Abstract:Abstract Carbon materials have emerged as a rapidly advancing category of high-performance materials that have garnered significant attention across various scientific and technological disciplines. Their exceptional biochemical properties render them highly suitable for diverse biomedical applications, including implantation, artificial joints, bioimaging, tissue and bone engineering, and scaffold fabrication. However, a more systematic approach is required to fully exploit the potential of carbon-based materials in the biomedical realm, necessitating extensive and collaborative research to address the existing challenges, which comprehensive long-term stability studies, the surface properties and investigate the toxicity of biomedical materials. This review paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of carbon materials, elucidating their inherent advantages and highlighting their increasingly prominent role in biomedical applications. After a brief introduction of carbonaceous materials, we discuss innovative deposition strategies that can be utilized to artificially replicate desired properties, such as biocompatibility and toxicology, within complex structures. Further, this paper serves as a valuable resource to harness the potential of carbon materials in the realm of biomedical applications. Last, we conclude with a discussion on the significance of continuous exploration in propelling further advancements within this captivating field.

A comprehensive investigation into hybrid composites integrating carbon nanomaterials is conducted, categorizing them as fullerenes, carbon quantum dots, carbon nanotubes, carbon nanofibers, graphene, and diamond-like carbon. The concluding section addresses regulatory considerations and challenges associated with integrating carbon materials into medical devices. Abstract:This review paper reported carbon nanotubes reinforced composites for biomedical applications. Several studies have found enhancement in the mechanical properties of CNTs-based reinforced composites by the addition of CNTs. CNTs reinforced composites have been intensively investigated for many aspects of life, especially being made for biomedical applications. The review introduced fabrication of CNTs reinforced composites (CNTs reinforced metal matrix composites, CNTs reinforced polymer matrix composites, and CNTs reinforced ceramic matrix composites), their mechanical properties, cell experiments in vitro, and biocompatibility tests in vivo.

Abstract:Carbon-based nanomaterials, including carbon nanotubes, graphene, carbon dots, carbon nano onions, and carbon nano horns, exhibit exceptional properties such as high electrical and thermal conductivity, mechanical strength, and biocompatibility. These characteristics make them attractive for various biomedical applications, particularly in bioimaging and biosensing. In bioimaging, carbon-based nanomaterials offer several advantages. Their unique properties enable precise imaging of biological events in cells, tissues, and organs, with minimal interference in living processes. By leveraging these properties, researchers can achieve high-resolution imaging for accurate diagnosis and therapy. Similarly, carbon-based nanomaterials are crucial in biosensing applications. They provide a platform for developing highly sensitive biosensors due to their distinctive electrical properties and surface characteristics. Functionalizing these nanomaterials with specific biomolecules or receptors allows for the detection and extraction of target molecules with exceptional precision and sensitivity, inspired by principles found in living systems. A review article focusing on the applications of carbon-based nanomaterials in bioimaging and biosensing would provide insights into their potential in advancing biotechnology. Abstract:Among a large number of current biomedical applications in the use of medical devices, carbon-based nanomaterials such as graphene (G), graphene oxides (GO), reduced graphene oxide (rGO), and carbon nanotube (CNT) are frontline materials that are suitable for developing medical devices. Carbon Based Nanomaterials (CBNs) are becoming promising materials due to the existence of both inorganic semiconducting properties and organic π-π stacking characteristics. Hence, it could effectively simultaneously interact with biomolecules and response to the light. By taking advantage of such aspects in a single entity, CBNs could be used for developing biomedical applications in the future. The recent studies in developing carbon-based nanomaterials and its applications in targeting drug delivery, cancer therapy, and biosensors. Abstract:Carbon nanomaterials (CNMs) mainly include fullerene, carbon nanotubes, graphene, carbon quantum dots, nanodiamonds, and their derivatives. As a new type of material in the field of nanomaterials, it has outstanding physical and chemical properties, such as minor size effects, substantial specific surface area, extremely high reaction activity, biocompatibility, and chemical stability, which have attracted widespread attention in the medical community in the past decade. However, the single use of carbon nanomaterials has problems such as self-aggregation and poor water solubility. Researchers have recently combined them with bacterial cellulose to form a new intelligent composite material to improve the defects of carbon nanomaterials. This composite material has been widely synthesized and used in targeted drug delivery, biosensors, antibacterial dressings, tissue engineering scaffolds, and other nanomedicine fields. This paper mainly reviews the research progress of carbon nanomaterials based on bacterial cellulose in nanomedicine. In addition, the potential cytotoxicity of these composite materials and their components in vitro and in vivo was discussed, as well as the challenges and gaps that need to be addressed in future clinical applications.

