Abstract:It is highly desired to design and develop highly efficient electrocatalysts for alkaline hydrogen evolution reactions. Herein, we report the development of ultrafine PtCo alloy nanoparticle decorated one-dimensional Co nanowires grown on Ti mesh (PtCo-Co/TiM). Owing to its favorable composition and structure, the PtCo-Co/TiM can deliver an ultrahigh current density of 46.5 mA cm(-2) at an overpotential of 70 mV in 1.0 M KOH, superior to recently reported Pt-based electrocatalysts. This catalyst also provides excellent long-term electrochemical durability with its catalytic activity being maintained for at least 50 h.

Abstract:The synergistic effects derived from optimizing the chemical and structural features of electrocatalysts permit them to attain remarkable activity and stability. Herein, 1D/2D cobalt‐based nanohybrid (CoNH) electrodes are developed; the structural design consists of Co3O4 electrospun nanoribbons (NRs) deposited onto a carbon fiber paper substrate where Co3O4 nanosheets are subsequently grown via an electrodeposition step and UV/ozone treatment. The content of noncovalently functionalized carbon nanotubes within the Co3O4 NRs is first tuned to enhance their charge transfer properties and mechanical stability. The electrocatalytic activity of the electrodes is further improved by a phosphorus modification of the 1D NRs, resulting in the formation of NaCoPO4. The optimized 1D/2D CoNH electrode, i.e., ED‐0.09 wt% fCNTs/P‐CoNHs, displays a similar performance to that of platinum in 0.25 m Na2S/0.35 m Na2SO3 (Tafel slope ≈102 mV dec−1 for the former and ≈96 mV dec−1 for the latter) and outstanding stability for up to 48 h. The versatility and high activity of this electrode is also demonstrated according to tests in a conventional water splitting system (cell voltage 1.55V, to produce 10 mA cm−2) and a solar‐driven electrolyzer (1 m KOH).

Abstract:Hydrogen is considered to be an energy source with a high potential to replace traditional fuels. Herein, NiMoO4-CuO nanorod arrays are constructed on copper foam (CF) substrate. Synergistic effect between NiMoO4 and CuO can improve the electron transfer rate. Meanwhile, the superhydrophilic and superaerophobic structure of NiMoO4-CuO/CF promotes the diffusion of electrolyte and ensures the rapid release of bubbles. Therefore, only an overpotential of 59 mV is required to achieve the current density of 50 mA.cm(-2). At the current density of 50 mA.cm(-2) for 24 h, the catalytic performance of the electrode has no obvious change, demonstrating that NiMoO4-CuO/CF electrocatalyst has outstanding stability, which provides a new pathway to synthesizing highly efficient HER electrocatalysts.
Robust and hydrophilic Mo-NiS@NiTe core-shell heterostructure nanorod arrays for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction in alkaline freshwater and seawater

Abstract:Typically, the direct electrolysis of alkaline seawater for hydrogen production is very attractive, but it poses challenges due to the high energy barrier and slow reaction kinetics of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline environments. The key to promising solutions lies in the design and development of non-precious metal catalysts with abundant reaction sites, robust stability, and resistance to Cl − corrosion. Hence, we demonstrated the fabrication of core–shell heterogeneous nanorods supported on nickel foam (/NF). These hydrophilic self-supporting nanorod arrays, functioning as binder-free HER electrocatalysts, provide numerous reactive sites and facilitate electron/mass transfer. The conductive core of NiTe promotes rapid electron transfer from NF substrate to NiS. The coupling interface with the heteroatom Mo synergistically modulates the electronic structure of the NiS shell, optimizing the adsorption/dissociation of H 2 O and improving the reaction kinetics. As a result, /NF exhibits excellent HER performance and outstanding long-term stability, requiring only 34 and 57 mV of overpotential to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M KOH and alkaline seawater, respectively. Additionally, it exhibits a Faraday efficiency of nearly 100% for hydrogen production and excellent long-cycle stability. Notably, the (−)||RuO 2 (+) couples outperform Pt/C(−)||RuO 2 (+) couples and exhibit excellent stability.

