Abstract:alpha-pinene and beta-pinene are the most dominating species among natural terpenes. Terpenes are mainly emitted from forest trees, flowers and grass. In the lower troposphere terpenes can react fast with OH radical, ozone, NO3 radical and ground state oxygen atom. These reactions may contribute to the occurring of aerosols, peroxides (hydrogen peroxide and organic peroxide), carbon cycle (mainly CO), acid rain (organic acids, NO3- and SO4(2-), ozone and active radicals such as OH radical. Reactions with ozone occur both in the daytime and in the night. The study in this field in China began in the late 1980. The main work focus on the source emission and the experimental simulation has just started. It is most of our group's work. In this paper preliminary experimental simulation of the gas-phase reactions of alpha-pinene and beta-pinene with ozone were carried out in the quartz chamber. The rate constants of these reactions were measured using long-path Fourier transform infra-red combined with relative rate constant method. And the rate constants for the gas-phase reactions of alpha-pinene, beta-pinene with ozone were determined as 2.83 x 10(17) cm3.molecule-1.s-1 and 1.48 x 10(17) cm3.molecule-1.s-1 at 1.0 x 10(5) Pa and 296 +/- 3 K. The results are quite similar to the data from Atkinson group. No cyclohexane was added to the reaction system during the measurement to restrain the formation of OH radical. The formation of OH radical could not be quantified, so that the effect of subsidiary reactions induced by OH radical has not been calculated. In the later simulation study and model this effect should be considered.

Abstract:Kinetics of the reaction of ozone with propylene under real atmospheric environmental conditions with an ozone concentration of ca 6.6×10−8 has been investigated in a self-made Teflon Chamber. Using Model 49C-O3 Analyzer and GC-FID, reaction rate constants at a temperature range of 282–314 K were determined by an absolute rate technique in terms of measurements of ozone concentrations. Results show that the reaction rate constant is 6.73×10−18 cm3·molecule−1·s−1 for the initial ozone concentration of 6.61×10−8 and the temperature of 282 K. According to the reaction rate constants under different temperatures, the Arrhenius equation of k2=(5.8±1.2)×10−15e(−1907±53)/T is obtained. Compared with the results reported by other researchers, although the rate constants obtained in this study are systematically underestimated and the activation energy of the reaction overestimated, the results are satisfactory. For example, the largest relative error is only 11% and 5% for the rate constant and activation energy, respectively. These demonstrate that the research equipment used in this study is reliable under real atmospheric conditions and can be used to do further studies related to ozone reactions.

Abstract:Rate constants for the reactions of ozone with 1-octen-3-ol, 1-nonen-3-ol and 1-nonen-4-ol have been determined at 298±1K and atmospheric pressure for the first time. The experiments were performed in a 100-L FEP Teflon film bag using absolute rate method; the rate constants were (1.91±0.19)×10-17, (1.89±0.20)×10-17, and (0.83±0.08)×10-17cm3/(molecule·sec) for 1-octen-3-ol, 1-nonen-3-ol, and 1-nonen-4-ol, respectively. The rate constants have been compared with those of unsaturated alcohols structural homologs, and used to estimate the reaction reactivity. The electronegativity of carbon-carbon double bond was calculated by atomic charges analysis. The calculated results show that the electronic effect of the lone pair electrons of hydroxyl oxygen is the main cause of the difference in rate coefficient. According to the obtained rate constants, the atmospheric lifetimes of studied unsaturated alcohols were also estimated, which indicates that the reaction with ozone is an important loss pathway in the atmosphere, especially in polluted areas.

Abstract:Unsaturated alcohols and ketones are a category of oxygenated biogenic volatile organic compounds, which reacted with tropospheric ozone and then made a significant contribution to the formation of secondary organic aerosols (SOA). However, the chemical pathways of their reaction with O-3 are poorly understood. Hence, the reactions of O-3 with three unsaturated alcohols and ketones were conducted in 100 L FEP Teflon smog chamber and the rate constants were obtained by using the absolute rate method. The rate constant of 4-methyl-3-penten2-one, 2-methyl-4-penten-2-ol, 4-penten-2-ol reacting with O-3 at 298 K and 760 Torr was (7.68 +/- 0.80) x 10(-18), (4.27 +/- 0.44) x 10(-18) and (5.40 +/- 0.57) x 10(-18) cm(3)molecule(-1)s(-1), respectively. Combining with theoretical calculation, the factors leading to the different rate constants of a series of similar structure compounds were analyzed, including the steric effect of methyl in specific position and the electron withdrawing effect of hydroxyl group in the gamma position for alcohols and carbonyl group in the beta position for ketones. Moreover, the major products of three unsaturated organics reacted with ozone were detected, and the reaction mechanisms were deduced by further supporting of theoretical calculation. The atmospheric lifetime of the target compounds and the environmental significant were explored.

