Abstract:Chinese society is facing a decline in social trust, a serious crisis which is escalating as modernization continues. In this article the authors apply Durkheim’s social transitional theory to explain this disconcerting phenomenon, using data from the Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS) 2013. The study finds that economic development as measured by per capita GDP of counties in China has given rise to social anomie, which has led to a reduction in social trust. With the rapid onset of modernization, social norms have gradually fallen by the wayside and new social integration mechanisms have not yet been fully established, resulting in a state of generalized social anomie in China.
Perceived Social Mobility and Political Trust in China

Abstract:Existing studies have traced China's high political trust to three sources: traditional culture, the state's success in fostering economic growth, and ideological propaganda. We identify a fourth source: perceived social mobility We argue that when people perceive a reasonable chance for upward mobility based on personal initiatives and efforts, the status quo becomes more justifiable because individuals are responsible for their own successes and failures. Perceived social mobility thus instills a sense of optimism and fairness and exonerates the regime from many blames, thereby enhancing political trust. Regression analysis of the China portion of the 2007 World Values Survey data shows that respondents who saw themselves as having choices and control in life were indeed more likely to trust the ruling communist party. The respondents' overall level of perceived social mobility is also high, which is consistent with the massive shake-up of the preexisting social order in China's reform era.
Social Trust, Interpersonal Trust and Self-Rated Health in China: a Multi-Level Study

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Trust is important for health at both the individual and societal level. Previous research using Western concepts of trust has shown that a high level of trust in society can positively affect individuals' health; however, it has been found that the concepts and culture of trust in China are different from those in Western countries and research on the relationship between trust and health in China is scarce.METHOD:The analyses use data from the national scale China General Social Survey (CGSS) on adults aged above 18 in 2005 and 2010. Two concepts of trust ("out-group" and "in-group" trust) are used to examine the relationship between trust and self-rated health in China. Multilevel logistical models are applied, examining the trust at the individual and societal level on individuals' self-rated health.RESULTS:In terms of interpersonal trust, both "out-group" and "in-group" trust are positively associated with good health in 2005 and 2010. At the societal level, the relationships between the two concepts of trust and health are different. In 2005, higher "out-group" social trust (derived from trust in strangers) is positively associated with better health; however, higher "in-group" social trust (derived from trust in most people) is negatively associated with good health in 2010. The cross-level interactions show that lower educated individuals (no education or only primary level), rural residents and those on lower incomes are the most affected groups in societies with higher "out-group" social trust; whereas people with lower levels of educational attainment, a lower income, and those who think that most people can be trusted are the most affected groups in societies with higher "in-group" social trust.CONCLUSION:High levels of interpersonal trust are of benefit to health. Higher "out-group" social trust is positively associated with better health; while higher "in-group" social trust is negatively associated with good health. Individuals with different levels of educational attainment are affected by trust differently.
Constructed Hierarchical Government Trust in China: Formation Mechanism and Political Effects

Abstract:The Chinese government has long enjoyed a higher level of popular trust in its central authority than in its local governments, which means that the Chinese public's trust in government is hierarchical. While existing research has highlighted hierarchical trust's role in bolstering the Chinese regime's rule, the formation mechanism for such trust has not been adequately explored empirically. In this paper, we use data from the China General Social Survey (2010) to explore the formation mechanism of hierarchical government trust and find that economic development, adherence to traditional values, and high frequency of Internet usage all contribute to the decrease of hierarchical government trust. These findings challenge conventional views that cultural traditions and Internet use help sustain hierarchical government trust and show that propaganda is the only variable that sustains the pattern of hierarchical government trust. We further challenge existing literature that views hierarchical government trust as a natural outcome of China's hierarchical administrative structure and empirically prove that such trust is in fact intentionally constructed by the central government through propaganda campaigns and an institutional design aimed at strengthening the central government's authority and at guiding people to divert dissent to local governments. Our findings make an important contribution to the dialogue and highlight a new area of authoritarian durability.
The Radius of Generalized Trust in Contemporary China

Abstract:Drawing on survey data collected in 2011, this study investigates the radius of generalized trust in contemporary China. Based on the results of the ordinary least squares and finite mixture models, we find the average radius of generalized trust in the urban population is wider than that of the rural population. In addition, on average, married people show a narrower circle of generalized trust in both urban and rural areas. Minorities, better educated individuals in rural China and individuals holding a rural household registration status in urban China have a wider radius. There is a trade-off relationship between the level and the radius of generalized trust, and cross-cohort analysis provides preliminary evidence of a longitudinal extension in the radius of generalized trust over the past decades, especially after the launch of the reform and opening-up policy. Finally, identity-based social participation significantly curtails people's radius of generalized trust in urban areas.