Abstract:Recent advancements in biomedical technologies have led to the exploration of bio-based nanomaterials, which offer exceptional properties such as high surface area, biocompatibility, and environmental friendliness. Additionally, the bio-based nanomaterials are widely available and provide a sustainable architecture for various applications. This review highlights three distinct nanomaterials synthesized from and/or with bio-sources: nanocellulose, silver nanoparticles, and carbon dots/carbon quantum dots, representing natural polymers, metallic nanoparticles, and organic nanoparticles, respectively. This review discusses their synthesis methods and their potential applications in tissue engineering, wound healing, and biosensing. The review also includes an outlook on the utilization and challenges of these nanomaterials in biomedical applications.

Abstract:: The unique mechanical, electrical, thermal, chemical and optical properties of carbon based nanomaterials (CBNs) like: Fullerenes, Graphene, Carbon nanotubes, and their derivatives made them widely used materials for various applications including biomedicine. Few recent applications of the CBNs in biomedicine include: cancer therapy, targeted drug delivery, bio-sensing, cell and tissue imaging and regenerative medicine. However, functionalization renders the toxicity of CBNs and makes them soluble in several solvents including water, which is required for biomedical applications. Hence, this review represents the complete study of development in nanomaterials of carbon for biomedical uses. Especially, CBNs as the vehicles for delivering the drug in carbon nanomaterials is described in particular. The computational modeling approaches of various CBNs are also addressed. Furthermore, prospectus, issues and possible challenges of this rapidly developing field are highlighted.

Abstract:Graphene-based nanocomposites have attracted more and more attention recently in the field of biology and biomedicine. Graphene and its derivatives have been integrated with drugs, nucleic acids, antibodies, and other molecules. And these materials could be use as nanocomposite carriers or scaffold materials taking advantages of their enormous specific surface area, good elasticity and ductility, excellent biocompatibility, and outstanding mechanical strength. In addition, these composites have strong near-infrared absorbance and can act as photothermal agents to kill target cells through physical or chemical mechanisms. Along with significant advances in cell and organ transplantation, many of these materials have been explored in recent years for use in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Tissue engineering includes bone, nerve, heart, and muscle tissue engineering based on two-dimensional and three-dimensional graphene-based matrices or scaffolds possessing certain mechanical strengths and electrical conductivities, and the aim is to produce bioactive tissues to replace or repair natural tissue by promoting osteogenic, neuronal, and myogenic differentiation and myocardial cell growth. In this review, the basic properties of graphene-based complexes are systematically described and the biomedical applications of graphene-based materials in vivo and in vitro are summarized. This review first discusses the safety of graphene-based materials in terms of their biocompatibility and toxicity, and then it discusses these materials' applications in biosensing, photothermal therapy, stem cell culture, and tissue engineering. This review therefore provides a comprehensive understanding of graphene and its derivatives and their present and future applications.

Abstract:The advancement of nanotechnology opens new and fantastic area of biomaterials for biomedical applications. The organic/inorganic hybrid nanocomposites have attracted growing attention of researchers due to their excellent properties. This review highlights and addresses issues related to recent research on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) based hybrid nanocomposites and mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) based hybrid nanocomposites for biomedical applications. In this review, the modification of CNTs and applications of CNT-based hybrid nanocomposites in cancer treatment and regenerative medicine are introduced. Then, the functionalization of MSNs and applications of MSN-based hybrid nanocomposites in drug delivery and bio-imaging are described. Prospects of CNT-based and MSN-based hybrid nanocomposites in biomedical field are also envisioned.

