Abstract:The quest for the origin of matter in the Universe had been the subject of philosophical and theological debates over the history of mankind, but quantitative answers could be found only by the scientific achievements of the last century. A first important step on this way was the development of spectral analysis by Kirchhoff and Bunsen in the middle of the 19$^{\rm th}$ century, which provided first insight in the chemical composition of the sun and the stars. The energy source of the stars and the related processes of nucleosynthesis, however, could be revealed only with the discoveries of nuclear physics. A final breakthrough came eventually with the compilation of elemental and isotopic abundances in the solar system, which are reflecting the various nucleosynthetic processes in detail. This review is focusing on the mass region above iron, where the formation of the elements is dominated by neutron capture, mainly in the slow ($s$) and rapid ($r$) processes. Following a brief historic account and a sketch of the relevant astrophysical models, emphasis is put on the nuclear physics input, where status and perspectives of experimental approaches are presented in some detail, complemented by the indispensable role of theory.

Abstract:Dawning neutron physics was more complex than one might expect. The chance that the neutron comprised a proton and an electron was diffusely taken into account after the discovery of the neutron. Moreover, uncertainties persisted about the composition of beryllium radiation until it was realized that the latter comprised both neutrons and gamma-rays. The interaction of neutrons with matter and nuclei was soon investigated. Both a spatial symmetry, a symmetry of charge, and a symmetry in the nuclear reactions soon emerged. The relation of negative beta-decay to the neutron abundance in nuclei was moreover reviewed. Positive beta-radioactivity induced by alpha-particles was eventually announced, having been foreseen some weeks before. Accelerated deutons and protons shortly afterwards revealed to be efficient in inducing radioactivity. The physics institute in Rome got ready to start research on neutrons, but apparently it only planned to go through alpha-induced radioactivity, at first. If so, it is then plausible that some new results achieved by foreign laboratories eventually bent Fermi to neutrons. Fermi's discovery of neutron-induced radioactivity is reviewed with regard to investigations then current, once more showing simplicity as a distinctive trait of Fermi's way of doing physics.
Neutron star versus neutral star: On the 90th anniversary of Landau's publication in astrophysics

Abstract:In the late age of developing quantum mechanics, Lev Landau made great efforts to understand the nature of matter, even stellar matter, by applying the quantum theory. Ninety years ago, he published his idea of "neutron " star, which burst upon him during his visit over Europe in the previous year. The key point that motivated Landau to write the paper is to make a state with lower energy for "gigantic nucleus ", avoiding extremely high kinematic energy of electron due to the new Fermi-Dirac statistics at that time. Landau had no alternative but to neutralize by "combining a proton and an electron " before the discovery of neutron. However, our understanding of the nature has fundamentally improved today, and another way (strangeonization) could also embody neutralization and thus a low-energy state that Landau had in mind, which could further make unprecedented opportunities in this multi-messenger era of astronomy. Strangeon matter in "old " physics may impact dramatically today's physics, from compact stars initiated by Landau, to cosmic rays and dark matter. In this essay, we are making briefly the origin and development of neutron star concept to reform radically, to remember Landau's substantial contribution to astrophysics and to recall those peculiar memories.

Abstract:Among the known particles, the neutron is special because it provides experimental access to all of the four fundamental forces and a wide range of hypothetical interactions. Despite being unstable, free neutrons live long enough to be used as test particles in interferometric, spectroscopic and scattering experiments probing low-energy scales. Recognized already in the 1970s, fundamental concepts of quantum mechanics can be tested in neutron interferometry using silicon perfect single crystals. Besides enabling tests of uncertainty relations or Bell inequalities, neutrons offer the opportunity to observe the effects of gravity and hypothetical dark forces acting on extended matter wavefunctions. Such tests gained importance in the light of recent discoveries of inconsistencies in the understanding of cosmology and the incompatibility between quantum mechanics and general relativity. Experiments with low-energy neutrons are, thus, indispensable tools for probing fundamental physics and represent a complementary approach to particle colliders. In this Review, we discuss the history and experimental methods used at this low-energy frontier of physics and overview the current bounds and limits on quantum mechanical relations and dark energy interactions. Low-energy neutrons are key for understanding fundamental concepts of quantum mechanics and physics beyond the standard model. This Review addresses topics such as matter-wave interferometry, quantum mechanical relations and hypothetical dark sector models and interactions.