Abstract:This article focuses on the changing trends in political trust in China. Based on data drawn from the Asian Barometer Survey for 2002, 2008, and 2011, as well as the Chinese General Social Survey for 2010 and 2012, we find a declining trend in the level of political trust in China, whether it be trust in the central government, trust in the local government, or the central–local government trust gap. Additionally, the results of our analysis show a strong cohort effect on the erosion of political trust. This study provides solid empirical evidence of declining political trust in China and increases our understanding of the changing dynamics of political trust. By analysing changes in citizens’ values and in the political expectations of the new generation, this article sheds light on the antecedents of political trust in China, which is gradually changing across different generations.

Abstract:Social trust is an important issue in the study of social capital. The level of social trust is closely related to social stability and social harmony. This paper studies the dynamic evolution of social trust during the transforming period in Chinese society by using the data of 12 nationwide questionnaire surveys from 1990 to 2010. The results of the study show that compared with other countries, the stock of social trust maintains at a high level in Chinese society. Furthermore, this paper also analyzes the reasons for the high stock of social trust. It concludes that older people offer more trust to society than younger ones, and those with higher education level offer more trust to society than those with lower education level.

Abstract:We study whether greater social trust is associated with a lower incidence of corporate misconduct. Both social norm and network theory suggest that social trust can affect managerial behavior and reduce the likelihood of misconduct behavior. Consistent with this prediction, we find that social trust is negatively associated with corporate misconduct behavior. Moreover, we show that, when media coverage is higher, the negative relation between social trust and corporate misconduct behavior is more pronounced. Further analyses suggest that social trust can help mitigate both disclosure-related and nondisclosure-related misconduct.

Abstract:The market system and the state redistribution system,the two fundamental institutional environments in current China,are the focal theme in the academic research on the Chinese society in transition,both at home and abroad.Based on previous discussions on these two types of institutional environments,this study shifted attention from life opportunities to individuals' generalized trust as a function of different institutional contexts.Using propensity score matching to deal with potential selection biases,this study analyzed the data from Chinese General Social Survey 2010,which revealed significant effects of institutional contexts on individuals' generalized trust.In particular,employees in the public sector,as compared with those in the private sector(foreign-invested and privately owned enterprises),had higher levels of generalized trust,which reflected the nonmaterial consequences of different institutional arrangements in China.Further mediation tests indicated that political participation and relative deprivation significantly mediated between employment sectors and generalized trust.Those who worked in the public sector possessed a higher level of internal political efficacy and were more likely to get involved in community voting.Such an attitude and behavioral participation promoted their propensity of trusting generalized others.The lower level of their relative deprivation in regards to social and economic status also helped with building their higher generalized trust.
Radicalizing and Conservatizing: Ageing Effects on Political Trust in Asia, 2001–2016

Abstract:Previous studies on political trust found ageing leads to support for authority, while education encourages a critical view of governments. We speculated the two effects would moderate each other and complicate the story. By applying Hierarchical age-period-cohort (HAPC) modelling to the Asian Barometer Survey (2001–2016) data, we found significant interaction effects of age and education in shaping political trust. During the transition from youth to middle age, ageing reinforces people’s original disposition formed in the early years. From middle to old age, ageing mainly plays a conservatizing role. Ageing also conditions the educational gap in political trust: people with little education’s political trust increases as they age; well-educated individuals’ political trust decline until middle age and conservatize later. In sum, ageing has a variant effect during the life course; we found evidence of ageing’s radicalizing and conservatizing effects on political trust in the context of Asia.
Changing Perceived Importance of Religion in Mainland China, 1990-2012: an Age-Period-Cohort Analysis

Abstract:The comprehensive social reform and relaxation of religious regulation in mainland China have encouraged scholars to propose a revival thesis of religion, predicting a rising prevalence of religious adherence in the Reform Era. This study extends the revival thesis by focusing attention on people's subjective religiosity, and investigates age, period, and cohort effects on the transition in perceived importance of religion from 1990 to 2012. Capitalizing on the repeated cross-sectional data of the China sample in the World Values Survey, this study shows that (1) The senior population, relative to the younger counterpart, attaches greater importance to religion. (2) The net period effect suggests that Chinese citizens' perceived importance of religion follows an upward trend by the early 2000s, but no significant growth is detected henceforward. (3) The cohorts who experienced the anti-religion Mao's Era in their adolescent life course stage have an evidently lower probability of viewing religion to be important, in relation to the cohorts of the Reform Era. Theoretical implications of the empirical age-period-cohort patterns for the religious economies theory and change of Chinese religious landscape are discussed.
Political Trust in Transitional China:Measurement Approaches and Overall Perspectives