Abstract:Carbon nanomaterials are some of the state-of-the-art materials used in drug-delivery and tissue-engineering research. Compared with traditional materials, carbon nanomaterials have the advantages of large specific surface areas and unique properties and are more suitable for use in drug delivery and tissue engineering after modification. Their characteristics, such as high drug loading and tissue loading, good biocompatibility, good targeting and long duration of action, indicate their great development potential for biomedical applications. In this paper, the synthesis and application of carbon dots (CDs), carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene in drug delivery and tissue engineering are reviewed in detail. In this review, we discuss the current research focus and existing problems of carbon nanomaterials in order to provide a reference for the safe and effective application of carbon nanomaterials in drug delivery and tissue engineering.

Abstract:Biopolymer-based nanocomposites have gained significant attention in biomedicine due to their unique properties and potential applications. These nanocomposites combine biopolymers, natural polymers derived from renewable sources, with nanoparticles or other nanoscale materials to create materials with enhanced properties and functionalities. Biopolymers that are used to make bio-nanocomposites are cellulose, alginate, chitosan, starch, polylactic acid (PLA), polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA), polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), etc. These have different properties, and they can be used in several types of treatments. Scaffolds frequently employ polylactic acid-gelatin, nanocellulose, and chitosan. Studies have shown that some special types of hydrogel films have proven beneficial in anticancer treatment. Synthetic and naturally occurring substances such as PLA, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), guar gum, and chitosan are employed in the drug delivery system. Nanocomposites such as silver nanoparticles with chitosan, sulfated polysaccharides, and thyme-loaded carrot nanocellulose or starch biopolymer nanocomposites have been used to stop bacterial development. This review article provides a comprehensive insight into biopolymer-based nanocomposites and their uses. Also, it has been incorporated into fields such as biosensors, bioimaging, blood clotting, immunomodulation, antibacterial and antiviral drugs, and food packaging. Hence, the primary objective of this review is to provide an overall perspective on biopolymer nanocomposites in nanomedicine.

Abstract:Chitosan (CS) and graphene oxide (GO) nanocomposites have received wide attention in biomedical fields due to the synergistic effect between CS which has excellent biological characteristics and GO which owns great physicochemical, mechanical, and optical properties. Nanocomposites based on CS and GO can be fabricated into a variety of forms, such as nanoparticles, hydrogels, scaffolds, films, and nanofibers. Thanks to the ease of functionalization, the performance of these nanocomposites in different forms can be further improved by introducing other functional polymers, nanoparticles, or growth factors. With this background, the current review summarizes the latest developments of CS-GO nanocomposites in different forms and compositions in biomedical applications including drug and biomacromolecules delivery, wound healing, bone tissue engineering, and biosensors. Future improving directions and challenges for clinical practice are proposed as well.

Abstract:Low drug loading and high initial burst release are common drawbacks for most polymeric nanocarriers in their biomedical applications. This review emphasizes the use of unconventional carbonaceous nanocomposites as functional carriers to improve the drug loading capacity and their capability of protecting drugs from the surrounding environment. The unique properties of typical carbonaceous nanocarriers, including nanotube, graphene/graphite, fullerene, and nanodiamonds/diamond-like carbon, are presented. Advanced methods for the surface functionalization of carbonaceous nanocarriers are described, followed by a summary of the most appealing demonstrations for their efficient drug loading and sustained release in vitro or in vivo. The fundamental drug delivery concepts based on controlling mechanisms, such as targeting and stimulation with pH, chemical interactions, and photothermal induction, are discussed. Additionally, the challenges involved in the full utilization of carbonaceous nanocomposites are described, along with the future perspectives of their use for enhanced drug delivery. Finally, despite its recent emergence as a drug carrier, carbon-based nanocellulose has been viewed as another promising candidate. Its structural geometry and unique application in the biomedical field are particularly discussed. This paper, for the first time, taxonomizes nanocellulose as a carbon-based carrier and compares its drug delivery capacities with other nanocarbons. The outcome of this review is expected to open up new horizons of carbonaceous nanocomposites to inspire broader interests across multiple disciplines.