Revisiting atomic collisions physics with highly charged ions, a tribute to Michel Barat

Abstract:Michel Barat passed away in November 2018 at the age of 80 after a rich career in atomic and molecular collisions. He had participated actively in formalizing the electron promotion model, contribuing to low energy reactive collisions at the frontier of chemistry. He investigated electron capture mechanisms by highly charged ions (HCI), switched to collision induced cluster dissociation and finally to UV laser induced fragmentation mechanisms of biological molecules. During this highly active time he created a laboratory, organized ICPEAC and participated actively in the administration of research. This paper covers the 10 years when he mentored my scientific activity in the blossoming field of electron capture by HCI. In spite of an impressive number of open channels, Michel found a way to capture the important parameters and to simplify the description of several electron capture processes; orientation propensity, electron promotion, true double electron capture, transfer ionisation, transfer excitation, formation of Rydberg states, and electron capture by metastable states. Each time Michel established fruitful collaborations with other groups.

Abstract:We examine in detail two alternative descriptions of a system of $\alpha$ particles interacting via local interactions of different character, highlighting the fact that a faithful microscopic description of such systems demands a consistent treatment of both short- and long-range correlations. In preparation, we examine four different versions of modern microscopic many-body theory and conclude by emphasizing that these approaches, although {\it a priori} very different, actually lead to the same equations for their efficient application. The only quantity that depends on the formulation of many-body theory chosen is an {\it irreducible} interaction correction. In the language of Green's functions and Feynman diagrams, it is the set of both particle-particle and particle-hole irreducible diagrams, and in variational Jastrow-Feenberg theory it is determined by {\it multipartite correlations} and {\it elementary diagrams}. We apply these theoretical methods to the calculation of the energetics, structure, thermodynamics, and dynamics of $\alpha$ matter, as well as its condensate fraction. In dimensionless units, $\alpha$ matter appears to be remarkably similar to the much-studied $^4$He quantum fluid, its low-temperature properties now basically solved in the Jastrow-Feenberg framework. Accordingly, one can have confidence in the results of application of the same procedure to $\alpha$ matter. Even so, closer examination reveals significant differences between the physics of the two systems. Within an infinite nuclear medium, alpha matter is subject to a spinoidal instability. Extended mixtures of nucleons and alpha particles are yet to be given rigorous consideration in a corresponding theoretical framework.

Abstract:Elucidating the role of strange baryons (hyperons) in neutron stars requires detailed knowledge of hyperon–nucleon interactions in the light (u,d,s) quark sector. The structure of the hyperons and their excitation spectra also directly impact, and are an input to, models of big-bang nucleosynthesis. The upcoming K-long Facility will provide a much-needed intense and clean neutral strange meson beam, from which hyperons can be produced at rates where hyperon structure, hyperon–nucleon interactions and higher-order interactions can be studied with a new level of accuracy and for hitherto unreachable measurements. The new facility has the potential to address long-standing questions surrounding the strange sector of the strong force and its relevance to the structure of atomic nuclei, neutron stars and the cosmos at large. This article is part of the theme issue ‘The liminal position of Nuclear Physics: from hadrons to neutron stars’.

Abstract:In this review we discuss the current status of research in nuclear physics which is being carried out in different centers in the World. For this purpose we supply a short account of the development in the area which evolved over the last 9 decades, since the discovery of the neutron. The evolution of the physics of the atomic nucleus went through many stages as more data become available. We briefly discuss models introduced to discern the physics behind the experimental discoveries, such as the shell model, the collective model, the statistical model, the interacting boson model, etc., some of these models may be seemingly in conflict with each other, but this was shown to be only apparent. The richness of the ideas and abundance of theoretical models attests to the important fact that the nucleus is a really singular system in the sense that it evolves from two-body bound states such as the deuteron, to few-body bound states, such as $^4$He, $^7$Li, $^9$Be etc. and up the ladder to heavier bound nuclei containing up to more than 200 nucleons. Clearly statistical mechanics does not work for such finite system, neither does other theories applicable to condensed matter systems. The richness of nuclear physics stems from these restrictions. New theories and models are presently being developed. Theories of the structure and reactions of neutron-rich and proton-rich nuclei, called exotic nuclei, halo nuclei, or Borromean nuclei deal with the wealth of experimental data available in the last 35 years. Further, nuclear astrophysics and stellar and Big Bang nucleosynthesis have become a more mature subject. Due to limited space, this review only covers a few selected topics, mainly those with which the authors have worked with.

