Abstract:Borrelia burgdorferi , the causative agent of Lyme disease in humans, is a spirochete (spiral-shaped) bacterium transmitted by Ixodes ticks. Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne disease (TBD) in the United States. Increases in disease incidence and geographic range are due to the expansion and maintenance of Ixodes tick populations and a plethora of intermediate mammalian and avian hosts in urban and suburban areas. Recent estimates suggest that almost 476,000 US citizens are diagnosed and treated for Lyme disease each year 1 with most cases occurring in the Northeast, mid-Atlantic and upper Midwest regions of the United States.
