Abstract:Recent experiment results from the HL-2A tokamak are presented in this paper. Supersonic molecular beam injection (SMBI) with liquid nitrogen temperature propellant is used. Low temperature SMBI can form hydrogen clusters that penetrate into the plasma more deeply and efficiently. Particle diffusion coefficient and convection velocity (D = 0.5-1.5 m(2) s(-1) and V-conv < 40 ms(-1), respectively) are obtained at the plasma periphery using modulated SMBI. Multi-probe measurements reveal the m = 0-1, n = 0 symmetries of directly measured low frequency (7-9 kHz) electric potential and field are simultaneously observed for the first time. Impurity transport is determined with the laser blow-off system and transport code. A disruption predictor has been derived based cm MHD activity observations and statistical analysis. Sawtooth characteristics during ECRH are investigated and coupling between m = I and m/n = 2/1 modes is studied. Detachment features of HL-2A divertor are numerically and experimentally studied using the code SOLPS5.0 and measured data. The long divertor legs and thin divertor throats in HL-2A pose MHD shaping problems resulting in momentum losses even at low densities and strongly enhanced main chamber losses.

Abstract:Significant experimental advances have been made on HL-2A tokamak along with substantial improvement and development of hardware. The three dimensional spectral structures of the low frequency zonal flow, the geodesic acoustic mode (GAM), and quasi-mode-like low frequency fluctuations have been observed simultaneously for the first time. In addition, the spectral structure of the density fluctuation at GAM frequency is also identified. A spontaneous particle transport barrier has been observed in Ohmic discharges without any external momentum input. The barrier is evidenced by particle perturbation study using modulated SMBI and microwave reflectometry. The non-local transport effect with new features induced by SMBI has been investigated. The e-fishbone instability excited by energetic electrons of non-Maxwellian distribution has been investigated via 10-channel CdTe hard x-ray detector. It is found that the e-fishbone is correlated with the existence of energetic electrons of 30-70 keV. The experiment shows that the suppression of m/n = 2/1 tearing modes can be sustained by ECRH with low modulation frequency of about 10 Hz. Continuous confinement improvement is obtained after the mode suppression.

Abstract:The physics experiments on the HL-2A tokamak have been focused on confinement improvement, particle and thermal transport, zonal flow and turbulence, filament characteristics, energetic particle induced modes and plasma fuelling efficiency since 2008. ELMy H-mode discharges are achieved in a lower density regime using a combination of NBI heating with ECRH. The power threshold is found to increase with a decrease in density, almost independent of the launching order of the ECRH and NBI heating power. The pedestal density profiles in the H-mode discharges are measured. The particle outward convection is observed during the pump-out transient phase with ECRH. The negative density perturbation (pump-out) is observed to propagate much faster than the positive one caused by out-gassing. The core electron thermal transport reduction triggered by far off-axis ECRH switch-off is investigated. The coexistence of low frequency zonal flow (LFZF) and geodesic acoustic mode (GAM) is observed. The dependence of the intensities of LFZFs and GAMs on the safety factor and ECRH power is identified. The 3D spatial structures of plasma filaments are measured in the boundary plasma and large-scale structures along a magnetic field line analysed for the first time. The beta-induced Alfvén eigenmodes (BAEs), excited by large magnetic islands (m-BAE) and by energetic electrons (e-BAE), are observed. The results for the study of fuelling efficiency and penetration characteristics of supersonic molecular beam injection (SMBI) are described.

Abstract:The recent experiments of HL-2A tokamak have been focused on studying the physics of turbulence and transport. A spontaneous particle transport barrier has been observed in Ohmic discharges without any external momentum input. The barrier was evidenced by density perturbation study using modulated supersonic molecular beam injection (SMBI) and microwave reflectometry. The new features of the non-local transport effect induced with SMBI have been analyzed. The suppression of m/n = 2/1 tearing modes may be sustained by ECRH modulation at a frequency about 10 Hz. Continuous confinement improvement was observed after the mode suppression.

