Abstract:The evolution of a pure coherent state into a chaotic state is described very well by a master equation, as is validated via an examination of the coherent state’s evolution during the diffusion process, fully utilizing the technique of integration within an ordered product（IWOP） of operators. The same equation also describes a limitation that maintains the coherence in a weak diffusion process, i.e., when the dissipation is very weak and the initial average photon number is large. This equation is dρ/dt =-κ[a+aρ- a+ρa- aρa++ ρaa+]. The physical difference between this diffusion equation and the better-known amplitude damping master equation is pointed out.

Abstract:For optical Raman coherent effect we introduce the atomic coherent state (or the angular momentum coherent state with various angular momemtum values) in Schwinger bosonic realization, they are the eigenvectors of the Hamiltonian describing the Raman effect. Similar to the fact that the photon coherent state describes laser light, the atomic coherent state is related to Raman process.

Abstract:We demonstrate experimentally an enhancement in Raman scattering in Rb atomic vapor due to the atomic coherence initially prepared by a weak write laser. We find that the enhanced Raman scattering depends on the spatial distribution of the atomic spin coherence and can be explained with a simple picture of three-wave mixing. This effect can in principle be used to have a light conversion efficiency near unity in Raman process. Such an enhanced Raman scattering may have practical applications in quantum information, nonlinear optics, and laser spectroscopy.

Abstract:We study the light evolution through a Raman-active medium, where a pair of fields pump molecules near -resonantly and excite the molecular coherence. A synthetic lattice including multiple frequency sidebands via the coherent Raman process is constructed. By varying the density of molecules in the light propagation direction, the system can present a lattice model undergoing dynamic modulations. Further considering the frequency -dependent couplings between synthetic lattice sites, we explore intriguing phenomena, including spectral Bloch oscillation and super Bloch oscillation with asymmetric patterns, which leads to interesting frequency-conversion phenomena with the Raman sideband generations. Our work could be useful for future experiments in coherent Raman sideband processes towards ultrashort pulse generations and higher-frequency conversion. (c) 2023 Optica Publishing Group

Abstract:The dynamical properties of partially coherent Bose-Einstein condensates in double wells are investigated in three typical regimes. In the extreme Fock regime, the time evolution of the degree of coherence is shown to decay rapidly. In the Rabi regime, a relation between the amplitude of Rabi oscillation and the degree of coherence is obtained, which is expected to determine the degree of coherence by measuring the amplitude of Rabi oscillation. The study on the self-trapping phenomena in the Josephson regime exhibits that both the degree of coherence and the initial relative phase can affect the final particle distribution.

Abstract:We present a scheme to obtain the coherently enhanced Raman scattering in atomic vapor which is induced by a spin wave initially written by a weak write laser. The enhancement of Raman scattering is dependent on the number and the spatial distribution of the flipped atoms generated by the weak write laser. Such an enhanced Raman scattering may have practical applications in quantum information, nonlinear optics and laser spectroscopy because of its simplicity.

After an atom has interacted with a cavity field, initially in a coherent state, it is detected through the Raman coupling. Then the cavity field collapses into a Schrodinger cat state.

Abstract:Based on the polarization interference of Raman- and Rayleigh-enhanced four-wave mixing processes, heterodyne detection of the Raman, Rayleigh and coexisting Raman and Rayleigh femtosecond difference-frequency polarization beats is investigated in the cw and the three Markovian stochastic models, respectively. These two processes exhibit asymmetric and symmetric spectra, respectively, and the thermal effect in them can be suppressed by a field-correlation method. Such studies of coexisting Raman- and Rayleigh-enhanced four-wave mixing processes can have important applications in coherence quantum control, and quantum information processing.
Coherent Control Through Near-Resonant Raman Transitions

Abstract:The phase of an electronic wave function is shown to play an important role in coherent control experiments. By using a pulse shaping system with a femtosecond laser, we explore the phase relationships among resonant and off-resonant Raman transitions in Li-2 by measuring the phases of the resulting wave packets, or quantum beats. Specific pixels in a liquid-crystal spatial light modulator are used to isolate the resonant and off-resonant portions of the Raman transitions in Li-2. The off-resonant Raman transitions have an approximately 90 degrees phase shift with respect to the resonant Raman transition, and there is an approximately 180 degrees phase shift between the blue-detuned and the red-detuned off-resonant Raman transitions. Calculations using second-order time-dependent perturbation theory for the electronic transitions agree with the experimental results for the laser pulse intensities used here. Interferences between the off-resonant Raman transitions as a function of detuning are used to demonstrate coherent control of the Raman quantum wave packet.

Abstract:The possibility to manipulate quantum coherence and interference, apart from its fundamental interest in quantum mechanics, is essential for controlling nonlinear optical processes such as high harmonic generation, multiphoton absorption, and stimulated Raman scattering. We show, analytically and numerically, how a nonlinear optical process via resonance Raman scattering (RRS) can be manipulated in a four-level double-Λ system by using pulsed laser fields. We find that two simultaneously excited RRS paths involved in the system can generate an ultimately destructive interference in the broad-bandwidth-limit regime. This, in turn, reduces the four-level system to an equivalent three-level system in a V configuration capable of naturally vanishing RRS effects. We further show that this counterintuitive phenomenon, i.e., the RRS vanishing, can be prevented by transferring a modulated phase of the laser pulse to the system at resonance frequencies. This work demonstrates a clear signature of both quantum destructive and constructive interference by actively controlling resonant multiphoton processes in multilevel quantum systems, and it therefore has potential applications in nonlinear optics, quantum control, and quantum information science.

