLM GPT3.5's and GPT-4's abilities in describing the solution are comparable, GPT-4 shows a better understanding of the key idea behind the solution.

Abstract:We introduce an approach that aims to combine the usage of satisfiability modulo theories (SMT) solvers with the Combinatory Logic Synthesizer (CL)S framework. (CL)S is a tool for the automatic composition of software components from a user-specified repository. The framework yields a tree grammar that contains all composed terms that comply with a target type. Type specifications for (CL)S are based on combinatory logic with intersection types. Our approach translates the tree grammar into SMT functions, which allows the consideration of additional domain-specific constraints. We demonstrate the usefulness of our approach in several experiments.