Abstract:Reaction rate constants and products of 1-octen-3-one, 3-octen-2-one and 4-hexen-3-one with ozone were studied in a 100-L fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP) Teflon film bag using absolute rate method at 298 ± 1 K and atmospheric pressure. The rate constants were (1.09 ± 0.12) × 10-17, (3.48 ± 0.36) × 10-17 and (5.70 ± 0.60) × 10-17 cm3/(molecule⋅sec), respectively. According to the obtained rate constants, the effects of carbonyl were discussed. The carbonyl group in β position has a net withdrawing effect with respect to an olefinic bond, then causing the decline of rate constants. The quantum chemical calculation was used to explain the results of rate constants. The products of ozonolysis were mainly aldehydes, which have significant influence on the formation of SOA, and hence play an important role in the atmosphere. In this work, we detected the main products of reaction and proposed the reaction mechanism by combining the results of quantum chemical calculations. Atmospheric lifetime for three unsaturated ketones reacted with ozone was 36.4, 11.4 and 6.9 hr for 1-octen-3-one, 3-octen-2-one and 4-hexen-3-one, respectively.

Abstract:The gas-phase reaction of ozone with olefins represents an important path for the conversion of unsaturated hydrocarbons in the atmosphere. The current interest is focused on the formation of stabilized Criegee intermediates (sCI) and possible further reactions of sCI. We report results from the ozonolysis of 2,3-dimethyl-2-butene (TME), trans-2-butene and 1-methyl-c-yclohexene (MCH) carried out in an atmospheric pressure flow tube at 293 +/- 0.5 K and RH = 50% using chemical ionization atmospheric pressure interface time-of-flight (CI-APi-TOF) mass spectrometry to detect H2SO4 produced from SO2 oxidation by sCI. The yields of sCI were found to be in good agreement with recently observed data: 0.62 +/- 0.28 (TME), 0.53 +/- 0.24 (trans-2-butene) and 0.16 +/- 0.07 (MCH). The rate coefficients for sCI + SO2 from our experiment, (0.9-7.7) X 10(-13) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1), are within the range of recommendations from indirect determinations as given so far in the literature. Our study helps to assess the importance of sCI in atmospheric chemistry, especially for the oxidation of SO2 to H2SO4.

Abstract:Volatile aromatic compounds (VOCs) are ubiquitous in the environment, they can be emitted from biogenic and anthropogenic sources. They can contribute to the formation of many products leading to the formation of secondary organic aerosols (SOA). The products of the gas phase reaction of 1,2-benzenediol (catechol) with ozone were studied in a simulation chamber at atmospheric pressure and 294 ± 2 K in presence of different levels of relative humidity (0–60%). The gas phase products were monitored continuously by a PTR-ToF-MS for 2 h, whereas filters samples were collected directly from the reaction chamber and analyzed by thermo-desorption gas chromatography; TD-GC-MS. This study shows the different potential chemical pathways that catechol could follow to form a variety of products under dry, low and high humidity conditions. The molecular mass 98 was found to be distinctive and appears in the gas phase when humidity in the reaction chamber is between 20 and 60%. Other new masses (m/z) such as 176, 154, 116, 68, 72, 80, 96, 108, and 124 were also detected under different experimental conditions. Furthermore, the catechol concentration has been monitored continuously by a PTR-ToF-MS from low to high humidity conditions (RH = 7.5−78.8%). The purpose of the latter is to suggest that the formation of catechol-H2O clusters occurs in the gas phase of the reaction chamber causing a decrease in catechol reactivity towards ozone and other gases and subsequently a decrease in the rate constant.

