Abstract:Over the past decade or more, and especially since the end of 2007, a great number of rural migrant children in China have been sent back from the cities to their hometowns. Based on in-depth interviews and questionnaire surveys with children and their parents, this paper describes the characteristics of this group, the causes for their return, their situation after returning, as well as their feelings and wishes about returning. We also endeavour to analyse the structural and institutional factors affecting the return of migrant children, proposing that the major forces are cross-regional gaps in economic development, segmentation of the labour market. Some suggestions are put forward for addressing problems of adaptation for return migrant children.