Abstract:Along with rapid political and social change, political trust has become an important concept in analyzing Chinese politics. This paper used the survey data from 1990to 2009to show the overall picture of the evolution of political trust in transitional China. The overall political trust in transitional China is relative high. The public trust in the central government, NPC and other symbolic governments are higher than the public trust in local governments, civil servants and other executive government. China ranks very high on the public trust in symbolic government, but ranks slightly lower on the public trust in executive government. The level of public trust in various institutions undergoes complex dynamics during the transition period, but the overall trend is declining. The decline of political trust is caused by the changing social structure, such as the dynamics of political generations, education and income stratification. To be concluding, there exist four structural characteristics of political trust in transitional China: the public trust in central political institutions are higher than the public trust in local political institutions; the citizens trust political institutions more than political elites; there are different public trust patterns between law institutions and administrative institutions; regime trust, institutional trust and the trust in politicians are highly correlated. It is indispensable for us to understand these characteristics to foster political trust in transitional China.
Government Governance And Political Trust In Transition China: An Empirical Analysis

Abstract:Recently, building a service-oriented government and pursuing good governance have become indispensable choices for Chinese government to promote socio-economic development. As the tie between individual citizen and various government institutions, political trust is not only regarded as an important indicator of political legitimacy embodying citizens' support for government, but also treated as scarce resource which is helpful to enhance governance performance. Based on 2008 Chinese Public Attitudes towards Citizenship National Survey and relevant macro data, this paper tries to explore quantitatively the complex relationship between government governance and political trust in transition China, especially the effect of economic development, social welfare and pure public goods supply on political trust. OLS model shows that there is a significant relationship between the positive retrospective and prospective assessment of economic development, social welfare and public goods supply and high level of political trust, and yet retrospective assessments have more explanatory power than prospective ones. Besides, subjective assessment of pure public goods supply, but not subjective assessment of economic development, has the strongest influence on political trust. HLM model suggests that objective county governance performance has a significant effect on average political trust at county level: the higher the per capita welfare fiscal expenditure and the lower the Gini coefficient and unemployment rate at county level, the higher the average political trust at county level; however, high per capita GDP doesn't foster political trust, but reduce political trust weakly. We conclude that though economic development is still one of the roots for political trust, social welfare and pure public goods supply are coming to replace economic development as new important sources for political trust.

Abstract:Despite the well-received detrimental effect of socio-economic inequality on generalized trust, the role of subjective inequality, as defined to be the joint outcome of one's perception of factual unequal social resource distribution and normative belief about the ideal state of inequality, is elusive, which constitutes a research gap, especially in light of the increasing evidence for the independent role of subjective inequality in people's social life. Drawing on the sixth wave of the World Values Survey, this study shows that, other things being equal, one's subjective judgment of inequality has an inverted-U shape relation with generalized trust, from those who perceive the society to run short of inequality to motivate social members, to those who regard the current situation of inequality to be too serious. Such a curvilinear pattern is robust by applying to the trust in people one meets for the first time, and holds across countries with different economic, institutional, and cultural characteristics. Theoretical and policy implications are discussed.
Before the Emergence of Critical Citizens: Economic Development and Political Trust in China

Abstract:Political trust has been declining among the publics of almost all advanced industrial societies in recent years. This has been attributed to a Materialist-Postmaterialist value shift, which has given rise to a public that is less deferential to authority and increasingly ready to challenge government. This phenomenon has been interpreted as a 'crisis of democracy'. Although one might expect to find low level of political trust in repressive authoritarian societies, survey data indicates that political trust in China is actually very high. Does this simply mean that people are afraid to express any opinions that might be viewed as critical of authority? As this article will demonstrate, this does not seem to be the case. The Chinese public expresses fairly strong criticism of some aspects of Chinese society - but they express high levels of confidence in the national government. Although rich democracies provide both a higher standard of living and more personal freedom than is available to the average Chinese citizen, the Chinese public expresses higher levels of confidence in government than those found in most advanced industrial societies. We conclude that economic development has the immediate effect of enhancing public support for the government - but in the long run it also leads to value changes that promote critical citizens. At least for now, the regime-enhancing effect of economic development still dominates the regime-eroding effect. The effect of changing values on distrust of government is largely overwhelmed by the support for government brought by the increased level of affluence.
Outward Specific Trust in the Balancing of Hierarchical Government Trust: Evidence from Mainland China.