Abstract:The formation of a transient internal transport barrier (ITB) is observed after the electron-cyclotron-resonance-heating (ECRH) switch-off in the HL-2A plasmas, characterized by transient increase of central electron temperature. The newly developed correlation reflectometer provided direct measurements showing reduction of turbulence in the region of steepened gradients for the period of ITB formation triggered by the ECRH switch-off. Furthermore, the reduction of core turbulence is correlated in time with the appearance of a low-frequency mode with a spectrally broad poloidal structure that peaks near zero frequency in the core region. These structures have low poloidal mode number, high poloidal correlation, and short radial correlation and are strongly coupled with high-frequency ambient turbulence. Observation indicates that these structures play important roles in the reduction of the core turbulence and in improvements of the core transport after the off-axis ECRH is turned off.

Abstract:The recent experiment results during electron cyclotron resonance hearing (ECRH) on HL-2A tokamak are presented in this paper. During ECRH with a series of the supersonic molecular beam injection (SMBI) pulse fueling, the plasma storage energy WE, D p, line averaged density n(e) and "fusion neutron" count increase, leading to the plasma confinement improved. Furthermore, the non-local transport phenomena induced by SMBI have been firstly observed in HL-2A tokamak. The non-local effect induced by SMBI in HL-2A lasts much longer than that induced by pellet injection in other similar size tokamak, both the bolometer radiation and the Ha emission decrease when the non-local effect appears. It indicates that an electron transport barrier has possibly been formed at the position just outside the q = 1 surface during this phase. In addition, the delayed core soft x-ray intensity decrease has been observed after ECRH switch-off, while the edge soft X-ray intensity decreases just after the ECRH switch off. The study shows transport coefficient reduces at all radii just after the off-axis ECRH switch off especially near the heating deposition location, Moreover, various types of sawteeth activities during ECRH experiment are investigated, and the relationship between the sawtooth period and the power deposition location has been studied.

Abstract:Mitigation of Edge localized mode(ELM) has been achieved with different external actuators such as lower hybrid wave (LHW), mixture supersonic molecular beam injection(SMBI), and laser blow-off(LBO) impurity seeding on HL-2A. During these experiments, the pedestal turbulence enhancement is commonly observed, which is found closely related to ELM mitigation. The turbulence enhancement is caused by the externally driven the velocity shear rate without change of the turbulence correlation length, but correlated to its radial wavenumber spectral shift. A common plausible mechanism for the ELM mitigation with different external source input seems to be involved. A modified theoretical model based on the turbulence radial wavenumber spectral shift is used and successfully interprets the experimental observations. The simulation suggests that a critical growth rate of the most unstable mode, also identified by the experimental results, survives in the competition of the velocity shear rate, enhancing the turbulence intensity. An example of the LHW case is used and good agreements have been found between the experimental results and simulation results.

Abstract:Measurements with a three dimensional set of Langmuir probe arrays have unambiguously demonstrated the coexistence of intensive low frequency zonal flows (LFZFs), geodesic acoustic modes (GAMs), low frequency fluctuations (LFFs) and high frequency ambient turbulence (HFAT) in the edge of HL-2A tokamak plasmas, by verifying the temporal and spatial characteristics of the electrostatic fluctuations. The intensity of the LFZFs is observed to increase and decrease with increases of ECRH power (∼ 300-700 kW) and safety factor q (∼ 3.5-6.2), respectively, and the intensity of the GAMs increases with the ECRH power as well as q. The radial wave number-frequency spectra of the LFZF show that the LFZF packets propagate outwards and inwards as equally likely events, while the GAM packets propagate predominantly outwards. The three wave coupling of the zonal flows, including the GAMs, and the LFFs with the HFAT is investigated in detail.

Abstract:Measurements with a toroidally and poloidally displaced three-dimensional set of Langmuir probe arrays have revealed details of turbulence, geodesic acoustic modes (GAMs), zonal flows and their interactions in the edge region of HL-2A tokamak plasmas. The coexistence of intensive low frequency zonal flows (LFZFs) of f < 4 kHz and the GAMs of 7 kHz < fGAM < 20 kHz has been unambiguously demonstrated. The poloidal and toroidal symmetries of the flows, including the GAMs, are verified experimentally. In particular, the coherency of the flows over a large toroidal scale of 2100 mm at a magnetic flux surface is emphasized. The LFZF packets are shown to propagate outward and inward as equally likely events, whereas the predominantly outward propagation of the GAM packets is analyzed. The nonlinear three-wave coupling of the flows with ambient turbulence is shown with a bicoherency analysis and an envelope modulation of the latter by the former. The intensity of the LFZFs is observed to increase and decrease with increases in ECRH power (∼300–700 kW) and safety factor q ∼ (3.5–6.2), respectively, whereas the intensity of the GAMs increases with increases in both ECRH power and q.