Abstract:Exploration of high-efficiency non-noble-metal-based electrocatalysts towards Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is critical for water electrolysis. In this work, we adopt a facile hydrothermal deposition plus hydrogen reduction strategy to fabricate self-supported core/shell nanowire arrays as a high-performance electrocatalyst for HER. The nanowire arrays are firmly anchored on the nickel foam substrate, forming an integrated electrode with excellent stability. The formation mechanism of the unique core/shell nanowire arrays is also explored. By virtue of the superior intrinsic catalytic activity of CoO shell and excellent electrical conductivity of Co core, the electrode exhibits significantly promoted catalytic activity for HER with an ultra-low overpotential (76 mV at 10 mA cm-2) in alkaline solution, which is superior to almost all the reported CoO-based electrocatalysts. Moreover, the electrode also yields superior long-term durability without any significant performance degradation. DFT calculations further verify the underlying mechanisms. Our proposed optimization strategy sheds light on the development of high activity earth-abundant-metal-based electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) holds great potential for sustainable hydrogen production but developing efficient and cost-effective electrocatalysts remains challenging. Here, we report the synthesis of a hierarchical WC/NiCoW hollow nanotube array electrocatalyst, featuring rapid gas release to minimize bubble aggregation and reaction retardation. Mechanistic insights into the HER kinetics reveal enhanced electron transfer at the WC-NiCoW interface and an accelerated Volmer step. The optimized WC/NCW-600 exhibits superior HER activity and remarkable long-term stability for over 72 h in alternated acidic, neutral, and alkaline electrolytes. This work highlights new insights into the rational structural design of durable electrocatalysts for hydrogen production.

Abstract:High-efficiency electrocatalysts are required for the hydrogen evolution reaction processes used in clean-energy applications. Single-component materials have limited physicochemical properties and do not meet the requirements of high-performance material applications. More complex materials must therefore be developed for these purposes. This study involves growing flower cluster-like NiMoO4 nanorod arrays on reduced graphene oxide-modified nickel foam (NF/rGO) substrates by a simple two-step hydrothermal method, followed by NiMoO4 nanorod modification with Co3S4 nanoparticles, to achieve an efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) strategy for NF/rGO/NiMoO4 @Co3S4 core-shell structure composite catalysts. The proposed vertically aligned NiMoO4 nanorods served as the core framework, providing abundant specific surface area and fast charge transfer channels. The Co3S4 particles grown on the NiMoO4 nanorods provided sufficient electrochemical active sites for full contact with the electrolyte solution. In the 1.0 M KOH solution, the NF/rGO/NiMoO4 @Co3S4 core-shell structure exhibited a low overpotential of 40 mV for HER at a current density of 10 mA cm−2. These properties indicate that the proposed material could be used in HER processes in energy applications.

Abstract:Finding the best candidates with outstanding electrocatalytic capabilities for the hydrogen evolution reaction is essential for realizing large-scale hydrogen production through electrolysis. In this study, we synthesized NiCo2Se4 (NCS) and NiTe2 (NT) nanorod arrays using a hydrothermal method. The confirmation of catalyst formation was achieved through X-ray diffraction analysis, electron microscopy imaging, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Leveraging the plentiful heterointerfaces and synergistic effects arising from the incorporation of bimetallic components, the NCS/NT electrocatalyst demonstrates remarkable efficacy in catalyzing the hydrogen evolution reaction. It achieves a minimal overpotential of 163 mV to attain a current density of 50 mA cm-2, showcasing exceptional catalytic activity. Further exploration has revealed that the engineering of heterogeneous interfaces and the morphology of nanorods not only guarantee the exposure of numerous active sites and expedite electron-mass transfer but also trigger electron modulation. Such modulation serves to fine-tune the adsorptive and adsorptive dynamics of reaction intermediates, culminating in an enhancement of the catalyst's inherent activity. This study illuminates the novel composite electrocatalyst with robust synergy, highlighting the pivotal role of their unique nanostructures in achieving high-efficiency hydrogen production via electrolysis.