Abstract:In this study, the ozone and OH-radical reactions of myrcene were investigated in an aerosol chamber (at 292–295 K and 50% relative humidity) to examine the gas-phase oxidation products and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation. The ozone reaction studies were performed in the presence and absence of CO, which serves as an OH radical scavenger. In the photooxidation experiments OH radicals were generated by photolysis of methyl nitrite. The ozonolysis of myrcene in the presence of CO resulted in a substantial yield of 4-vinyl-4-pentenal (55.3%), measured as m/z 111 plus m/z 93 using proton transfer reaction-mass spectrometry (PTR-MS) and confirmed unambiguously as C 7 H 10 O by denuder measurements and HPLC/ESI-TOFMS analysis of its 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH) derivative. Additionally, the formation of two different organic dicarbonyls with m/z 113 and a molecular formula of C 6 H 8 O 2 were observed (2.1%). The yields of these dicarbonyls were higher in the ozonolysis experiments without an OH scavenger (5.4%) and even higher (13.8%) in the myrcene OH radical reaction. The formation of hydroxyacetone as a direct product of the myrcene reaction with ozone with a molar yield of 17.6% was also observed. The particle size distribution and volume concentrations were monitored and facilitated the calculation of SOA yields, which ranged from 0 to 0.01 (ozonolysis in the presence of CO) to 0.39 (myrcene OH radical reaction). Terpenylic acid was found in the SOA samples collected from the ozonolysis of myrcene in the absence of an OH scavenger and the OH radical-initiated reaction of myrcene but not in samples collected from the ozonolysis in the presence of CO as an OH radical scavenger, suggesting that terpenylic acid formation involves the reaction of myrcene with an OH radical. A reaction mechanism describing the formation of terpenylic acid is proposed.

Abstract:The O(3)-initiated oxidation of beta-caryophyllene, a sesquiterpene emitted in forested areas, was theoretically characterized for the first time using DFT quantum chemical calculations combined with statistical kinetic RRKM/master equation analysis and variational transition state theory. O(3)-Addition occurs primarily, >95%, on the endocyclic double bond without a barrier, leading to a total rate coefficient of 8.3 x 10(-24) T(3.05) exp(1028 K/T) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1), with a slight negative T-dependence. Thermal and chemically activated unimolecular reactions following this addition, including the so-called ester and hydroperoxide channels, and internal formation of the secondary ozonide, where characterized and quantified; a newly discovered reaction pathway through intersystem crossing from a dioxirane to a triplet bis(oxy) biradical intermediate is incorporated in the mechanism. The first generation product distribution at 298 K is predicted as 74% stabilized Criegee intermediates (CI), 8% OH radicals together with vinoxy-type 2-oxo alkyl radical co-products, 8% acids, 0.3% esters, and 9% CO(2) with two alkyl radical co-products. The thermalized CI can convert to the secondary ozonide in many reaction conditions, in particular the atmosphere; secondary ozonides are thus expected as dominant products of the beta-caryophyllene ozonolysis. These results are consistent with the experimental data presented in the accompanying paper (Part I). The temperature dependence and uncertainties of the product distribution are discussed. The high molecular weight oxygenated products, including beta-caryophyllonic acid and secondary ozonides, are expected to contribute to secondary organic aerosol formation.
Highly Oxidized RO2 Radicals and Consecutive Products from the Ozonolysis of Three Sesquiterpenes

Abstract:The formation of highly oxidized multifunctional organic compounds (HOMs) from the ozonolysis of three sesquiterpenes, alpha-cedrene, beta-caryophyllene, and alpha-humulene, was investigated for the first time. Sesquiterpenes contribute 2.4% to the global carbon emission of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) and can be responsible for up to 70% of the regional BVOC emissions. HOMs were detected with chemical ionization-atmospheric pressure interface-time-of-flight mass spectrometry and nitrate and acetate ionization. Acetate ions were more sensitive toward highly oxidized RO2 radicals containing a single hydroperoxide moiety. Under the chosen reaction conditions, product formation was dominated by highly oxidized RO2 radicals which react with NO, NO2, HO2, and other RO2 radicals under atmospheric conditions. The ozonolysis of sesquiterpenes resulted in molar HOM yields of 0.6% for a-cedrene (acetate), 1.8% for beta-caryophyllene (acetate), and 1.4% for a-humulene (nitrate) afflicted with an uncertainty factor of 2. Molar yields of highly oxidized RO2 radicals were identical with HOM yields measuring the corresponding closed-shell products. HOM formation from ozonolysis of alpha-cedrene was explained by an autoxidation mechanism initiated by ozone attack at the double bond similar to that found in the ozonolysis of cyclohexene and limonene.