Resonances and collisional properties of neutron-rich helium isotopes in the adiabatic hyperspherical representation

Abstract:This work treats few-body systems consisting of neutrons interacting with a $^{4}{\mathrm{He}}$ nucleus. The adiabatic hyperspherical representation is utilized to solve the $N$-body Schr$\ddot{\mathrm{o}}$dinger equation for the three- and four-body systems, treating both $^{6}{\mathrm{He}}$ and $^{7}{\mathrm{He}}$ nuclei. A simplified central potential model for the $^{4}{\mathrm{He}}-n$ interaction is used in conjunction with a spin-dependent three-body interaction to reproduce $^{6}{\mathrm{He}}$ bound-state and resonance properties as well as properties for the $^{8}{\mathrm{He}}$ nucleus in its ground-state. With this Hamiltonian, the adiabatic hyperspherical representation is used to compute bound and scattering states for both $^{6}{\mathrm{He}}$ and $^{7}{\mathrm{He}}$ nuclei. For the $^{6}{\mathrm{He}}$ system, the electric quadrupole transition between the $0^{+}$ and $2^{+}$ state is investigated. For the $^{7}{\mathrm{He}}$ system, $^{6}{\mathrm{He}}+n$ elastic scattering is investigated along with the four-body recombination process $^{4}{\mathrm{He}}+n+n+n\rightarrow$$^{6}{\mathrm{He}}+n$ and breakup process $^{6}{\mathrm{He}}+n\rightarrow$$^{4}{\mathrm{He}}+n+n+n$.

The neutron within the deuteron as a surrogate for neutron-induced reactions

Abstract:We propose the use of neutron poisons in reactions induced by radioactive beams as a test of theoretical models aiming to relate neutron capture in nuclei with neutron surrogate reactions such as (d,p) reactions. We exploit the approximations necessary to obtain a direct relation between the two reactions; surrogate vs. neutron capture. We also show how this is intimately related to the momentum distribution of the neutron within the deuteron. The models we use are based on the theory of inclusive breakup reactions commonly employed in the treatment of incomplete fusion and surrogate method. Such theories were developed in the 80's by Ichimura, Autern and Vincent [Phys. Rev. C 32, 431 (1985)], Udagawa and Tamura [Phys. Rev. C 24, 1348 (1981)] and Hussein and McVoy [Nucl. Phys. A 445, 124 (1985)]. We use these theories to derive an expression for the proton yield in the reaction A(d,p)B. The capture reaction $n + A \rightarrow B$ is then extracted using reasonable approximations. By recalling an old method proposed by Serber [Phys. Rev. 80, 1098 (1950); Nature 166, 709 (1950)] we explain how the momentum distribution of neutrons within the deuteron will depend on the short-range dependence of the nucleon-nucleon force. The relevance of our work to nucleosynthesis in the rapid neutron capture process is emphasized.

Abstract:Nucleon transfer reactions have played a fundamental role in understanding the single-particle components, shell structure and collective properties of atomic nuclei. The conventional distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA) envisioned the nucleon transfer reaction as a one-step process, which proceeds directly from the ground state of the target nucleus to a state of the residual nucleus. The coupled channels Born approximation (CCBA) and coupled reaction channels (CRC) theories evolved because a number of nucleon transfer reaction cross sections could not be reconciled within the DWBA. These coupled channels models revealed that, in addition to the "one-step" process of the DWBA, "multi-step" nucleon transfer processes involving accessary pathways can participate in populating the final nuclear state. In the CCBA, the auxiliary pathways involved inelastic excitations of the target and/or residual nucleus, whereas, in the CRC, the pathways included sequential nucleon transfer passing through nuclear states of an intermediate partition. Coherent addition of contributions from one-step and multi-step nucleon transfer processes resulted in dramatic alterations in reaction cross sections, which were experimentally confirmed. The CCBA and CRC linked the structure of the nuclei participating in a reaction to modalities of nucleon transfer arising during the relative motion between the interacting ions. These complementary theories inexorably changed physicists' interpretations of nucleon transfer reactions and, in doing so, heralded in the new field of direct heavy-ion reactions.

Abstract:The concept of extremely dense matter at supra-nuclear density was first speculated by L. Landau in the beginning of 1930s when neutron was just discovered. A historical review on these issues not only explains the interaction between micro and cosmic physics, but also has profound implications for scientific innovation. It is surely meaningful in realistic physics education to look back to this history. (The review was published in Chinese.)