Abstract:We propose a scheme for creating atomic coherent superposition states via the technique of stimulated Raman adiabatic passage in a Lambda-type system where the final state has twofold levels. With the application of a control field, it is found that the presence of double dark states leads to two arbitrary coherent superposition states with equal amplitude but inverse relative phases, even though the condition of multiphoton resonance is not met. In particular, two orthogonal maximal coherent superposition states are created when the control field is resonant with the transition of the twofold levels. This scheme can also be extended to manifold Lambda-type systems.

Abstract:A general semi-classical theory for the super-radiance in a Bose-Einstein condensate with two internal states is given. In the case dominated by Rayleigh-forward and Raman-backward processes, a large number of backward recoiling atoms can be generated by one frequency laser. Moreover, this scheme could be used to measure the scattered light spectrum, via the control of the energy difference between two internal states, and to confirm the process of forward and resonant backward recoil.

Abstract:Coherent population transfer and superposition of atomic states via a technique of stimulated Raman adiabatic passage in an excited-doublet four-level atomic system have been analyzed. It is shown that the behavior of adiabatic passage in this system depends crucially on the detunings between the laser frequencies and the corresponding atomic transition frequencies. Particularly, if both the fields are tuned to the center of the two upper levels, the four-level system has two degenerate dark states, although one of them contains the contribution from the excited atomic states. The nonadiabatic coupling of the two degenerate dark states is intrinsic, it originates from the energy difference of the two upper levels. An arbitrary superposition of atomic states can be prepared due to such nonadiabatic coupling effect.

Abstract:Optical vortices carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light have earned much attention due to their potential applications in the classical and quantum physics. Quantum coherence has been proved to be an important tool for controlling the behavior of light fields. Developing the manipulation method of optical vortices is very useful for high-dimensional information processing encoded with OAM. In this paper, we experimentally investigate the transfer of optical vortices between different light modes in a coherently-prepared solid-state medium. Utilizing the technique of fractional stimulated Raman passage (f-STIRAP), the experimental medium is prepared into a coherent superposition of two ground states. By applying a probe vortex beam to scatter the induced atomic coherence, a new signal is generated with the same vorticity as that of the input probe field. Furthermore, the vortex beams are used as the f-STIRAP preparation pulses, and the helical phases of the vortex beams are mapped into the coherent superposition state. Subsequently, the optical vortices of the preparation pulses are transferred to a new light mode by using the probe beam to interact with the coherent medium. The new signal field accumulates the total topological charges of the applied fields in this coherent process. Such an experimental demonstration will enrich the interactions between optical vortices and matter, and can be helpful in further information processing.

Observation of Coherence Between Two Independent Atomic Ensembles by Raman Scattering

Abstract:By using spontaneous Raman processes in the high-gain regime, we create instantaneous coherence between two independent atomic ensembles. The coherence is confirmed by the observation of temporal beating between the two subsequent readout fields converted from the atomic excitations through another enhanced Raman process. The beat frequency is found to be a result of an AC Stark frequency shift effect. We find that, due to the spontaneous nature of the process, the phases of the two ensembles change from one realization to another even though there is good coherence for a single realization.

Abstract:We investigate the effect of the spontaneous decay-induced coherence on the control of coherent population transfer in a closed double Lambda-type four-level system with the energy separation of the excited doublet comparable to their decay rates by using the stimulated Raman adiabatic passage technique. It is shown that when the two pulse laser fields are tuned to the particular frequency where the condition for quantum interference is satisfied, remarkable enhancement or suppression of population transfer can be realized through the spontaneous emission constructive or destructive quantum interference even with a finite pulse area, which is very favorable to coherent population transfer in quantum systems with weak oscillator strengths.

Abstract:Atoms in the coherent superposition state prepared by a pulse pair are used as a novel optical memory material where a single interrogation pulse will produce a new pulse pair preserving the relative amplitudes and phases of the preparing pulse pair. Such a coherent superposition state can also be specially tailored along the propagation path to generate Raman scattering in a relatively short distance with very high efficiency.

Abstract:Research on entangled multipartite systems with controllable wave functions has attracted significant interest in the field of quantum optics. For quantum communications and quantum information processing, linear and nonlinear optical susceptibilities govern high-order correlations and entangled multiple-photon resources. In single- and double-dressing quadphoton correlations, we have observed the evolution of linear and nonlinear optical responses in the group delay and Rabi oscillation regimes. In the group delay regime, when linear susceptibility is evident, the quadphoton coincidence counting rate exhibits a rectangular profile. In the Rabi oscillation regime, the enhanced nonlinear susceptibility induced by strong laser dressing effects control quadphoton wave packets based on damped Rabi oscillation. Additionally, at different delay times, some photons exist in the group delay regimes, while others exist in the Rabi oscillation regimes, suggesting a coexistence mechanism. Additionally, there is a transition regime in which a portion of the photons are in both the group delay and Rabi oscillation regimes. By varying the power of the dressing field and optical depth, we realized the evolution between these two regimes for entangled quadphotons. Additionally, we demonstrate the shortening of coherence times under double-dressing conditions compared to single-dressing conditions. These results can help improving the length of coherence time and information capacity, which have great significance for the future development of long-distance and long coherent time quantum communication and quantum storage.

Abstract:In this paper, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate a novel nondestructive optical detection method by coherently exciting and controlling the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)-assisted six-wave mixing (SWM) process of S state Rydberg atoms in Rb-85 vapour. By analysing the evolution regularity of the resonant SWM signals under various conditions, one can control the signal by altering the atom density and detuning and the strengths of the probe and coupling fields. The characteristics of this SWM process provide a potential application for spectroscopy physics and determining the interactions between optical fields and atoms.