Abstract:The inward particle flux associated with the global long-lived mode (LLM) during the L-I-H transition on HL-2A tokamak has been measured. The inward particle flux arises from the phase change between density and radial velocity fluctuations, where density and velocity fluctuations are strongly correlated with magnetic fluctuations of LLM. Moreover, the radial velocity and its gradient rather than poloidal flow shear play an important role in particle transport associated with the large-scale mode. The strong nonlinear coupling between LLM and ambient turbulence has been confirmed, and this may contribute to most of the inward particle flux in the LLM during the I-phase state.

Abstract:Effect of gas puffing from electron-side and ion-side on lower hybrid wave (LHW)-plasma is investigated in experimental advanced superconductive tokamak for the first time. Experimental results with different gas flow rates show that electron density at the grill is higher in the case of gas puffing from electron-side; consequently, a lower reflection coefficient is observed, suggesting better effect of puffing from electron-side on LHW-plasma. The difference in edge density between electron- and ion-side cases suggests that local ionization of puffed gas plays a dominant role in affecting the density at the grill due to different movement direction of ionized electrons and that part of gas has been locally ionized near the gas pipe before diffusing into the grill region. Such difference could be enlarged and important in ITER due to the improvement of plasma parameters and LHW power.

Abstract:Plasma fueling by gas puffing on HL-2A tokamak is studied by using the SOLPS code package. The injected molecular D2 is simulated by the kinetic neutral transport code Eirene and the plasma is modeled by the multi-fluid plasma transport code B2.5. By adjusting the radial transport coefficients D⊥ and χ⊥, the HL-2A experimental upstream plasma is well reproduced, which is taken as the initial state before gas puffing. The plasma and neutral evolution during the gas puffing and its impact on the divertor plasma are studied. It is found that the D2 can only penetrate into a very shallow region, however, the atomic D produced mainly by the dissociation can enhance the neutral D penetration depth, thus fuels the core plasma. Moreover, the impact of the gas puffing rate on the plasma is presented and discussed.

Abstract:A new gas puff imaging (GPI) diagnostic has been developed on the HL-2A tokamak to study two-dimensional plasma edge turbulence in poloidal vs. radial plane. During a discharge, neutral helium or deuterium gas is puffed at the edge of the plasma through a rectangular multi-capillary nozzle to generate a gas cloud on the observing plane. Then a specially designed telescope and a high-speed camera are used to observe and photograph the emission from the neutral gas cloud. The brightness and contrast in the 2-D poloidal vs. radial frames reveal the structures and movements of the turbulence. The diagnostic was put into the first experiment during the latest campaign and successfully captured blob structures of different shapes and sizes in scrape-off layer (SOL).

Abstract:Abstract The evolutions of MHD instability behaviors and enhancement of both electrostatic and electromagnetic turbulence towards the plasma disruption have been clearly observed in the HL-2A plasmas. Two types of plasma disruptive discharges have been investigated for similar equilibrium parameters: one with a distinct stage of a small central temperature collapse ( $$\sim$$ ∼ 5–10%) around 1 millisecond before the thermal quench (TQ), while the other without. For both types, the TQ phase is preceded by a rotating 2/1 tearing mode, and it is the development of the cold bubble from the inner region of the 2/1 island O-point along with its inward convection that causes the massive energy loss. In addition, the micro-scale turbulence, including magnetic fluctuations and density fluctuations, increases before the small collapse, and more significantly towards the TQ. Also, temperature fluctuations measured by electron cyclotron emission imaging enhances dramatically at the reconnection site and expand into the island when approaching the small collapse and TQ, and the expansion is more significant close to the TQ. The observed turbulence enhancement near the X-point cannot be fully interpreted by the linear stability analysis by GENE. Evidences suggest that nonlinear effects, such as the reduction of local $$E_r\times B$$ E r × B shear and turbulence spreading, may play an important role in governing turbulence enhancement and expansion. These results imply that the turbulence and its interaction with the island facilitate the stochasticity of the magnetic flux and formation of the cold bubble, and hence, the plasma disruption.