Abstract:Mitigation of wind turbine (WT) forward scattering for communication systems requires a comprehensive understanding of the impact of diffraction of radio signals at a WT. 2D Fresnel-Kirchhoff diffraction approach not only is a suitable fast and profound calculation method, but also provides a qualitative insight into the time-variant diffraction loss of the forward scattered signal. A general understanding of the interaction of the diffraction by rotor and tower on an illuminated ground plane is presented which is beyond the investigation of a particular scenario.
A chainmail effect of ultrathin N-doped carbon shell on Ni2P nanorod arrays for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction catalysis

Abstract:Exploring innovation strategies has huge potential to significantly improving both activity and stability of current catalysts. Here, a chainmail design is proposed to enable the electronic interaction of ultrathin nitrogen-doped carbon shell with Ni2P nanorod core arrayed on nickel foam (Ni2/NF) for simultaneously promoting the activity and stability in both alkaline and neutral hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The easy penetration of valence electrons from active Ni2P core to NC shell enables the obvious improvement of HER performance compared to pure Ni2P. In 1 M KOH and 1 M PBS solution, the resultant Ni2/NF requires the ultralow overpotentials of only 93 and 96 mV to drive the current density of 10 mA cm−2 with the Faradaic efficiency of 96% and 94%, respectively. Remarkably, such a chainmail design also reveals an obviously improved stability with almost negligible performance degradation under the current density of 20 mA cm−2 for 30 h. Theoretical calculations confirm that the nitrogen-doped carbon shell improves the durability of transition metal phosphides by increasing the dissolution resistance of Ni atoms. The proposed concept may create a new pathway for synchronizing high activity and robust stability in manipulating heterogeneous catalytic properties.

Abstract:The design of efficient catalysts with abundant active sites is fascinating but still is a great challenge for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, a highly active cobalt-embedded nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube hybrid array on nickel foam (Co-NCNT/NF) was constructed to enhance the HER activity. The 3D hydroxide nanosheets were utilized as a template and reactant to form the ordered ZIF-8 array by a solid–liquid interfacial release of Zn ions and coordination reaction, and the growth of ZIF-67 on the surface of ZIF-8 arrays assures the introduction of cobalt species into the precursor, catalyzing the formation of active cobalt-nitrogen-carbon (Co-N-C) sites. Based on the structure analysis and density functional theory calculations, an optimal configuration of the cobalt (111) face coated by carbon layer with one Co atom coordination to one N and C reveals a multi-site nature of the designed Co-NCNT/NF catalyst, which provided the improved conductivity, 3D hierarchical structure, the uniform distribution, and efficient exposure of active Co–N-C sites. A small overpotential of 157 mV at a current density of − 10 mA cm−2 for HER in 1 M KOH was obtained, proving that the optimized proton adsorption on the multi-sites structure promotes the HER activity of Co-NCNT/NF.

