Abstract:In a cloud computing environment, a great many users may access to the ultra-large-scale, dynamically scalable and totally virtualized data centers over wide area Internet across organizational environments. It is a significant issue to ensure high availability, high fault tolerance and high efficiency accesses to such Internet based data centers where failures are normal. To reduce user waiting time, increase data availability, and improve system task successful execution rate, replicating the popular data to multiple suitable locations is an advisable choice, as users can access the data from a nearby data center. In this paper, a novel dynamic data replication strategy is put forward. By associating a different weight to the accessed data according to temporal locality, the strategy dynamically selects a popular data, calculates a suitable number of copies to meet a reasonable availability requirement and places replicas among data nodes in a balanced way. The motivation of this replication strategy is that a more recent accessed data file will be accessed again in the near future to the current status of data access. Experimental results conclusively demonstrate that the proposed replication strategy can successfully improve cloud data center availability without too many replicas in cloud computing environments.