Abstract:Similar to CD4 puffing, experiments with D 2 puffing demonstrate again that the wave-plasma coupling is improved by the gas injection around the lower hybrid wave (LHW) antenna in HT-7. Langmuir measurements indicate that the gas puffing effectively increases the density and decreases the temperature in SOL. Studies show that the puffed D 2 is ionized by both LHW electric field and plasma temperature. The coupling improvement by the gas pu ffing is ascribed to the increase of central line averaged density and the local increase of density at the grill mouth due to the magnetic connection. Comparison of D2 and CD4 puffing shows that D2 improves coupling better with less effect on core density.

Abstract:A low frequency zonal flow-like (LFZF-like) structure peaking at f~2.0 kHz has been observed in HL-2A ohmically-heated deuterium plasmas by using the combined Langmuir probe array. This time-varying potential structure, which has axisymmetric characteristic (n=0) and a finite radial correlation length (less than 1 cm), is identified to be generated by the three-wave interaction among small-scale turbulence. Results illustrate that the amplitude of LFZF-like structure dramatically increases with the influence of impurity ions, which is mainly due to the increased strength in the nonlinear energy transfer by the turbulence vortex symmetry-breaking process. Consequently, the enhanced LFZF-like structure has the ability to stabilize the local turbulence by the shearing decorrelation mechanism as demonstrated in this experiment. These observed results given here reveal the essential role played by the LFZF-like structure in the reduction of turbulent level, which could advance the understanding of multi-scale physics governing turbulence and the resulting transport in magnetically confined plasmas.

Abstract:Geodesic acoustic mode (GAM) and low-frequency zonal flow (LFZF) are both observed through Langmuir probe arrays during electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) on the HL-2A tokamak edge. The radial distributions of the amplitude and peak frequency of GAM in floating potential fluctuations are investigated through rake probe arrays under different ECRH powers. It is observed that the GAM frequency would decrease and the intensity of carbon line emission would increase as the ECRH power exceeds a certain threshold. The analyses suggest that the impurity ions may play an important role in the GAM frequency at the edge region. It is also found that during the ECRH phase besides the mean flow, both GAM and LFZF are strengthened. The total fluctuation power and the fraction of that power associated with zonal flows both increase with the ECRH power, consistent with a predator-prey model. The auto-and cross-bicoherence analyses show the coupling between GAM and its second harmonic during the ECRH phase. Moreover, the results also suggest that the couplings between GAM and the components with multiple GAM frequency are strengthened. These couplings may be important for GAM saturation during the ECRH phase.

Abstract:To investigate the optimal scenario of impurity seeding to obtain divertor plasma detachment for target protection, experiments with Ar&D2 seeding from two different poloidal locations, the upper outer (UO) divertor target and lower outer (LO) target, were carried out on EAST. Partial energy detachment (the electron temperature near the strike point T e,spt ⩽ 10 eV) were obtained with Ar&D2 mixture puffing from the UO target and, for the first time, from the LO target into H-mode plasmas in the upper single null (USN) configuration. The peak heat flux q t on the UO target was significantly reduced (by ∼80%). The rollover of ion flux density j s did not appear probably due to insufficient momentum loss, which is independent of the puff locations. The poloidal asymmetries of particle and heat fluxes on the targets have also been investigated. The UO-dominant asymmetry of particle flux was reversed, while the UO-dominant asymmetry of heat flux was mitigated but not reversed. The plasma confinement dropped by only 14% and 8.2% in the LO-puff case and UO-puff case, respectively, during detachment. The high level of C may contributed greatly to the higher radiation in the bulk plasma region and the greater decline in W MHD in the LO-puff case.

Abstract:Two different confinement transition discharges, the low-intermediate-high (L-I-H) and the low-intermediate-low (L-I-L) confinement transitions, respectively, have been obtained by lower hybrid current drive with lithium wall conditioning in the EAST superconducting tokamak. The dynamic features of short-scale turbulent fluctuations in the two discharges are investigated by a tangential CO2 laser collective scattering system. It is found that the great changes of broadband fluctuations in amplitude and structure characteristics are closely related to the choice of the final transition to H-mode. These results could shed light on the understanding of the L-H transition mechanism.