Abstract:This study elaborates the link between social trust and government trust by investigating how the extent of outwardness in one's specific trusting relation, as coalescence of trust strength and radius, relates to the varying trust in governments of different administrative levels. Using survey data collected in China, a country featured by the hierarchical government trust and differential mode of interpersonal association, we show that, in both urban and rural areas, the outward orientation of interpersonal trust is positively associated with the trust in the subnational governments, while being independent from the confidence in the central government, suggesting a less hierarchical and more balanced attitude toward government trust. One's generalized trust fails to show such a pattern. This study illustrates a handy measure that combines trust radius and trust strength and highlights the relevance of specific trust for political attitudes in an authoritarian regime.
Can Bureaucrats Break Trust? Testing Cultural and Institutional Theories of Trust with Chinese Panel Data

Abstract:What is the relationship between trust and the quality of political institutions in a society? According to an influential cultural perspective, social trust—the belief that most people can be trusted—is a value inculcated during individuals’ formative years, and remains fixed afterward. A second perspective holds that social trust reflects experiences throughout the life course, particularly interactions with public institutions and officials. The authors test these cultural and institutional theories using data from three waves of the China Family Panel Studies, assessing how political and social trust respond to treatment by public officials that respondents consider unfair. The authors find that such experiences, which they show in many cases likely meant being a victim of corruption, are associated with declines in trust. Yet the effects are short lived: within two years both types of trust revert to their original levels. These results therefore provide mixed support for both theories and suggest a reconciliation between them.
The Dual Effect of Economic Development on Trust in the Central Government: Evidence from Two Waves of a National Survey in China*

Abstract:Abstract:Using individual-level survey data while incorporating county/district-level information on per capita gross domestic product, this study finds that economic development in China has a dual effect on popular trust in the central government. First, positive individual-level perception of family economic conditions (compared to the past) increases trust in central government. Second, county/district-level per capita GDP is negatively correlated with individual-level trust in the central government. Methodologically, the article suggests that researchers may conduct contextualized thought experiment to establish logical priority of one event over another, particularly when it is impractical to empirically determine the temporal sequence of phenomena that are observed simultaneously in cross-sectional surveys. The article also suggests that China scholars may employ cross-region comparison as a substitute for longitudinal research when it comes to projecting long-term effects of quantitatively traceable changes such as economic development.

A Typology of Political Trustors in Contemporary China: The Relevance of Authoritarian Culture and Perceived Institutional Performance

Abstract:Drawing on measures of diffuse and specific political support, this article proposes a typology of political trustors and investigates how it is related to authoritarian culture and perceived institutional performance. Using data from the Chinese Social Trust Survey 2011, we find that (1) compliants whose specific support and diffuse support are both high occupy the largest proportion, although critical citizens (high diffuse support but low specific support), contingentists (low diffuse support but high specific support), and cynics (low levels of both diffuse and specific support) also respectively stand for a considerable fraction of the population. (2) Notwithstanding the general positive correlation trustors of political institutions and trustors of political actors still diverge from each other for a noteworthy proportion of respondents. (3) The average level of perceived institutional performance and the extent of adherence to traditional authoritarian culture are both positively correlated with the likelihood of being a compliant, while both negatively correlated with the likelihood of being a cynic. In contrast, having faith in authoritarian culture promotes, while perceived institutional performance abates, the odds of being a critical citizen. The pattern for contingentists is reversed compared with that of critical citizens.

Abstract:Two studies investigated the cross‐temporal and cross‐sectional associations between income inequality and interpersonal trust in China. In Study 1, a cross‐temporal meta‐analysis involving 141 studies (N = 64,853) found that Chinese college students' scores on the Interpersonal Trust Scale (Rotter, 1967) decreased 0.54 SD from 1998 to 2016, and that the decline in interpersonal trust across birth cohorts was explained by earlier income inequality index in China. In Study 2, a cross‐regional analysis showed that Chinese citizens in provinces with more income inequality (vs. less inequality) perceived the local government to be less trustworthy and, in turn, reported lower levels of interpersonal trust. These findings contribute to the understanding of the rising income inequality as an explanation for the waning interpersonal trust in China, and point to a crucial channel connecting income inequality with interpersonal trust.