Abstract:It is significant but challenging to develop noble-metal-free electrocatalysts exhibiting high activity and long-term stability toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) to satisfy the ever-increasing demand for clean and renewable energy. Herein, an environment-friendly and low-temperature electroless deposition method is developed for the synthesis of Co–Ni–P hollow nanospheres anchored on reduced graphene oxide nanosheets (Co–Ni–P/RGO). By optimizing the molar ratio of Ni/Co precursor, composition dependent electrocatalytic performances toward HER of nanostructured Co–Ni–P/RGO electrocatalyst are investigated in 1.0 M KOH solution. The results suggest that when the molar ratio of Ni/Co precursor is 3/7, as-prepared ternary Co–Ni–P/RGO electrocatalyst exhibits a remarkably enhanced HER activity in comparison to binary Ni–P/RGO and Co–P/RGO electrocatalysts, delivering a current density of 10 mA cm−2 at the overpotential of only 207 mV. The value of Tafel slope for nanostructured Co–Ni–P/RGO electrocatalyst reveals that HER process undergoes Volmer-Heyrovsky mechanism. Besides, nanostructured Co–Ni–P/RGO electrocatalyst features superior stability under alkaline condition. The results suggest that nanostructured composite of Co–Ni–P hollow nanospheres/RGO is a potential candidate for hydrogen production through water splitting.
Mesoporous Hollow Cu–Ni Alloy Nanocage from Core–Shell Cu@Ni Nanocube for Efficient Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:We have created a facial self-templated method to synthesize three distinct nanostructures, including the unique edge-cut Cu@Ni nanocubes, edge notched Cu@Ni nanocubes, and mesoporous Cu-Ni nanocages by selective wet chemical etching method. Moreover, in the synthesis process, the corners of edge cut Cu@Ni nanocubes and mesoporous Cu-Ni nanocages can be etched to produce the highly catalytically active (111) facets. Impressively, compared to edge-notched Cu@Ni nanocubes and edge-cut Cu@Ni nanocubes, the Cu-Ni nanocages exhibit higher electrocatalytic activity in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) under alkaline conditions. When obtained overpotential is 140 mV, the current density can reach 10 mA cm(-2); meanwhile, the corresponding Tafel slope is 79 mV dec(-1). Moreover, from the calculation results of density functional theory (DFT), it can be found that the reason why the activity of pure Ni is lower than that of Cu-Ni alloy is that the adsorption energy of the intermediate state (adsorbed H*) is too strong. Meanwhile the Gibbs free-energy (vertical bar Delta G(H*)vertical bar) of (111) facets is smaller than that of (100) facets, which brings more active sites or adsorbs more hydrogen.

Abstract:The activity and stability of bimetallic nanocatalysts strongly depend on their structures, compositions, and interfaces. Here, we report the synthesis of mesoporous Pd@Ru core-shell bimetallic nanorods composed of face-centered cubic Pd and hexagonal close-packed Ru. The nanorods have two types of cavities with diameters of 3.0 ± 0.9 and 20.3 ± 8.1 nm. The mutual diffusion process between Ru and Pd is characterized by the high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy mapping, and the synchrotron radiation photoemission spectroscopy measurements. The mesoporous Pd@Ru nanorods exhibit superior catalytic performance and stability for hydrogen evolution reactions (overpotentials of 30 mV at 10 mA·cm-2 in 1.0 M KOH solution and 37 mV at 10 mA·cm-2 in 0.5 M H2SO4 solution).

Abstract:Doping regulation is a common and effective solution to improve the performance of electrocatalysts. Herein, a metalloid Te-doped NiCoP was developed and synthesized in situ on nickel foam (NiCoP-Te/NF) to reduce the overpotential of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The NiCoP-Te/NF electrocatalyst exhibits superior HER performance with a low overpotential of 71 mV at 10 mA cm-2, as well as remarkable durability in alkaline solutions.

Abstract:Interconnected N‐doped carbon nanotubes enclosed with Co nanoparticles have been synthesized by a strategy of urea‐assisted pyrolysis of bimetallic metal–organic framework (MOF) precursor. The modulation of Co/Zn ratio in bimetallic MOF precursors can not only regulate spatial dispersion and local structural disorder of Co cores, but also lead to the alterable proportion of the component nitrogen types in catalysts, which impacts the charge distribution of the carbon sheath and further ameliorates the charge transfer. Moreover, urea, an assisted nitrogen/carbon source, plays an active role in the formation and growth of N‐doped carbon nanotubes. Such Co–N–C system results in more provided active sites (e.g., Co and Co–Nx moieties), noncorrosive metal cores protected by carbon materials as well as short diffusion pathway of ions due to the synergetic effect of core–sheath structure. Benefiting from these controllable strategies, C1Z1 (pyrolysis product of Co0.5Zn0.5‐ZIF and urea precursor) embraces the current density of 10 mA cm−2 at the overpotential of 251 and 279 mV for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acid and alkaline media, respectively, which enables it to be an efficient electrocatalyst for HER under both extreme pH conditions.