Abstract:The photo-oxidation of myrcene, a monoterpene species emitted by plants, was investigated at atmospheric conditions in the outdoor simulation chamber SAPHIR (Simulation of Atmospheric PHotochemistry In a Large Reaction Chamber). The chemical structure of myrcene consists of one moiety that is a conjugated π system (similar to isoprene) and another moiety that is a triple-substituted olefinic unit (similar to 2-methyl-2-butene). Hydrogen shift reactions of organic peroxy radicals (RO2) formed in the reaction of isoprene with atmospheric OH radicals are known to be of importance for the regeneration of OH. Structure–activity relationships (SARs) suggest that similar hydrogen shift reactions like in isoprene may apply to the isoprenyl part of RO2 radicals formed during the OH oxidation of myrcene. In addition, SAR predicts further isomerization reactions that would be competitive with bimolecular RO2 reactions for chemical conditions that are typical for forested environments with low concentrations of nitric oxide. Assuming that OH peroxy radicals can rapidly interconvert by addition and elimination of O2 like in isoprene, bulk isomerization rate constants of 0.21 and 0.097 s−1 (T=298 K) for the three isomers resulting from the 3′-OH and 1-OH addition, respectively, can be derived from SAR. Measurements of radicals and trace gases in the experiments allowed us to calculate radical production and destruction rates, which are expected to be balanced. The largest discrepancies between production and destruction rates were found for RO2. Additional loss of organic peroxy radicals due to isomerization reactions could explain the observed discrepancies. The uncertainty of the total radical (ROx=OH+HO2+RO2) production rates was high due to the uncertainty in the yield of radicals from myrcene ozonolysis. However, results indicate that radical production can only be balanced if the reaction rate constant of the reaction between hydroperoxy (HO2) and RO2 radicals derived from myrcene is lower (0.9 to 1.6×10-11 cm3 s−1) than predicted by SAR. Another explanation of the discrepancies would be that a significant fraction of products (yield: 0.3 to 0.6) from these reactions include OH and HO2 radicals instead of radical-terminating organic peroxides. Experiments also allowed us to determine the yields of organic oxidation products acetone (yield: 0.45±0.08) and formaldehyde (yield: 0.35±0.08). Acetone and formaldehyde are produced from different oxidation pathways, so that yields of these compounds reflect the branching ratios of the initial OH addition to myrcene. Yields determined in the experiments are consistent with branching ratios expected from SAR. The yield of organic nitrate was determined from the gas-phase budget analysis of reactive oxidized nitrogen in the chamber, giving a value of 0.13±0.03. In addition, the reaction rate constant for myrcene + OH was determined from the measured myrcene concentration, yielding a value of (2.3±0.3)×10-10 cm3 s−1.
Gas-Phase Kinetics of a Series of cis-3-Hexenyl Esters with OH Radicals under Simulated Atmospheric Conditions

