A Clinical Observation on Heat-Sensitive Moxibustion for 30 Cases of Stroke

Abstract:Objective To observe the therapeutic effect of heat-sensitive moxibustion for stroke. Methods Totally 60 cases of stroke were randomized into the heat-sensitive moxibustion group and control group, with 30 in each. Both groups were given the conventional treatment. The heat-sensitive moxibustion group was added with heat-sensitive moxibustion. One treatment course lasted for 5 days and the treatment lasted for four consecutive courses. The scores of Fugl-Meyer assessment (FMA), Barthel index (BI) and stroke-specific quality of life (SS-QOL) were recorded before treatment, 4 weeks after treatment and 6 weeks after discharge. The mortality/disability and recurrence rate at the end of 3 and 6 months in the follow-up were observed. The comprehensive therapeutic effect was evaluated. Results The total effective rate of the heat-sensitive moxibustion group and control group was 93.33% and 83.33% respectively, with a significant difference between groups (P<0.05). There was no significant difference between groups in the scores of FMA, BI and SS-QOL before treatment (P>0.05). The scores of FMA, BI and SS-QOL were significantly increased in both groups after 4-week treatment (P<0.05), with no significant difference between groups (P>0.05). The scores of FMA, BI and SS-QOL were significantly increased in both groups after 6-week treatment (P<0.05). Comparing with after 4-week treatment, the scores of FMA and BI were significantly increased in the heat-sensitive moxibustion group after 6-week treatment (P<0.05). Comparing with after 4-week treatment, the SS-QOL score was significantly increased in the control group after 6-week treatment (P<0.05). Comparing with the control group, the scores of FMA and BI were significantly increased in the heat-sensitive moxibustion group after 6-month treatment (P<0.05). Conclusion The heat-sensitive moxibustion is effective for stroke and can improve the motor function and activity of daily living.