Abstract:After hydrogen and oxygen, carbon is the third most abundant component present in the cosmos with excellent characteristic features of binding to itself and nearly all elements. Since ancient times, carbon-based materials such as graphite, charcoal, and carbon black have been utilized for writing and drawing materials. As these materials possess excellent chemical, mechanical, electrical, and thermal features, they have been readily engineered into carbon-based nanomaterials (CNMs) such as carbon nanotubes, graphene oxide, graphene quantum dots, nanodiamonds, fullerenes, carbon nano-onions, and so forth. These materials are now widely explored in biomedical applications. Thus, the emergence of CNMs has opened up a gateway for the detection, delivery, and treatment of a multitude of diseases. They are being actively researched for applications within tissue engineering, as vaccine vectors, and for the delivery of therapeutics to the immune system. This review focuses on the recent advances in various types of CNMs, their fabrication techniques, and their application in the delivery of therapeutics both in vitro and in vivo. The review also focuses on the toxicity concern of the CNMs and the possible remedies to tackle the toxicity issues. Concluding remarks emphasize all the CNMs discussed in the review over their possible biomedical applications, while the future perspectives section discusses the approaches to bring CNMs into the mainstream of clinical trials and their therapeutic applications.

Abstract:Nanostructured materials including nanoparticles, nanowires, nanobands and carbon nanotubes (CNT) have been intensively investigated due to their fantastic ‘size effect’ and superior chemical and physical properties and functions. Nanocomposites can be fabricated not only with different nanostructured materials, but also with various biomolecules and conducting polymers to possess unique hybrid properties characteristic of neither the incorporated components nor the host matrices. The nanocomposites may be confined in nanoscale domains in one, two, or three dimensions for the unusual size-dependent behavior. The synergistic effects of the components lead to broad bioapplications of the nanocomposites such as biosensors, drug delivery systems and biofuel cells. A review of studies on nanocomposites from design, fabrication to their biocompatibility and electrochemical bioapplications is presented.

Abstract:Carbon-based 0D materials have shown tremendous potential in the development of biomedical applications of the next generation. The astounding results are primarily motivated by their distinctive nanoarchitecture and unique properties. Integrating these properties of 0D carbon nanomaterials into various polymer systems has orchestrated exceptional potential for their use in the development of sustainable and cutting-edge biomedical applications such as biosensors, bioimaging, biomimetic implants and many more. Specifically, carbon dots (CDs) have gained much attention in the development of biomedical devices due to their optoelectronic properties and scope of band manipulation upon surface revamping. The role of CDs in reinforcing various polymeric systems has been reviewed along with discussing unifying concepts of their mechanistic aspects. Abstract:Nanoscale biomaterials have garnered immense interest in the scientific community in the recent decade. This review specifically focuses on the application of three nanomaterials, i.e., graphene and its derivatives (graphene oxide, reduced graphene oxide), carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and nanocellulose (cellulose nanocrystals or CNCs and cellulose nanofibers or CNFs), in regenerating different types of tissues, including skin, cartilage, nerve, muscle and bone. Their excellent inherent (and tunable) physical, chemical, mechanical, electrical, thermal and optical properties make them suitable for a wide range of biomedical applications, including but not limited to diagnostics, therapeutics, biosensing, bioimaging, drug and gene delivery, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. A state-of-the-art literature review of composite tissue scaffolds fabricated using these nanomaterials is provided, including the unique physicochemical properties and mechanisms that induce cell adhesion, growth, and differentiation into specific tissues. In addition, in vitro and in vivo cytotoxic effects and biodegradation behavior of these nanomaterials are presented. We also discuss challenges and gaps that still exist and need to be addressed in future research before clinical translation of these promising nanomaterials can be realized in a safe, efficacious, and economical manner.