Abstract:The present relative kinetic study reports on the experimentally determined gas-phase reaction rate coefficients of OH radicals with a series of seven cis-3-hexenyl esters. The experiments were carried out in the environmental simulation chamber made of quartz from the "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" University of Iasi (ESC-Q-UAIC), Romania, at a temperature of (298 ± 2) K and a total air pressure of (1000 ± 10) mbar. In situ long-path Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was used to monitor cis-3-hexenyl formate (Z3HF, (Z)-CH3CH2CH═CH(CH2)2OC(O)H), cis-3-hexenyl acetate (Z3HAc, (Z)-CH3CH2CH═CH(CH2)2OC(O)CH3), cis-3-hexenyl isobutyrate (Z3HiB, (Z)-CH3CH2CH═CH(CH2)2OC(O)CH(CH3)2), cis-3-hexenyl 3-methylbutanoate (Z3H3MeB, (Z)-CH3CH2CH═CH(CH2)2OC(O)CH2CH(CH3)2), cis-3-hexenyl hexanoate (Z3HH, (Z)-CH3CH2CH═CH(CH2)2OC(O)(CH2)4CH3), cis-3-hexenyl cis-3-hexenoate (Z3HZ3H, (Z,Z)-CH3CH2CH═CH(CH2)2OC(O)CH2CH═CHCH2CH3), cis-3-hexenyl benzoate (Z3HBz, (Z)-CH3CH2CH═CH(CH2)2OC(O)C6H5), and the reference compounds. The following reaction rate coefficients (in 10-11 cm3 molecule-1 s-1) were obtained for the OH radical-initiated gas-phase oxidation of cis-3-hexenyl esters: (4.13 ± 0.45) for Z3HF, (4.19 ± 0.38) for Z3HAc, (4.84 ± 0.39) for Z3HiB, (5.39 ± 0.61) for Z3H3MeB, (7.00 ± 0.56) for Z3HH, (10.58 ± 1.40) for Z3HZ3H, and (3.41 ± 0.28) for Z3HBz. The results are discussed in terms of hexenyl ester reactivity and compared with the available literature data and structure-activity relationship (SAR) estimates. The atmospheric implications based on the average lifetimes of the investigated cis-3-hexenyl esters are discussed in the present study. The gas-phase rate coefficients for OH radical reactions are given herein for the first time for cis-3-hexenyl isobutyrate, cis-3-hexenyl 3-methylbutanoate, cis-3-hexenyl hexanoate cis-3-hexenyl cis-3-hexenoate, and cis-3-hexenyl benzoate. The newly determined gas-phase reaction rate coefficients provide new information for existing kinetic databases and contribute to the further development of SAR methodologies useful for predicting the reactivity of oxygenated volatile organic compounds.

Abstract:Rate coefficients for the reactions of difunctional nitrates with atmospherically important OH radicals are not currently available in the literature. This study represents the first determination of rate coefficients for a number of C(3) and C(4) carbonyl nitrates and dinitrates with OH radicals in a 38 l glass reaction chamber at 1000 mbar total pressure of synthetic air by 298±2 K using a relative kinetic technique.
Gas-Phase Ozonolysis of Cycloalkenes: Formation of Highly Oxidized RO2 Radicals and Their Reactions with NO, NO2, SO2, and Other RO2 Radicals

Abstract:The gas-phase reaction of ozone with C5-C8 cycloalkenes has been investigated in a free-jet flow system at atmospheric pressure and a temperature of 297 ± 1 K. Highly oxidized RO2 radicals bearing at least 5 O atoms in the molecule and their subsequent reaction products were detected in most cases by means of nitrate-CI-APi-TOF mass spectrometry. Starting from a Criegee intermediate after splitting-off an OH-radical, the formation of these RO2 radicals can be explained via an autoxidation mechanism, meaning RO2 isomerization (ROO → QOOH) and subsequently O2 addition (QOOH + O2 → R'OO). Time-dependent RO2 radical measurements concerning the ozonolysis of cyclohexene indicate rate coefficients of the intramolecular H-shifts, ROO → QOOH, higher than 1 s(-1). The total molar yield of highly oxidized products (predominantly RO2 radicals) from C5-C8 cycloalkenes in air is 4.8-6.0% affected with a calibration uncertainty by a factor of about two. For the most abundant RO2 radical from cyclohexene ozonolysis, O,O-C6H7(OOH)2O2 ("O,O" stands for two O atoms arising from the ozone attack), the determination of the rate coefficients of the reaction with NO2, NO, and SO2 yielded (1.6 ± 0.5) × 10(-12), (3.4 ± 0.9) × 10(-11), and <10(-14) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1), respectively. The reaction of highly oxidized RO2 radicals with other peroxy radicals (R'O2) leads to detectable accretion products, RO2 + R'O2 → ROOR' + O2, which allows to acquire information on peroxy radicals not directly measurable with the nitrate ionization technique applied here. Additional experiments using acetate as the charger ion confirm conclusively the existence of highly oxidized RO2 radicals and closed-shell products. Other reaction products, detectable with this ionization technique, give a deeper insight in the reaction mechanism of cyclohexene ozonolysis.

Abstract:Absolute rate constants for the reaction of the hydrated electron and hydroxyl radical with ozone in aqueous solution have been determined by using pulse radiolysis techniques. The rate constant, k(e/sub aq//sup -/ + O/sub 3/) = (3.60 +- 0.14) x 10/sup 10/ dm/sup 3/ mol/sup -1/ s/sup -1/, was measured in the pH range 4.1 to 6.05 by following the decay of e/sub aq//sup -/ at 600 nm. The rate constant k(OH. + O/sub 3/) = (3.02 +- 0.25) x 10/sup 9/ dm/sup 3/ mol/sup -1/ s/sup -1/, was obtained by a competition method at pH 6.7 with acetate ions as the OH. radical scavengers. The ozone concentration for both studies varied from 0.05 x 10/sup -3/ to 0.50 x 10/sup -3/ mol dm/sup -3/.

Abstract:T-dependent rate constants for the self-reaction of selected peroxyl radicals in aqueous solution have been determined. For C2H5O2·, HOCH2O2· and C2H4(OH)O2· negative activation energies have been found. The redox potential of CH3O2·, HOCH2O2·, ·O2CH2COOH can be estimated to E0 < 1 V due to reactivity against NO2−. The rate constant for the reaction of the methylperoxyl radical with bisulfite (HSO3−1) at T = 298 K and pH 4 has been determined to k = (5 ± 1)·105 l·mol−1·s−1. This reaction may be an important sink for the methylperoxyl radical in the condensed phase of the atmosphere at daytime. This is demonstrated by including the corresponding reactions into a box model (CAPRAM 2.3.)

Abstract:The kinetics of the reaction of an alkene (E-stilbene) and three polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (perylene, anthracene and fluoranthene), as examples of environmental pollutants, with ozone on the surface of ice grains (also called "artificial snow"), produced by shock-freezing of aqueous solutions, was studied at submonolayer pollutant coverages (c = 1.5 × 10(-8) to 3 × 10(-10) mol kg(-1)) and two different temperatures (258 and 188 K). This work supports and extends our previous discovery of a remarkable increase in the apparent ozonation rates with decreasing temperature. The ozonation kinetic results were evaluated using the Langmuir-Hinshelwood model and, in one case, the Eley-Rideal kinetic model. It is shown that the apparent rate enhancement is related to the specific nature of the ice surface at different temperatures, which influences the availability of contaminants to gaseous ozone, and to inherent reactivities of the contaminants. The maximum pseudofirst-order rate constants and the lifetimes of the studied compounds are provided. At a typical atmospheric ozone concentration in polar areas (50 ppbv), the lifetimes were estimated to be on the order of hours (258 K) or tens of minutes (188 K) for alkenes, and hundreds (258 K) or tens (188 K) of days for PAHs, thus approximately of the same magnitude or longer than those found for the gas-phase reactions. We imply that this rate enhancement at lower temperatures is a general phenomenon, and we provide data to implement heterogeneous reactions in snow in models that predict the extent of chemical reactions occurring in cold environments.

Abstract:To better understand the key kinetic mechanisms controlling heterogeneous oxidation in organic aerosols, submicron particles composed of an alkene and a saturated carboxylic acid are exposed to ozone in a variable-temperature flow tube reactor. Effective uptake coefficients (γ_eff) are obtained from the multiphase reaction kinetics, which are quantified by Vacuum Ultraviolet Photoionization Aerosol Mass Spectrometry. For aerosols composed of only of alkenes, γ_eff doubles (from 6x10-4 to 1.2x10-3) when the temperature is decreased from 293 to 263 K. Alternatively, for an alkene particle doped with a carboxylic acid, an efficient scavenger of stabilized Criegee Intermediates (sCI), γ_eff is observed to be weakly temperature dependent. A kinetic model, benchmarked to literature data, explains these results as arising from the temperature dependent competition between unimolecular pathways of sCI that promote radical chain cycling and those bimolecular pathways that form stable chain termination products (i.e., ɑ-acyloxyalkyl hydroperoxides). The implication of these results for the kinetics of aerosol aging at low temperatures is discussed.
